Pixel and Pixel XL let down. - Google Pixel XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Returning my Note 7 to BB today and just going to stick with my old Note 3 for now. I grabbed the N7 when the charge port in my N3 literally went up in smoke, even though I didn't really care for it or any phone on the market right now. Being on sprint network there really aren't many options for phones these days. I was looking at the pixel xl but it doesn't seem to work easily on sprint and I have to agree with everything in this video. Not mine - but seems pretty accurate really.

I took it as just another persons opinion, but he makes many valid points that can't be denied.
I was able to buy the charge port for my N3 for $5 and repaired it myself in 10 minutes. Believe it or not my N3 outperforms the N7 in every way except photo quality.
I wish everyone well with their pixel phones. Who knows, maybe someday I'll even end up with one, but I'm really hoping my N3 last until the next gen pixel and they add back the features they took away like dual front speakers, ois, micro sd slot, removable battery and larger screen. I realize removable battery may be gone forever, but it's more important to me than being able to submerse in water.

personally, i'd avoid vids with inflammatory, clickbait headlines from someone who obviously doesn't have the pixel xl (posted oct 11th). not sure how it's a "real life review".
edit: btw here's a pic of his youtube page. just screams legit, right?

Yeah, that dude is simply mad about everything...

1. The bezels are there because when you hold the phone it puts the prime real estate at your thumb height. Otherwise you have to bend your thumb down and reposition the phone. Also gives you something to hold in landscape mode besides the screen.
2. O.i.s. not needed..eis is great. No moving parts to break.
3. Design is not copying the iPhone. iPhone copied HTC. Google it.
Love the phone and battery life is amazing compared to any previous Nexus. Easy upgrade from Nexus 6p, which I owned before this.

I am on Sprint and it works fine. I preordered through Google and had to get a specific SIM card type from Sprint, but that's it.

I'm also on Sprint, what type of Sim did they give you? I'm using the one from my HTC 10 currently and I can't seem to get mms and SMS to work correctly. Can you confirm that you can send texts over 160 characters in stock messenger?

if you are having problems with sms/mms, its usually due to an incorrect APN; check your settings and confirm they are correct

I've had the XL since Friday and I have to be honest, it's going back. I think Google really made a mediocre phone but released it at the perfect time. I still don't understand why everyone thinks this phone is so great and revolutionary.
I got this from Verizon as a replacement for my Note 7 and to be honest I was super excited about it because of Google Assistant. I was wrong to be excited. I don't see it being any more useful than what's already on every other Android phone when you say "OK Google" and in 6 months you'll be able to download the assistant onto any Android phone from the Play Store.
No microsd, no wireless charging, no waterproofing... why are we being charged so much for a phone that looks like the iPhone 5 plus? The bezels on a top and bottom are way too big for this phone (they are) and the two tone back of the phone makes it feel like cheap plastic, not to mention the antenna bands. Two years ago this phone would have been worth it, now it should really cost about half of what they're asking for it.
I have an iPhone 7 plus for work and I have an S7 Edge. Both are better choices but I'm going to keep the note 7, it seriously is the best phone I've ever used. I just hope it isn't my last.

The APN settings are not available for me and I've been assuming it's due to my Sim card. I can only update profile/prl. I think I'll head to Sprint tomorrow and see if I need a different Sim card. Crossing fingers

Okay... but that still doesn't put it in the premium phone category. Also, there may be some long term damage to the phone.

I feel we're getting hung up on the waterproofing issue, probably the least important of the many with this phone. At least in my opinion.

I don't understand, You said buy an iPhone 7 plus cause it's better. But iphone 7 plus doesn't have microad, wireless charging, bezels that are even larger than the pixel xl, and have just as many antenna bands. Looks is very objective, I agree that note 7, iPhone and s7 edge are all good looking phones, but I personally think the Pixel looks just as good.
So everything you criticized against the pixel, iPhone 7 plus are the same or worse. I will give you the water resistant part, that's about the only quality you mentioned that is better than the pixel.
I agree the note 7 is a pretty awesome phone, but good luck bringing it on a plane since it's illegal, and good luck getting support and updates since Samsung will do neither of those 2 things. I would hate to see someone discover some major bug and security threat with the note 7 and you will never get an update for it. Anyway enjoy your note 7, I myself will enjoy my pixel in 2 days.

I wasn't really advocating specifically for the iPhone 7 plus, I'm really not much of an apple fan but you do get much more for your dollar. I hear you about the note 7, I think it really sucks that such an amazing phone had such a tragic end.
I really hope you do enjoy the pixel xl and post everything you like about it. I'm going to keep it for I think it's 30 days I have (with a Verizon business account) to give if more of a chance. Maybe it will grow on me or maybe I'm just honestly not using the assistant the way it was intended to be used.

I'm not a big iPhone fan either, my wife uses an iPhone 7 so I occasionally use hers. I also used my dad's iPhone 7 plus for a day before giving it to him, didn't see anything it has that's better than the pixel. One thing I do like is the 7plus camera 2x zoom feature.
I just feel the pixel is getting some unfair treatment. Most people just can't accept the price, so they try to find reasons why it's not worth it. I really only see 1 or 2 things other flagship phones that actually is better. But then if you count in the unlimited storage for full size pictures and videos Google is giving you, and fast updates, those features alone more than make up for it.

I don't understand the point to this thread.

But when your talking about paying more and getting less that is where the problem lies. I do agree with people about the water rating yes would be nice but not a necessity. The no ois is fine also.
But no sd card slot is googles way of trying to shove on line storage down our throat. Why should we use on line storage that is hackable and not secure.
Has no one read the reports of how most if not all the celebrity nude pics got hacked ? They are believed to be hacked from " the cloud " as these celebrities I doubt most gave them out or leaked them.
Also sd card storage is not only safer but it costs you no data use meaning not using high cost verizon data, and sd cards use way less battery power to access your files over on line storage.
Then there is the mono as in one speaker lol. Ok no front facing stereo speakers, but they could have copied the Htc 10 stereo speakers enabling the top speaker you use for calling to hear your calls on, which the audio would be so much better had they and louder. I highly doubt that Htc would not allow them to use that stereo speaker set up on the pixels.
Htc vs google is Htc saying sure google whatever you want we will make it happen lol.

I think the pixel is indeed overpriced. If it wasnt for the camera i would defintly go for a chinese phone.
I had a note 7, note 5 and a s6 before this, and the bloatware really hampers those phones.
Currently im on a huawei phone with only a 616 snapdragon and the os is way more reponsive than any of my samsungs.
So the pixel is my only real option to get a bloatware free phone with a flagship camera.

Like everyone else, I lament the demise of the Note 7 which in my mind was the best smartphone ever. I exchanged for the S7 Edge and though likeable, the VZW bloatware bogged it down. I also found it difficult to type on due to the curved screen edges and the keyboard felt a bit more cramped than Note 7 thanks to slightly smaller screen real estate: I made more typing/swyping mistakes. I did load the Unlocked firmware and what a difference it made as the phone was faster and battery improved tremendously. But, I did return it yesterday and my Pixel XL arrives tomorrow, so am keeping fingers crossed I like it. I can always return the Pixel and either wait for LG V20 or go back to Edge (but by that time we will be in November time frame and just a few months away from any Samsung newer Galaxy model) or continue using my 6P which still serves me well.

Worth buying nexus 6p right now? Or wait?

Is it worth to wait or buy the nexus 6p?
When comes the news about the new nexus phone?
It really depends on why you want to upgrade. For me I was coming from an s4 and the hardware and support was becoming out dated. I think the investment in the 6p is worth it compared to other phones with similar specs with a higher price tag.
I've just pick an 6p up come from a oneplus 2 and I'm not that overly impressed to be honest! Fonts way to small and I can't use my tomtom go I bought from the app store

Usually Nexus phones come out Oct/Nov so you still have quite a bit to go. I would say buy it, it's a great phone and one of the best, if not the best, android phones out right now.
FYI: Nexus phones are typically announced in October and released sometime in late November. Buying the 6P now will still give you a solid 9 months of use before you could even get your hands on the 2016 Nexus phones anyway.
I have a 5X and I'm actually considering a 6P at the moment as well. Over the past 3 months of use I've found that I am always underwhelmed by the speaker output. I have 1-3 conference calls per day and constantly find that the speaker audio quality just plain sucks. The speaker output on my iPhone 6s (work paid for it) puts the 5X's speaker to shame. Not to mention the vastly superior build quality of the iPhone over the 5X. Unfortunately, I can't stand IOS so I always end up going back to the 5X. From everything I've read/seen the 6P speakers should be as good or better than the iPhone and the build quality is equally as good as that of the iPhone.
The biggest thing I keep struggling with is the size. I hated the Nexus 6 because it was just too big and I never got used to it. I've read posts and watched video reviews that seem to show the new design of the 6P really makes it feel much smaller than the previous Nexus 6. I wish a local BetBuy had one for me to go play with but they don't have any display models.

The size honestly isn't as bad as the Nexus 6. It is a slimmer phone, for sure not as wide, and does not feel like a whale in your hand and pockets. You should try holding a Galaxy Note 5 or Iphone 6S Plus in store, I would describe the 6P feel in and like a mix between the two. The 6S Plus feels a bit bulky too me, and the Note 5 feels smaller because of its bezel. The 6P is by no means a small phone, but it feels nice in hand.
Yeah, the iPhone 6S was too bulky to me. I haven't tried the Note 5 though. I have to make a trip to Best Buy tomorrow so I'll spend some time with their display Note 5 to see how it feels. Thanks for the tip.

I agree coming from a smaller s4. While the 6p is a big phone. It has a great balance and feel in the hand. I don't even think about the size of the phone.
If stock Android isn't a must for you, then I absolutely wouldn't touch a 6P right now. Much better phones were just announced over the weekend.
I know I will get a ton of hate for that answer, but it's the truth.
On the flip side, if stock Android is important to you, then yes, take the leap.

If your really that ambitious to think you would like one, without ever picking up the actual phone, I ordered mine from best buy and picked up in 3 days. They assured me 14 days with the phone to try it out, and a return policy with no questions asked. I can tell you I was skeptical of never buying a phone without actually physically touching it. And now after having the phone for almost a month I can say this will be a phone I can value for the next 3 years.

The 2013 Nexus 5 and 7 are still being updated with the monthly security updates currently, so I would expect the 6P to be supported by Google for at least another couple of years.

Interesting. I considered going the BestBuy route since they told me they could have it for me by Friday. But i'd like to get Nexus protect too. Is it possible to get Nexus protect even if you don't order it directly from Google?
I already have a buyer lined up for my Nexus 5X so I'm about to pull the trigger either way.

If I'm going to have to replace it, again.. What with????

Well I just went to AT&T to try the LG v20. It's as big as an iPhone 7 Plus, but I have to say I thought it was fantastic. It's screen is slightly bigger, it's brighter (!) which surprised me and when I ran gagnam style on both (always my test video) I have to say that I thought the screen was better on the v20. The whites are whiter and the Note looked yellowish by comparison. Very interesting. It's also far quicker at switching apps, as fast as the iPhone. Camera is very quick too.
Anyway just food for thought. There is life after the Note7

Yeah if I have to replace my note I'm thinking the v20. Don't want the s7 edge (had it as a loaner and it was okay but not great). Only disappointment is that I won't be able to use my new gear vr. Also, at&t's version won't come with those earphones

I will take the v20, 64gb storage, 4gb ram, usb-c, 5.7 screen, android 7.0, not water resistant, but its not like you can use the note 7 for snorkeling so, I think the note 7 is done. So lets go LG

Yeah I think I may wait to see what Samsung does to try to keep my business. My guess is that they realize this is a big pain to customers and will hopefully offer a special deal to keep them loyal. If not I will probably switch to a different brand. Not sure what yet though since there isn't much that compares.

I feel ya, but I could never go back to Apple. Like being handcuffed... Just can't stand iOS, the device itself is awesome but can't stand iOS.
I still have an S7e so I will probably go back to that for the short term. I love the Note line even if it is re-branded I will look at the Note 8 next year.
i did the same, returned Note 7 for pre order of LG V20 this morning. The camera was extremely fast, it was snapping pics as fast as I hit the button. The screen was slightly bigger, or appeared to be anyway (good thing). I like the little display on the top as well, and display looked much better than I expected. Cant wait for my order to arrive!

I settled for the S7 Edge once already, because Samsung screwed up the Note 5. That's 2x in a row in my book. I don't want to go back to it, because 1.) I'm spoiled by the Note 7's 64GB plus expandable storage, and 2.) The edges are more obvious, and i do not like them at all. There's also the lack of S- pen and hdr. The Note 7 also boosts the audio for video playback, which I loved.
**I consider the Note 5 a flop, because there was no expandable storage and 64GB max onboard. The same reason that I haven't bought a 1+3. NB4 you don't need more than 64GB. If company says "Never Settle", don't tell me to settle.**
If I go back to Apple, I get the water resistance, imessage, stereo speakers, unrivaled speed, great battery life, and a home button that is not on-screen (lookin at you, Google and LG). I also lose micro sd (got 256 on-board so), fast charging, wireless charging, qhd, and certain freedoms on the software.
If Samsung would let me buy a Note 7, or if the 1+3 could take a micro sd card, we wouldn't be having this discussion. But the Pixel XL is crap (my opinion), the htc 10 is too small, the S7 Edge is too curvy, and the 1+3 lacks enough storage. I know, I'm picky.

I have been anti apple for as long as I can remember. I do not like apple for many reasons from being so constrained on a phone I own to apples business model to apples proprietary hardware etc etc. BUT this time I decided to give the 7+ a try for 1 year after i returned my Note 7. So far after 2 weeks I have absolutely nothing bad to say about my 7 Plus. It is incredibly fast, incredibly powerful and just down right does everything perfectly EXCEPT they are having some bluetooth issues with certain devices. One of those happens to be my 8.4" UConnect headunit that it is not streaming nicely with. Random skips and choppy audio when streaming music. But my headunit has ipod controls so I simply plug my 7 Plus into a usb port and stream my music that way and it charges the phone as well. If you do go 7 plus I dont think you will be unhappy with it. Also the standby time and overall battery life is outstanding. I first got a silver one then decided I want black instead so my 128GB Silver one is on ebay right this second with 2 days left in the auction. Brand new condition.
So I talked to someone I know that works for Samsung. Samsung is a business partner of the company I work for. It is not looking good. Right now there are two options being discussed internally at Samsung.
1.) Stop the production of the Note 7 ALL together and refund everyone who bought one. This is an issue because phones sold on a secondary market may be difficult to get refunds for. It also will cause many users to leave Samsung all together and go the LG V20 / Pixel / iPhone 7 rout.
2.) Do ANOTHER recall replacement. I was told a new run of the phones would be available by the end of the month to be swapped out if Samsung chooses to go down this path AGAIN. I would hope the 3rd time is the charm and this 3rd build of the phone is perfect. However this has issues as well. There is a chance some if not all of the USA carriers won't pick up the 3rd version of the phone AT ALL and not offer it as a replacement to consumers. Also if it is offered as a replacement there is still not guarantee that USA carriers will EVERY being to sell it as new again.
Both of these options leave me with a few concerns.
1.) This phone will probably NEVER have the correct software support it deserves. Meaning IF it gets the android 7.1 update in the 4th quarter of this year like it is supposed to it will probably be the only update it ever gets. Also it may not get the monthly security patches ever, which makes this not usable for my work.
2.) I do not know what Samsung can do to restore confidence with me that this 3rd version of the Note 7 will not one day blow up. I have also lost all faith in the CPSC. I mean what are they doing this time that will GUARANTEE that this version of the phone won't blow up as well. Just seems like its going to be a hard sell to me.
3.) Samsung still seems a bit short sited to me on fixing this issue. If they really want to "stop the bleeding" of loyal customers they need to focus on future product sales. Again this means leaving the Note 7 dumpster fire behind, but it also means trying to convert note 7 users into future sales. I would hope they would consider offering a discount voucher for a Samsung phone bought in the future as a part of this 2nd recall, but judging by everything I have seen coming from their company it looks like they are more worried about the now, and they are going to lose even more customers because of it.
Anyone have any other thoughts? What would it take for Samsung to get you to stay with the Note 7, or in the future consider buying a S8 or a Note 8?
What stores have the lg v20 demo?
I returned both of ours for a full refund.. Ordered an axon 7 and a oneplus 3 as replacements.
Seriously I went into my local Att store and no V20 demo unit there.
Heres my 2 cents. I came from the Note 4, and the Note 2 before that, so you can understand the waiting I had to do in order to get something amazing. The Note 7 checks so many boxes off of a long list of features that I have always found useful. The pen, the screen size and resolution as well as top specs in the cpu and ram department every time they are released. But, this one thing that kept buggin me on the newer Notes was the non-removable batteries. It was the reason I held out on upgrading the Note 4 for so long. And here we are witnessing something that is hugely affected by the decision of not including that capability.
In terms of what Samsung should have done, its obvious - they should have included a slightly smaller battery in terms of thickness and capacity in order to reduce the risk of defects. Something like a smaller/thinner 3000 mah battery would have been totally fine. Even a slightly thicker version of the 3600 mah battery and thicker chassis would have been fine as well. But my honest opinion is that devices that are catching fire are actually suffering from some slight bending in the chassis at some point after they are purchased. This most likely would be something like dropping it hard or even having it bend slightly when in a pocket. Im thinking the latter is the cause for the batteries to have warped a tiny fraction causing the layers/connectors in the batteries to warp. But this is an inherent risk with all batteries in phones I think. Its just exponentially worse the thinner you go. And if the production tolerances on both those aspects are so dang tight, expect more issues than say an Iphone which can bend all day and still not catch fire.
It would be great to see Samsung give people full refunds for international variants and exchanges through carriers like they are doing. Should they give a discount for future devices? It would be awesome obviously from a consumer standpoint. Will they actually give some discount of meaningful value? Most likely not. They are a massive multi-billion dollar corporation. I would think the Note customer base is the smaller of their top 2 devices. So even if they lose some of this crowd, there is still the massively successful S7/S7 edge crowd to bank on. Especially since we will be seeing the S8 in like 4-6 months. Its actually smart of them to stagger device releases in this case. I'm not particularly excited about anything else being released this year. Google has the specs now, but looks so boring. And that top headphone jack...just ugh. The iphone as everyone saw is just a placeholder until next year. The V20 is, well, just another LG phone. Tough decisions all around at this point.

This store has a demo, I messed with it for a bit while my Note 7's were being returned.

Anyone played with an Honor 8 or the ZTE AXON?
I am not a fan of LG devices.
I'm probably go back to the S7e but it's really not a great replacement.
How many people would get another replacement Note 7 if one is offered?

I will , but I will wait to trade mine in . When they have them in the store , then I will go. I still want this phone , its why I bought it in the first place.

Wait for pixel 2 or buy U11?

So I'm currently a T-Mobile subscriber which is normally awesome until they declined to carry the u11. I currently have an S8 but I really don't like the 18:9 display and the battery life can be a little underwhelming some days. So I'm currently itching to jump to another phone and my short list has me at the U11 and the rumored pixel 2. Part of me wants to drop that pretty penny for the U11 (especially the solar red), but buying unlocked is not cheap as we all know. I love the design, boomsound, audio, camera, and middle of the road on software (it does look admittedly dated), but I'm skeptical about the size of the phone and the battery life (though I see some crazy numbers for those that rooted). I don't have the biggest hands but can manage a larger phone if it's well designed at least. This further brings me to the fact that the Pixel 2 is relatively close to announcement and I'm thinking there's a good chance it'll come to T-Mobile this year (but that's me speculating). Anyways, point is, I'm not a huge fan of my s8 and would like to move to the U11 or wait for the pixel 2. I like the OP5 but the lack of ois and weak video/audio recording quality pushes me away from it some. The Z2 Force's reliance on mods also really killed it for me... What are people's thoughts on this situation? Is the U11 worth the $600 now or should I wait for a phone that may or may not be on T-Mobile with similar specs and features with a smaller available screen? Any and all input is welcome, I'm very in the middle of the road here if you can't tell!
Grab the HTC U11 you will love it

If I'm not mistaken, they had the Nexus 6. Maybe the Nexus One and 4 but don't quote me on that.
My speculation is simply based on the fact that the Pixel was an attempt to make a strong direct to consumer phone for enthusiasts and casual users. Releasing it on Verizon and unlocked may have been to just test the waters for a more widespread launch for the Pixel 2. If any other carrier will be offering the Pixel 2 aside from Verizon, my money is on T-Mobile since they had the promotion where they covered $325 if you bought an unlocked pixel and Google is probably going to want to look into making the Pixel 2 more available.
But again, it's speculation and expectations. Google could go back to selling only unlocked models once again like they've done before (Nexus 6 -> 6p; Galaxy Nexus -> Nexus 4). Or they'll do a larger launch. Who knows for sure.
People got this "big bezels" in their head so they follow the trend of saying this beautiful phone "looks dated" that is absolutely ridiculous. This beast is a beaut both front and back and I'd much rather be holding and looking at the front of the HTC U11 than the weird looking S8. It does not look dated.

Yeah I use the HTC wallet case so I'm used to two hand usage. It kinda sucks cause of the squeeze feature is much nicer without it but I like wallet cases too, especially the HTC Iceview. But as soon as I get a new good clear case I will ditch the wallet. Edge sense is really great for one hand usage especially with edge sense plus.

Did you root and flash your phone already? I would plan on doing that at some point but not sure when. How would you say day to day battery life is like pre-root, especially when using social media apps like Facebook, Snapchat, and what's app?

This is the first device that makes me feel like I don't need to root. Of course I did cause there are some simple things I miss and some of the edge sense plus features won't work without root but as far as optimization there is no need. This phone is so perfect it's unreal lol.
Honestly, this is a pretty biased place to ask the question. I love the phone, but I'm sure all the people on this forum do.
I guess it depends on how urgently you need a phone. In terms of strengths and weaknesses I'm pretty sure the Pixel and the U11 are going to be very similar. Maybe Pixel will be marginally better in terms of speed and battery life and U11's audio quality will be better.

The first Android phone ever, the G1, was a T-Mobile exclusive and they carried the Nexus 6 as well. It's doubtful they will carry the Pixels though. T-Mobile pushes Samsung worse than any fanboy ever could so even if they were to get the Pixels, the stores would shove Samsung garbage down your throat. For both the M7 and M8, I had to make them get the phone from the back at one of the Denver stores, it wasn't even on display and the employees acted like they didn't have the M8 and suddenly a box was in front of me when I raised my voice in the middle of the store during lunch rush about where they could shove their Samsung phones.
As to the OP's question, I'd get the U11 personally. I have no complaints about this phone and I'm not even rooted. The battery life is ridiculous, the performance is ridiculous, and you get a lot for your money including the usonic headphones which are incredible for an in ear headset (I usually won't use them but these are comfortable, stay in, and the sound quality is stellar) and a basic case in the box. My only complaint is that 4x4 MIMO is only for Sprint but that's not a big deal since I'm rarely ever away from WiFi and I'm perfectly fine with the speeds I get when I am.
GSAM since July 9th:
Battery life: 17h 5m (8h 23m active)
SoT: 6h 45m (8h 6m max)
I play a ton of games so obviously I have zero complaints on battery life either.
I don't regret this purchase one bit, even with the interest I'm paying on my credit card for it. Hands down the best phone I've had.

I let Boost+ optimize my games so they render at 1080p and I disabled News Republic but other than that, no. My 10 can't even come close to 6 hours with web browsing, forget about 8 with mixed usage and it has the same size battery.
One of my friends has always been on T-Mobile and he got his Nexus 5 from them. It didn't last more than a year it's sitting on my desk split open, the screen popped off of it from when he fell on it. It still works, I rooted it and flash a custom ROM for him but he hasn't picked it back up yet. Last Nexus I owned was the Galaxy Nexus and after owning nothing but HTC's since it brought back memories of how much they are cheap plastic. ***Edit I forgot, he actually kept it until they stopped updating it, that is why I rooted it for him.
Personally I wouldn't wait. The U11 is great, I personally returned my Pixel XL because it just wasn't that great compared to my 6P. I'm hopeful for the Pixel 2. But I'm not gonna hold my breath for anything amazing and figure I can always sell the U11 to make up some of the cost.

Anyone upgrading to pixel 4?

Just curious what people's thoughts were
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
I got one yesterday after the live event and put it in my cart then I realized I can't justify $946 for a phone that has a few better features than my GP2XL. I love my Pixel2xl and spending that much money for essentially a better camera, graphics, and processor (none of which are THAT important to me) doesn't make sense to me. So I cleared my cart and bought a new case for my GP2XL instead for $11 on Amazon. Like Pixel 3, the Pixel 4 just doesn't wow me enough to spend that kind of money. I am not a astrophotographer so that doesn't matter to me.
I will eventually but waiting for a better deal than just 100 off. I was disappointed by the value of trade ins but I'll probably hold onto my pixel 2 until the photo upload promo expires.
Things I'm looking forward to on the pixel 4.
1) snappier performance with hopefully better memory management
2) the faster Google Assistant with continued conversation like feature. I'm a heavy voice command user and cutting down on the amount of times I say the launch phrase will be welcomed.
3) wireless charging. I think it's time for me to get it back now that my family is all on wireless charging. The pads can be used for multiple devices now.
4) better display. I've gotten used to the pixel 2 display but always long for more when I look at Samsung or apple OLED displays.
5) soli seems a bit gimmicky but if it allows me to change songs in my car without having to touch it, then that will be huge for me. Easier than me having to buy a new car or a new head unit.
Things I worry about
1) that face id better be damn good. Smart Lock is starting to get wonky. My watch doesn't keep my phone unlocked at all times like it's supposed to. Keeps saying locked manually.
2) original photo upload. It's something I think won't miss until it's gone. Sharing albums with friends and not having it compressed takes the sting out of not having something like iMessage which doesn't compress photos. Now i have to figure out a different way to share the full quality pictures with them
3) battery life.... ALWAYS BATTERY LIFE!

Nope I bought 2 refurbished 2xls so I'm set for the Long haul. I despise glass backs.

I couldn't bring myself to buy the Pixel 3 but I bought two pixel 4XL's yesterday. I debated hard about doing it because there really isn't anything wrong with my 2XL and it does everything I need it to do. I'm the person that upgrades every year and in the end I just couldn't go past two years without a new phone. I might kick myself later but what can you do....lol
Nope, no upgrade for me,i had it in my cart and cleared it the moment i realized it doesn't have a fingerprint scanner, I'm ready to upgrade but not to a phone without fingerprint scanner

I too, was going to get it as I figured hell, it's a pixel 4xl and will be perfect to work with especially here in these forums. I even had it ordered for a full day, but alas, today I cancelled it as it simply is too much for not good enough specs. I do believe in two days I'm going to order the one plus 7t. (Just my thoughts)
Yep. Do I need it? Nope! Am I looking forward to trying something sorta-kinda new....you betchya! I don't buy much stuff ever, but every 2 years, I treat myself to a new device :good:
I think i also keep my pixel for another year.its still a solid phone with good bat life and an awesome cam.
I just received a complete new pixel from Google cause of warranty issues .and this after almost 2 year's haha.
This time i will stay a bit on pie because 10 ****ed my phone up somehow before.
Yes, Pixel 4 XL. Way better camera, best display on the market, onboard AI no need for data connection, live transcribe, motion sense, fastest face unlock, faster CPU, 6GB RAM and afree chrome book. Let's be honest most of these features cannot be backported to the Pixel 2, maybe some camera tweaks. The transcribe required the new AI chip and service so unlikely. And my Pixel is starting to show it's age, likes to stutter a little now and again.
Many people moaned the Pixel 2 only had 4GB RAM, so there's a reason for them to upgrade.
Can't see why upgrade honestly, I only got the phone a year ago, and it's performing pretty well.
But pixel 5 will be a day one buy that's for sure.
Damn I'm glad I'm not the only one with a p2xl, thought I was slacking on my new tech. I really just love this phone! XD
Same boat as Badger50. I ordered one with delivery of next week. If it doesn't wow me, I'll return it and probably get the OP7T. If the 7T doesn't do it for me, then P2xl lives on.
Pre-ordered it immediately when the Google Store was refreshed. I thought about doing the trade-in and even ordered the box for it but I think I'll try my luck with Swappa instead. I'm sure I'll get more than Google's $143 offer with all the cases and accessories I have.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
I'm still undecided on whether I'm going to get one or not. I'm still using my pixel 2XL, and it performs just as well as the day I bought it 2 years ago, no joke. I skipped the 3XL--no explanation necessary. I was thinking I might wait and see what the 4A looks like when that comes out, but I'll probably cave in and get the 4XL eventually. However, I'm not pre-ordering it or even thinking about actually buying it until I see that root is available for it. I pre-ordered the pixel 2XL and it royally sucked to go without root for the first few weeks.

1. It's looking very fast and even though right now it's able to unlock with eyes closed (not a big deal for me) I'm sure they're working on adding an eyes open option. It was in the leaks.
2. High quality is plenty for average people but One Drive is super affordable. 100GB for $20/year isn't a lot at all.

Since our security updates will end this month, I plan to upgrade for those and take advantage of the strong T-Mobile 5G signal in my area.

If you only now just saw the specs you haven't been following the news. You likely also do not understand why Google didn't go with the 865/865+ in the two devices.
For me, it boils down to which features I consider more important. Right now I'm leaning towards the P5 simply because of the aluminum body, but the 4A 5G and its headphone jack is compelling. I think in the end, it's going to boil down to "do I want to pay the extra $200 or not?"

Ive never been one of the sheeple, the people who buy into aspirational technology (people who aspire to own somehting because its new and everyone else has one), so its not even a decision for me. Im a fucntional user, if a device performs the functions i need it to, im happy. The only reason i ever upgrade devices is when one is dead, or very much close to being....
I do not get the "new device every 6 months" buyers...i just dont, i think thats insanity
Personally i look at the lines of sheeple at Apple Stores on every release and weep for humanity, and the planet which gets raped to bring people ovepriced (thanks to Apple - they are the root of all evil, not least because they overprice their products, thereby forcing everyone in the market to follow suit, because to do anythign less is to be seen as inferior, so blame Apple, i do, asshat comapny) devices they dont really need
Pretty much the forumula is: new phone = new camera that takes pictures of an even more distant galaxy, hmm very useful in every day life
Some people in some countries have way too much spare money if theyre buying new phones all the time
Im sticking with what works for me, not a corporations bottom line, thanks
Also this:

I loved the Pixel 5. I think Google made a small decision to stick with full hd resolution simply because you don't notice as such if the panel is good. It's easy on the battery. It will be easy on the chipset and provide consistent performance.
Pixel 5 does not lack anything as such. The only thing i was a bit disappointed was ufs 2.1 storage. Other than that I'm loving the Pixel 5. I'll get it maybe this Christmas or so!
The more I think about it, the more the 4a5g is looking like the better deal. Only differences between it and the five are two less gigabytes of RAM, no 90hz refresh, and a smaller battery, but the battery is still bigger than the 2xl, so battery life should still be an improvement. I've not yet owned a phone that had a 90hz refresh rate, so that's not really a huge deal to me yet.
The big draw toward the 4a5g for me personally is that the screen is bigger, which would make it feel like more of an upgrade compared to the 2XL.
The materials used are also different, but I've never really been a huge fan of glass backs. Plastic was always all right with me, so the 4a5g won't bother me in that regard. It supposedly feels pretty good in the hand even though its materials are "lesser than” the materials used for the 5 back.
Forgot about wireless charging too, but personally I've never owned a phone that had wireless charging, so again, not a big deal for me yet.

I second your thoughts here. 4a5 is certainly a better handset and not much hard hitting on the pocket too!
So far with lack of reviews and having seen a few of the random videos we can get. The OnePlus 8 Pro is looking better to me. Really need to see some full reviews

I kind of agree with you here, except that I am seriously looking at going the OnePlus 8T route.

I am changing my mind to OnePlus 8 Pro too, I can go to swappa.com and get for less price than P5 with taxes. I am seriously considering going back to iPhone. Google has been using the same camera sensor hardware since the Pixel 2 came out. That means if Google ported the sofware algorithms to the Pixel 2 it would take pictures the same if not damn close to being the same.
after being a 4 year pixel 2 xl owner... the pixel 5 feels like a natural successor. Jut my opinion though
i currently use a pixel 3 because i prefer the size but im pretty much done with the pixel series. the cost is far too high and the features are less and less. the 4 had no fingerprint reader..... so i was thinking of getting a Zenfone 7. great size, great amount of ram........ EXPANDABLE STORAGE!!! but after seeing the OnePlus Nord N10, i might change my mind. ill have to see after the first reviews but it has what i want/need in a phone. google is just too obsessed with trying to either win the apple crowd, or become like apple.
maybe if they ever add features like expandable storage ill buy another pixel but the odds of that happening are not good. knowing google, theyll probably give up on the pixel line after the pixel 7 so i plan on holding on to my Panda Pixel indefinitely.
Okay i changed my decision probably.
I don't think i'll be getting Pixel 5 solely because of outdated hardware. Only if they had upgraded the camera sensors i'd have gone for it. The current sensor is at the end of its life.
I can't decide if I want to get a OP8T, OP8 Pro, or Pixel 5.
I prefer the flat screen of the 5 and 8t, the rear fingerprint sensor on the 5, and the telephoto on the 8 pro.
Get rid of P2-XL?

Just saw the specs of P5....Poor resolution upgrade!
I guess it's pointless and waste of money....what are your thoughts?

Depends on your battery. After October, no more OTA's from Google.
If your battery is good, between updates from Google Play Store and LineageOS, I think the phone
would be plenty secure. I plan to keep using mine for awhile. running LineageOS

lol Flat screen is such a bliss. My next phone will be a flat screen. I am tired of this curved look and miss touches due to the curve
I went from. The p2xl to the 5, it's definitely an upgrade for me. I love how smooth it feels with the extra ram and 90hs screen, the SD765g has no trouble giving me a great experience on the couple games I do play, (pubg and genshin impact) the battery life for me is about double what the 2xl was and I'm happy to know I'll be getting monthly security updates for the next three years. There are still a couple things I don't like. The top behind the screen speaker is just so-so, far inferior to the 2xl's stereo front firing speakers. However I don't watch or listen to much without headphones or a bt speaker anyways and it does fine for calls. they removed a feature I did actually like.. active edge, I miss sweezing to activate assistant rather than saying hey Google or swiping the corner but still not really a deal breaker for me just so thing to get used to.
