thats pretty great except for the sound on that video!
Using this method can our carrier still see us tethering though? On my 6P I use an app that requires root and it completely hides my tethering usage. But not planning to root the Pixel so I'm wondering if this method hides it. Thanks!
My apologies, I just wanted to quickly post a video and participate. Next time, I will edit!

Been doing some testing with mine which is on T-Mobile. After adding the dun=0 with adb I can enable without a problem on my grandfathered plan. But they still throttle after 100mb of usage. So far I haven't found a way around this on any device I have.
The only thing that worked on the other phones is pdanet wired tethering. Wish I could find a way to get wireless tethering working like the good old days.

just add the following line the bottom of your build.prop.
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
7.1.1 update on pixel (Google play store) also ruined this for me. The network signal refresher workaround worked great before the update.

This version allows users to successfully change the SSID and add a passphrase. Compliments to "Italianguy"

Download WiFi Tether for Root Users.
Go into Settings and make the following changes.
change device profile to galaxy nexus (cdma/lte)
check box: wifi-driver reload
check box: enabled routing fix
That's it. Go back and push to start tethering.
Note: this is only valuable to users with unlimited DATA if you have a certain amount of DATA then watch your usage and you should also be able to use native (Verizon) tethering.
Cheers!

Some carriers block and also depends on what plan you have... Verizon share plan has anything over 4 gig share you get free hotspot.

I don't think that was what he was replying to. It obviously allows you to specifically grant access to the devices that should be getting it and not allow access to anyone that can see the SSID. Towards the bottom of the first post, it was asked if anyone knew how to create a password, to please post it. I'm pretty sure that is all he was responding to.
Prior to the Moto X, I had a Gnex, so I haven't used this app in quite some time, but when I did use it, the encryption was WEP and did funny things. Access control is just fine for me, and I'm not sure why anyone would care THAT much about SSID.
Its the SSID and the password that can't be changed. I could see why someone would want to have a password on their network. Mac address control is not very secure at all.
Sent from my XT1056 using Tapatalk 4
I followed the instructions but when I try to connect my ipad to my phone it tells me "unable to join the network". Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
Played around with settings and this is what I did:
Device profile: Generic ICS/JB(wlan0)
Set up Method: Auto
Wifi driver reload AND wifi driver reload 2: checked
Enable access control: check
Keep alive connection: check
Make sure MSS clamping and Routing fix are both checked. Now it runs buttery smooth and speeds are great!
This is one of the only reasons I root, I don't do roms just strictly tethering. Hope this helps someone that was in my situation as well.

It's secure enough for this purpose. Yes, they can be spoofed, and yes MAC's can be sniffed out from simple packet watching, however, an attacker would need knowledge of this to even try it, as well as the hotspot would need to be up long enough to care.
I would definitely *prefer* the ability to change SSID and password, but I'm not losing sleep over it.

In chrome use the addon UA Spoofer and just tether with built in Sprint application, I set the spoof to Safari and all sites look normal and Netflix works as well. you can try Pda Net or Klink Red Edition, they both spoof from the app but you can only try them for a bit then need to pay to own them. I bought Klink when I was on Sprint and used it every day for a year lol, Klink is usb tether only while Pda Net has wifi but you'll have to test it out see if it works for you.

Hi,
I was setting up this phone for my brother. Was surprised to see no root, roms, or unlocking as this is a really nice phone for the price.
I'm not a super gung ho android dev, but I have some reverse engineering experience so I'm gonna see if I can make some shellcode run on an apk or library with root perms and get a root shell running. No promises.
Anyway: If you want tethering, the Power Toggles app will turn on the hotspot without checking to see if you have hotspot account permissions on Boost. Set it up in the More Settings part of Android's Settings, it is the built-in Android tethering code.

It works great with 305SH (I tryed bluetooth).
Yes, with some programs tethering is active but teams are not conecting to the internet, is blockage for the operator in the case of 306 is boost mobile or sprint, someone will know how to disable this block

foxfi works
Paid app called foxfi works for WiFi/USB tethering. Bluetooth tethering untested. Runs around $5 has a trail version with data caps for tethering. PDA net reqired on PC for USB tethering. No root required.
---------- Post added at 02:01 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:53 AM ----------
I use my aquos as a WiFi dongle for my laptop router>(WiFi)>aquos>(USB thether)>PC
I've used it spairingly as a WiFi hotspot so if boost sends you messages quarrying into how your using hotspot and why your not paying for it and any possible consequences that may occur is on you, I'm not responsible.
---------- Post added at 02:35 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:01 AM ----------
Would also like to clarify 306sh on boost mobile. Only tested on that network (obviously that model). So results may vary. Just use the Fofxi sprint app, you purchase a key to unlock paid version for regular and sprint I.e. one time buy for both versions on 1 google account=possible no root solution to free hotspot on multiple devices down the road . (I'm assuming it works with sprints but they charge overages so unless your somehow still grandfathered in to an unlimited plan I'd recommend against it) that works with boost, Straighttalk (Walmarts Tracphone plan), and virgin mobile, that I've tested, but is a hit or miss on phone models, so far only phone I've seen it work on KitKat so yay sharp for not caring about blocking app permission to hotspot toggle, don't update you might lose feature from app and have to wait till root.
Another's person can confirm that with boost Mobile and how I can do
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Free mobile app

Is that a free app and does it work after latest update, foxfi (part of pdanet) works as well. My guess is the same reason but is a paid app so this seems much more promising since its free. Anyone had any luck with this? I can't find the file that OMJ is talking about to save my life. I don't see any attachments.

I can't get it to work on mine! I've achieved root, installed the app, matched all the settings up....no internet connection. It's strange, my Ipad can see the network and it says it's connected. As soon as I connect it though I lose internet connection on both devices, can't load a single web page. Did you have this issue at all or would you have any idea what would cause this? I'm at my wits end with it, and I've used this app for 2 years on my M8.

HAH. I couldn't get it to work with this app (not initially anyway). I turned to his site to check if there were settings already available to use for the HTC 10 because it couldn't auto-detect the wifi adapter name. On his site, it says HTC users need to uninstall "TetherGuard" - system app.
Did that, figured I'd reboot and try the built in tethering which now works beautifully. Got it still within my refund window for Wifi Tether Router.
So some combination of what I posted above plus UNINSTALL TETHERGUARD! And life's good now. Thanks much.

You can use Titanium Backup to uninstall TetherGuard since you're rooted, instead of just disabling it.
Anyone want to post the specific changes/tweaks they've done? I've done changes to build.prop and default.xml (using the various settings found all over XDA) and also disabled/removed TetherGuard, but I'm still stuck at hotspot enabling but no data connection for any connected devices (data still works for the phone while hotspot is on though).
