Hey everyone,
I've tried searching, but no luck, so here's my issue.
My nexus 7 was around 25% battery last night so I plugged it in for the night.
Woke up this morning and the backlight was on, but the screen was off.
When I unplugged my n7 the backlight turned off. Hitting the power button had no effect.
I then tried pushing and holding the power button for roughly a minute, nothing.
I have disconnected the battery and still no response from the unit.
I plugged it back in for roughly a minute as well, still nothing.
Unfortunately I don't have access to a charger right now.
Is it possible the battery is dead even though it was on the charger all night?

Weird.
Just plugged it in to my car charger and it booted up. Battery is completely dead, so I guess with the backlight staying on all night it didn't charge.
Now why would the backlight stay on if the screen is off...

Don't go flashing different roms and kernels now like most of the idiots here, it could just have been your charger being faulty or a bad connection to the tablet overnight. if the problem happens again then you can investigate further.
BTW, were you charging from your PC/Laptop with a USB cable or through a wall adapter? i've had issues in the past charging my Nexus 4 and 7 not charging overnight on my PC
I feel like a broken record but since I've fixed a ton of n7s with loose battery connections, I would recommend checking the internal battery lead to make sure its not loose. Asus didn't do a good job of making sure all n7 batteries were secure and this allowed the battery to shift and pull the power lead out. Some clear scotch tape on the connector and one on the battery (avoid the copper tape areas) will eliminate this problem if that's what you have.

I ran into this problem. Initially, my Nexus 7 didn't start. When I plug in the charger the screen would flicker from time to time but there's no indication of charging. So I decided to open it up to see that the battery cable has loosened. So I managed to fix it and use it happily thinking that it won't happen again.
Since last week, the same issue happened. I thought it was the same issue and opened it up to see that the battery cable is firmly in place. So I got a shock. I removed it and re-inserted it again to see if it fixed it. But nope, it won't turn on. And now it's been a week and I don't know what to do It's nothing wrong with the loose cable cuz now it's firmly in place.
Now when I plug it in to charge, the screen will just flicker (as in the back light will turn on and off in 5 sec intervals). What do you think I should do? I tried holding the power button for 30 secs as well.
I bought this new from eBay and still under warranty. But I live in Sri Lanka. So when I bought it, I had to ship to a friend in the US and had to wait till he came down. So it's not easy for me to ship back and to receive another device. Hopefully I can find a solution to fix this myself.

Make sure that the cables between the battery and the connector are intact and not broken. One or two people reported a broken cable.
Does it boot while plugged in to the charger with the battery disconnected ? You could simply have a bad battery.

I checked again. The cables aren't broken. They are all in good shape.
It doesn't boot when I plug in. Actually it doesn't show anything on the screen. If I look closely I can see static flicker on the screen from time to time. Just like the static in TV but much much less. Like only a few of those in certain places.
When this happened the first time I opened it up to see the loose cable. So fixing that helped it then. But now I dunno what's causing it.

Might have to try a different charger, maybe something stronger. I JUST had that problem with my GF Nexus 7. It wouldn't boot with her normal charger and the screen would flicker like a TV. I used my Nexus 4 charger and it worked.
She had left the battery fully drain for over two weeks and I think the battery didn't appreciate it.

So i was charging my phone with a wireless gear 5wc800 and suddenly there was a strange smell.
I head over to my phone and noticed the smell came from there.
I looked the charger and the thing was so damn hot i couldn't even touch it at the upper part.
Luckily my phone didn't get that hot and nothing has happened to it. :angel:
Also the plastic is melted away at the upper part of the charger.
All be warned.
Thanks for the warning. I got one of these chargers but since it barely charged my phone I haven't been using it. I'll just throw it out now. Thanks!

Sorry to hear about the melting, although I do think it's funny how the melting is right by the QC Passed sticker.
Yesterday I used my N7 while running errands & it was parked in the long neck windshield mount I have for it. This is the first time I've done this. I work third shift and it's usually night or early morning (and cool) when I'm driving with the tablet. Yesterday it was hot and the sun was shining. I didn't leave it in the car but it got hot riding around. I kept it plugged into my car charger the entire time (2 amp charger that fast charges). It stayed charged up most of the day but at some point it stopped charging. I noticed when I got home and the charging animation had stopped.
I took it in & plugged it into the wall A/C charger but it still did not report as charging. I just thought the battery was hot from being in the sun all day & had tripped some thermal sensor that prevented charge. I kept it on & plugged in thinking it would start back up when the battery cooled off. Nope.
The tablet is @ 6% now. I is off completely now and I don't have enough charge left to do a nandroid. I've tried all kinds of combinations of chargers and cables but it refuses to charge.
Did the heat kill the battery or some of the circuitry?
Is there any way to back this N7 up?
I'm planning on getting a new one when the new models come out anyway but I'd at least like to get a backup off of this one...
Edit: I updated my sig before submitting this post but it's not showing up yet.
I'm running Trinity Kernel & RasbeanJelly. Both are up to date.
Update: For anyone interested, I found & fixed the problem. I took the back off & was looking around for anything obvious. I knew the problem had to be either the battery or the usb port (or the electronics for either one). The battery is pretty much self contained so not much I could do there. The usb port is screwed down under the speakers and there is a flat ribbon cable that runs from it up to the logic board. The connector on the board is covered by a piece of black electrical tape type material. That is where the problem was.
There is no locking mechanism for keeping the ribbon cable seated in the connector. It is only held in place by the tape. When my Nexus got hot, the adhesive on the tape failed and the ribbon cable must have moved just enough to disconnect it. Thus preventing power getting from the port to the logic board and battery.
I reconnected the cable & reapplied the tape.
Problem solved!
On a side note, this week without my Nexus made me realize just how much I love this tablet. I have a Nook color running CM7 and an HP Touchpad running CM9 that I used as backups but the Nook was way too slow and the Touchpad was too big to be convenient. I can't wait for the new version...

I suggest putting some hot glue or 2 part apoxy on that ribbon cable to keep it from happening again.

Before anyone go crazy, it's most likely my fault. Since the battery is superglued to the phone I had to bend it pretty hard when I replaced the screen. And it was probably damaged
Anyway 6 month later my battery expanded and broke the glass back. There is a very visible bulge on the back (~1/16" thick), on a flat surface the phone wobble. I don't know when or how it happened, at some point I got the phone out of my pocket and it was broke.
I have a strong suspicion it happened while using a 2.4A/12V car charger at -25°C.
My real question (TL;DR) : Is there a risk using a 2.4A/12V car charger ? (my previous one was a 1A and it was barely charging the phone)
Doesnt matter what the current output of the charger is. The device has current limiting technology. It will max out at 1A so if your using a 2A charger your fine.
Also the car puts out 12VDC but it gets stepped down to 5V at the micro usb port. Thats the industry standard.
Now when you bent your battery you started the process of damaging it. Li-Ion batteries have a very thin sheet with paste on it and that is wound up with many layers. By bending it you probably flexed the thin sheet and that soft spot eventually broke and when that happens a chemical process begins to break down the battery. The bulging you are seeing is a buildup of gasses inside the sealed battery its self. When a battery begins to bulge its going bad. This can also happen prematurely if you expose it to over heating repeatedly OR for a long period of time, OR if you allow the battery voltage to drop to low for to long. Li-Ion just doesnt like heat or low voltage.
I concur with IAmSixNine you need to either replace the battery or get a new phone. And be sure to dispose of it properly. I had the same problem years and years ago with an old HTC touch diamond. The battery started bulging and I eventually had to remove the cover and use tape to hold it in. After a couple weeks it burst and it wasn't a pretty site... Pretty dangerous carrying around a battery that could explode in your pocket at any time.

Thanks, good to know that the charger can't damage the battery, I have purchased a new battery lets just hope this one does not explode in the mean time
Ive replaced the battery, the first charge took 8hour to 90% and now it wont charger over 50% is there a way to reset the battery limit ?

let it cycle a few times to correct the battery information.
That means let it die down completely, then charge it completely. Do that a few times and if it still causing issues its possibly a bad battery.
I think I also have a faulty charging port, only the wireless charging is working now, when I plug into any usb there is the lightning icon but it says not charging. I'll switch the daughter board with the one from my other broken nexus 4 to see if it fix the issue.
As much as I like my Nexus 4, I'm not impressed by reliability. In under 2 year, I've had 2 broken screen, 1 broken bake cover, 1 expanded battery and now possibly the charging port. My nexus S and Galaxy nexus with a million drop each are still working as new
One of my friends got one and broke his before the 2 month mark. He was ribbing me about getting a case for it and making it more bulky. I was not the better man...
Guys I want to just make you all aware if you have any of those unofficial magnetic charging cables please be very wary of using them.
I noticed over the course of a week the phone would be sat on the desk and and I had a cable charging through the magnetic port but it would stop charging.
I **** you not the cable literally pulled out the charging port directly away from the phone. Now luckily the port has to 'fin' pins (only glued in by the looks of it) and I was able to push them back in and it would charge...however it certainly was not dust and waterproof anymore!!!
Any way I took it back to Carphone warehouse (told them i was using the DK36 official charger..do not tell them you use a third party one) and they sent it away for repair. I have been told today that they are just swapping it out for a new one which should be back with me next week.
WORD OF WARNING...IM NEVER USING AN UNOFFICIAL CABLE EVER AGAIN!
has this happened to any of you before? I purchased the one that is available from mobilefun.co.uk but I advise you not too as either the port is weak or the magnet on the cable is too strong (it did not feel that way though!!!).
Lets hope it does not happen again! this is the third Z2 I have had now with the new one I get. FML.
It might be the fault of the phone. I have an aftermarket magnetic cable and it works fine! I have had the cable for about 7 months.

Yes maybe. When the thing came out still attached to the cable (heart in mouth!) I noticed there was very little bonding (glue) on the rear of the charging point.
Still Sony have been very very lax in the quality control department, the amount of snags people are having is unreal. Like I said I'm onto the third now, such a shame because I actually love the device, my favourite phone of late, I have the M8, Z1 and got rid of the S5 (hated) but the Z2 is my fav!

Well there was defo glue or some sort of bonding agent on the rear face of mine...just not much!
I'm no phone designer but surely they should have manufactured the port with a lip to prevent it it from being pulled out!?!?

That's what I would have assumed too, but looking at my Z2's magnetic port, it does look like it's just made to the same size as the hole on the outside!

Just got my replacement from car phone warehouse yesterday. All seems to be in order...no gaps, dodgy drill holes, loose connectors, crap finishing etc...

I wouldn't say so. Nothing over normal temps.
I would say that the amount of bond used was miniscule like a circle in the middle of the charging point. Not enough in my opinion as the surface area it covered was too small.

I see this appears to be common. How bad is this? I am about to get a Z2 with OEM dock but if this is a common thing perhaps I'll reconsider.

I have been using magnetic charger for two months now. So far it's still intact.
Same here, used magnetic charger seens I bought my Z2 (about 2 month ago) and it works great. Don't have stock desktop charger, bought an adapter cable.

I'm thinking about buying a magnetic charger, but I'm curious as to how people are disconnecting theirs to cause this issue.
My thoughts on it are if you pull it out horizontally, you are obviously putting strain on it by just pulling it off/out. I would have thought the best way to disconnect would be to basically "peel" it off, so that the magnet disconnects at a 90 degree angle. This would then not put any strain on the glue or whatever is used.

I have read a few reviews on some different mag cables and a lot of the aftermarket ones tout how strong the magnetic connection is compared to stock. Maybe the OEM cable was not too strong by design. Also wondering what kind of glue it is holding the port in. I just got my Z2 and I like it a lot so far. The mag cable looks like a great convenience which I'll be buying as soon as I decide I'm definitely keeping the phone (I'm commitment-challenged). Got my phone from B&H Photo and it says they are an authorized Sony dealer, but they are on the other side of the US so I really don't wanna have to ship my phone across country and then wait if I have an issue.
Right, well I have the Sony magnetic charger, I sent it back to sony as I thought it was to blame, it was working then stopped.
However when it was returned to me, I went to use it, the charge started and then stopped, so I thought it was the magnetic dock again, took the phone off the magnetic dock and these was a hole where the docking pins should be . Turns out they were on the magnetic dock! come out completely, so put the charger point bar back in the phone, reconnected and yes it charged but again, when I came to undock, phones charger area left on the dock. So it happens with the OEM dock as well.
Looks like a fight with Vodafone to get the phone repaired.

I have the official Sony Dock, so I can rule out it being 'just' due to the after-market docks. I had noticed before I even started using the magnetic dock that the connector was a bit mobile/loose. So much so that, whilst on holiday and shooting around water, I held my thumb over the connector. When, a couple of weeks later, I started to charge through the port, I noticed that it was making connect/disconnect noises as I was putting it onto the dock. I also noticed that it charged more slowly than via the USB port. Eventually (about a week after having read of the problem on these forums), the connector did stay on the charger, when the phone was removed. I have pushed it back in, but it just drops down, when on the charger, disconnecting from the phone. I am quite sure that it is no longer watertight, as there is a thin layer of quite 'spongy' adhesive tape on the back of the separated connector that is no longer adhesive and you can see quite well into the phone, through the connector holes. I believe that it is repairable (and the watertightness restorable) at little cost, given a competent person, who could strip the adhesive and replace it with something similar, but stronger AND put some strong adhesive around the outside of it, before pushing it back in. It's a shame that something so small is affecting so many people's opinion of Sony and marring an, otherwise, very good phone.
I will be attempting to return mine to the UK operator 'Three', this weekend and, if they are unwilling or unable to help, I will be taking to Twitter and other Social Media sites, to raise the profile to a wider audience... Sony are already doing relatively poorly in the mobile phone marketplace (for a company of their size) and they can sweep this under the carpet and try to ignore it, losing a small number of their 'fans', or they can make a big PR exercise. Any decent company would see this as a marketing opportunity - make direct contact with your customers and win their trust, by fixing a problem. It's their choice - act big or act small...
