Anybody having/had this weird display issue? - Moto Z Force Questions & Answers

Hey all,
Yesterday morning woke up to my MZF's screen being all weird. Anything dark looks fine, but the white levels are very subdued and even seem to have a slight reddish tinge. And there's also these two black dots that wont go anywhere. Seem larger than just a dead pixel. This has been going on for a full day now; every once in a while it seems that the colors go back to normal, but the problems seems to always return.
Photos below show my MZF (right) next to my buddy's MZF (left). Both displays are at full brightness. Didn't purchase protection through Best Buy or Verizon, so I'm likely gonna have to deal with Motorola Customer Service. Yay.
Any one else seen this? Any ideas?

Do a factory reset and see if it calibrates itself

Yeah, I did that right after posting. No luck. Thanks tho.

Try the hardware tests from device help?

Tried those too, no luck. Have a new MZF on its way from Motorola, warranty is covering it.

I JUST sent my Moto Z Force in for nearly this same issue. I was cleaning the screen off and I had a black dot pop up and after about 3 hours of it showing up I had a bright yellow line running from the dot to the top of the screen. Warranty is covering mine as well.

I had the same problem with the color/contrast on my Moto Z Force, but without any black dots. Mine had the same blue tint/haze to the display. I did a factory reset with no luck. I am getting a warranty replacement today, but this morning the problem disappeared (6 days after the problem started). I think I'm still going to take the replacement.

I have a little different issue. Screen has 4 rows of multi colored small lines. Unreadable, yet the touch and buttons are still functioning, any ideas?

pixel dead, the solution is to change the screen.

Week old nexus one, already dead pixels.

Well I received my nexus one about a week ago and I absolutely love everything about it...
Unfortunately I've just noticed two dead pixels on the screen. One top left and the other bottom right. Both about an inch in from the screens edge.
I've seen a lot of posts of people complaining about clicking edges and dust under their screens but I'm pretty sure this is not dust. The specks look identical to each other and are tiny in size. They are mainly visible on light/white backgrounds.
Unfortunately I live far away from any of the Google supported countries so doing any kind of exchange is going to be really difficult :-(
Anyone seen similar issues? Any suggestions?
There's a coupla apps on the market to check for dead pixels.
All they do is flash up white, black, red, green, blue so you can see what pixel is stuck. It might be worth trying one of those just to make sure they are actually dead pixels.
If they were working before, they might just be stuck pixels, and alot of toggling between colours may unstick them.

But if it was a stuck pixel then you would see it lighting up on dark backgrounds but these are only noticeable on white or bright backgrounds.
BTW I have already tried the market apparently and no joy.
Has no one else been noticing these?
I had one stuck pixel that appeared a couple days after i got my phone
but i fixed it and it came back like 5 times.
But knock on wood its been 4 weeks and it hasn't come back.
Mine was weird it would only show on the lock screen and it was very random but once i swiped to unlocked it went away so it wasn't that bad.
If i were you I would return it especially were its two pixels and software isnt fixing it.

OLED have very deep blacks so its hard to tell if its stuck on black or if it is dead
...anyhow if you cant fix it you should return it.
Man returning it is a such a mission as it was bought in Singapore and I'm not even there any more...
I suppose I could find a way to send it back there and then from there back to the US.... heh. The problem is that I only received the handset about a week ago so if these kinds of problems have been reported since the launch whaat says the replacement wont have the exact same issue? Which would then be a massive waste of time and money ;(
Thats the problem i even set up an RMA to return mine but had a gut feeling i would regret it. So i canceled my RMA and prayed the pixel would eventually not stick anymore.
I didn't want to take a chance of getting a referb phone with other issues.
I feel your pain EVERY device that I get now days that has a LCD screen ALWAYS has at least one dead pixel. But to my surprise my Nexus One is 100% fine .

Problem with my SuperAmoled Plus Screen!

When i received the phone today (around 3pm uk time) after an hour playing around with it i noticed 3 dark thick lines on the bottom half of the screen (on a gray background) i thought nothing of it at first and continued to use the phone.
Only just now i thought there must be a problem so i displayed a full white image and you could really notice those 3 thick dark lines. I then changed the screen brightness to max, min then back to auto and it was gone... BUT! when the screen dims a bit just before turning off i can see those 3 thick lines again just for those few seconds before the screen turns off.. it doesnt really effect me but it annoys me that they are there.. plus there might be problems with it in the future. I'm gonna go to my local Carphone Warehouse tomorrow and see if they can replace it.
I just want to know if any one else has had this screen problem.
Thanks.
Do the lines correspond to anything that is on the screen often like the keyboard or some sort of widget you have on your home screen?
These SAMOLED screens suffer from image retention and possibly burn-in. I've noticed it on my original galaxy as well as the Nexus S. As long as the lines go away after a few seconds it should be nothing to worry about. If you notice them there always then that could be a problem... usually the easiest way to see them is on a flat gray background.

oh boy, its too soon to be having any burn in. might be another issue.
my nexus one has burn in of the status bar at the top. and i can see a burn in of my entire keyboard on a white image. after more than a year of using the phone, oh well. but the status bar burn in was there within the first month.

the lines are:
1: just above where the 4 icons are at the bottom of the screen
2: where the page numbers are (dots)
3: just below the other 4 icons (widgets)
Thing is that these lines are solid and have no breaks in them.. so i dont think its the 3 points i gave above this.
I know it's too early for burn-in but some screens (might I say... all?) come from the factory with some sort of flaw. None of them are perfect and most have flaws so imperceptible that most people wouldn't notice. Every nexus S and Galaxy I've seen had some sort of area or line or multiple lines on the screen which were a bit different color, not as bright, or something along those lines. Some are worse than others, and I noticed the flaws right after taking it out of the box brand new. (I've been through about 6 Nexus S's between me and a few friends).
It's not really the same as a traditional LCD/LED screen since there's not a big backlight. Each pixel is individually lit and some may have specifications that are just on the edge of within manufacturer limits. There's almost 400,000 pixels on the screen... the chances of all of them being created identically is slim to none.
If it bothers you I say just take it back and get an exchange, showing them the problem area on the screen. Just hope your new one will be "less flawed" =)

Yeah, The last phone i had, had problems with the camera.. i went through about 5 of them and i ended up with one that was the same as the first one i had.
Can you guys have a look at yours?
Just open up a pure white image and check.. if there are no lines wait till it dims the screen and check again... thanks.

well i dont have a good quality camera. You might of seen it before i changed the brightness settings but now that i have its kind of faint and you can only see it when the screen dims..
Gonna go to carphone warehouse now be back later
well before i went i called up all the carphone warehouses near me and none of them have stock.
I was told i only have two options:
1: go to a carphone warehouse and exchange.
2: go to a carphone warehouse and get a refund then order it online again.
So i should get a new one by tomorrow.. or atlest on friday.
no poroblems like that with mine. Screen is freaking perfect. On a side note i liked doing this test because I love staring at the screen.
Drooooool
well.. i went to a carphone warehouse.. and they had two instock. I exchanged it.. screen is fine but.. now after i got home i can see a mark/ dig inbetween the screen and the bezel (where the gap is)
again it doesnt really effect me but god.. now that i know its there.. i notice it so much that.. i might exchange it again Y_Y
This happens to me every single time i buy a new phone >.<... trust my luck!

well well well.
Went to lakeside since the one near me closed at 7pm.
Changed the phone again and this one had the lines on the screen and a dig in the silver bezel. She gave me another phone and the screen was perfect and there are no digs on the silver bezel...
In 2 days iv had my hands on 4 different S2's lol..
Last phone i had i also had 4 of them cause of XXX problems.. thought i was gonna beat it today and have 5 XD
Geebuz wept! I'm getting mine in from the UK tomorrow. I hope for hell sake it doesn't have imperfections. The ship back to the UK would be a disaster and if that one has a dig in the bezel upon return I'd blow a valve!
FINGERS CROSSED MINE IS PERFECT
as far as i know. this is the grid pattern on the super amoled screens. however. because of the poor QA/QC of the screens, some of those grid patterns are more visible than other area of the screen.
the whole super amoled is about lines on a grid pattern. if you notice more deeply, you will see that you also have those " lines " some where else on the screen yet they are not visible as the one you noticed.
i had to go through 4 galaxy S1 to get a good one where the pattern isnt "visible " through the whole screen.
its a defective unit. mainly poor Qa/QC. if you can live with it, it wont do you any harms. or get bigger. if you cant, then change it.
or and make sure you dont have a dud phone with piss poor yellow white on high brightness or pink gray on low brightness. because thats also a defect in super amoled screens.

Dead pixel?

I just got my warranty replacement yesterday. Noticed last night in a dark room that there is a small stuck blue pixel in the virtual soft button area, really an eye-sore. My first device had a hole in the backlight that looks like a big spec of dirt, so not as bad as that, but still irritating. I always seem to have the worst luck with ordering electronics (went through 5 sensations going around the warranty system )
Does anybody know of a way that it might be possible to fix this pixel? It's only visible when there is any blue or white on the screen above it. So if I download that pixel fix app and set the background color to blue, that stuck pixel screams, but if I set it to black or gray, it's not visible at all. It's only on if something above it is on. Almost like it's a short in the signal or something. Anybody know of a way to fix it? I've tried the pixel-fix it apps to no avail, albeit I haven't tried for more than 5 minutes.

Pixel fixer apps don't really work, some may report success only because it is an intermittent pixel fault that will just come back or would have fixed itself anyway. If it was as easy as flicking through a serious of colours the manufacturers of LCD panels would do this already as it costs them loads of money in throwing away panels with faulty pixels.
Some pixels will fix with gentle pressure, but often will just come back.
I'm sorry to say the only option is an exchange.

Phil
I'm getting a red pixel that shows up randomly. Either by the notification bar or navigation bar. It goes away if I touch the screen. Is this something that could get worse?

You have a faulty pixel that corrects itself sometimes when given a little bit of flexing as would happen when you touch the screen. It is unlikely to spread to other pixels, but one day the pixel may become stuck red permanently or may just fix itself for good.
It isn't uncommon to have pixels like that, although with improvements in manufacturing it's getting rarer. If you think it will annoy you, you have little option but get it exchanged.

Phil

Didn't realise you were a mod
Its a strangely behaving pixel too. It only shows if there are a lot of blue sub pixels activated on the screen. Example, if the entire screen is blue, the stuck pixel will scream, but if its red, green, or black on then rest of the screen (dark video or picture or something) the pixel is black. Unlike any stuck pixel I've had before. Only stuck blue if the rest of the screen has blue... And if the pixel is supposed to be showing black. If it's showing white or gray, it'll function properly, but if it's supposed to be black, it'll be blue.

Screen develops vertical lines with white gradient

Very interesting. Out of the blue, when I turned my phone on this afternoon I started seeing top to bottom vertical banding. I've noticed that it changes depending on what colors are on the screen, especially in the top/status bar. They are mostly white/gray, but there is a little blue and red.
The phone is only 8 days old, so I'm planning on bringing it back to Sprint on Monday morning. I'm quite sure it's a hardware issue, but I haven't seen anyone else posting about it with this device. I only wanted to see if anyone else had this experience so that I could decide whether it was a design defect that would cause me to reconsider my choice of this phone.
Peace.
have you drop the phone? coz mine develop a horizontal one on the top display .. drop from about 1 feet from the ground
fortunately for me, after i reboot it, the issue gone for good

No drops. Phone was in an OtterBox Defender.
Didn't go away after multiple reboots.
Brought it in to a Sprint store and they ordered me a replacement.
Glad I hadn't rooted it yet.
i notice these lines to, its more of a grid that i see, vertical and horizontal lines, i believe its supposed to make the phone more responsive to the touch of our fingers, making it react faster than other android phones...just an assumption

I had this happen after I had my screen replaced (cracked screen). Local repair guy replaced the screen, seemed to be working fine. I took it home and got these same vertical white streaks. Took it back to him, he found some kind of lose connector or board somewhere below the screen and had to apply some adhesive. I'm picking it up today to see if the issue is truly fixed.
Mine showed after i took the phone to capture images under direct sunlight

I have this exact issue, only difference is that the screen sometimes goes black. I noticed that when it does of I press the lower part of the screen it will display the white grid briefly then go black again. I have tried holding down the circuitry near the connector at the lower part of the screen down but to no avail. Please help.
I think I've experienced the same with my phone after a DIY display replacement. I put some electrical tape between the display connectors and the radio cable. Make sure that the tape is holding all the display connectors in place.

White vertical line on screen Moto X style

Hello,
I have a Moto X Style.
Just a few hours ago started seeing a white very thin vertical line in the middle of the screen that goes from top to the bottom.
Didn't do anything special with the phone, scrolling facebook... just turned off the screen, and then turned it on and voila... it's there
The line is most noticeable in bright blue screen. Tried to take a picture of it, but doesn't have good camera so it isn't noticeable in pictures. Also it doesn't shows on screenshots and it appears even in recovery so it's definitely hardware...
The phone is only 3 months old... But I have unlocked the bootloader and rooted so I think the warranty is void...
Does anyone have/had some expirience with this and can help me?
Or the only way is to pay for a repair?
Thanks in advance...

If no physical damage moto will repair unlocked phones that have hardware failure. Best to get a ticket started and get some help over in their forums. Advanced swap is best even if it costs a couple bucks.

Anyway, yesterday happened another strange thing. I was taking pictures with the camera, then noticed that all the screen covered with white horizontal lines half transparent as if it is some sort of interference.. Restarted the phone and the lines disappeared, but also the vertical line got much thinner. You need to search for it really hard to find it. So maybe it was stuck pixels or something? I don't know
So it leads me to confusion. Either i leave it as it is as the problem is barely there, but then I'm afraid it will come back later, or i talk to Motorola, but then how am i gonna prove them if they won't find the line?
Thanks

I would discuss it with them regardless. If you still see the problem then they should be able to as well. Be persistent and very detailed about the problem. If you can get photos magnified showing the issue more clearly, even better as it clarifies the exact problem.

OP already stated it doesn't come up in screenshots. It's clearly a hardware issue...
I have this issue I believe. Except that it's when I dim the screen the previous images on the screen will not refresh.
See video I shot of it, at 1min 30sec I can start to see the ghosting. The white lines come and go too, usually when the screen is off and I wave at it to get the circles to appear so I can pause/play music. The more black on a screen the more likely it is to get lines down it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DGNIANLzKA
Any luck in fixing this? My phone has the same issue and I keep reading things that say its a driver problem. Really seems to be hardware to me though, given that the same issue shows up in recovery mode...
Hi, same issue here. Had it for ages now, tried to return mine but Moto refused repair as my bootloader is unlocked. Have this issue in each and every ROM I try, stock or custom. Definitely seems like hardware.
If I keep the screen brightness up above 50% it's fine but anything below about 50% and it's unusable.
