[Q] Music Transfer Problems

I purchased a Samsung GT-I5801 Android phone and a 32GB micro sdhc card. My goal was to use it as a smart phone and an mp3 player; essentially as an iphone at a fraction of the price. The phone works great and the android apps are fun, but the mp3 player functionality has eluded me. I have about 20GB of music and I can’t get it onto the card and/or into the phone.
I have tried transferring the data directly onto the card in two different laptops (both running windows xp sp3-hotfixed to recognize high capacity sdhc cards). Both computers can see the cards and recognize them as 32GB cards. I can transfer files back and forth from the card. I have used windows explorer to transfer the files as well as other programs: Windows Media Player, Media Monkey, FreeFileSync, Doubletwist, Winamp, and Samsung Keis.
I have also tried transferring the music to the phone with the card installed in the phone. I have tried this via all the above programs, including wirelessly transferring via Winamp. The process either stops and/or fails unexpectedly (twice producing the blue screen of death) or appears to complete successfully but turns out to only produce 2GB of music on the card while showing 20GB of space used on the card. The entire file structure for the music files is there but most of the files are empty even though the transfer process shows that they should be there. Then, when I remove and install the card again, the 18GB of space is freed up again to show that only 2GB (or less) of music is there. It is not always the same 2GB of music either. It seems random as to what files are transferred.
I have done a factory reset on the phone twice to make sure that it’s not the corrupted music database on the phone that is preventing all the music being recognized. I have also reformatted the card 3 times during this process. I have tried the following usb connections settings options in the phone: Keis, media player, and mass storage. I have also tried with usb debugging turned on and turned off.
I have a couple of questions:
1- Has anyone else had similar problems and how did you solve it?
2- Is there a maximum file limit per directory, or for music in general?
I’m at the end of my rope here, and am starting to wonder if the money I’ve saved by not buying an Iphone is worth the time and aggravation of this process. I have never posted a question on a tech forum before, but I’m desperate after spending a couple of weeks trying to solve this on my own.

is the card working on your friends phone? you must have atleast one guy who has a mobile which supports 32 gb card transfer all the music you want and see if all songs are detected in that mobile or not, if not your memory card is defective otherwise there is problem in your mobile.

Thank you for your reply. According to the specs on my netbook (Samsung NP-NC10) the reader is sdhc compatible. I have ordered an usb sdhc card reader to test the theory. I'll let you know how that works. I have formatted the card at least 3 times in my phone and have tried to transfer files with the card installed in my phone via the supplied usb connection cable. I have the same results.

Am I right in assuming that if my phone and sdhc card are working properly then I should have no problems transferring a large amount of music?
Has anyone else transfered 20GB of music to their Android and had success using it as an mp3 player?

have you test your 32gb sd card is real 32gb?
try hdtune or other tools like in windows ,or try full format in windows ?
if windows is hang ,over 2gb is can't read and write ...

Thank you for your suggestion to use hdtune. I tested my card with hdtune pro and it is a 32gb card that is healthy and has no errors.
I guess this means that I have a bad mobile? I wonder about transfering all my files again and then trying a factory reset on the phone.
I have not considered rooting the phone as I am new to this, but would that be a potential solution for this problem?

is in hdtune error scan ,full scan 32gb is not error?

Update on progress
I have now checked the card using hdtune and reformatted it twice. hdtune detected no errors at any time.
I also purchased a usb sdhc card reader specifically. Just in case my built in readers were malfunctioning, but that has not solved the problem either.
I can transfer the files to the card. I can even read and access the files on the card on my computer. However, when I put the card into the phone, but files are not there, and the file folders are empty. Then, when I put the card back into my computer the files are gone.
I found this link on another forum with the same problem. While it is comforting to know that I am not the only one with this problem, I am still looking for a solution. Has anyone found one?

Found the problem!
I downloaded the H2test and used it to test my card. hdtune and windows did not discover the problems with the card, but this program did.
Apparently I purchased a 2gb card that was labeled as a 32gb card. The packaging and printing on the card all look like a legitimate Kingston class 4 32 gb sd card, but the actual card only has 2 gb capacity.
Apparently, the card tricked my windows computers by writing an index for all of the files I was transferring but only actually transferring up to 2 gb of data. That is why I could read some of the files on my phone, but not others.
If you are having similar problems, I would highly recommend this program!

New SD card

Heya
i just got myself a brandnew sd card with 32gb capacity and wanted to use it right away. So i just plugged in the old sd card and the new one and copied everything from old to new via Windows.
After unplugging I put in the new card, switched my htc on and was surprised to find only a few directories and thats all. Its like everything got deleted right after unplugging or inserting. I also seem to have problems downloading pdfs with the new card :
any ideas?

Did you simply unplug it or did you actually 'eject it'.
Some devices and cards under windows are not set for immediate eject, which means while the progress of copying may appear to be done, it's still finishing up the transfer in the background which would have warned you if you attempted to 'eject it' as opposed to simply unplugging it.
Did you try formatting the card in the phone first, and then transferring files to it? The manner in which windows may format it may not be entirely compatible to your phone especially at 32GB size (at the edge of SDHC support, as the DZ/G2 does not support SDXC).
Also what brand, model, etc etc etc is the 'brand new 32gb sd' ?

Problems writing image to microSD

About a year ago, my wife got an NC and I installed CM7 on a microSD card. She loves the NC/CM7 combo. A week ago, I got a NC for my birthday. But I cannot get write the image to the microSD card. Any and all help would be appreciated.
My problem is that when I try to write the image to the card (on Win7, using three different image writers), I get the error message that says "Error in writing disk Disk 1, error 5, access is denied." I have browsed all the threads and searched them. I have also searched the internet. It seems that the problem is that something else is accessing the microSD card, or at least the image writer thinks that that is true, and write access is denied.
I have browsed all the NC threads on this board and searched the internet. It seems that the most common response was to use a different image writer. I have used WinImage, Win32DiskImager and RoadKill. I get the same error message on all of them. I have tried to track down what program/process might be accessing the card, and haven't found any. (Based on my reading in this forum, I have made sure that no Explorer window is open.)
The only advice I've read which I haven't tried yet is to use an external card reader. I have an HP G62 laptop with a built-in card reader. (And it was this system which I used to mod my wife's NC, so I know that the hardware used to work.) I would really like to NOT buy an external card reader, which is why I'm trying to track this down.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Particularly, is there a way in Win7 to identify any programs/processes which are accessing the microSD card?

Why do you NOT want to buy an external card reader? It is most likely the cause of your issue. They are cheap (less than $5) and readily available. EBay has them for 99¢.

I don't think I need another thing lying around that I'll use once. But if it solves the problem, I guess it is worth it.

It is a SanDisk 4gb Class 4. I think my next step is to get a new card and see if that works. If it doesn't, then I'll get an external card reader.

SanDisk is absolutely compatible, so the brand is not an issue.

Since you are obviously using an SD adapter to be able to fit it into the PC card reader, that could be bad too. In fact some card adapters have a write protect switch on them to prevent accidental writing.
If you get an external micro card reader you can throw away that card adapter and have one less thing laying around.

Hmmm . . . I have gotten another microSD card (Sandisk 4gb Class 4); that didn't work -- got same error message. So I bought a microSD card reader. And I got the same error message. Win7 insists that something is accessing this microSD card at the same time I am trying to write the image onto it.
That just about exhausts the solutions I've come across in this forum and across the internet. So now back to the last question I asked in my original post:
Particularly, is there a way in Win7 to identify any programs/processes which are accessing the microSD card?
If there is a program/process accessing the card, I can terminate that process. Any help??

I have solved the problem, by seemingly breaking several "rules."
First, after inserting the microSD card into the onboard reader (nestled into its adapter), I then removed the card without properly ejecting it then reinserted it. Second, I then used WinImage to write the image onto the card using the "Write" command (after choosing the disc under the "Disk" menu and opening the image using "File/Open," I then used "Disk/Write"). Everything seemed to work as it should -- the progress bar incremented up until the files were written 100% and all seems to work fine on the Nook.

[Q] Question on Sandisk Ultra Class-10 64GB microSDXC

I have some questions to pose regarding the Sandisk Ultra 64GB Class 10 microSDXC.
I bought it about a month ago, and when i first put it into my Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505, it didn't read anywhere near 64GB. Hence, i formatted the new microSD with Samsung's format option, and it showed 59.48GB. Worked perfectly from there.
However, i find the default file system of the microSD card really slow in transferring files when i connect my phone to the PC via USB, with the microSD mounted on my phone. I have a Kingston microSD reader, so i used it to connect my microSD to the PC, and tried to wipe and format it to FAT32. After doing so, the storage size became like 27GB. Is there a way to make my microSD running FAT32 system and get it to work on both my PC and phone without any problems with the size?
Anyway, i formatted the microSD again with Samsung's format option, and it went back to normal 59.48GB. However, i used my microSD reader to connect it to the PC, and it couldn't read the microSD card. It prompts me to format it. Is it because my microSD reader does not work with microSDHX cards? Or is it because my Windows PC cannot read the microSD's file system?
Hope someone has an answer, thanks.

So you could use the memory card in your card reader after formatting the card as FAT32?
What OS are you running on your PC? If it's Windows XP, support for exFAT needs to be added. You can find more on this here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955704

use a program such as H2testw to see if your microsd card is fake or defective . You can get it from here or google it .

I found the solution. The Kingston USB reader that i used is actually not compatible with my Sandisk MicroSDXC. That's the reason it couldn't read my microSD when i connected it to the PC. I used the SD card adapter that came with the microSD on a newer laptop which has the port, and it read my card perfectly.
Anyway, i ended up putting my microSD back to my phone and formatting it using the Samsung option. Then, i used a program to format the microSD to FAT32, which i don't think is actually necessary as there wasn't any reading/writing speed difference when it came to transferring files.

When I opened the packaging, the card first asked me to format the card fr use. At first, The SDHC card worked fine.

It's like the card isn't reading at all..

I've been playing with Windows since Android's grandfather was a tadpole, so in a combination of research and personal expertise I present the following advice...
DO NOT install a SD of a Class other than what is listed in our phone's Hardware Compatibility List - they being a Class 10 MicroSD, MicroSDHC and MicroSDXC - beyond that of 32GB, as you're only looking for trouble. Sometimes bigger is not necessarily better - just ask the people who knew the man that ate himself to death. NAND technologies are getting better by the day, but unfortunately devices grow increasingly incompatible with newer variants of MicroSD's simply because of the changes made within the firmware of the NAND controller. By changing Class outside of the scope of our phone's capability, problems can arise. Kind of like having a PC and trying to use a SATA-M drive on it. Unless you've got the physical hardware and device drivers installed, you can't expect it to work properly, same as throwing a SATA3 drive on a SATA2 port and expecting it to transfer data at over 3Gbps. If you find you are so desperate that you just can't do without having a 64GB card installed, go to eBay and grab yourself a Genuine Samsung 64GB 'Evo' Class 10 MicroSDXC. They are the fastest and highest capacity MicroSD our device will be friendly with (due to NAND controller compatibility) and at the moment they're going for good prices. Once you get it, Format the thing on your phone first, according to Samsung's instructions for installing the card. You'll then have a bit less than 60GB of storage space, along with Samsung backup if something does go wrong, simply because you're running a Samsung card in a Samsung phone. Trust me, its a great combination, proven by the fact my Samsung laptop runs like a dream on the Samsung 840Pro series SSD it has in it's belly...

128gb micro sd card problems

Hello All
I bought a 128gb micro sd card for my z3 compact only to find out that i will need to format the card to fat32, which seems to be impossible now, i cant even format mat it to anything now let alone to fat32.
I have tried as many way to do this as possible but i keep getting errors of "format didnt complete" or some variation of that.
I have tried using cmd prompt, GUIFORMAT, windows disk managment and multiple youtuve videos.
I have read that the phone can take this type of card if you can format it to fat32. If someone has achieved this or has any advice, it would be greatly appriciated.

Get a refund as soon as possible. You almost definitely received either a dud or a counterfeit. If you do end up being able to format it (any file system will do) run this:

If that reports it's stable, try formatting it as NTFS in Windows. FAT32 can't handle files larger than 4gb, and exFAT isn't compatible with Android, iirc.

i think the card is messed up, i cant even open it in windows, acting if its not even there. Even in the properties i get no deteials, everything is 0. Putting it in my phone even says sd card is damaged.
I keep reading people have these cards in tehir phones and tablets. Are you aware of a way to do this?
im sending this card back and getting either a smaller one or research into how others have managed to do it.

If it is a sdxc card, u tried to Format it via phone? Never had problems with my 64gb card

I have 128GB card too. Just put it in the phone and let it determine the type it wants. After insert the card, open setting - storage - erase SD Card. Then the 128GB should become exFat.

I have a 128gb SanDisk card in my phone atm. I formatted it to exfat on Windows 8.1 and then inserted it into my phone and formatted it again using the phones format sdcard option. (cus I'm thorough like that)
Currently it is listed as being formatted as texfat.

I'm not sure what you're asking here exactly, but when a card works *properly* you can just insert into basically any device and it'll format it in a few different ways, not unlike a usb flash drive.
I've had your exact problem before, though. I bought a 128gb sd card from a seller with a really high rating on Ebay, but it was for $55 and I should've known better. It was almost definately a 32GB or 64GB disk that had been re-partitioned to look like a higher capacity drive. The 'new' disk would destroy any data copied over to it after a certain limit was reached, a limit that got smaller and smaller the longer I held on to it. I'd format it, start copying, the copy would fail, the disk would eject itself, Windows wouldn't recognize it until formatting it, rinse repeat forever. I wasn't even trying to fill it to the brim, 'just' my 55ish GB music collection. I ended up actually finding one for $80 on Amazon, which ended up working flawlessly.
If you don't mind my asking, where did you buy it from? How much did you pay? What was the seller's ranking and review history like?

I have had similar experiences myself with micro sd cards from eBay. It seems to be inconsistent regarding particular sellers and the quality of the cards. I would imagine there are sellers also getting scammed by wholesalers claiming to have legitimate cards.
Needless to say, I only buy micro sd cards now from sellers that are
A) in my home country, where I know they are bound by local law regarding faulty goods
B) selling brand name micro sd cards in their original packaging.
I might not save as much money by playing it safe, but it's worth it to be able to rely on a product and have a local warranty to back it up.

I've had problems with Busybox installed on phone and it corrupting SD cards somehow, "Busybox on rails" was the fix for me, also it seemed to fix the damaged??? SD card after a reformat.

I also experienced similar problems with my 64gb card. It worked flawless in my Phone for some months, but when i put it in a defective card reader and connected it to my NAS, the card seemed dead. My Phone said the card was corrupted and it wasn't able to format it. My Windows PC didn't recognize it at all. Also "sd formatter" which never failed in the past, couldn't get the card back to life.
So I checked the card with fdisk under linux and I could see, that the partition table was totally messed up. I deleted the partition table and after that the card was working again.
No problems in the last 2 months. And since I have a fully automated daily backup to my local NAS, there is no need to exchange the card "just in case".
