I seem to have got myself into a bit of a pickle here.
I had a rooted N7 on 4.2.2. Tried to unroot (in lieu of going up to 4.3). Disaster struck! It wouldn't boot. It would just get stuck at the bootloader and go "Booting failed" or something similar.
So bother, I could get into the bootloader. So I tried to fastboot flash a stock image using this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1907796) guide.
I got a bit further now, it would get the X loading screen but then no amount of waiting would have it boot.
So I tried factory reset from the recovery menu (the one with the Android and the red triangle).
No good, still did the same thing.
So I tried using Nexus Root Toolkit to flash stock + unroot from a soft-bricked/bootloop state. Nope! No good. Still does the same thing.
I've been through every combination of flashing, clearing, resetting but to no avail!
I've tried flashing CWM and TWRP but when I try to get into recovery mode, I just get the Google logo forever. This is a nightmare!
What's going on Have I managed to brick this thing...

Hey,
did you try doing all these manually :
Code:
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot -w update image.zip
PS : Edit these according to images you are trying to flash.
You mentioned you tried the guide but try this once again.
Unlock your bootloader / keep your bootloader unlocked while doing this.
If you want to you can even try running the .bat files and / or .sh files while in the bootloader.
If it still doesnt work , download the latest custom recovery and just try flashing it through
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Please mention the errors you have a bit more in detail during these steps !

Okay, I've managed to get TWRP up and running.
Now... how do I get a ROM onto there to try to flash? >_<
PS. I did all those commands manually many many times. It's got to a stage now where the X logo never actually comes up... Just the Google logo and the little padlock

Amazing. I actually managed to flash a copy of Cyanogen on there and it all booted perfectly.
Now I wonder if I can get it back to stock from here easily..
Thanks

You can ... just make sure you have downloaded the right factory images and flash the use the .bat / .sh to flash the images .. keep in mind that you will lose all your data including that on the internal sd. All the best

Properly stumped as to why it's doing that. Maybe I'm stuck with Cyanogen...

Okay my solution to this:
Just keep flashing it with the flash-all.bat command until it just... worked.
Must've done it about 15 times.
Well that's that ordeal over.
So my VS995 (Verizon LG V20) is stuck in a fastboot loop. I can't do anything outside of fastboot. I got to after step 3 in the Dirty Santa root method and could not get the phone to boot into TWRP recovery. I kept getting an ADB device offline error and could not get ADB to see my device to initiate the "ADB reboot recovery command".
In a stupid and drunk state I did a "fastboot erase system" and thats what locked me into the fastboot loop.
Any help is appreciated as my V20 is now unusable :crying:.
I guess I would need a stock boot image, and stock recovery to get back to where I started. If anyone could point me in the right direction and help me get my phone back (and possibly rooted), I would be more than happy to donate via PayPal .
P.S. The LGUP software used in the how to restore v20 thread linked-> ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/how-to/restore-v20-to-100-stock-bricked-devices-t3524903) does not recognize the model of device giving the error ("you have to select a known model, please")

I was able to flash the appropriate stock .kdz file (THANKS dwertz!) but my phone immediately boots right back into FastBoot Mode
Do I need a stock Boot.img file?
I can communicated with the device through the PC's terminal using fastboot. Are there any fastboot commands I could try to boot into the stock firmware I just flashed? Are there any partitions I need to erase or format?
Any help is appreciated!

to my understanding, the kdz file contains the stock boot.img and stock system.img, everything to bring the device completely back to stock .
In fastboot to boot to the system the command is "fastboot reboot"

After flashing the stock .kdz firmware for the VS995 fastboot is no longer working and giving me the error FAILED (remote: unknown command).
My phone can not get past FastBoot! :crying: I think I really bricked this thing now. My bootloader is locked, fastboot commands don't work at all.
The only thing that does work is download mode (holding volume up and plugging phone in) and I am able to flash the vs995 firmware from the lg website but i STILL can't boot into anything but fastboot.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can try to fix this thing. I think i'm doomed. I may try to flash the stock us996 firmware because at this point it seems like it wont get any worse.
Any help would be appreciated!

Did you flash the kdz using Uppercut?
imucarmen - I can't post in the dirty santa thread because I am a new member to XDA (been coming here for years just never made an account )
bond32 - Yes I was able to flash the .kdz using Uppercut+LGUP but my problem is not fixed. My phone still boots right to FastBoot Mode in the "Locked State" to where I can't issue any commands or alter any partitions.
This makes no sense to me if LGUP is able to 100% flash the stock firmware, WHY CAN'T I GET OUT OF FASTBOOT! Lol
Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could try to unbrick this thing?
I know it's a different issue from the one that I had, but the LG Support Tool method that KedarWolf posted might help solve this issue too.

Did you try pulling the battery, put the battery back in.
Hold the volume down and power button at same time. When the lg logo shows up let go of the power button but continue to hold the volume down and press the power button again. It will bring you to a screen tgat has 2 questions. Answer yes to both of them. Then reboot. I believe that resets the way the phone boots almost like resetting a cmos

i dont know if this will help seince u relocked, but do the factory reset dance
hold the vol down and power and put in battery as soon as its on click the power button and re hold it. it will get to recovery, it took me hours but its there.
I had tried that a few times after reading about it but I'll try now for an extended period of time and see if I can activate it. I'll report back with what happens, thanks for the tip dwertz and Team DevDigitel
Well I got in to the recovery menu and reset to factory settings and wipe cache (the only two options) but I still am booting right into FastBoot and can't escape!
I even flashed the stock .kdz again after the factory reset and wiping cache and I'm still stuck in FastBoot
Any other suggestions to try?

When you have a unlocked boot loader and you do a factory reset, I believe it wipes the OS from the phone giving you no OS. If you can get back to recovery, flash this rom https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/development/vs995-vzw-nrd90m-modded-notsostock-rom-t3525864
That will at least get you booted so you can flash the kdz.
I can't get into any kind of recovery to flash a rom though

Same problem here, did you ever fix it?
Alright so where i'm at now is basically the aftermath of a failed attempt to install a cyanogen unofficial rom for my phone.
I have a p9 lite VNS-L23 dual sim and well basically, i unlocked the bootloader and i rooted it with twrp and installed superuser using the srk tool. Everything worked fine up to this point until i booted into recovery, cleared cache and data etc to do a clean install and the install failed with an error code 7.
I thought doing a twrp backup before the flash was effective but because it didnt take any length of time, i sort of thought it definitely wasnt a full backup but i didnt pay it any attention and tried to flash it anyway since iv'e never had probs flashing anything with other of the phones ive had before which was my main mistake.
Usb debugging was enabled before trying to flash. I thought it failed because i didnt change my file system but i had no idea how to do that so i avoided it and tried to install a newer version of twrp to see if the rom would work with the updated version instead. When flashing the twrp img file, it asked where i wanted to install and i think i selected bootloader instead of boot cause there were only 2 options.
After than finished and i chose to restart in recovery, recovery never loaded. I was getting erecovery but that couldnt help me either. I was just stuck with no os and a phone stuck on the bootscreen. I tried to unbrick my phone by installing the update file for the international version firmware which i downloaded which was the only one not to fail after trying 2 others before it before realizing the error i was making. I read online that it would restore my phone back to ofw and that was great considering i had no os installed. Now, after the update, i think i reached like 100% then it went blank. I tried to wait a couple seconds to see if it was rebooting but nothing happened. tried all button combinations with and without the charger for varying lengths of time but no luck. I hear a sound when its connected to my laptop tho so idk if that matters. Its a bit frustrating right now and i have no clue how to fix this problem and i havent even had the phone for a long time. If someone. anyone can help me, id more than appreciate it
So far, nothing is responding to anything. No lights, no vibrations and i dont see anything when it conencts to my laptop, my laptop just makes the connected sound. I see Fastboot 2.0 detected but the srk tool cannot detect any emulators or devices :/ im so depressed at this point. More or less just bought the ****.
Sounds bad, try using the dload method and if that doesn't work you are ******.
What is the output of "fastboot devices"

not getting to the upgrade screen with dload, the phone restarts but nothing on screen. I can use fastboot only to flash and unlock bootloader, check specifications but thats it. Can i still use dload without any on screen response?

Fastboot doesnt flash certain img's such as xloader etc, no vendor img included inside the update but i doubt i'd be able to flash it anyway, but i flashed everything i was allowed to incl. cust, boot, recovery, system, cache, . Everything else is giving error: command not allowed. I've hit a brick wall so far til my battery drains or i take it to a repair shop which is i guess, last resort. Can't seem to find help anywhere on the internet, nothing returns anything to the screen.
Looks like a hard brick, take it to an official repair shop. But remember: unlocking the bootlader does NOT void the warranty.

adb only works while phone is booted into system so nothing wrong there. If you're in the bootloader menu where you see that the status of your device is unlocked then you're already in fastboot mode. Just flash twrp again and the sideload stock 8.1 beta boot image (you can probably find it on xda), sideload magisk too. Go into install and press flash image file and find the stock boot image and then go into install again and change to flash .zip and flash magisk. After that, reboot into system.
WOW thank you so much'

No problem. Thank you very much for the donation, that was really kind of you. Hey I'm sure you'll get the hang of it before android P drops. you did figure out what went wrong all by yourself so get a hold of the right boot.img and the rest is exactly as how you did it in the first place but flash the boot.img before magisk. Let me know if you want to give it a dive again.
I'm on 8.1 boot loader unlocked and ready to try to root again .Thanks for the help
This is the closest thread i could find to what is happening to my PH-1.
Like videodave1 I 'was' running the latest stock 8.1 and have my bootloader unlocked. In trying to root the phone I did this:
flash boot flash boot twrp.img
adb shell twrp sideload
adb sideload magisk.zip
All installations went well, but when trying to reboot from twrp it forced me to install the app. After that the phone went into boot loop.
* Note how I didn't sideloaded the Oreo 8.1 image before magisk.
By pressing all 3 buttons I can get the phone to reboot and releasing the volume up I can get to Fastboot. Just volume down and power doesn't work.
The problem now is that adb and fastboot no longer recognise the phone. adb devices just gives an empty list and fastboot only shows < waiting for device >
Trying to go into Recovery mode doesn't work either. Power off doesn't work and Restart bootloader, well, restarts the bootloader.
It might be relevant to mention that I'm running adb and fastboot from Terminal in a Mac and that this is my very first and frustrated attempt to root any phone.
For reference this is what the FastBoot Mode brings:
PRODUCT_NAME - Mata
VARIANT - OPENUS
BOOTLOADER VERSION - mata-aad8ac4
BASEBAND VERSION - 2.0.C4-M1.3.1
SECURE BOOT - yes
DEVICE STATE - unlocked
I might have to just resign myself to the ordinary land of unlocked full stock phones
Thanks very much

< waiting for any device >
How do I flash it from the FastBoot screen? BTW, going to Recovery mode just hangs at the Essential logo.
Thanks

Thanks for coming back to me. I really appreciate it.
I might be missing something hopefully obvious here. How can I flash twrp again if I my computer can't see the phone. With the USB phone plugged in and in the FastBoot screen I enter into Terminal:
fastboot flash boot twrp.img
and I get:
< waiting for any device >
How do I flash it from the FastBoot screen? BTW, going to Recovery mode just hangs at the Essential logo.

Thanks Arju. If you are referring to the FastBoot menu where you can use the up and down volume keys to select Start, Restart Bootloader, Recovery mode and Power off Yes, but not much else unfortunately.
If I select Recovery mode I don't go to the screen with the blue buttons from twrp.
Thanks

What you need to understand is that twrp will not stick after you flash it. This device does not have a recovery partition and that's why you replace the boot partition with twrp and while you're in twrp you need to flash the boot.img back and whatever mods on top of that such as kernel etc.. If you flash a rom then it will replace the twrp with the boot.img found in the rom zip.
So now we need the computer to recognize you device. Could you unplug the cable and change the usb port on you computer. connect your phone while you're in the bootloader menu where it says start on the top.
The use use fastboot command: fastboot devices
See if the computer recognizes you device.
I have been on a journey trying to go back to my T-Mobile OnePlus 6T back as my daily driver but the official updates killed the device for me. I have been successful in flashing it to the international version and now the device is on A9. I am trying to get it updated to A10 but in order do that (does not take OTA updates or can not flash within the updates app) I have to flash in recovery. Right now it is on stock recovery so I am trying to flash TWRP.
The problem is now that everytime I run the command " fastboot boot IMAGENAME.img" the phone restarts (as expected) and boots into fastboot but stays stuck in the Fastboot Mode screen.
I tried different TWRP images (older and the most current version per https://dl.twrp.me/fajita/ ) but I keep getting stuck in the Fastboot Mode screen. The last thing I was able to do without issues was unlock bootloader using fastboot.
I just need to be able to flash TWRP on the phone so I can still the final stock image so I can go back to using it as my DD.
EDIT: Disregard everything I fixed it. mods, please delete thread.
EDITR 2: Disregard that last edit lol Yeah I still need help. I am now tryingto flash twrp on a second 6T and the issue described above still applies.
You can try this version. Also try unplugging the USB after it reboots. You aren't getting any crash dump screen? So it should be working.

Tried your image and still same result. I am running following command
Code:
fastboot boot TWRP-3.6.1_11-OP6xT.img
The command window outputs the following
Code:
Sending 'boot.img' (34964 KB) OKAY [ 0.747s]
Booting OKAY [ 0.092s]
Finished. Total time: 0.860s
The phone then reboots into Fastboot Mode logo and stays stuck there. I even tried unplugging the USB after it reboots as well.
I even tried using the flash command instead of boot but no success.
How about fastboot boot recovery? Should be able to get into recovery somehow. Doing fastboot flash of twrp will mess up your boot partition but either way you still should be able to get into recovery somehow. There is the msm recovery tool you can use as last resort but it will relock your bootloader
Actually fastboot doesn't let you use boot recovery command I don't think. Only adb. But once you are in fastboot can't you choose to reboot recovery with volume keys?

When I am in fastboot mode, yes I can choose recovery but it takes me to the stock recovery. I do not have a option to flash any zip files there
Maybe you need a twrp for Android 9 since that's what you are on. But fastboot boot twrp should just take you there. Either have to find one that works or go msm route. Maybe windows not reading it correctly also. You using CMD or PowerShell?

I tried both CMD and PowerShell. I am going to try a A9 version of twrp
EDIT: I am using twrp-3.6.1_9-0-fajita.img (which I assume is for A9) and still get the same result. Even tried a different usb port.. not sure what i could be missing. I also did the instructions as advised straight from twrp's website.

I don't know bud. I guess msm tool is the way to go then
Curious did you have the twrp file in same folder as adb and fastboot?
