Stange GPS behavior - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Last weekend I noticed my GPS on the Note 3 9005 had problems getting a GPS fix even after a reboot. I tried the usual stuff like opening it and bend and leaned the springs for better contact. When looking with the apps GPS Test en GPS Status I noticed strange behavior. The fix is not constant but like every second a fraction of the time. I made a GIF of this behavior. The location of the config-file for GPS is The Netherlands and I tried clearing the GPS-cache en recalibrating the sensors. I have it on my current ROM (Phronesis N7 v4.0 with default LSSkernel 3.5 and Music of Life S7Edge v? with DarkLord 2.0-kernel). Tried flashing the latest Asian modem bout nothing seems to change it.
Does anybody know what could be the problem of this behavior?

I have the same problem.Have you found a solution?

Don't blame the device for such issues, especially when the problems occur on a non-stock ROM. Firmware plays a massive part in GPS connectivity, from the amount of power going to the chip to the stability of the drivers and the Google Play Services verson.
Mine, which is on pure stock, finds GPS within 9 seconds since Google fixed the Google Play Services bug. (Which broke the GPS for a few months.) Even on GPS-Only. (High-accuracy is even faster, 5.4s on GPS Status' last count.)

[Q] Is GPS working RELIABLY for anyone?

Hi Everyone,
I've seen three Note 3 on 4.4.2 and they ALL experience GPS resets and different times of the day. Unfortunately I do not have a Note 3 still on 4.3 and courtesy of Samsung I cannot downgrade. A number of users report that the issue was introduced on the N9005 with version 4.4.2.
I'm going to buy another Note 3 and NOT upgrade if this fixes the issue but I'd like to know whether anyone is using their GPS on the N9005 EXTENSIVELY, during the whole day and is not experiencing ANY odd GPS resets, GPS fix lost or other GPS related issues.
I don't want to know about the time it takes to get a fix or the quality of the signal. ALL of the phones I got to look at lost ALL satellites in places where there was NO reason to lose the fix, i.e. out in the open with clear view of the sky and ALL of them did so repeatedly.
If a new phone will fix the issue but I don't want to end up with another dud which I will then have to return. Because the issue is intermittent and somehow related to the time of day AND can only be reproduced outdoors this would be one painful exercise.
So if you do use GPS regularly to navigate etc please let me know how yours works and version of OS you're on.
TIA
I use mine about 6-8 hours a day.
Mainly to keep track of where the train I am on currently is and for navigating streets. And to map out and follow a route when I'm doing an urban or landscape shoot. (Photography).
I've never had issues with my N9005 DBT 4.4.2 NB7, nor on any of the previous versions. It's always accurate and always constant. (Except when I'm in a tunnel or on the tube. But that's physics 101.)
It has never lost all satellites, nor has it ever lost the connection without a perfectly valid reason.
I've done a factory reset and my GPS still takes over 10 minutes to find my location....... If it finds it at all.

I agree with this post, never once had a problem.
I use mine for about 2 hours maximum everyday (so i can avoid traffic) mounted on my motorbike whilst riding to and from work, with a bluetooth headset in my helmet.
I am running a deodexed version of ND3

I use stock unrooted 4.4.2 on N9005 and GPS has been working fine, no issues.

May I ask how u experience the problem maybe I just don't get it. Is the GPS not working at all while maps or any GPS based app is running? Or does the phone tell u that GPS is not working? I'm on 4.4.2 without any issues of GPS

Sure, my GPS is usually fine. Locks quickly and reception is OK. Obviously I lose signal in tunnels and in the CBD sometimes so this is not about that.
I could be in the middle of nowhere with nothing blocking my sight although it's obviously most annoying while driving. I lost the signal when I should not. It usually looks just like the GPS resets or so, without moving much at all the signal will drop from 20 satellites down to four then none within 2 or 3 seconds. Then it slowly comes back, gets a lock and works fine again. The lock could then last for a minute or two and then it just happens again. This seems to mostly happen in the afternoon to early evening.....don ask why :-|
I've tried just about everything. Initially I thought it was a hardware defect but my wife's Note 3 does exactly the same thing......what are the odds of having two Note 3 (bought different places about 2 weeks apart) the exact same problem? I had a quick look at a third one (not one of ours so I didn't get to spend much time with it) but it seemed to do the same thing as well, i.e. lost the signal while standing still with no buildings (and mountains etc) around me.

I don't know about the rom since I didn't try it but in the quote of the link is how he fixed the GPS issue. Seems like it is a software problem. If your phones are rooted try the method described in the quote if not try reset with backup via Google. Good luck.

[Q] GPS Issues after flashing back from Lollipop

Hi there,
I´ve had several roms in the past on my Note 3 (SM-N9005) and eventually went back to the Dutch stock rom (Kitkat), with me not being able to wait for the Dutch release of Lollipop i've flashed it without any troubles but I missed the Blocking mode from Kitkat so I reverted back to Kitkit but now I seem to be unable to get a GPS fix.
I've installed GPS Status app and some other apps that write the GPS config on the rooted Kitkat rom but no luck, i've also switched a few times from Lollipop to Kitkat to see if it would make a difference but it didn't.
Now when I open the GPS Status app or any other app that needs GPS the Icon of Android self stopped blinking and says it has a GPS fix but this is false or with will blink and eventually give me a fix.
Any of you any ideas or is the GPS done for?
Thank you for your help!
I also have the same problem the battery has been great for lollipoo but the gps is not working bumping this topic

I can confirm this issue with GPS. It won't lock GPS at all.
Do you people go out of the house to test gps ? You won't get a lock in your bedroom.
I'm asking, because i know that many don't do so.
Hi there,
Yes I test in the outside, even with a clear sky the GPS won't get a fix.
I am not sure but looks like the bootup of the GPS doesn't seem to work fine. Sometimes like 1 in 50 the GPS will boot up and give me a accurate fix.

[BEER REWARD :)] GPS Not working on my Note 3 (tried EVERYTHING)

Hi all, I tried everything I found on the Internet.
I thought it was a cable problem, a contact problem.
I opened and closed my Note 3 several times with no luck.
This is what happens: my GPS cannot fix any satellite.
I made a video to show what happens.
Note that it was trying to fix since about 30 minutes.

This has been happening to me for over a year and to people since the note 3 came out. FIrst we tried lifting the antennae prongs, then we rebuilt NV GPS through the service menu... Still nothing.
Now I am trying to install custom roms...
I installed Darklord's note 7 custom rom on my note 3 and the gps is working... but it has happened before that it works for a few days or a week and then dies again.

Thx, but it is my wife's phone.
I prefer not having GPS, but using a stable and tested rom.
In caso I decide to mod, I'll consider this ROM.
Thx for the help
I found a thread on Reddit that fixed my GPS once, then a thread here that fixed it better the 2nd time. It has to do with pulling the back off and bending the tabs that connect to the GPS antenna on the rear. These threads tell and show all. Follow these and GPS issues should be resolved.

I am having the same issues on my Samsung Note 3 sm-n9005. Accelerometer, proximity sensor, barometer, light sensor, gyroscope sensor and magnetic sensor. All dead now.
I am on Android 6 MM. Using custom ROM DarkWolf. Before flashing custom ROM (stock 5.0) no issues (only issues I having was always constantly "Searching for GPS..." on each time reboot). I also try reflash the ROM and tried another custom ROM Phronesis ROM, no luck. I haven't try flash CM yet. Some mention because of Android version upgrade like lollipop to marshmallow will cause this issues. Currently I unsure is software or hardware cause it. Also, it might cause by motherboard. I really have no idea.

Try installing Purify custom rom. It solved all my issues at least for the past week. I think the gps is controlled by the kernel not the modem. I'm using purify rom with purify 1.1 kernel. note3 for indoor with apgs. In the beginning, I think it's GPS issue leading me can't play Pokemon. But indoor, we can only have agps, so I try to look at the setting and see if this works for you
1. Use faster GPS to change the NTP server by select continent and region you are in.
2. In faster GPS, go to advance to change setting. Change value of intermediate_post to 0. This one is important and I find it helps to lock my location by agps in a second. otherwise, location is found with 4km error
3. Use GPS status app to reset and download the agps data. This make the error distance even shorter
4. Of course,restart and enjoy
I do this and I can lock my location even indoor with a second. Hope it works for you. I try this out by myself and hope this helps you

gps connect fix

Hi I'm having issues connectin my friend's non rooted stock s5 to GPS..it either takes a long time or I have to restart the phone, any fix for this? Thanks!
Might just be loosened screws in the back panel, like it happened with my old S4.
I simply just tightened up the screws, especially the around the antenna on the top right corner and it fixed straight way.

TopNTP by Zatta is one that fine tunes settings and has a good reputation, but doesn't have the test functions that others like "GPS Test" (by Chartcross) have, so for testing maybe try one of them.

Oh i know this app. I'm using this for my own GPS solution on my note 3. The note 3 GPS doesn't connect to any satellites at all. But this topntp solution is working for it, but the problem with it is that I have to keep installing this GPS solution every time I want to use my GPS..I don't know why it won't just save. Thanks I'll try this for the s5, if u have any advice on my note 3 topntp problem do tell.

GPS cannot fix location but can detect satellites

Hi.
I'm using the Samsung galaxy note 3 with magma nx note 8 rom. My phone cannot lock into a satellite despite detecting it. I tried reset gps, download new a gps state. The phone still can see the 20+ satellites but no fix is there. Tried outside and it is still the same. Any ideas how to fix this?
Ask in your roms thread .
Usual Replies
Wrong GPS.conf settings .
Wrong Modem/ Baseband
Loose cable connection
Hardware
At least one thousand identical questions posed use search .
GPS.conf settings fixed mine a bit a while back, but was still slow to lock on. At the time, my battery life sucked, I thought it was the ROM. Finally caved and bought a new battery as the other one was original, and not only did the ROM last for over a day of battery life, my GPS locking is almost instant now. FWIW
