Opinions moving from iPad to SGN 10.1?

So I currently own:
iPad 2- love the fact its so fluid
G-Note 5.3- Slow and I find the s-pen is not accurate off by 1/8 on an inch but loved the idea.
SGIII- Traded my Note for a SGIII and love the speed.
Previously owned:
SG 10.1- Returned felt Gingerbread is too slow and laggy. Just doesn't have the smooth of iPad.
Moto Zoom 10.1- Returned for the above reason as well.
As you can see I WANT an Android tablet but frankly they just have been as fluid as IOS. So anyone coming from the iPad to the Note 10.1. Since I never had the retina display I think I can safely give it up but I want fluid. And I want the S-pen but I want it accurate and responsive like paper.
So thoughts and opinions.

Just go down to your local brick and mortar and play with one for an hour and decide for yourself. Or, if you're incapable of deciding for yourself then head down to the Apple retail store and the geniuses will happily tell you what to buy.

S Pen is very accurate (I haven't seen anyone complain about it being off a little) and very responsive.
It's as not fluid as an iPad, but should be fluid enough. I actually returned Asus Transformer Infinity before buying this one, and I can say that Note 10.1 is ten time more fluid than Transformer Infinity. It addition, with Jelly Bean (with Project Butter) update coming within this year it will be much better. I don't think you will feel like you need Jelly Bean though because it already works smoothly as is.
Coming from iPad 2, the screen will look amazing with higher resolution. However, if fluidity is your priority, iPad is probably the best choice. But I have a feeling that you will be happy with this device.

My wife was fed up with her iPad 2 (it was free, though, a business gift) . When I had my SGN10.1 she played around with it for 1hr , got in her car and went to buy her own SGN10.1 ....... :good:

Gingerbread??? Tab 10.1 was Honeycomb... That said it had a Tegra2, Tegras are notorious for being first on the market to bump up core count but horrendously poor performance per core, and oddly, some of the worst GPU performance which is odd considering that NVidia is a GPU company.
If you're happy with the I9300, you should be happy with the N80xx - Same resolution and exact same CPU/GPU.
In addition, once Jellybean hits, UI performance should be significantly improved... Assuming Samsung doesn't dork it up. Might want to look at how the I9300 Jellybean leak is performing.

Just return my Asus TF700 and bought my second Note(first one went to U of Iowa with my daughter) and couldn't be happier.

This is not a hard choice. The iPad is a very different device if your into pen. If the question is about the pen being solid, it's solid.
Feel secure that your getting good pen from this.

I came from the iPad. I've been trying to switch to Android for over a year. Of the half dozen Android tablets I've tried, the Note 10.1 is my switching device. Don't get me wrong, I'm keeping the iPad mostly because my daughter uses it for some games and secondly because there are some games I like that Android doesn't have (Kingdom Rush!).
So yeah, my retina iPad has been reduced to sloppy seconds.

I just sold my (New) iPad and i want to switch to an Android tab, what i don't like about the Note 10.1 is the low resolution it dould of made my choice easier if it had a full HD screen, now i'm torn between the Infinity and the Note 10.1 is de res really bad on the Note in comparision with the Infinity or New iPad?

I don't notice the reduced resolution at all - and as others have pointed out, excessive resolution causes problems. UI performance on Infinity, battery performance (the new iPad requires around 50% more battery capacity to achieve the same runtime) for iPad. This means the new iPad takes longer to charge and is heavier.

Note 10.1 - proper systems engineering, acknowledging that the benefits of a higher resolution display beyond 1280x800 (or was it 720?) are far less than the costs (need for much higher GPU fill rates, which means either worse framerates or more battery consumption).

I had the iPad1 the day it came out, and the iPad2 when it came out. The only reason I bought either tablet was that I wanted to use it for taking notes (without needing pen and paper) and reading PDF's (in a more natural way than on a laptop), and they only did one of those things. I sold my iPad2 a few months ago, and have just now picked up the Note 10.1. Me like!
The build quality is a little lower than I've been used to with the iPad, but feels acceptable in the hand.
The note-taking software is a little rough around the edges, as if Samsung doesn't realize they can tap into a HUGE education market with it.
In terms of taking notes in class, it's everything I ever hoped for -- the digitizer is very accurate, super rarely messes up.
Lack of high-res screen is disappointing, but it still looks a lot better than my iPad ever did!
The whole point of the Note 10.1 is taking notes and drawing. Hopefully Samsung will realize this at some point and polish up the rough edges and market it for education, ie. taking notes in class, but 'til then it's a fine tablet as is.

Thanks for your reply, i will try to go to the store this week and test both of them and i will leave with one of them.
From what i have read, i think these are the main differences between the two.
Note 10.1
Likes- DAC, Speakers orientation, CPU/GPU/RAM, Design, S-Pen.
Dislikes- Screen resolution (I will try this at the store with websites and videos)
TF700 Infinity
Likes- Full HD res, Tegra 3 Gaming, Design, Dock, Stock Android.
Dislikes- Laggy performance/ I/O performance, Not so loud mono speaker with bad orientation, Build quality issues.

With regards to the Screen resolution, I am very happy with it, maybe there are only a few users who genuinely dislike the display and others are just repeating what they have heard from other reviews.
Not sure if you will be fully able to test both machines in store for finding defects etc unless they are blatantly obvious as I have been using an Asus TF101 prior to the note and the defects usually show days/months later on the machines. I had to RMA my Asus once during its warranty period but I collected the faults over time and had them repaired in one visit, one speaker stopped working, battery drained very quickly and when it stopped charging I had to send it back.
I have not owned a Samsung tablet but have owned a few of their phones and currently own the phone version of the Note which I also love however it has not always been good. Previously owned their first galaxy S phone and had nothing but problems with it and the GPS issue was never really resolved on the phone which was poor even after updates. Samsung tend to release too many products too soon after the launch of a new product making the previous model obsolete and support/updates used to be very slow. Based on the above issues I moved back to HTC phones and am back now again to Samsung but this time it seems that they are focusing on quality and their latest product, the Note 10.1 really does seem to tick all the right boxes for for now....

I know some people yell about specs that they only heard about without knowing what it adds, but it is not in my case, i usually browse a lot and i also hate seeing big pixels like for example on the iPad 2, this is what i liked about the New iPad the browsing experience was quitte good (with Chrome) and i could not see any pixels in normal use. That is why it will be the most important for me on a tablet.
I've had a lot of experience with Samsung and HTC in the past and it was the same as you HTC was a master, but if the Note 10.1 resembles the S3 that i own now than it will be the tab to beat. Samsung improved a lot since the Galaxy S in terms of software implementation and support at least this is what i experience now on my S3.

The only time you will notice the resolution difference with the Note is if you are trying to read really tiny text. Othewise this screen looks totally amazing.
That being said it all comes down to the s-pen. If you want a pen get the Note, if not get the ipad.

It's got the home button from the phone though. That was one of the things that people hated about the Note 2 compared to the Note 1: having to push a mechanical button instead of a capacitive home button meant having to change to a finger push instead of a stylus poke.

The design, at least to me, is kind of stupid. Android on a tablet doesn't do well in portrait and widgets end up squished to fit. Using the Note 8 in landscape is going to be challenging because of the button placement and types of buttons Samsung decided to use. And having what appears to be a single front-facing speaker is a step back from the Note 10.1. It's just my opinion but having less than a 10" tablet kind of defeats the purpose especially with S Note and multiview. I'm sure it'll sell well though.
I just hope we get some of the new features like Awesome Note (Samsung has a one year Android exclusive) and the addition of TV Discovery to Peal to pull in Netflix and Hulu content.

I waited for Note 8.0 thinking it would be just like Note 10.1 but smaller. But it is more like a bigger version of Note 2 but with poorer camera. Meh.
Samsung - this is an enlarged phone, not a proper tablet.

I don't have a Note 10.1, since I really don't want to drop 400-500 on a tablet anytime soon as I did with the Thinkpad Tablet, and that was a huge mistake. As far as I've seen, this tablet is a lot better, but I think the price point of this 8.0 tablet might be appealing. We'll see, I guess.
Anyone think a second version of the 10.1 tablet is due as well, in the near future at least?

im still thinking if this will be a good backup phone from the Note 10.1 or i might settle for the Nexus 4. but ever since the rumors about the Note 8 came out, i am so into it.
we will see when it is out in stores.

Well the Note 8.0 solves THE big knock on the Note 10.1 - lousy PPI. Because of the smaller form factor the PPI goes up by almost 50 points. That's enough to make a real difference. Also thumb typing in portrait will be much more comfortable. It will also have a large enough screen to handwrite in portrait (unlike the Note 2).
One side benefit of this is that the Note 10.1 will get cheaper. BestBuy has it for $449 today. First time I've seen it on sale there.
Last point. Note 10.1 will now get better software.
I expect the Note 8.0 to be wildly popular and honestly the tablet the Note 10.1 was meant to be.

MWC is on so keep your favorite tech sites bookmarked and check them frequently for all the mobile news out of Spain this week. 7-inch tablets will be big this year. Today, Engadget is reporting on 3 new 7-inchers being shown at MWC--1 by HP that will be priced at $169 USD (not breathtaking specs on it) and 2 by Lenovo. It will be interesting to see if a 3G international version of the note 8 with dialing capabilities will be announced at the official unveiling at MWC. As many have noted, the speaker placement looks similar to the note 2, leading to speculation that some models might have phone capabilities.

I don't see a point why a Note 10.1 user should consider buying this tablet. Of course, dpi is lousy and i won't deny it, it just sucks. But that's one point - the Note 10.1 is a full-fledged android tablet. Landscape oriented, great software, enough power to maintain the upcoming years and some great features like stereo frontfacing speakers.
The Note 8.0 is a LOT more specified and in my opinion it wants to appeal a bit more professional users than most who bought the Note 10.1. I bought it for studying, it'll do a great job then. But i also wanted a multimedia tablet i can use at home, i think the Note 8.0 will have difficulties in that. It's too much different from standard android tablets.

The Wi-Fi version won't and the U.S. and Canada won't be offered a 3G version. And probably in the countries that offer both more than half sold will be Wi-Fi only because people don’t want to have to buy 3G data. The N8000's a phone too but still survives without looking like a giant Note II including hard and soft buttons that are difficult to use in landscape and a single speaker. Do you honestly see anyone with a Note 8 holding it to their ear for phone calls?

It's just the classic comparison of a 7/8" tablet vs. a 10" tablet. It's no different than comparing the N7 and N10; they are meant for two different market segments. The Note 8's going after the iPad Mini, not the Note 10.1. I agree about the better PPI between the Note 8 and 10 but because of the extra screen real estate you'd typically hold the Note 10 further away minimizing the impact. 10" high-end Android tablets have never sold particularly well because their price points are too close to the iPad and with that the masses tend to go for the original. If I was shopping for a tablet today I'd still buy the Note 10.1 in spite of its PPI because of its features. I like that it's designed to be used in landscape and the extra display space makes productivity stuff tons easier than working with a 7/8" tablet. But, to your point, based on size, price, and volume in the 7/8" space the Note 8 will easily outsell the Note 10.1. And I don't think Samsung cares one way or the other. The only thing I'll give my Note 10.1 up for is a Note the same size or larger with a FHD display. Purely my personal opinion of course.

Its pretty much the same tablet. Ill wait another year or atleast until tech advances enough to justify dropping another 500+ for a tablet. And when that happens, it will probably be a nexus :laugh:

I also find the resolution on the Samsung devices pretty poor :crying: I wish Samsung would bump them up!

higher dpi sounds great, just remember it means more work for the battery and cpu, I believe the wacom digitizer and resolution need to match also. personally I cannot sacrifice screen real estate, annotating blue prints requires a large screen for me. would love something in the 11.6 range. but I do believe they have different audiences, (I never believe in a one size fits all approach) probably get the little lady one, call it the " lady note"

I only want one cuz it's sexy. That and I'm a sucker for ads lol.
Realistically this could never replace my Note 10.1.

My s4 is faster. Higher res screen etc. But when it comes to browsing video etc theres no substitute for real estate.

Have to totally agree as well. Was about to get the Nexus 10 but I am really happy to get the Note 10.1. And the screen size and quality is more than fine for me...
This is the first time i have really used a tablet for my various hobbies. The Spen magic is great as well.
I just wish we get the Android updates for multiuser feature and bluetooth 4 LE support

I completely ignored the reviews about the note 10.1, so many complaints about the screen being poor etc, what a load of tosh that is, there's bugger all wrong with it imo. I picked the note 10.1 over the nexus 10 and I don't regret that decision one bit!

Snagged mine on eBay for £204 about 3 months ago, it's everything I need in a tablet.... I came from the tab 7.7 with the amoled screen which was lovely but still prefer the note 10.1 as more horsepower and bigger screen = happy gingerdude + with my note 2 gives me everything on the go.
To those who say screen is poor, try it for yourself is more than ok.

Couldn't agree more... just got my Note 10.1 a few weeks back - had been debating upgrading my original Tab 10.1 for a N10. I'm so happy I didn't - not sure where most of the bad reviews come from: screen is fantastic, the device is super-responsive, feels great in the hand and well-built, expandable memory (running a 64GB card in my 32GB Note = all the space I could ask for) - and for someone that uses his tablet like a notebook, the pen is fantastic to work with... Highly recommended. :victory:

What would make this Tablet permanently on my person, is if it could Seperate into 2, for portability. The 2nd half of the screen could serve as a giant battery, or the 2 halves could have Bluetooth link to each other, so you could do a lot of new things tablets can't do, for (a light-hearted) example , PORTABLE BATTLESHIP GAME SET! XD lol. Just think how creative Samsung could be, once they make those flexible displays commercially available. Also, when Google Glass becomes reasonably priced (I don't think King Midas could even afford it right now), I think some really awesome usage integration between one's glasses, computer, smartphone, and tablet, is inevitably going to be one of the driving catylsts in how commercially available tech will evolve/unfold.

About the screen: the only reason Samsung didn't make it on Par with competitors, is because they couldn't find any that could work well with the specialized Wacom digitizer (which is what makes the s-pen superior to a magic wand XD), while also being cost effective. It's a tradeoff that anyone who goes this tablet a fair try, wouldn't care less about. Friggin' Apple extremists think the iPad screen makes photos look better than looking at something in person with your own eyes. Lol.

Opposite for me. I got my S4 and now I use my tablet less. It's not because it's a bad tablet, it's just that it's easier to whip out the phone and browse sometimes. I use my tablet for lots of other important things though so it makes up for that..

i sold my gn10.1 a few months back to get the ativ 500t and 700t. there isn't a day that goes by that i don't miss it. i've almost bit the bullet a few times and gotten a refurb for $300 (i've seen the refurb 32 for ~$350). i really wanna wait to see if they come out with a bigger screen, but i really miss my gn10.1. i missed it so bad that i bought a gn8 to fill the gap that will be left after i sell my nook hd+.
it was the greatest tablet i've owned and thought i'd finally found one that i'd keep for more than a year. windows is great since i can play just about any format and have an alternate selection of games (can't say better b/c that's subjective) and i love the bigger screen. i do hate that windows desktop isn't very finger friendly and that modern ui sucks so badly.
maybe i'll cave it and get another. hopefully i can tame the desire and wait a few months to see how much the ativ q will be or how big the new galaxy note tablets will be.

I just got a Galaxy S4 about a week and a half ago. I find myself using both my Note 10.1 and S4 about equally but for different things, for productivity apps, such as the S-pen apps and office apps, the real estate of the 10.1 can't be beat. for speed, fast browsing and social apps I lean toward the S4. One note though, the S4 just came out with an update that lets you move apps to SDcard, which the 10.1 does not have (hopefully it will come in a future update), however this update locks the bootloaders so that the S4 then cannot be rooted (as of yet!).

Same here. Galaxy Note and S4. In many ways they compliment each other. S-notes automatically show up on S-memo (albeit read only) and reverse also. S4 is always there when Note is not practical. Note wins for meetings. S4 wins waiting for the airplane door to close, and riding in the car.
I even got the small point stylus (ikross brand) designed for the S4 and it works nicely.

Note 3 + Note 10.1 (2014) or S4 + Note 8.0

I had posted this in the wrong forum so I moved it here.
Not sure what I want to do here. I currently have a Galaxy S3 and a Tab 7.7. I am somewhat happy with the setup, but I have an upgrade coming and know I want to have a member of the Note family. I run my own HVAC company and I am out on the jobsite doing a lot of estimates during the week. I have been wanting to streamline more of my jobsite notes from a tablet to my laptop/desktop. I was hoping for Tab 7.7 to help with a lot of that but it has fallen short of being easy enough to use. I find myself still taking notes on paper and converting to my computer once I get home. The Tab has been regulated to more of toy (which has been great) instead of a useful tool.
I really like the form factor of the 7.7 though. I use it for a Kindle app to do reading, although only at night. I have an older Kindle Touch which is great during the day but at night or in low light I find myself reach for my 7.7 more. I am thinking about getting the new Kindle Paperwhite depending on what I upgrade to.
I really like the form factor of the Note 8.0, but compared to the 2014 10.1 it is seriously lacking specs. The positive on this, is I could probably pick one up for half the cost of the 10.1. Plus I feel that if I get the Note 3 there isn't going to be much of a difference between both devices. I am also a bit apprehensive about having such a large phone.
I know I am all over the board here, but let me know what you think.

If money isn't an object, the 10.1 2014 edition and the Note 3. - Both are poweful beasts with great battery life.

Size of Note 3 is relative, it seems big at first, but now after couple months my old GS3 seems small, but not that much of a difference after all. taking notes with s-pen is much easier than I expected and personally I use it more than I thought I will. So I would go with Note3, but this is Note 3 forum, most people here already made the decision, so it may be one sided view after all. Personally I have no regrets whatsoever and probably won't even look at another phone until Note 4 comes out and even then it would have to really bring something really new to the table. As far as tablets go, 8" is already too big to carry around at all times IMO, but just for home use bigger screen would be better.

Plus I feel that if I get the Note 3 there isn't going to be much of a difference between both devices. I am also a bit apprehensive about having such a large phone.

I think there is a new Note coming very soon in the 8''-8.8'' range. That being said if you can handle the Note 3 as a phone (which is mostly a matter of having big hands/fingers and large pockets) you might be more tempted by the 10'' or even the new 12'' Note Pro for the extra space.
I have also heard of people using a Note 8 as a phone - together with the very impressive special Bluetooth SPen (which not only acts as a BT headset but also is MUCH easier to hold for notes/drawings).

As for me posting this in the Note 3 forum. I understand that it will have a slight biased. I am leaning more towards the Note 3 anyways. I have seen and held one a few times, and while it feels huge I am sure I will get used to it. I used to think my S3 was big.
I was more concerned with figuring out which tablet to pair it with. I know some people say that the Note 3 eliminates the need for tablet but I still feel the need for one. I like having one to mess around with at home and to watch media on. I also use it on the jobsite to show off equipment and pictures of completed jobs. It is easier to show that off on a tablet instead of a large phone. I have just always been turned off by the larger tablets. They always seemed to bulky and heavy and I never liked laying in bed with one.

I have the Galaxy Note 3 paired with the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 and I really enjoy it. However, I wonder if the S Pen function may be a little redundant on the Galaxy Note 3 if you have both note devices. I do still jot down things quickly on my phone but I use my tablet more heavily. I personally feel like the 8.0 would be too similar to the size of my phone but I guess it's personal preference. I got the 10.1 edition because I want it to be able to replace my laptop when I'm away from home, carrying my laptop is far, far too bulky. Especially since the fan in my laptop has gone so I'd have to carry my cooler too just to stop my laptop from overheating and turning off. With my tablet I also have a bluetooth keyboard and I just find I can position myself more comfortably when typing. As the others have said, the next gen of the 8.0 line up will most likely be coming out soonish so hopefully you will get the nice HD resolution too. You may also want to consider the S5 that's coming out this year. Perfectly up to you, but I feel my combination works well for me

No brainer...N3 & 10.1.14 all the way. Perfect couple, like Romeo & Juliet or Bony & Clyde :highfive:

New Tablet

Just got my Note Pro and this thing is huge. Formerly, I have owned the Note 10.1 and Note 10.1 2014 edition. I also use a Note 4. I have looked at other tablet, but I'm kinda hooked on the multiwindow and and s-pan handwriting. It is a fast way for me to take notes. I'm a preacher and use my tablet for sermon prep and during sermons, so the additional screen real estate is a boost for me. Look forward to playing with this things. I have already rooted and installed a custom ROM (better speed and battery life). Look forward to everything I can learn on this forum.

Got mine on Friday. Rooted and attempted to debloat myself.
Loving the tablet even though it's not up to date (not even 4.4.4 lol). Nova launcher plus a few xposed mods filled the void though.
Kinda sucks the community isn't as active due to slow update rollout but I look forward to trying out some of the active developed ROMs for the P900.

I don't know if I'm allowed to mention the ROM, but a well-known and respected developer has a customer ROM for the Note Pro that I'm running now and finding that I gained some performance and battery life, as well as what seems like unlimited customization (especially when combined with xposed).

I love mine too. Give inkredible a try, I think its great. Also lecture notes might be useful for you.

Noticed you're a preacher... might want to try out MySword, to which there are plenty of freebie commentaries and even a few extra bible versions floating about.
I got my 12.2 the day before Lollipop was released. An adventure (not good) involving the Logitech keyboard ensued, but since I'd just bought that as well I was able to send it back and buy the less flashy but perhaps even better service-wise Samsung keyboard -- and for just a bit over 30 bucks on Ebay. Love this baby. Stuck a 128g microsd in it with over 10,000 books of mine -- tons of Christian teaching and theology of every variety along with an even bigger mystery book collection.
The word processor on this thing is perfect for my use. A laptop that's Android. A tablet that's... well, hugely Android. The samsung mouse I ordered should be here soon, and then I guess we're just about there. Hehehehe...
As a long-time believer in root, root, root, I have done that as well, which allowed me to ditch some of the sillier ad-ons but keep the basic Samsung s-pen and other niceties. Quite happy.

Right now I"m using LOGOS Bible software (which I really like). I have the very basic package, but that includes a lot. While I was waiting for mine to arrive, I used a paper Bible at church and got laughed at because for years no one has seen me use one! All of my sermons and teaching notes are on my tablet. I don't use a keyboard. I have gotten very good using the handwriting (I use an app called Stylus Beta because it takes up less screen real estate than the Samsung keyboard). I also use a full sized stylus for comfort.

I've been a fan of the note series from the original, the s-pen and multi-windows have always added the functionality I've needed. I upgraded from the Note 10.1 about a year ago, and I've gotta say the increased pixel density and screen size make this the perfect tab for me. It is big, it is heavy, but that screen real estate makes it the perfect tab for professionals, or those wanting to get maximum productivity from their tab. I also have a Tab S 8.4, it's perfect for reading books or light gaming, but for anything else I find myself reaching for my Note Pro. I've never had a issue with performance, be it on a stock ROM or custom, the octa-core CPU and 3 GB of RAM still power through all the task I throw at it, the GPU is getting a little dated compared to some newer offerings, but runs everything I need it to at a smooth frame rate. Overall, best tab I've ever owned, keep it up Samsung! (and please give us some stock theme options, touchwiz is still damn ugly! albeit slightly improved in Lollipop)

No problem you mentioning the ROM you run, especially if you point out the benefits and or bugs. I was running hyperdrive from the get-go, nice ROM, lots of customization options and performance tweaks. Could not help flashing a stock Lollipop ROM a month or so ago, very happy with it. Some have experienced battery drain issues, but I've not had this problem. Now if we could get a port of Remix OS, I could see great potential for the Note Pro as a surface replacement, especially now Microsoft have released Office for Android:good:

Hey... I have had my note pro stolen this evening from my car..... I really loved the tablet after having it for a year, I used it a massive amount... It is not insured I am afraid, I am replacing it with a pixel c but do feel I will be making the wrong choice.. The note series hasn't been improved upon over the last 18 months.. I never updated to 5.1.1 as the update on my note 3 did break things..
Any thoughts on my choices??

I wouldn't get a pixel C until multiwindow or split window shows up, and then still I am not sure I could scale down to a 10 inch device. I have seen the LTE models of the Note on Ebay for as low as 300.
Also hopefully you went into your google account under Sign-in and Security, then recently used devices and remove your account from the Note Pro you had stolen. That won't stop them from getting whats on the device but better than nothing. Bummer about the theft.

I do not suggest purchasing the Pixel C if your original Note's use case was for productivity. Considering the C lacks multi-window support and a native stylus

Also the Pixel-C has *no* micro-sd slot. Deal breaker for me. Nifty machine looks-wise, though. 2 to 3 times as expensive as buying another Samsung 12.2 Note from ebay or amazon....
