Any tips for better fingerprint scanner response? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

I'm rooted on APG1 and I would estimate the fingerprint scanner success rate at about 30% (that's being nice, it's likely considerably lower). I've deleted and recreated my fingerprint profile multiple times and with both thumbs. Same pitiful results.
Any suggestions, tips, or hacks to making this work better? If it's worth noting, I'm using the Incipio Performance lvl3 case which does have a protective lip at the top and bottom of the phone.
Thanks.

"When setting up a fingerprint on the Galaxy S7, it's important to remember to grab at least two pictures of your thumb going across the sensor diagonally. If all you do is move your thumb from top to bottom or from left to right, it's easy to create gaps in that complete picture. Adding a couple of diagonal captures during setup decreases the chances of this happening, which in turn makes your failure rate significantly lower when unlocking the phone every day.
The oval shape of the Galaxy S7 home button is the real key here. As long as you remember during fingerprint setup that the fingerprint being stored is the result of 13 different presses on the sensor, each capturing a long strip of your thumb and not much else, it becomes a lot easier to deal with. You won't be pressing your finger onto the Galaxy S7's home button the same exact way every time you unlock it, so don't put it on there the same way every time when you're registering it in the first place."

My unlock success rate is 19/20, I have even set up 2 fingers from one hand and 2 from other hand on very different positions, so it does not matter how I hold my phone it unlock perfectly almost all of the time

Screen toast after only 2 years?

So my Simple Touch Reader is about 2 years old and I'm pretty sure the screen is already toast (or almost toast) . I have to swipe tons of times to unlock it, and when I actually can unlock it, swipe to turn page almost never works...I have to use the buttons. It's like my Nook's screen has lost all sensitivity.
After only 2 years it's pretty disappointing.
Any ideas on what might be the problem...and how to fix it?
Thanks.
Clean the screen.
The IR sensors are sensitive to any crud that may have collected.
Use a lightly damp Q-Tip to clean the inside of the bezel.
It would be interesting if I could see that Nook now.
When there is no finger on the screen only a single IR LED pulses in a slow fashion.
Once a finger hits the screen, this low power mode detects it and switches
to the full left side and bottom side IR LED scanning mode.
Using my IR detector diode method you can hear exactly what is going on.

I'll try giving it a good cleaning. I can't remember the last time I wiped it down...

How does fingerprint scanner compare to iPhone in terms of success rate?

I know that mechanically, the S5 fingerprint scanner works DIFFERENTLY than the iPhone. But I'm curious how it compares in terms of reliability. For many people, the iPhone fingerprint scanner works virtually 100% of the time, so it is very quick and easy to unlock phone.
How is it on the Samsung Galaxy S5? Are you constantly having to reswipe your finger and readjust your grip to get it to work? Or, once you get the hang of it, does it reliably work the first time, every time?
Especially interested in hearing from people who have used both the S5 and an iPhone touch ID.
..
In order for it to ever be as good as the iPhone finger print scanner would they have to make some hardware upgrades or would it just be work with the software?
It's awful. Hardly ever gets mine right and I've scanned multiple fingers multiple times.

The trick is to scan just one finger multiple times. For example, you need to scan your thumb 3 ways - swiping down with the phone laying on a table, swiping down the way you would normally swipe with one hand and swiping down at an angle. This way the scanner will work much better, because it will have registered your finger in all possible situations you might swipe

Yeah I know that and have done. It's just a crap fingerprint sensor. OP is comparing to the iPhone. TouchID works flawlessly.
I second the previous posters comment on Touch ID, it is unbelievably impressive. It's worth the extra configuration time when you choose finger print scanning. My worry is that this may be patented to Apple? If so, is there an alternative for Android?
TouchID is easier to use and more accurate.. Its like put your hand in your pocket and your thump on the button and it just works.. While on S5, you have to swipe and sometimes it doesn't work, won't use it for my lock screen, still would use it for private mode

Part of display nonresponsive to touch

I've had my Nexus 4 for a couple years I believe now, and overall it's been a nice device. I've had occasional issues now and then with software (Camera not available message, random powerdowns) but no hardware issues. A couple weeks ago, part of my display stopped responding. The LCD itself shows everything, there's no bars, no visible cracks in the screen. but the left hand side of the screen, I'd estimate about 1/5 the screen in width, no longer responded to touch. The far far left edge, along the very edge of the display, registered, and on the other side of that 1/5 worked fine. The area that was giving me issues was right about where the 'a' key on the keyboard is in portrait mode -- the only location I could press to get an 'a' registered an 's' as well.
This is all being tested with the developers Show Screen Touches and Show Pointer Information turned on.
Then, the end of this past week, it got worse. The entire left half of the display still shows fine, but almost never responds to touches -- maybe 1 in 100 times it will. Thankfully, I was able to get in one of those times and disable my screen lock. It seems to be able to register as far left as an x value ~418. This means the back button in portrait mode, for example, no longer works. To make me even more confused, it seems to register phantom presses. The device can be lying, powered on on my desk, no touching it, and the display starts showing screen touches -- the most common one I see is right about where the word Google is in portrait on the stock main screen. These will continue indefinitely.
All this to say, I suspect my digitizer has had a mechanical failure. Does that seem a reasonable conclusion to you? I like the four inch form factor of the device, and with most new smartphones getting larger and larger, I'm shying away from changing to another device. I've looked briefly at replacing the digitizer -- it seems you can purchase either the digitizer alone or with the LCD, and that when replacing just the digitizer it's easy to accidentally create problems with the existing LCD. Is that true?
Also, the part about having to use a hair dryer to pull the components apart makes me a little nervous. Screws and cables I can handle, but a hair dryer?

I would say it's most likely a hardware problem with the digitizer. The lcd/digitizer assembly is glued together so it's very difficult to separate the two without damaging the lcd.
Unless you have the tools to separate them properly, it's alot less headache to get the entire assembly already glued together.

Any way to have >4 fingerprints stored?

As per title.
Reason? Sometimes I would like to use different fingers with different orientation.
While I don't do this myself, you can achieve this by using more than one finger to train one of the "slots" on the phone. In other words, use one of your fingers to train up to about 50%, then switch to another finger. I just tried it out on my phone and it did recognize both fingers I used to train a given slot, but that was just a few trial unlocks I did in a more "controlled" way. I don't know what impact it'd have overall on accuracy in the various positions you often will hit the reader with in more "real world" use. Presumably it would to some extent mean it'd be less accurate or more picky, since there's less data about each "actual" finger in each finger "slot."
You can also do more than one orientation of a finger on the same storage slot. For example, Fingerprint one on my phone stores my right thumb horizontally, vertically, and diagonally, so I can hold my thumb in almost any orientation to unlock the phone. Slot # 2 has my right index finger in multiple orientations, etc.
You don't have to use one fingerprint storage location for horizontal thumb, another for vertical thumb, etc.

Problems with the touch screen and fingerprint scanner

Is anyone having issues with either/both the touchscreen or the fingerprint scanner?
Regarding the screen, I went out last night and the phone remained inside my jeans pocket. Was looking through it this morning to find I have 6 sets of 30 burst photos (of the inside of my pocket), a load of single photos (of the inside of my pocket) and a 10 minute video taken inside my pocket! It looks as though the shortcuts on the lock screen have been activated to open the camera but the phone never left my pocket, I never touched the screen so its a little worrying how easy it is to do that!
And on the fingerprint scanner, I'm finding it really slow to unlock the phone on occasion, and many times it will take several attempts to recognise my print - this is especially true if I have any kind of small "contaminant" on my fingers. Slightest bit of sweat or moisture and it won't work. In fact, its really hard to use unless you have completely clean and 100% dry hands. My GF had a Nexus 5X (before it developed bootloop problems and had to be returned) and the scanner on that was pretty much flawless and would recognise prints in whatever conditions.
Anyone else finding these kinds of issues?

Among the other problems, I have one with AOD that tends to disappear even if active.
I also have issue with the fingerprint reader.
Nothing, unfortunately, has changed with the 10L update.
I hope they will do a better work with the next big update promised with the G6 + presentation.

The problem with AOD could be related to the fact that something is covering the proximity sensor. If the sensor is covered AOD won't display.
My fingerprint has no problem, and my screen never unlocked inadvertently.

No, the device stays always on the table with nothing on/near it. This issue is relatively new.
The fingerprint reader for some reason in unable to read nothing so I have to unlock with PIN and restart the device.
I think it's more likely that you accidentally managed to double-press the volume down button and activated the camera that way.
At least you can disable those shortcuts. One of my pet peeves is front-facing home buttons that can turn on the screen, that stick out and are easy to activate in your pocket.
The fingerprint reader seems pretty good to me although I've definitely noticed it doesn't work if my finger is wet. Maybe I'm just happy it works a million times better than my old phone.

Nope, first thing I did when I got the phone was to turn the shortcut keys off - I previously had the G4 and dislike these on that, so turned them off here for the same reason

I have had the camera seem to turn on by itself a few times, but not to the extent that you are describing. My finger print scanner works fine in terms of recognizing my print and unlocking my phone. I have a completely different issue with my finger print scanner though. When I try to clean my fingerprint scanner with a cloth, it triggers the phone to dial 911! It has done it many times from my pocket too. When it did it in my pocket, I could not for the life of me figure out what was triggering the 911 calls. The first few times I didn't even know that it had dialed 911 until 911 dispatch called me back. I finally figured it out one day when I was purposely rubbing the fingerprint scanner with a cloth to clean it, and sure enough, it dialed 911. Sometimes if I just rub it with my bare finger it will dial 911. It's VERY annoying, for me and the 911 operators both I imagine!
