I think Elephone is going very fast with ROMs for the P9000. For the moment there is no 100% stable and working ROM: not even the stock official one.
So yes, thanks for the effort with porting Nougat, but I hope it is not going to be part of the "almost ready" list.
No offense intended in this post.
Whats with that Gingerbread search bar??? lol

You just summed up my frustrations with this phone. Plenty of projects, none of which are stable.
Side note: I hope they get rid of that terrible bin icon in the task switcher.

Yep.
I bought this phone because it is powerful and very low price. I was of course aware of the poor ROM support, but I thought at the moment that it was only a matter of time: Elephone said that they were going to release the kernel, and there was that first preliminary port of CM13.
Now not a single ROM works. I am very interested in CM13, but the development is stopped for a time already. I would like to help (I have wide experience in developing, although never with android), but I can't even post in CM13 thread because my account is too young yet. Aaargh.
Well, I guess best strategy for the moment is simply to wait.
and here i was about to start looking into porting the jiayu s3 7.0 build, think ill just wait for the official version
also im not sure what issues people are facing that are that bad with the current CM13 build. ill admit there are a few bugs on mine, HDR photos crash the app, GPS is horribly inaccurate and all over the place despite all attempts to fix it (almost certainly down to the hardware at this point) and the proximity sensor can be a bit dodgy often leading to you pressing buttons with your face while in call, but this may be worse than it really is due to the rather cracked and battered screen protector thats on it. other than that its been a perfectly functional daily driver for me.

I think the problem is also we, the end user. I'm pretty sure a normal person would never think about buying this phone, most people tend to buy the phones they know by name: Samsung, HTC, LG...Tell someone you know you have an Elephone, they don't know what you mean.
People in this sub forum usually know why they bought the P900 and what they had to expect. Look at the phones I had: I knew this phone couldn't be complete software wise and I bought it in hope that CM13 makes it complete and even if it would work I knew I wouldn't get 100% satisfied. Honestly, I'm surprised how good Deepflex made my experience with his CM13 port but for now in this state of development of all roms (and even stock) it's the confirmation I wanted from the beginning: this phone is cheap for a reason and it will never be as good as 400$+ phones, no matter how many roms the devs will release here and even IF Nougat drops you won't be getting this "full experience" you wanted.

With all due respect, I think it is very unfair to blame the consumer for the failures of this device. It's advertised on Amazon as being "smooth and stable" and that just isn't true.
Elephone have decided to make the priority sales numbers rather than happy customers and it's likely going to result in the failure of the company as their brand develops a bad name.
While the adoption of this device seems to be successful, the failing user experience is what will prevent any possibility of loyal customers. Development malpractices such as releasing a "stable" CM 13 ROM which doesn't detect a large number of working SIM cards is straight up deceitful to customers. I would go as far as to say false advertising is taking place.

The 10 post rule no longer applies I don't think? You should be able to post in the development forum. What error message do you get when trying to post?
I do not have an Elephone (yet?) only experience with other China phone. So bear with me if I talk nonsense.
I thought my Zenfone fo example is not really worse than Samsung and Co. It's just that Samsung is much bigger and developer support much better. So it's actually not Samsung delivering a solution for a problem.
Another issue is the "update" pattern by Google. How can a firmware mature if Google publishes new versions often?
will we get android 7.1?
I disagree with everyone here. The hardware in the P9000 is easily comparable to its Samsung counterpart. At a quarter of the price tag. The trade off? Bad software (easily overcome thanks to Jonny, deepflex, skeleton1911, and others), and bad customer service. Again. Easily overcome. As far as android N, I will wait until cm14 and enjoy beta testing with the 2nd elephone I buy with all the money I saved by not buying a Samsung and risking it exploding in my pocket.
I'm a slightly more normal user - I don't mod phones anymore, and am content to just use them, too much else to do.
But I have to disagree with a lot of the negativity here: My P9000 is a great phone - very rarely crashes, works well and reliably, and has received many ROM updates. The camera is good enough, the GPS works well enough, better in HERE than Google maps, battery could be better, but I get a day out of it, so that's about average. My previous phone was a P8(?), which was rubbish, prior to that I had a Nokia N8, which was great, but I kept killing the camera module and the earpiece through shock and dust damage. I'm hard on on phones, they get dropped and exposed to dust and moisture. The P9000 has taken it all and not even stuttered.
And now it's getting nougat? Well done elephone, better support than a LOT of manufacturers. Do they still make the P9000? If they could sort out Androidpay then I'd consider the phone faultless.
w
I have to agree with Wildefalcon.
I am also a "normal" user. I have previously had Star and Zopo phones which were not great and never received any updates.
We must have had 3 or 4 updates so far, with Nougat to come.
After my experience with my previous phones, this is beyond my expectations!
I have found the GPS and camera to be okay and yes, I would like to have Android Pay too.
The one disappointment I have had was with the faulty sim tray which caused the sim cards to log out. Neither the seller nor Elephone were prepared to replace it free of charge and I ended up paying US$10 for a replacement.
Overall, I think for the price, including the additional $10, this is an excellent phone.
I appreciate others may have had problems and perhaps I have just been lucky.

Dear Friends,
My suggestion is that Samsung Note is not worth buying,
Reasons being
1. EMMC Bug can is not fixed and still they (Samsung) has not even accepted fully that they have this error. they have not addressed that they will be providing the solution or not. So rooting and customization will be hard for general users.
2. Forget about rooting, Still with the stock rom itself Phone reboots may times without any reasons.
3. Software hangs even with Stock rom and only way is to reboot it manually.
4. Very poor Wifi network, frequently turn off and turn on WIFI without any reason.
5. Samsung do not hear the voice of customer. very bad services.
6. especially in Indian type of consumer market buying Samsung Note at the present rate is not worth.
7. No widget for music player, 1X4 or 1X5 Dual Clock.
8. Touch Pen Problems not addressed
9. For the money its not worth with Bug in EMMC.
Never Never Never Buy Samsung Products. untill they are hit with sales they do not hear the customer Voice. One fine day they will also be like Nokia.

2 Things that made my Note invincible:
ROM: Kingdroid v3.0
Kernel: Speedmod K3-3
Nuff said.
I'm using my Note for more than half a year, I tried many GB roms stock and custom, all ICS chinease leaks, and now last ICS custom. I never got any of your problems, I did wipe on ALL types of kernels and firmwares for Note. Never got any bricks.
You've just got factory marriage Note. Go to service center and change it for normal. Or maybe you just unskilled noob and deceiving here.
You right only with 5 point. But it's not only with Samsung. Almost all manufactors are the same, they really love money.

i was on kindroid v3.0 and i don't like it,some times was laggy, change the kernel and same thing...change vith cryskelo and same thing, about a week i use Modded Lite AlBa LQ3 Final Stage and its greath:good:
my note is still yet to arrive but from what i've heard there are also issues with echoing (person you are talking to hears their own voice) as well as severe black crush/clipping issues with video playback.
I have zero issues with my note (running RocketROM v7). As a matter a fact my buddy just received his GsIII (at&t) today and after comparing the two very closely the SIII is not much better. He even said that if he could have bought a n7000 through at&t and set it up like mine he would have much rather had the Note. Mine Note is just as fast and smooth as his SIII in every way with better functionality due to the custom rom provided by eybee1970! This is just my experience....

Dear friends/ Samsung lovers
No doubt there are many phones out with the better features with Bug free. paying few more $$ or euros. So my suggestion is that better go with SGN or HTC one X rather than going to SGN. As Android is an open source, and customization is what Google has given more Importance for which it is at top place compared to the Iphone.
Having bug free phones is what we need to select rather than falling in pit to the buggy phone.
finally its all up to you to take the decision. I hope all will take the better decision. If you think rooting itself an sin or always working on the defective phone then their is no meaning in paying so much to this Phone at least.
Goodbye SamsungNotes.
Never once has my Note hanged in stock rom or custom roms, Its just a amazing feeling to have a note in your hand

Pretty sure threads like these are unecessary.
The first thing before I bought the Note was, I borrowed the Note from a friend and put it in my shirt's pocket. The Note cooly sat there. That is it. I bought it.I cant carry a tablet, where ever I go. It is the size of the Note that keeps the members of the Forum together. You can call the Note- a phone, or a tablet or computer or even a Note. It could become a perfect computer, could it accomodate 128Gb sd card. Nothing beats a Note.
Had a note for last 2 months, update to official ICS Rom and i had no problem whatsoever,, except the USB wake lock which is solved easily by rebooting the phone after connecting charger or usb. Working perfectly and i love it.:good:
Nokia has great customer service. They just made some very bad decisions, manufactured hundred phone models that were basically identical and were left behind on smartphone field which basically landed a decisive hit on them. And now with Windows Phone they might just die... don't get me wrong, i love Windows Phone, but sales are not that good, and even though Lumia was the fastest selling Nokia device, they are still in deep crisis. Anyway, wish the best for Nokia, hope they'll recover.
As for the list you provided...ok, with the eMMC bug i agree, but i shouldn't buy Samsung device because there is no music widget ( with literally thousands of free apps on the market ) ? You serious ?
And i don't really care about their customer service... no customer service really cares - good service pretends that they do, but they never did and never will, wake up...
0 issues with my Note, The brickbug is a put off, but theres a fix for it.
you find me an issue that doesnt have a fix and il agree with you !!
you cant open a thread like this and disrespect the Note infront of 1000's of Note users, If you dont like it, thats fine, get something else.
But slating it like you did is really going to put people off wanting to get this phone, The phone is awesome, Development kicks ass.
You probably dont deserve the Note anyway, Theres a million solutions to your problems, surely if you did a bit of research you'd find one.
<3 haters.
I had issues with my Note when I updated with the OTA ICS update. Kept crashing and such, even from a clean Gingerbread. So I reverted back to Gingerbread for the minute until the ICS release matures a little. You will get this with virtually every major new release of the phone FW.
It does not detract from the fact this is a superb phone and I won't change it for anything at the minute.
i suppose every1 has their own likings
so mabbe u meant note isnt worth buying for yourself
bt i think 10 million other ppl dont share th same opinion :cyclops:
its ur choice good luck with tht

I'm pretty happy with my galaxy note, there were no problems when I was UN rooted with GB. Tried several GB roms, kernels etc after rooting with no problems. Shifted to ICS, with LP1 repack, emmc bug news broke out. Shifted safely to aosp roms without problems. Now using touch wiz based roms and very happy with it.
Excellent battery life.
Non existent lag.
Awesome roms available.
Good developer support.
Basically it's a fine device, learn to do stuff with it after reading on xda. Enjoy your purchase.

Send a mail to Hugo and Xiaomi officials ask them about kernel sources,
If they refuse to release it don't buy it.
Without sources mediatek devices are pathetic, Xiaomi Redmi Note is still stuck with buggy KitKat, and will stuck forever, same will happen with you.
So ensure sources, without sources even xda will not help.
Best of luck !!

This is not for Redmi Note 3, every device has diff hw although CPU is same , s you need your drivers from Xiaomi.
Ask Xiaomi for source, and they will not provide.
Don't fall in Xiaomi's trap.

So whats the trap.
Get a good device for 200 bugs? Okay it would be better with all thedriver sources released but it is Kind of a flGship killer.
AMD what you expect for that price. A device that beats the crap out of an IPhone 6s?
I need a new Smartphone ( my nexus 5 fell into the water, it still works but slowly dies) and you dont get a better bang for the buck right now. And I think we will get the driver source soon.

You won't be disappointed
Hi, (gold, 32gb, redmi note3 5.0.2,MIUI7
MUI 77.0.11.0 215 EURO with shiping)
I will try to give you my feedback, it's my own personal view of the redmi note 3, first some background:
I'm a tech guy, i started using android with one of the first HTC Desire Bravo, i used to root my phones, flash roms, try, optimise as much as possible.
I have brought this phone for my wife, who had previously two Samsung S4, since redmi note3 is dual SIM, it work out quite nice.
I own a Samsung Note 4 , and i will compare the redmi note3 32gb fairly.
the phone costed me 215EUR, it's a flagship, and for that price it's very cheap!
the phone look beautiful, it has an aluminium body, the finition is perfect, the gold (champagne) color is very nice. the aluminium body is very sleepery.
it lack a SD card, which will force you to take the 32gb model (hello 2016)
battery is non removable, but it's more than 4000mAH, it hold with 2 sim cards and full backlight a full day
LCD would be rated 4.5/5 , not the best quality, but almost.
NO Screen protection, honestly if your phone is falling from time to time, do not buy this phone, the LCD will die, buy a housing to get some grip.
the phone is fast for normal apps, messengers, Instagram, phone apps (dialler, phone-book, calendar)
The camera is 13MB pixel in 4/3 format, it's a 10MB pixel in 16/9 format, the camera is not really good, btw i don't understand why xiaomi doesn't set the camera immediately for best quality, you had to go and set both camera by yourself.
same for front camera, not really good, it's a 5MB at 4/3 format, and 3MB on 16/9.
MUI work good, it's fast, some notifications from time to time never appear, i didn't figure out why yet.
Honestly for me that a great phone, because i don't care about the camera and i use my phone for work, but since it's for my wife, she like to do pictures, selfies, and that phone is no good at that point, her old Samsung S4 is doing much better pictures, and that is kinda the deal breaker.
I would recommend this phone to people who don't care about the cameras, it's cheap, look crazy nice, DUAL SIMS.
IF you like to take pictures of any kind, don't waste your time, it is no good.
IF your phone is likely to fall, avoid it, no screen protection, or at least buy some housing.
I like MUI btw, my gf doesn't like it to much, but she doing better every day.
The charger is trash, it's a 0.35mAH, it charge 5% per hour LOL, never seen worse, get your old charger back, or buy a new one immediately.
I forgot to say in my review that the phone is not rooted, but there is a app .apk that root the device in 2min easy and friendly(it''s in chiness, but keep hitting the green button),
Best regards guys!

mui 77.0.11.0
Hi,
i have got my note 3 before christmass. With the same ROM 77.0.11.0 as Lisendra. Got it in a GDA for 199€ with DHL shipping, cover and tempered glass screen protection.
The "original" rom had some bugs, I was unable to sincronize the contacts from gmail etc.
A guy on italian forum helped me with a hint about a custom ROM, the first one was a developer, the second one latest stable 7.0.22.0
It doesnt support OTA, so you have to use flashtool, but the flashing is pretty easy, it comes with ROOT and it is cleaned from the scrap chinese apps.
[ROM] [Stable] SphinX V1d - MIUI7 V7.0.22.0 Global, Multi Language, SuperSU
Since I installed that one, the phone does greatly. There are already guides to unlock bootloader, but to instal this ROM you dont need to do so.
For that money it is really a great phone. My old Galaxy S3 seems to be a toy, compared to this. Signal reception is very good (althought LTE band 20 is missing, so i dont have LTE where I live, but in the towns downhill it works pretty good in LTE). GPS (gps, glonass and the chinese satelites) locks really fast.
With 1 SIM the phone is able to work for 2 full days (until the evening of the second day - with the screen ON for about 5 hours).
After 2 weeks of experience, I would buy it again.
So I found leaks of the MIUI 8 for our phone (one was 6.6.12 and one was 6.6.14). Both are in Chinese and I guess we will have to wait until 17th June to see the full version. Unfortunately by the posts on miui forums and the build.prop it looks like we won't be getting Android M anytime soon.
What is even worse (at least as I see it) we will be staying on the old Android 5.0.2 (not even 5.1) and to my knowledge we don't have any useful sources for building Marshmallow ROMs.

The 6.6.12 should be a bit better
Woooow that's awesome.... (pls..) I think we will never get Marshmallow because of Mediatek closed sources
Remember that HTC A9 has the same Mediatek chipset and somehow received Marsmellow so it is not impossible at most. Let's hope that Xiaomi wont leave this phone without ANY system update, otherwise milions of users will be pissed off and may think twice befor buying their next device.

what version of miui 8? 8.6.6.12 or 6.6.14
this is the last time i bought a phone with mediatek or xiaomi. i hate miui but because they don't release the source codes developers cannot produce decent custom roms. The camera of CM romsis awful andAosp is also not very good. most important is allowing double tap to wake but they don't even allow us this feature to have. My power button reacts really bad because i have to push is so often. I don't care if I have Miui 8, 9, 20 or anything. They should at least update to Marshmallow so we can have some progress. It is so annoying. We live in the year 2016 and there is no real communication or information comming from xiaomi to the users. This is so sad and annoying
they talk too much about MIUI8 , but still using 5.0.2? what's wrong with xiaomi?
even they don't want to release kernel source, so it is small chance for someone to build CM13

HTC A9 has Snapdragon 617, not Mediatek processor.
I think it should be pretty clear by now that if excellent 3rd party ROM support is really important to you, you should steer clear of the Xiaomi+Mediatek combination. That combination produces an amazing price+performance ratio, and is almost unbeatable at that. However, with such low costs and margins, it is unrealistic to expect the kind of development/support that exists for the more expensive devices (i.e., you get what you pay for).
Personally, I am not complaining about lack of sustained development support. I do not like the fact that we are stuck with 5.02 - but I went for the RN2 with my eyes wide open (and probably so did most people who chose to buy it). Battery life could be better - but the same goes for expensive iPhones. The camera could be better, but it is good enough for most things. The device is reasonably well specced, very cheap, reasonably fast, and there are some reasonably good cooked ROMs in this forum. It is an excellent medium-range device, at an entry-level price and with an entry-level support. Premium, it is most certainly not. So what is it realistic to expect? There is always the OnePlus 3 ...
Bottom line: anyone who is really keen on excellent 3rd party ROM support should go for a Snapdragon device. It will cost you more, but you will get what you pay for.

So you are saying ''well you didn't pay much so you have no right to complain''? Sorry but I think we can expect a descent communication and that we get informed properly from xiaomi. Mm was annouced month ago but till today nobody knows for sure if we will get it. And allowing gestures is not too much to ask for. The device is technically able for that but we don't get this feature or the codes to develope it. I had a cubot x9. It was cheaper than the rn2 but it had this feature. And it was a MTK device too. I'm not that much that it has to offer all that a 700$ device does.

My point is that I am realistic in my expectations. Having a cheaper Cubot that does different (or more) things is beside the point. We bought a cheap phone with a particular ROM installed. I did not expect to be able to change that ROM, or for it to be updated frequently (or even at all). If I could not have lived with what it came with, I would not have bought it. For every person here who wants to change his ROM, there are millions who do not know what a ROM is, or who could not care less. For every person here who would like kernel sources (I certainly would), there are tens of millions who have no idea what a kernel is, and who really do not care. That is why someone can sell the phone so cheaply. By all means, complain if you must - but I doubt that anyone in China is listening!

Kimovil is a great site in terms of being an index of phones and tablets. However, the information provided is often lackluster and sometimes even wrong, unfortunately. I find devicespecifications.com and china-prices.com to be more reliable.
Got mine yesterday... it's like a toy VS the Mi Mix... performances are very poor and the UI is a stock, at all with just a few customizations.
Got mine a few days ago... the Mi Mix is indeed a better phone in every way but it also cost 2-3 times more.
That said, like many of the Chinese phones out there today, it advertises a lot, delivers mediocre performance and features.
For the money, its a nice looking phone, totally stock android.
Terrible camera, very heavy (may be the heaviest smartphone I've ever used).
Slippery as heck - how on earth can any company release a phone especially one that is as hard to hold as the Alpha and not have any cases available for them??
After years of using so many flagships ie Galaxy Note 3, 5, S7 Edge, Nexus 6P, Pixel, Huawei Mate 9m P9, LG G4 V10 V20, Mi Mix, as well as tons of Japanese market models (I live in Japan), I've been trying out some of these more budget friendly models and as you all know they are not all created equally but all their manufacturers try to market unbelievable features for the price.
While they perform admirably in some cases I've learned to deal with many bugs, QA issues, and others surprises.
So far the Maze isn't bad especially for the money. It has its quirks and bugs but along with the other phone I'm using as dual daily drivers now (Umidigi Z1 Pro)... I have been getting by... lol.

How does it surprise you the phone is heavy? All information was readily available.
I agree that the camera performance isn't that great - need to mess around with manual settings to get proper shots or wait for further OTA updates (didn't they promise Android O on Facebook? We'll see what happens with that).
Should the cases have been ready before launch? Yes.
In Maze's defense, you can say it's still a new company - the Alpha is just the second product in the company's portfolio. Considering being a new player, Maze has done well so far and what I like is the company's isn't pushing 2-3 new phones every other month, which - hopefully - means the current portfolio of products will receive OTA updates and be maintained.

Thanks for the reply!
I never said the weight was a surprise. I'm just stating my observation. It is the heaviest phone I have used and its slippery!
For a new company the quality is actually very good... some other names who have been around longer could learn a thing or two.
As I said, I'm getting by with it as my daily... though would feel much better if I had a case!
Have you had issues with the adaptive brightness? I'm hoping its something they can fine tune in the next update.... slow to respond to lighting changes if at all.... and in pitch darkness it still does not go all the way down.

By the way thanks to Palm Trees for taking the time to put up all those tests. It really helps people get a non biased view of performance.
I hope you don't mind if I add a few more observations that people might find useful since there is so little info on the web besides the promotional press.
- Notifications work on the Alpha - as some of you can probably relate to, not all phones deliver notifications timely and reliably - but the Alpha does. (running my Z1 Pro at the same time sometimes see the same notifications come 10 min later or not at all)
- Bluetooth is reliable and stays connected. Currently paired to my LG Watch Urbane 2nd and its solid.
- GPS is acceptable which is more than many phones can provide (ie I had a Oneplus 3t before, and the GPS was garbage... slow to connect and could not stay connected and totally inaccurate - which is too bad cause I loved the 3t). The Alpha GPS locks on but there is a bit of drift here and there even in wide open circumstances. I test phones vigorously for GPS as the tall buildings and expressway ramps in Tokyo prove to be a great challenge and at the same time I test them in the suburbs where I live and there is much less interference. (honestly the Umi Z1 Pro has really good GPS!)
-Wifi range is below average. I'm 1m from my router and can't even get full bars. 10-15m away and throughput already starts failing.... not good.

Question is when will cases come out??
I have a hard time leaving a new toy on the bench so I matched the dimensions to another phone here in Japan and am using that case though the camera lenses are covered (which is fine cause the camera is not usable for me anyway).

got my Alpha a few days ago. been looking for a way to root it. none of the one click rooters work.
anyone have any insight into whether this phone will get rooted soon? does root have to be developed for each phone separately or can they be ported over etc.?
If we could get a working TWRP RECOVERY, it would be easy to Root the maze alpha...

Just an information for all who wants to flash the firmware or wants to port a TWRP recovery, the stockrom you'll find on needrom as maze alpha it's wrong!
This is doogee mix firmware!
Some stupid joke for the uploader!? Don't know.
I wrote an email to mazemobile about the wrong firmware an needrom.
They answered, that they don't upload this rom themselves! Maybe they will upload the stockromm on mazemobile.com but they don't know when....It's hard work..... Lol
So it will not possible to port a TWRP and impossible to root the maze alpha next time!
Sell it if you a root user!

Guys,
Anyone knows how to fix the very low intensity of the vibration. I can't feel it in my pocket and I miss calls...
Anyone succeeded in rooting the device and trying to increase the motor speed?
Thanks...
RE: Maze Alpha bugs (vibration, etc)
Maze claims that volume, brightness and battery issues have been resolved in the latest official build (08/16). Perhaps vibration issues have been fixed too, as Maze claims other "optimizations". This build should also have the August security patches:

BTW: Maze Alpha cases are all over eBay now. Wish someone would make something other than the checkerboard pattern... just a matter of being patient...
I love the hardware on the ph-1 to the point the 5t feels like a phone from 1 or 2 years ago and I love the software on the 5t for the most part. Software is what you live with day to day and PH-1 has its issues. Screen doesn't respond always camera thing (why can i not shoot 16:9 photos argh) prefer oled but the lcd is pretty stunning. So i don't know what to do. Can somebody that really has really spent some time with the PH-1 and maybe know about the 5t tell me why I shouldn't or should keep that over 5t or will the little annoyances just get to me eventually. BTW huge user of AA so consider that as well.
Example of what i'm looking for when going to websites like Androidcentral the website takes advantage of the entire screen (the top) but where before i could could on the address and drag down to get to card view, on any site that does this I can have to click on the little card button...annoying. Or 5t i can zoom in full screen in youtube why can't i on ph-1. This is what i'm looking for. Thanks.
Oh and one other thing what pixel camera apk do i need to download to get better pictures/more options. I know there are ports and variation of ports some require some setup...looking for simple that give some level of hdr and if it's the one with full setup what setup should i have and keep. I know there are other pages but there are other phones million of responses constant update with in threads as opposed to updating the OP, thanks.

any more insight...it does. Consider this too i guess though money not really an object in this situation but OP5t with accessories about 650 (couple charges cover) Essential 399 with free 360 care which i will be quickly selling so for $300 bucks or so I for the phone which would allow me to quickly jump into something new in the spring when new stuff starts showing up again.
I had a OP5, and I know that for me custom ROM support and software are really missed, but I love the PH-1. This phone just looks and feels so much better for the price, I am willing to wait a while to see more dev support and official Oreo release. OnePlus has upset me in that they are now releasing 2 phones a year. I have had all their phones, but I think I will be taking a break from OP and just keeping the PH-1 for a while...
OP5T wins with the software. They have been working on their OS for almost 3 years so they know what they are doing. On the other hand, there is no other phone that looks and feels like the Essential, hardware is the best handsdown. There are some software issues, but to be honest I have non of it, everything works fine. I use mine in Mexico and in the US.
If you have good cellular reception with the PH1 I think you should keep it.
I personally am not a fan of OnePlus. If money truly isn't an issue, then I would go with the S8+. You can almost always find deals from Samsung on sites like Slickdeals and get it for a comparable price to 5t.
OnePlus has made it abundantly clear they don't care for their customers. I had three OnePluses since their first, and I can tell you first-hand that they are a terrible company. They don't like to honor their warranty and they make you pay for the shipping, and there's quite often problems with their phones... Then they only offer a year-and-a-half support for each device.
Essential has already stated that this phone will be updated for a very long time, especially since it's their first. I personally believe only things can go up from here, and their continuous support has proven that notion.
But it's up to you obviously go with whatever you like most.
Until recently I was on the market for a new phone. I had settled down on two choices: the PH-1 and OP 5T. Given that I had previously bought a OP2, I was trending towards a OP5T. But I ended getting the PH-1. Primarily because of OP's sofware update policy. It is downright unacceptable.
A couple of years ago, I bought my dad the OPT (OnePlus Two). They did not bother to push out Nougat update though Nougat arrived just a few months after the OPT. Ultimately I installed LineageOS on the OPT. But OP's software upgrade policy drove me away. Once bitten, twice shy.
One another reason I am disappointed with OP is their "no" to Treble support for existing devices as they upgrade to Oreo. Atleast they were straight about it, unlike other fiasco's like the data collection & push ads etc. Don't get me wrong. Not bashing OP for nothing. We love the OPT. Hardware still runs great with the LineageOS ROM.
But this time its the Essential PH-1. They have shown commitment to upgrade to Oreo with the beta on 11/14. Also some of the very recent updates to FW and to the camera app, the camera performance has improved significantly. The new portrait mode does bokeh very nicely. I would keep the PH-1!
i like to tinker with software so 5t has me interested at the same time I no longer want to root so really what it comes is is a bonus...i am leaning toward essential atm. WIll drive one for 1 week then the other for 1 week and see where i land. I hear you about the OP fiascos with the op2 etc i guess not to worried there. Not sure I like Rubin being away from essential i feel like he is the one pushing the boundaries there. I do like how quickly they have been updating...hope the wireless dock is not stupid...1 thing i really hate is no qi charging. I don't like samsung so that is out flirted with LG but don't like it enough to justify the price, if it was stock i would buy it all day long for what they charge.

The one plus has a better screen, more responsive digitizer, historical better development, longevity as a company, better camera, bigger battery, smoother release.
But.....
At that price differential the PH-1 probably wins out. My opinion that the 1+ is better assumes the 450$ essential VS a 550 1+
I'm having a hard time justifying keeping the PH1 and not getting the 5T. I still have my OP3 as a backup and I like everything better, but the size. I mean, build quality of the PH1 is amazing, but not the screen. Besides, the only time I ever get to admire the build quality is when I take it out of the case, which I won't go without. Even though my OP3 is 1½ yr old, the fluidity of the software with that screen is just so much better, not to mention the haptic feedback is perfect, not like the stupid overly strong haptic feedback on the PH1. I just love the size of the PH1, it's perfect. OP, I don't blame u asking for help making this decision. It is a really tough one. If I had to though, I would lean towards the 5T.
Sent from my PH-1 using Tapatalk
Ive had the op2 and op5. When I bought the op2, I felt the value of my purchase was solid for 2 years, it was the best value phone hands down. Now oneplus had an upward trend of rising prices that suddenly peter out bc of some competition from the essential. On top of the fact that their T releases always are better than their main numbered releases just seems extremely counter intuitive. On top of all the negative press they've been getting, makes me really wonder about the integrity of the company. Could their prices be cheaper seeing as how premium the essential is in the same price range? Did they really not have the technology to push a bezeless phone on their op5 release? I no longer trust oneplus, and will reevaluate the phone market in 2 years or so when I'm ready for an upgrade. My op5 got stolen, and so far I'd love to keep using essential as long as they stick around in the same price range.
I always rock a 50 dollar otterbox on my ops, but so far have been just using a tempered glass protector with no problems. So factor in a 128 gb phone with otterbox would put the phone close to 600 whereas I paid 400 for the essential. The essential over op5t is a no brainer for me.
Last Monday morning I ordered the one +5T,then I seen the Amazon offer for the PH1 and it was a no-brainer ,I immediately ordered the PH1 and cancelled the 5T.Software can be tweaked and with the amount of updates essential are pushing ,it's only going to get better.Hardware your stuck with once purchased and nothing comes close to the PH1
Combat same story with me except I choose to receive both then decide. I don't care about the recent bad press of OP every manufacture has some kind of data collection and every manufacture has had this issue including Samsung...op responded and adjusted. I also don't care that op upgrades fast somebody always does on monthly basis might as well be op.
I do care however that op didn't come with Oreo basically allows op to not support the device as long and stop at 9 instead of 10. In fairness the phone will be gone by then but this kind of strategy from a company frustrated me more then the other two issues listed above.
PH-1. Design and build. Semi-pure Android. Ridiculous $145 price. Possibly unfounded hope for Essential as a company I'd like to see stick around. And I rarely take pictures of anything that isn't a whiteboard or my thumb.
And last but not least:
