1080p lag - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Currently using THOR 1.5 rom with the patch fix and didn't click HD Lag Fix, but there's no 1080p 60fps playback available. Last time i tried the ROM, I did click on it but 1080p60fps still didn't work. I'm having difficulty understanding whether or not ROMs actually support 1080p60fps playback, or if i should just flash stock lolipop rom+a good kernel. On a side note, if anyone has done that which kernel did you like most? Any help relating to anything i've said here would be EXTREMELY helpful. Thanks!

I kinda doubt 1080 with 60fps works on this hardware. Others have asked about this too, but I've never seem a definite answer.
But I'm pretty sure 720 at 60fps should definitely work.

That's super odd, the offical 5.11 update gives flawless 1080px60fps

I'm a CM/AOSP person myself, so I don't really know.
And I don't really care if it's 60 fps or 30 fps when I watch videos.
Is Thor ROM up to date with the official releases?

Yeah i'm entirely up to date. You've helped me before, and thank you very much for that, so i'm interested in what ROMs you use. What kind of battery life do you get with it and what battery does your S4 have? Sorry to get off topic, want some info from someone more experienced with this kinda stuff.

My S4 is on complete original state (except for the software), so that means it has the original battery. The battery is 2 years old so I'm pretty sure it has lost some of the storage capacity.
Anyway, I usually don't let the battery go below 50% (heard it's bad for it). The SOT from 100 to 50 is usually around 2 hours. Do note that I'm referring here to constant use, not accumulated use.
When I download stuff my SOT is 1 hour, from 100 to 50.
So if we extrapolate the numbers we would get 4 hours for 100 to 0, which is pretty average for the S4.
I've been a long time user of JDCTeam ROMs. But currently I'm looking to see what Slim6 offers.
I don't have any kind of battery tweaks applied.

[8-14]Incomplete Comparasion: Huawei B162, MIUI 1.8.12, Oxygen 110805

-----------8-14-----------
1.Upgrade MIUI to 1.8.12 (130811). No FC anymore! And the internal 2GB mass storage is accessible! This version is great! Unless DO NOT USE BUILD-IN BACKUP, or all your sd-card apps will be unaccessible! (stockwell is working on this)
2.Since I'm kinda like MIUI, and this job is really time consuming, I decided that I'll only update MIUI in the future.
3.Include all the historical data of MIUI in this release, so that you can see MIUI is really improving!
-----------8-7------------
1.Upgrade MIUI to 1.8.5 (070811). Sometimes I found FC quit frequently. Still testing...
2.Upgrade Oxygen to 110805. System benchmark improved!
3.Battery not tested due to time shortage. And I still don't know how to test hardware video acceleration. May anyone help?
-----------8-2------------
1.Upgrade MIUI to 1.7.29 (010811). This ROM fixed the FC problem due to wrong build.prop. The performance looks same.
2.Change the test method of battery. I turn on the phone, turn of WIFI/BT/GPS/APN, and wait for 8 hours (during the night). In the next morning, I record the battery level left. I haven't test HW stock ROM yet. So far, MIUI is better!
-----------7-31-----------
Upgrade MIUI to 1.7.29 (310711). This ROM is GREAT! It not only fixed the bugs (video recording, audio recording, etc), but also improved the performance dramatically! The benchmark of MIUI now is even higher than Oxygen! I think that's due to the latest Android 2.3.5.
But the only problem for MIUI now, is that there are toooooo many FC!
-----------7-30-----------
1.Update battery power consumption, according to Katu2006's opinion and test result. Thanks mate!
2.Upgrade Oxygen to version 110730. It fixed the 720p video recording, and the benchmark seems even better!

Hi guys!
I just transferred to HW U8800 from SE X1 (WM). Since I've made an X1-ROM benchmark and it was pretty useful for some friends there, I think probably I can do the same thing here as well. So, that's why I make my first post of this.
I'd like to thank the cooks that contributed so much for our U8800. Without your guys, my U8800 is just an ordinary phone.
I'm just using my U8800 for 2 weeks, and still learning Android system. So, if you have any suggestions, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Finally, I'm not a cook or expert on this. Definitely I might make some mistakes, and that means NO offense to any cooks or personnals. I just want to contribute some efforts to someone might in need. I also want to use this for the decision of my U8800 ROM.
Cheers!

That's cool to keep a sheet with current roms performance level and stage of usability.
I would want you to continue working on updating as it's hard for some to keep track which rom is up to date and which rom is fastest

You are right. Battery life (or power consumption) is very important. But I have to find a proper way to do the test! You know, just let the phone wait for a whole day and night is not a effective way (and I myself have to use the phone!). Is there any suggestions?
something like normal use, if you have another phone to use, you can think about a test like 30 sms to your self or another number, 3 or 4 benchs let the music player work during 2 hours and one or 2 youtube movies and the rest left it alone to see how is his behavious on idle
I've been playing gameloft's Dungeon Hunter for a few days now and noticed that it practically sucks the juice out of the phone. So maybe use that game, or one similar? You could monitor battery consumption AND performance. And, it's also entertaining!

Aaaaaaaaand...
And you could run the game while keeping wifi and bluetooth on with max brightness ^^
Ok, I've been testing ALL versions of Roms available at this point and I can tell you that playing a game is not a relevant test, as everybody is interested in power draining during normal daily usage, with Wifi and BT all all the time, 1-2 calls/day, 2 email accounts with push and some browsing (weather/news etc).
What you should do is install each Rom and use it with all options mentioned always on and measure the time it takes to fully discharge.
I've done multiple tests, on B160/B137/Miui/Oxygen etc With all options mentioned above, I NEVER got more than 24h with stock Roms, to be frankly honest, NO FROYO based rom stock/custom has ever gone over the 24h mark for me.
Both Miui and Oxygen have absolutely amazing power drain, over night I lost like 7% of the battery and with everything mention always on, I get at least 40h.
You should correct the statement with the power drain, as Miui and Oxygen have MUCH better power drain if not twice as better compared to stock Roms.
Another thing you got wrong is the hardware acceleration, which is available in Oxygen.
At this point in time, there is nothing better than Oxygen and thank God that is available, cause the Froyo Roms are terrible, especially in terms of power consumption.
I think you are not able to refresh it that fast, because Oxygen is updating every day recently

It's good to know that someone is also testing the ROMs, and can share some of the experiences. I think the hardest thing for me is the battery test. I've revised the result, according to your opinion.
And about hardware video acceleration, when I use Mobo player, it seems always very laggy, no matter which ROM I use. So, how to prove that the hardware acceleration is on?

It's hard to tell when GPU is used and when it's not, but in my view, actionscripts (which are used when GPU is not required/unavailable) are sometimes as fast as GPU in rendering simple things.
I may be wrong here, but this is just my understanding...
The best way to tell if GPU is active is by measuring the frames/sec...on action scripts you usually get lower FPS...That's why in testing Quadrant, you get much more points in 3D rendering tests, when having hardware acceleration active.
If you search on the market for "OpenGL Test" or "OpenGL Frame Rate Test", these should test the GPU specifically.
There is an example here:

Nope. I just used the default CPU setting. So, this might be a reason why Oxygen has such a high CPU score.

I know basically what GPU and hardware acceleration means. And, to turn on hardware acceleration, you need the support of: 1. hardware; 2. O/S and driver; 3. software application. So, to prove that a certain ROM is h/w acceleration supported and measure the performance, we need to find a compatible software.
And, there are usually two kinds of h/w acceleration: 3D animation, and HD video.
U8800's GPU is Adreno 205, shoud be very good at 3D. But the performance is not that good. I think we need more optimization of the O/S and drivers.

Advice for comparing all the roms we have

I'm currently using the "Jellybean Port from Desire S," and wanted to possibly venture out and try other roms. I'm mainly looking for the fastest/smoothest rom, which marshmallow says it is. I don't really care about all the bells and whistles, just speed and overall saving of battery life is what i'm mainly looking for. So I just wanted to know what you guys think.
By the way 0.0 I like the audio plugin over-heating "feature" for the jellybean port. I'm in a colder climate so it keeps my left hand nice and toasty

Fast enough for me. Turn off the animations and overclock it a little.
I've been on this ROM for like the past 2 months now, and I'm going to stay on it til my upgrade this month.
I should specify when i say "fastest" i mean lowest resource footprint, and thus faster application load/run times. At least that's what I'm assuming causes faster run times, unless there are other factors i'm unaware about.

performance v50018 vs 20a

I installed the new official rom v50020a and are disappointed with performance especially in games. That performance was superior v18a. This rom seemed to me the most powerful than all roms, since the battery is emptied very quickly, especially in stand by. In AnTuTu benchmark 18a give almost 27,000 and v20a less than 24,000. In Real Racing 3 feel the difference. V50020a is final rom for OTA? Performance and battery worse than the first official rom. I think I'll go back to 4.2.2.

The problem is that the rom v18 of battery empties very quickly in standby. I have to install a custom rom based on v18 with another kernel.

What do you call 'very quickly'? I found it emptied slower than with 4.2.2 in standby with WiFi on.
I set the wi-fi to be turned off when the tablet is in stand by. It is among the settings after installing a new rom.

I overdid it a little with unloading the battery. Battery runs exactly I was wi-fi settings on standby.

Make sure that you have UNinstalled the flash player installed in your device if you have one installed first and then install the hacked one for compatibility reason.
1) Download Dolphin Browser from the Play Store
[/B]You MUST have Dolphin Jetpack on in the settings to enjoy it.
As far as I have noticed, Dolphin Jetpack better solves the compatibility with flash player, such as crash issue & freeze issue in full screen.
2) Download the hacked flash player HERE: http://goo.gl/MuU9SU
If your device refused to install apk outside Google Play, you need to change your settings in your device (Settings> Securities> Unknown resources) to allow installation of apps from unknown sources.
3) Make sure that the flash setting in Dolphin Browser (Click Menu>Settings>Web Content>Flash Player) is on.

Your setup and phone use is completely unique. Anyone else's battery life will not give you the slightest clue as to what yours might be.

Can anyone post a cycle of their battery life with this kernel? And a benchmark would be nice too(I know what you'll say but please one would be appreciated thanks!). Thanks!

Benchmarks are different from device to device. They're not a true statement about a kernels performance. I get insane battery, I get lightning fast speeds and I love using the kernel. This is a discussion of the kernel in this thread, that's why I started it. This is not an official Dev thread, that will come later from the Dev. Of you're interested in it, head over to precog.me and read the official kernel page.

Why?
Your setup and phone use is completely unique. Anyone else's battery life will not give you the slightest clue as to what yours might be.
Flash it and see for yourself.

Actually it can serve as basis. For example if that user is able to achieve 10hrs SOT, then at least I know that the kernel is capable of going that far. No matter how you force a kernel, if it has bad battery life then it can never achieve high SOTs. It actually us very helpful for one to post battery stats because I can then adjust and try to get close or even surpass the user's settings.
With all due respect, I think you are wrong in saying it won't give me the slightest clue of what the battery life of mine will be. It actually can tell a lot(if I'm doing things wrong or right). That's how users learn how to improve their devices by getting tips from others. And for that reason I'm refraining from flashing it because I have a very good set-up. I know I can go back just with flashing the stock kernel, but we all know that sometimes it doesn't really work 100%. "Something" gets broken somehow at a random chance.

Fair enough, but I still disagree.
For example - on my last cycle I got nearly 8 hours SOT and about 1 day 13 hours on one charge. What can one infer from that? I say another user can infer very little, there are way too many variables.
I use Alliance ROM. This was my first cycle with this kernel. I use only 100% black wallpapers, system, desktop, and lockscreen are all black. One homescreen. Brightness about 40% except for videos. Tasker is set so that screen off=WiFi and data off, and I use a flip cover. I've deleted over 100 apps. I've removed about 25 autostarts with SD Maid, usually only use about 750 mb at startup. I never sync anything whatsoever. Two widgets, clock/weather and music. Location is always off unless I'm navigating.
I could go on, there's more, but I hope you see my point. And that's before the vast amount of kernel tweaks I've set up with Faux Clock, which I'll probably tweak further. And I haven't even mentioned my usage....
With further cycles I'll probably squeeze more juice out of it, who knows?
If you think this will give you any idea about your battery life, fine. But I can't see how it can.
As for benchmarks - a waste of time if you're comparing with another device, only remotely useful if you're comparing performance with different setups on the same phone, IMHO.

battery life regarding custom roms / kernels

i've just bought the oneplus 5 a week ago and i am very impressed with the phone so far but i want some help regarding battery life i'm getting mostly 6-7 hrs of SOT on OOS which is very impressive but i've seen some people here getting like 10 hrs of SOT i'm not a heavy user i mostly use the phone for youtube and music streaming services such as spotify and i also use facebook, snaptchat and whatsapp also my phone is always connected to wifi and i don't do any heavy gaming on the phone so can anybody recommend a good battery friendly rom and kernel which would push my SOT up a notch i've seen in some posts that the lightning kernel with the spectrum app helps alot but i really don't know
i've tried to attach some screenshots of accubattery to show my usage and battery health but it's not allowing me to post links or images it's the first time i make a thread and also i never go past 50% brightness if anybody could provide any suggestions for me i'd truly appreciate it thank you
For me at least, it's hard to say. I know this might not be the answer you're looking for, but the best thing in my opinion, would be to just flash a few ROMs and see which provides the optimal features+battery life for you.
My usage is going to be different from you, so if I say "X" ROM gives me 10 hours of SOT, that may not hold true for you.
Even though you provided some info on what your usage is like, I'd still recommend just flashing and testing out yourself! I feel you'd get the best idea by experiencing ROMs out there first-hand, rather than others recommending what they use/is best for them!

But no Bluetooth on that ROM..
The Rom itself is incredibly smooth.. Like really, really smooth.. ? But no Bluetooth is a deal breaker

If you are encrypted then Bluetooth media will work, just not Bluetooth calls. For me, Bluetooth calls is not a deal breaker, and I think the dev is working on a fix for an upcoming build; don't quote me on that though lol

Oooh I see.. .. I was trying to get it to work with multirom and no dice T__T
Thanks for the information
Franco kernel is geared towards battery life rather than phone performance. I've honestly never been a fan of his kernels but a lot of people swear by them.
