Downgraded to MM via TWRP backup, need to upgrade with root. - Moto G4 Plus Questions & Answers

Here is my story,
I recently updated my moto g4 plus XT1643 Indian version to android 7. Then i tried to root with some guide from google, it softbricked my device. Fortunately i had a MM nandroid backup, i backed up and everything is alright.
I tried to upgrade to android N again, but i got an error "Bootloader preflash error" and "Remote failure" during same course of locking my bootloader and setting up system as default. Please help, how can i upgrade again to android 7?

Reinstall the original stock rom for your device again, not with a TWRP nandroid backup, but, using fastboot! After that, preform a regular OTA update, just to be sure you're on the latest Marshmallow.
Then flash the Nougat update using STOCK recovery!
If you want to root again, follow this guide carefully!

Hi, i tried this method and upgraded to Nougat successfully, later i tried to root and soft bricked the device and recovered MarshMallow from TWRP. Now, this upgrade method is not working, that's the problem.

Not able to flash anything with fastboot, "Bootloader downgrade error"

Got everything normal,
Flashed boot and system files, omitted bootloader, gpt.bin and recovery. Later flashed recovery and android N update, everything okay now, thanks everyone.

Once upgraded, the N Bootloader cannot be downgraded to MM, it was somewhere in those threads.

Nice.
Quick question, did any of you on XT-1640 manage to safely root your phone?
You know, without losing wi-fi, data etc.? Which method did you use.

I did, got no problems so far. But you will lose all data when unlocking the bootloader, if its already unlocked then rooting isn't going to wipe your data. I also installed xposed and got no problems with it

Looks like your trying to downgrade firmware there and from what I'm aware you can't downgrade certain sections like bootloader etc. What is it you're trying to achieve?

I was just trying to flash the stock rom. Had some glitches in my phone. While I was trying to flash via adb, couple of steps failed and then I was not able to boot my phone back.
Im sure that I'm using the latest version of ROM. However, it's the one before the latest security patch. However, the boot image and recovery image should remain the same.
Here's the version that I'm trying to flash.
XT1641-XT1643_6.0.1_MPJ24.139-13.1_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_CFC
No matter what I do now, I just cannot get my phone to boot in recovery mode or just boot normally.

Please read the post carefully before typing in any stupid commands that can screw up your phone.
Follow instructions EXACTLY as mentioned in this post.
The reason you are getting a “security downgrade” error is because you are trying to downgrade your bootloader, or GPT partitions. You cannot do that on the device.

Didn't you make backup...? First thing one should do is it....
You cannot flash official zip either soak or final by TWRP, you need stock recoveryfor that...
Now you can only do is flash stock via fastboot method (but you updated to soak it is not preferable)
Try this:
download any custom ROM from development, and load it to memory card, and flash it....

Since you haven't made backup, you have to go with fastboot flashing... As you updated soak your bootloader is now updated with it, don't downgrade it.... You will see gpt and downgrade errors while flashing... I can't say anything more about it, i didn't try that.....
You can follow guides available, see in guide section...

April Security Update

Just switched on my Moto G 2015 (US Retail, XT1540 2GB) for the first time in a week or two and got an update notification...
April 1 2017 security update, Build Number MPIS24.65-25.1-19 and System Version 24.221.19.osprey_retus_2gb.retus.en.US.retus
Is this news to people, or am I just way behind?
I have the same model, just did check system for updates and the update notification popped up. No notification before checking.

But you have something different than a 1540. I believe 1540 was the last to get the January update, while there are other models with 6.01 which the 1540 most likely will never get.
I've never got an update.
Just got mine today, 6/26/17. Also have an XT1540.
So I followed the same instructions here as I did for the last security update to a rooted device. It worked perfectly with the exception of the unlocked boot loader warning. The dark logo I used survived the January security system update, but was lost with this update.

If you are on stock ROM, unrooted, and stock recovery, you should be able to take the OTA upgrade with no issue regardless if your bootloader is locked or not.. I had to restore my unrooted stock ROM prior to accepting the OTA update. Than using TWRP, I restored the data partition from my last saved rooted ROM.

I would not proceed if TWRP is installed. You need the stock recovery installed for the OTA upgrade successfully install. Once stock recovery is installed, you can boot into TWRP and complete all actions as if TWRP was installed. I never installed TWRP.

That is correct. I still have stock recovery installed, but I use fastboot commands to boot into TWRP recovery.
After connecting the phone to the usb, using Linux, I do the following commands from the same directory where my TWRP img file is located.
Code:
./adb reboot bootloader
sudo ./fastboot boot twrp-osprey-3.1.0-r1.img
This loads TWRP in your phone but does not install it.
From windows I think the commands basically the same without the "./"

I just did it on mine the other day. I didn't realize that having an unlocked bootloader didn't automatically mean fastboot flashing would work, so I upgraded to 20m before I started the unlock and root process.
Starting from 20m, I:
1. Downgraded to 20l using LG UP + Uppercut from Autoprimes thread
2. Booted into android and let it do its thing.
3. I then used Uppercut to downgrade to 20a.
4. After I was on 20a, I had issues in android with items crashing, but no big deal... I was now able to use autorecowvery to install twrp.
5. Once I had twrp, I flashed the complete 20l zip from Autoprimes thread to get back to 20l, wiped data to get rid of the crashing issues, made sure I deleted the "recovery-fromboot.p" file, and then flashed magisk also.
6. Rebooted into a rooted 20l rom and continued on.
I will try then report back, thanks.

Those steps are right to perform the downgrade. If someone is interested in testing the new firmware from tmobile (h83020M), I have created a beta version of my Nimax Rom which has root, xposed and is compatible with asgard kernel.

I now have H830 20m update zips Here.
I have completely stock Tmobile LG G5 with H83020M. I've avoided letting H83020N install so I can preserve the possibility of rootingby rollling back to 20A.
It's been officially sim-unlocked by Tmobile and I use it with ATT, and that's my question, will I lose that during rollback ? Since the imei is in Tmobile's database now I hope it wouldn't ?

No,u wont lose sim-unlocked status.

MOTO G5 PLUS blank flash did not worked and fell into bootloop.

The whole story of my hard brick (Do note I'm a noob in this rooting business)-
1. My device was rooted with magisk for a long time but uninstalling magisk wasn't unrooting my phone(which it should!). I decide to unroot the device.
2. I flash stock rom which was the latest version (as per me) but the flash didn't work, went into soft brick. Recovered when I flashed the original stock ROM which was the one I got out of the box.
3. EVERYTHING WAS FINE. The phone was recovered and worked perfectly fine.
4. I was prompted with a OTA update (FINALLY!) but lo and behold my phone went into hard brick. No response, no recovery mode nothing.
5. I saw some blank flash tutorial from some xda forum (I seriously don't remember which).
6. Now the phone has a continous bootloop of message "Bootloader unlocked". My device is recognised in the laptop as 'fastboot potter S'. And I can get to fastboot Flash mode but I seem to not be able to flash anything after this.
7. Every attempt is failed somewhere or the other.

You have most probably downgraded your bootloader, the firmware you flashed was presumably newer than the OTA you applied. It's better to not take OTA updates after a firmware flash out of this reason, better to take the last and latest firmware ( 8.1.0_OPS28.85-17-6-2).
As far as I know a blankflash file for potter Oreo has never been leaked.

Sounds like a hardbrick. If you don't find a working blankflash file you have a paperweight now, sorry to say that.
I don't know anything more you could do except flashing latest stock or flashing some custom ROM.
