Is Adoptable Storage Encrypted? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hi everyone, I used a 200GB card to create adoptable storage on my S7 edge using the ADB method. Could anyone tell me if the storage is automatically encrypted, or if we have to encrypt the SD card first, and then format it to get the benefits of encryption?

yes

Sorry, just to confirm, it Is automatically encrypted? So if I removed it and want to use it elsewhere I would need to reformat the card?

Of course, there is deeply hidden top secret procedure to follow, which would allow you to do it, although Windows systems are normally preventing Fat32 formatting over 32GB. Follow it HERE.
Personally, I prefer Ridgecrop's fat32 format with nice GUI...

Thanks for the tip, just to confirm, i need to convert my 64gb to fat32 so i can format my sd card?
have you tried formatting is using your phone?
the basics: are you using an SD card adapter? if so, check if the write protect switch is toggled.

It is your choice. You can format it either: exFAT, NTFS, Fat32. Your phone may support anything except NTFS. Your computer can format it natively under exFAT or NTFS.
I'd try to format it via phone, first. If phone cant recognize it correctly, I'd try ExFAT. finally, I'd use third party soft to make it Fat32.

From the screenshot, you have opened several explorer windows. If one of it is pointed on the card, format cannot access the card properly.
Secondly, I hope you have run the guiformat as administrator?
Finally, looking on your other posts, if you were unable to format the card under the phone, please copy all your files to PC, and try to format it from PC, under normal Windows procedure, as NTFS. If that will fail - most likely you have faulty card.
I guess you should read microSD card reviews before buying them. That's why I chose a Samsung microSD card. I have read that Samsung phones have had problems with sandisk cards.

SD card unsupported

Hi guys..
My brother recently updated his x play to marshmallow and used his sd card (sandisk 32 gb) as internal storage. Few days back he did a factory reset after which the phone is not recognising sd card (it shows the sd card as 'unsupported') and asks to format it, to use . he'll lose all the data, if he formats it.
Any help would be highly appreciated.

I guess that's the only way as the card is encrypted.

Though the card is encrypted, it should be usable in the same phone.
Isn't there any way to recover data from the card (mainly photos)?

You can try some recovery apps available over the Internet.
Same thing happened with my friend also. He had his external formatted as internal and factory resetted his device. When restarted, the phone said to format the external card. ?

Mac Software for Partitioning SD card?

I've rooted my S4, and now I'm trying to partition the SD card so that I can use link2sd and free up some more space. Does anyone know how to do this using a Mac??
Many thanks in advance!

A resize option may appear only after you have formatted the sd card using twrp.

Oh, okay. I might try that...how certain is this 'may appear'? I'm concerned about losing stuff...if I backup my SD card onto computer through a file manager, will it back up EVERYTHING or could I still lose some data?

You just copy everything from the sd card onto the pc. Android apps usually store their data on the internal storage, so the sd card has only files that you put there.
I recently formatted my /data partition as ext4 and after the format there was a resize option, which wasn't there before formatting.

As I was saying, I used the "change file system" option to format my data partition, and that gave me the resize option.

Ahh okay, got it. But with this method, is there a way to choose the size of the partition? When I click on 'resize', there are no settings - just a 'swipe to confirm'...
Also, when I turned on my phone I still have no extra internal memory, and the SD card is not found. I try to mount the SD card from Settings -> Storage, but it just says "Blank SD card"...

More storage space

My daughter has not enough space on her Tmobile Grand Prime 8GB, but her SD card is 64GB. What can I do to add more space without rooting the phone? I know 6.0 has adoptable storage but she is on 5.1.1 right now. Thanks in advance.
You cannot do much without root about thr storage space. But the thing you can do is go to setting application manager or storage then application and select a desired app and chose the option move to sd this will move part of the app to sd card
Do you have a rooted grand prime? I haven't rooted in years but I know how to do it.

Thx, I'll try that. Just one quick question did you continue using the SD card as internal memory or you just used it as external storage?

I found that if you try to use the SD card when you have connected the charger it doesn't show and it's inaccessible
