NRD90M - how to update - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I updated my 6P to Nougat via the Beta program (I quickly unsubscribed once I upgraded)
My device is completely stock, no root or anything...
Now when i do a check for updates it always shows nothing available... I am stuck on NRD90M...
I was looking at the guides and found the factory images and the OTA images...
I have no idea which path to take here... which package should i use to properly update my device... I would prefer the method that does not wipe my device, as I do not want to go through that hassle...
Can i just grab NBD90X?
Please help, anyone....

Use Heisenberg's pinned flashing guide and download the latest factory image from Google. As long as you follow the instructions you'll be fine, as they cover all scenarios. If you keep it stick, you should be able to take OTA updates from then on.

I also have NRD90M, but im afraid of doing anything to my phone through a computer, I just hope that there can be an update through the settings instead of downloading through my laptop. There not really a clear explanation on how to manually update, reason why i don't want to manually update.
Is there a chance that i won't be stuck on NRD90M? I'm willing to wait, but if there are reasons why they won't push updates through NRD90M then ill have no choice but to manually update. Someone please explain

Not sure what you're looking for. There is an absolutely complete guide to manually updating (flashing) your phone at http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928 and it covers all scenarios, also with links to root, install TWRP and install flashable zips. If you follow this guide to the tee, you won't have many problems. Once you get past the nerves of setting up ADB/Fastboot drivers, you'll have total control of your phone.
There is no NRD90M. All factory images from Google are available at https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images?hl=en and T, U and X are the three monthly Nougat releases. If you are on stock you should get monthly notifications, but if you are modified you won't be able to install them.

I assume I follow #13 in his tutorial?
Plus if I do this, will it delete everything in my phone?

I had the NRD90M also and I just grabbed the 90X and flashed it manually adb from Google's website. You should be fine it won't hurt the phone.

I took a look at the guide...
Currently my bootloader is locked, so if i want to flash the factory image I am hosed, since I need to unlock the bootloader, which will wipe out my personal data...
My take from the guides is that an Full OTA image is what I need, since I dont want to unlock my bootloader.
My question now is, from the google developer site, there is a section for factory images, and a section for OTA images...
Are the OTA images on the google developer site full images, or are they incremental?

Answering my own question here....
I can confirm that you can use ADB to load the OTA package from the google developer site...
I grabbed the latest one, and followed the instructions for loading the OTA package... I didnt time it, but it was probably around 5 minutes to do it. I did not lose any data...

To tack on to this thread.....
I'm having a hell of a time with 90x. It keeps turning off wifi and Bluetooth randomly(I've read a few others are having this problem too). Can I flash over the top of what I have (I'm stock and unrooted). Is there any benefit to doing that?
Thanks

[Q] How can I restore so that I can install from ota?

I rooted when i got the nexus 10 but would much rather not have a rooted device if it means i can install ota instead of jumping through hoops every time i need to update. I tried unrooting the device but the ota install still won't work. It seems it is because i have twrp or some other kind of custom recovery that was put on during rooting that is getting in the way.
I am running 4.4.2 and I have had an ota update for 4.4.3 in my notifications for several months. Every time I try to find a way to install the ota I spend hours looking on the internet and can never find an answer, only instructions on how to manually update, etc. But i really just want to be able to install from the ota! Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much for your reply. Sorry if I didn't post in the right area.
I am obviously not so savvy with this stuff but since I am in this situation I really want to fix it correctly without bricking my device or wasting a lot of time and effort. Therefore, I am about to ask a few questions. If it is easier than spending time answering my questions, perhaps you can just direct me to where I can find very clear instructions on doing what I am trying to do. I am very appreciative of your time and effort. Thank you.
I am a bit confused by the above link's directions. He posts a link to factory images and then says to download android sdk and add platform tools directory to PATH and then flashall.bat while n10 is in boot loader.
Does this mean that I should first download a factory image? Which one? (i am currently running 4.4.2, so should it be this one?)
Once the factory image is downloaded, if i follow the instructions above, by doing "flashall.bat" does this find the factory image and apply it? Does it need to be in a specific folder on my mac?
when i googled instructions for adding platform tools directory to PATH for mac yosemite, I found these instructions: http://codexpi.com/add-android-adb-path-mac-os-x-yosemite/
Are these the correct instructions?

[Q] Bricked by Nexus (and I'm not a techie)

Hi everybody.
Okay I'm not a techie. I managed to root my nexus 4 running android 5.0.1 with kingo root. I wanted the OTA 5.1 UPDATE, so unrooted, tried the OTA and it failed.
I've installed minimal adb and fastboot but after various goes I'm no further on. Is my phone ruined?
Under system recovery I'm now showing LMY470. If I try and reboot I just get the google display.
PLEASE - can anybody help (I go on holiday on Sunday and really need my phone!)
Hope somebody can help
Rob
Just flash the factory image with fastboot.
Download the factory image, extract it. In there is a flash-all batch file
Boot into the bootloader and connect your device to the pc
Double click on the flash-all
Note, this will wipe your device.

Your phone is not ruined.... You may need to have to flash the image again. You might want to try using the "Nexus Root Toolkit"
Just search for it It will walk you through the whole process. You might also search for the SkipSoft Android Tool Kit.
I hope that helps Let us know how you get on

When you say you "unrooted", how did you do so? I have found with 5.+ that in order for the OTA to not fail when you have been rooted, requires that you flash the stock images for the current version, as opposed to Factory Resetting, and then you will be able to install the OTA update without it failing. Has to do with out the updater checks the entire partition and not pieces, which is a new method. If one byte of data is out of place on System partition, it OTA fails.

Monthly OTA updates from Google

This is new: http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/08/05/google-announces-new-update-policy-for-nexus-devices-including-monthly-security-patches-for-3-years-and-major-otas-for-2-years-from-release/
That would be a real pain for us rooted users....but I guess the security patches are a good thing
A real pain...

No pain, it literally takes minutes to flash stock, update, root using the toolkit. [emoji1]
I wonder if there are again going to be separate builds for each carrier.

That's a good point...maybe?
I wish there was an app for rooted users to get notifications about these updates (and maybe offer a way to download a flashable zip as well?)
I got a Nexus 6 because I wanted to be able to always have access to a stable, current version of Android. I didn't realize that OTA updates wouldn't work out of the box with rooted devices though.
Would be nice to have some method to get back that functionality!

Both those things ignore the whole point of what I brought up.
I'm saying it would be nice if there was an equivalent automatic notification/update process for rooted users.

That is the equivalent. Stay stock or manually update. Rooted users don't worry about such a thing, since changing ROMs and adding various features are a common occurrence.

Rooted users don't care about convenience? I dunno about you, but I'm rooted, and I still would prefer to do repetitive/manual processes as little as possible...
You can be a rooted user just to use rooted apps, and not care about trying a different ROM every week. In which case, it would be nice to have the same benefits of automatic updates as stock users. Not sure why you seem to be against the idea?
I get that you think it is unnecessary, but I'm saying I would prefer it as an option. So, maybe we can just leave it at that?

It is possible. Get notification from XDA users down load ota file someone has probably posted someplace plug in to computer and side load. It usually 1 week faster than waiting your turn to receive ota from carrier's

I don't think this will work. If your N6 is rooted, you can't sideload the OTA file. Your phone will need to be stock (unrooted) to apply the OTA.
You could wait for somebody to publish a flashable zip, or just download the new factory images and use fastboot to flash the new system.img over your existing phone, and reroot.

Isn't there a chance of losing the ability to reroot with this method though? I've been waiting for users to publish flashable zips for this reason, but maybe that is not necessary?

Recently I used both methods just to see if there were differences.
Both had the same results. That means among others that my settings were gone.
- LCD_density defaults (384)
- WiFi interval defaults (was 200)
- Needed to flash Black Google Now Launcher and uninstall Google.app updates to get my black background back.

When you flash a new factory image I'm assuming you flash each partition and avoid flashing the data partition (dirty flash) ?
Does google always post a whole new image for each ota? What about the carrier variants like tmobile? Is there a new image for each ota?
Thanks. I'm not a N6 owner yet but I plan to be stock rooted and am trying to determine the ota update process in advance.
@NCguy
"When you flash a new factory image I'm assuming you flash each partition and avoid flashing the data partition (dirty flash) ?" Correct
Does google always post a whole new image for each ota?" Yes
"What about the carrier variants like tmobile? Is there a new image for each ota?" There has been a T-Mobile specific factory image for each OTA.
Here are the factory images > https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images

This seems to happen to done some people, no idea why though. You can update manually pretty easily, just flash the factory images for the latest build. I have instructions in my guide:

Question if I manually update will that have any interference with future OTA's? As in would I have to manually flash from here on out?

I'd suggest unlocking the bootloader anyway. If an OTA fails on you you'll be soft bricked and there'll be absolutely nothing you can do about it with a locked bootloader, apart from sending it for repair. It's happened to a few people.

It's worth it, I know I'd rather spend the time setting my phone up again than having to send the thing away because it got bricked.
I'm also stuck on January's patch so I wanted to know if I'll get February, then March or does the ota go straight to the latest security patch? If I decide to manually flash it, would I have to flash the February patch first or go straight to they latest one?

If you decide to flash manually, you have two options.
1. Flash the factory images (via fastboot). With this option you can just download the factory images for the latest build and flash them, no need to go through each update to get there.
2. Flash the OTA zips (via stock recovery and adb sideload). This option means you need to flash the OTA zips in order. But since you're on the January build it would only be two zips: the MMP29P --> MMB29Q zip, then the MMB29Q -- > MHC19I zip.
Personally, I'd just flash the factory images with fastboot, it's easier. You do need an unlocked bootloader though, but in my opinion you should have an unlocked bootloader regardless.

Just getting time to sit down and do this, I've gone and got all the SDK tools setup in the general thread you linked, and I know i have to unlock bootloader but for the factory image does it matter if I do post #10 or #11? With the phone being 4 days old would flashing without wiping be a big issue?

Ah, but I think I answered my own question, won't unlocking the bootloader wipe all data anyway?

Should I root my 6P?

Hi!
A month ago I bought a second-hand Nexus 6P and I ordered a silver casing because the black color that brought didn't like to me.
When I opened it and change the housing the guarantee was logically lost, and now I wondered if it was worth to root it because I don't lose anything.
I don't want to change the ROM. I'd like flashing MODs to improve sound quality or increase the audio output voltage (I don't know if that's possible).
The problem is that I don't know how to do it with my laptop, which has Windows 10. I have always done on Windows 7 and I know the drivers on Windows 10 are a mess. Also, I don't know how to do things like flashing firmware or RRU through ADB and fastboot so, should I root it?
I would appreciate your help.
Thank you!

You don't lose your warranty when rooting Nexus devices anyway, so even if you hadn't opened your device up it wouldn't have had a problem. There's no mess with drivers on the Windows 10, really. Extract ADB and Fastboot from the Android SDK and follow one of the many guides available in the general section. It's easy enough to unlock and root the device and/or change the firmware too if you had to. Just read the available guides.

Exactly! It's very simple. I did have issues with the drivers on my Windows 10 computer but it was a matter of uninstalling and reinstalling them.

Thank you!

You have nothing to lose, so why not?! Take a look at my guide, it should have everything you need:

Thank you for your replies @Quasar @GallardosEggrollShop and @heisenberg! Now I have only two questions:
1. System updates by Google support other recoveries apart from Android original recovery (I'd like to install TWRP)?
2. When I unlock the bootloader I'll lose all my data (factory reset)?
Thank you!

1. No, other recoveries cannot flash OTA updates. You can't apply an OTA if you're rooted anyway, you need to flash the factory images to update.
2. Yes, unlocking the bootloader completely wipes the device so back up your personal data (photos etc) first.
Plus, in my opinion... It's a Nexus, why would you buy a Nexus if you weren't going to root it? At least to see whats out there and you can always go back to stock if you wish.
Nexus + XDA = Happy Flashing!

Ok, im going to root my 6P finally, thank you all! Before the start, I want to solve a couple of questions and then I'll root it!
1. How can I update the Nexus stock ROM when I have TWRP? (Firmware, security updates or major updates like Nougat)
2. It's true that when my bootloader is unlocked, every time I boot the phone a message saying that my bootloader has been unlocked appears? In that case, Is it possible to remove permanently?
3. Is necessary make S-OFF like the HTC phones? I've never had a different phone of HTC, this is my first phone that's not an HTC.
Thanks!

1. I already answered this question in the post you quoted, you flash the factory images. It's all in my guide that I linked you to earlier.
2. Yes you will have a warning message, and no you can't remove it.
3. S-off is specific to HTC so no need to worry about that.
I have only one question.
Is it completely necessary to flash regularly new hboot or firmware versions or I can use a non-stock rom with no worries about that?

No such thing as hboot, that's only HTC. You need to make sure your bootloader and radio are up to date, and you need to make sure you flash the correct vendor image to suit the ROM.

Thank you VERY much! I am so lost since I don't have an HTC for first time and it's so good that the only two things I have to keep up to date were bootloader and radio. Only two questions, and sorry for being that heavy ?:
How can I get the latest bootloader and radio (a thread in XDA or something)?
How can I flash them? Will I lose my data every time I need to update them?
Thank you!

Have you read my guide that I've mentioned a few times? There are instructions for flashing the bootloader/radio/vendor there. Look in the section for flashing the factory images but only flash those specific files. And my index contains downloads for the factory images, which is where you can get the files you need.

Yes! I've read it and I have my PC ready to root my device but I'm so insecure and I need to have things clearly before I start to make things.
Thank you, again, for your help. And I hope this is my last question:
Now that I know that the things I need to keep up to date are bootloader, vendor and radio, and in your guide you say that flashing a factory image I'll lose all my data, will it happens to me when i update one of those things (only vendor/bootloader/radio)?
Thanks!

Flashing the factory images only wipes your data if you:
A) Flash the userdata.img
B) Format userdata
Neither of those are necessary for you so you're fine.
Rooting? Darn yes! :good:
The Nexus line is so sweet for easy rooting and also for returning to complete stock if so desired.
I have used Heisenberg's extensive thread many times...it's the best thread on XDA bar none! :highfive:
