Text message app.... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answers

Im looking for a app to replace my stock message app. I tried go sms, and had issues. Text and mms failing. So im looking for another replacement. Prefer to be able to theme the app. Thanx for any help.

Handcent Next is, hands down, the best 3rd party messaging app.

Wow. Quick response lol. Thanx. I'll check that out.

No problem. Try it. Think you'll like it.

Textra. I've tried many others but keep coming back to that one.

Been using handcent all night, like it a lot so far. Will also try textra. Thanx guys.

Another vote for Textra. It is awesome. You do get ads for the non paid version after a trial period. I used Handcent back a few years ago and did not like it. I have not used the newer version.

Another vote for Textra. It's just so customizable and easy to use. I paid for the premium version.

Textra here too if not using stock.

I've tried handcent, so far it's great. Has what iwanted and it works lol. Going to try textra for a few days now and then decide. Thanx again guys.

How well do you like it?
I noticed the led isn't flashing with it.
I'm a big fan of handcent- been using it for the past year. I love the customize options it offers.

I have used it for quite awhile and really like. I also liked how you could set you default messaging to it on eclair, however have noticed on the Froyo builds it doesn't give me that option (ie... click on stock messaging app and it will open handcent). I also like the customizations that you can do for each contact along with custom notifications for each contact.

my led flashes using handcent. I really like handcent especially for the popup notifications.
I have been using handcent on my last 2 phones. I have never had any problems with it and I love the high level of customization options.
Used it and liked it a lot. I had to ditch it, though, because when my automated work pager would send out texts, it would show two. No idea why, but it was a Handcent issue.
Big fan of Handcent. I really like the popups. Been back and forth between Chomp and Handcent but have been sticking with Handcent.

I was able to set it as default for messaging icon and swipe to text on call log. Using launcherpro btw

I absolutely do not. I don't see what the point is. Tried it and went back to stock Messaging app. Nothing there for me.
Stock app wastes a lot of space with user pics. Plus limited config options.

Tried it and hated it. Never liked the bubble style messaging. I like the stock better, just seems cleaner and easier to read.

Handcent is great. You can change nearly everything, including the chat style. Chat bubbles are not the only option. There is a style that is similar to, but better than, the stock app. The mms shows up in the chat screen unlike the way the stock app does a stupid slide show. Handcent also backs up your mms, even allowing you to select the back up directory. The popup chat window is also very nice. The ablility to respond so easily is extremely useful. At first, the number of config options is overwhelming.
I use launcher pro plus on my phone. I had handcent on my evo and now on my epic. It is far superior to the oem app on both phones. Remember to disable the notifications in the stock app so you don't get double notifications. The nice thing about launcher pro, other than being much better than touchwiz in every way, is that you can set handcent to default for messaging. This completely eliminated the use of the oem app.
Epicly posted using the xda app!
+1 for handcent. Its rad! Something you don't like? There is a config option to change it more than likely.
Only beef is the outragous $6 price for pro. So many options to reset every flash. Fixed this with mybackup pro data restores.

I've tried both but prefer ChompSMS. Look into both, they're very similar.
My wife and I both love it!
It is just so customizable. The free version has worked fine for our needs.

After seeing the advice about the settings, I'm sold on Handcent now. Takes a while to deal with all the customization in there but now that I have it looking more like the stock without the bubbles and white backgrounds it definitely is nice. The pop up on the lock screen is nice, and so is being able to select recipients instead of having to type their names. Way more features than stock.
I've use Handcent on any Android phone I've had and love it
Is there a way to set this as default when clicking the Messaging app in the dock on touchwiz? And I don't mean opening messaging then composing from handcent.

Plenty of sms app in the market.
Slide, chomp, hancent, etc...
Yeah sliding messaging has been my favorite for a bit now. It's $2 but well worth it.
Yes I know that. But I like the modded aosp best

8sms....damn close to aosp.
Thank you that's exactly what I was looking for. I knew there was one out there just couldn't find it.

As a Google Voice user, I use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ianmcdowell.googlevoicemessaging&hl=en Google Voice Messaging and it works great, but it definitely leaves a little to be desired.
I tried the sliding messaging, but for whatever reason it can only do push notifications if you get double notifications. If it fixed that issue I'd definitely want to use it, it looks really nice.

Hangout Alternatives

Hello I was wondering what everyone was using instead of Google's hangouts app for SMS. I am stuck looking for a good alternative. Also I saw an AOSP SMS app with the sliding side bar kind of how hangouts has it now but I can't seem to find it anymore.

Go SMS works well... had tried it earlier...
Sliding messaging
Ninja sms ftw. It is a paid app, but the window is wonderful. Reply without leaving the app youre using is great.

You may try 8SMS
I'm still using the old messaging app, isn't that included in 4.4 rom? (I personally flashed 4.4 over 4.3, so it's still there).

8SMS stand alone messaging app?

Wondering if anyone is using this app as a stand alone for sms/mms and how reliable is it

I've been using it for over a month now and I love it. I couldn't stand the stock messaging app. Even with the various theming available, I hated the way it looked. 8sms has been super reliable for me and I like the look of it so much better. I use the dark theme.

Nova pull down notifications

Is anybody using the swipe down for notifications? My phone freezes when I try to use it and I had accepted it on the accessibility tab.

Shouldn't freeze, but it will be super slow to pull down. That is a marshmallow bug that Nova's developer had submitted to Google. If it's actually freezing that's different and might be anice issue with something specific to your setup.

I'm not sure why it's happening either. Maybe I should just reset my nova launcher. The only times its worked is when I've been able to root my past phones with a similar setup on my Moto x pure, and nexus 6p.

This happened to me but then I updated to Nova Launcher beta apk and it cleared that issue. I think I had to register on Nova Launcher Google plus page.

Yep, downloading the beta fixed it for me as well. Thanks!
