TWRP - What to backup? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Coming from many years with Samsung phones, I have only had to backup system, data and cache to save a rom setup. On the 6 P there are a lot of options. I'm on WEDA Audiophile rom but want to make a backup to try a different one. What do I need to select in TWRP to save everything needed to go back to this rom?
Thanks for any advice, Jack

Data, System, Boot, Vendor should do the trick.

Make a backup of your EFS first and keep it safe in case. Make sure you are using the latest TWRP (3.0.2-3) to avoid problems. Backup system, boot and data. You don't actually need the vendor.

Latest version of TWRP is 3.0.2-2, no? This is like the 3rd or 4th time I've seen "3.0.2-3" mentioned, but per the official TWRP site and everywhere I've seen, 3.0.2-2 is the latest....so just figured I'd clarify

I am on Tapatalk so hard to grab a URL. Search for 3.0.2-3 on XDA, should be in the TWRP fatal flaw thread. Unofficial but published by one of the devs, rid of the bugs of -1 & -2.
Edit: Here you go ... https://idlekernel.com/twrp/nexus/ (Angler version of course)

Hi Guys,
Anyone successfully got rid of this? i've been running Catacalysm with elementalx with no issues. But suddenly i wanted to try layers and one of the layer i tried made me to loop at colorful dots screen that turn into android. But it never turned to android and didn't boot.
i tried to restore nandroid, flash catacalysm again etc., but nothing worked. Finally i had to flash all the factory image (from bootloader to vendor) again. then restored the latest data nandroid. i had my finger print set and following http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928 i removed locksettings.db file to successfully get in the system.
however, on every restart i get this error message that my phone has an internal problem and manufacturer to be contacted. I am afraid to flash the nexus 9 fix, as someone reported that its spoiling his touch screen.
Try flashing the vendor img only in fastboot and see if that removes the error message.

Thanks! Easy fix!
Flashing the vendor img didn't work for me.
Is there any other way to do it or do I have to wipe it all and start over?
So, I see that it's based on the build number MMB29X but that's a Nexus 6 build. I have a Nexus 5x. If I flash that vendor image, will it work or mess things up? I've never had to do that before so I'm sort of lost... I'm positive that I downloaded the right build from the CM site. Thanks in advance for the help.

Do not flash that nexus 6 image!! Do not flash or install any zip or image that is not expressly for your phone!!
This is the forum for the Nexus 6p. You will have better luck finding the answer to you question somewhere here (Nexus 5x forum). If you have installed an image or zip of any type from anywhere other than that forum (or official google downloads) you are probably going to have a bad day. Good luck.
I didn't even notice.

No worries, mate! I have found solutions to problems in forums that were not for my phone. Just pay attention to where you post you questions. The fact that you are using google first puts you years ahead of some people I've seen posting. Definitely no reason to apologize twice. :highfive:
Found the fix in the form of a ZIP in Nexus 9 forum.
Ha.
Thanks, again!
Can anybody verify that this works for the 6p before I flash a zip and Jack my phone up any further? Lol
How do I find the right vendor img for my nexus 6p?

With a file browser, head to /System/build.prop and look for this line "ro.build.description" and your system software should be listed after the Android version. I believe this is also listed in Settings/About Phone. You can view which Vendor you have installed in /Vendor/build.prop. Make sure both match up each month when you update.

What options to select n TWRP to make a nandroid b4 I root

Just got my new Nexus 6P 2 days ago . Came from the HTC M9 Developer Edition I've only had HTC M series since the One X so alot of the things I'm reading is a little different.
I'm on MHC19i Stock with TWRP 3.0.0.1
I want to make a nandroid backup b4 i root but not sure if I need to select Vender or Vender IMG in Recovery ??
And from reading I need to disable security fingerprint/pin b4 I make a backup.
Thanks again and man I think I made the right decision to go with this 6P over the New M10

Backing up with flashfire?

So I've been rooting and all that since the Samsung epic and I'm very competent when it comes to these things, but given this is the first phone I've ever had with a fully locked bootloader and no custom recovery, I have a few questions regarding using flashfire as a means of backing up my Rom. I'm on stock, and already rooted, my questions are:
1. Are all of the backup functions (esn, system, data, etc.) working properly for this device? I'd really like a full backup including esn for peace of mind because I intend to try echoe today.
2. What's the process to restore said backup? I'm assuming it saves to my external sd, and I just restore to stock, root, and restore the backup after I reinstall flashfire? Just want to be sure because I know if I screw something up with flashfire I can brick this thing.
It's all customizable. I use the normal backup and check Efs also. It will prompt you as to where you want to save your backup and what you want to back up. When restoring, it shows your backups and you select and restore. Yes all functions work properly

Thank you, exactly what I needed, one more question, have you tried backing up to adb? I see the option there and that would be the preferred method as it wouldn't take up space on my device and I'll still have it when I need it.

Stuck on TWRP after factory reset. Pls help

Hello my fellow v20 users. I'm in dire need of you wisdom and guidance. Today I was getting ready to hand my phone to my brother so I did a factory reset. My phone is a Sprint V20 rooted and bootloader unlocked with the dirty Santa method and I had installed the us996 deoxed ROM on it.
Everything was working perfectly and I enjoyed the phone very much. However after I did the factory reset in TWRP (I did the plain swipe to clear reset) the phone just rebooted into TWRP again and again and no matter what I do. I already have tried reinstalling the same us996 deoxed ROM I was using to no avail, I have tried another ROM and the same result.
I tried following some advice which I found on the forum that said to wipe the phone in a certain order and then install the ROM and then pull the battery and the same result it boots into TWRP. At one point I even tried flashing a different TWRP and I lost the ability to boot into recovery wahtsoever! However flashing the TWRP I was using before that granted the ability to get back into the recovery but now I'm back at square one. No matter what I do the phone always boots into TWRP. I really am at a loss here and don't know what else to try or do. If someone could please help me I would really appreciate it. I can also let someone remote connections to my PC if that would help. Any help would be really appreciated.
Edit (SOLVED!) Many many thanks to user Jinkerz9430 for all his help and the solution to my problem. He will post the solution for other people to use.

But there are several threads that have been created for the exact same situation. And some of them have the answer you are looking for. One of them is the method i have used every time to get out of the loop (which rarely happens to me). Have you looked inside those threads? They are inside the Q&A section or the discussion section.

How To Root easily without any kind of Tools and installing OTAs - beginner's Guide.

Hello,
my aim here is to sort out things easily for beginner's, hence I made a detailed video on How To Root and Unlock Bootloader using TWRP and Magisk with the help of ADB drivers and Magisk.
which is,
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot flash recovery xxx.img
flash the TWRP and Magisk, you have a rooted device.
I have made a detailed Video, check it out,
Links are provided in the description and I will be updating it.
TWRP Credits to @eng.stk
Magisk Credits to @topjohnwu
while updating your ROM,
Flash the FULL ROM ZIP
Wipe Dalvik Cache and Cache
Flash Masgik
to be on the safer side, reboot.
backup stock kernel
flash the custom kernel
you will continue to get the OTAs but in FULL ZIPs, not in Incremental Updates.

Uh, ADB and Fastboot are tools. I'm betting more than 3/4 of first time flashers have most of their problems with drivers for ADB and Fastboot.

Nice video. Perhaps the phone portions could zoom in a little more, but you mention in the video links but I didn't see them. It would be helpful in your first post to have the links to adb/fb, recommended twrp, and magisk. That will save N00b from hunting around for the drivers and packages. Also when I make videos I tend to stay away from version numbers because they are always changing, that is why it's easier to update in the post, unless you expect to keep updating the video. HTH
