Is there any way I can swap the back button and the recent app button? Thanks

Damn. My lg g3 could do this without root. Such a simple feature. Blows my mind it isn't included. Thanks anyways.

Guys,
Just taken delivery of my first Android handset - nice to be back on here, spent years on here when I ran WM! Anyway, I've been looking for and haven't found an app that'll let me wake the phone by pressing any button, rather than just the power button. Seen stuff for WM, but not Android.
Can anyone help?

to be honest having used the htc hero I was always getting frustrated cause everytime I took out the phone from my pocket I found it had unlocked cause the minute you pressed any of the home search , menu buttons the phone would unlock and it could then even make unwanted phone calls but as for the desire it only wakes when u press the power button which I think is great just my own opinion.
Try this one on the market :
http://apps.doubletwist.com/No-Lock/-2216879159323801559
When you'll hit any key, no more "slide to unlock", phoen wake up direct to home screen
Having used the HD2 I too miss this feature. Not necessarily pressing a key to unlock the device, but simply to bring up the 'drag down to unlock' screen.

Here is this one also - http://apps.doubletwist.com/Screen-ON-widget/6251491150679267019
These 2 apps replace the need to "slide-to-unlock", but wouldn't you still have to press down the "power" button to actually turn on the screen?
I too have found this a little annoying. I think this may be a feature that can be changed once rooting of the phone starts.
Sort of like re-mapping the hardware buttons to where all you have to do is hit the trackpad or MENU button to activate the screen.
Application like this?

No this would be interesting to possibly get for the Desire. Allows you to remap the hardware buttons. Too bad it is -
1 - For the Hero
2 - Requires root
After pressing the power key, mine unlocks by pressing just the menu button as well, FWIW.

For now i've installed MyLock. It removes the lockscreen completely. Now i just press power once.

that's a bonus, thanks.
what would be even nicer would be if the screen woke up (to lockscreen is fine) on a press of any hardware button. guess it'll need root.
just figured out how i am using 2 programs one is nolock and seccond is Widget Locker. nolock wakes up the phone with any key and by default unlocks the phone BUT if you have Widget Locker installed it prevents from unlocking so that way you have your phone with any-button wake and still locked, tested with my LG 2x ,first app is lightweight and dont consume much battery.. i dont know if i made my self clear im italian email me if you want the link or any question

Wanted to know if anyone has developed an onscreen back, and menu button, my most used.
I used button savior, but was always in the way it seemed, and too many buttons I didn't need.
Curious if anyone is working on this or has a recommendation.
Thanks everyone
really need this, my buttons are going to shiet
Or a program that would make swype gestures perform home button functions
This would be awesome. My back button is a little creaky now.

Ya, my buttons feel loose, but they creak when I press them. Feels like I am messing the phone up physically.
Swype gestures would be the best way I think, a program on that starts on boot.
bump, I believe this could be a popular application
I multi-task a lot and switch between apps often. Instead of using the physical home button of the S4, is there a way I can have a feature that maps the function to either the menu or the back button and access it only when I long-press it? I feel like I would wear down the physical button and it takes more effort.
Thanks!

I know how you feel when using the home button. After long searching, I found an app that uses swipe gestures on screen to activate actions like going to home screen and bringing up the recent app. This is a $0.99 app called Swipe Home Button in the Play Store. For what it is worth, definitely a buy. There is also a trial for you to try, so it can't hurt to check it out!
Looked around and didn't see this being brought up. Is there away to out the multitasking app instead of the menu button and bring back the 3 dot menu button back in apps? Hate freaking menu buttons and having to long press the home.
I remember figuring out a way to add software nav buttons on an S4 manually by editing some lines in the system but since the soft nav bar is already present I don't think that would work. Any ideas? Thanks.

Root, and there's a few nav bar replacements in the play store that autohide as well.

I'm with you, I think its stupid to have a dedicated menu button when android already has this covered.
The apps the poster above is speaking of does not fix this issue as it also hides the buttons, which is just dumb. Just be patient, I'm sure we will have a fix soon!

This may be my only gripe about this phone, I have tried several of the options, but you have to hide it or tour home screen icons in the dock get lost.

While using the Note 2 I was able to go to the (root) system file and mess with the nav bar. Im going to play with this in a few. I'll report back.

With the S4 I was able to manually add the On screen nav buttons with a line of code. Default android soft buttons are back home and multitask LG edited that to the menu button which is annoying. Let me know what you find. I'm going to try some stuff my self

While I would like to have a dedicated multitasking button, I don't think the menu button is a waste or stupid. There are still numerous apps that don't adhere to Google's new rules for a software menu button and they result in a black bar on the screen. LG dodged this by adding a dedicated software menu button. If you want to see how annoying it is, just pick up an HTC One (or DNA, or One X) and it will make more sense. What they did is emulate the Optimus G Pro (and Samsung's Touchwiz) with software buttons to give the same feel (hold home for multitasking, back and menu). I see why they did it. But yeah, it would be nice if they'd add an option for a multitasking button as either a fourth option or in place of the menu. It would certainly make more sense than the notification shade toggle.

The main reason I did not get the One was because of the stupid buttons. First not on screen and second only 2 buttons.
I do think it will only be a matter of time until someone makes a zip to add the recent button back. Wish I knew how

So my solution to this after 2 days of fiddling with the phone and trying EVERYTHING actually turned out for the better. The setup I have is using GMD gesture control for my buttons and auto hide navbar to have the navbar gone. This app let's you slide certain regions of the screen and trigger different conditions. I have no buttons at all on my screen and have slide functions that work perfect exactly where the Normal buttons would go. Slide up on the left is menu, slide in middle is home, and slide in right is recent apps. My back button is set by my thumb and it works out much better than I could have hoped.

Apps that have their own 3-dot menu
Thanks for the research on this topic. Does anyone know if the GMD app allows an app to retain its 3-dot menu functionality? I've encountered several apps that won't work with the G2's menu softkey preventing you from accessing the app's options.
thanks in advance!
Hi
I bought galaxy s4 last month but I am not happy with functionality of the home and sensor buttons. In my opinion switch application (the list of all previously opened apps) is very important button and I am not happy to wait whole second holding down home button to get simple alt+tab feature. At all this big hardware button does not fit in the whole picture and its the biggest mistake of this phone. Now I cannot remove it but at least I want to use it as much as little I can. So I want to switch menu button and "hold home" buttons. Its far more sensible to make separate sensor button for switching app than use it for menu functionality. I didn't root my phone and I don't want to root it but if its needed to get rid of this stupidness I will make it. So is there any way to switch menu button and "hold home" button?
thx
