I have a Canadian Galaxy S4 i377m from Telus.
It's still running stock 4.2.2 MG1.
I want to upgrade to the KANGAKAT 4.4.2 ROM. I've been able to use TWRP to flash it and it seems to work correctly except that the Cell connection drops after the first call and then it says I have no service. For now, I restored my stock ROM and data from nandroid backup.
I have this exact problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49943845&postcount=1023
After lots of reading and research (it's my first time trying to flash a custom ROM), I think I need to update the radio.
Is MK6 the correct radio firmware to flash on my phone? Should I flash the radio before or after installing the new 4.4.2 ROM?
I know the radio firmwares are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2324667
What the hell is nonhlos.bin and do I need to pay attention to that?
I want a very stable GPE ROM. I won't be updating frequently and don't want to try many ROMS. Is kangakat the best choice?
Thanks for any and all help and advice.

For the modem, if your going to 4.4.2, you want to flash the NC1 modem. It has been listed in various threads on here. I just flashed the modem.bin file only, I have seen people get in trouble flashing the nonhlos file (loosing wifi and such). Just extract the modem.bin file and flash it through odin PC, make sure you take off the auto reboot as it takes longer to flash than odin allows before rebooting. Also when you flash, once odin says complete, boot back into download mode and repeat the flash, not sure this is necessary but it seems to help in some cases. as far as a GPE rom, check Danvh's thread, that one is build for Canadian phones, just make sure you don't flash anything that is just for I337 (US Version) you want to stick to roms that are specifically for i337m. There islikely going to be an update in th next month or so to 4.4.3 so it is up to you if you want to wait for that or flash again.....

Thanks for reply. Are these modem flashes reversible? I can always downgrade again, right?
I'll try this over the weekend.

I flashed the NC1 modem (twice) and installed Kangakat. Voice works fine but I have no data. I tried setting the telus Access point name and the Telus Mobile Network Operator. After searching networks, it finds Bell, Rogers and Telus. I select Telus and get a Network Registered notification but still no data.
I then flashed MK6 to try and again voice works fine but still no data.
In "About Phone" -> "Status" I always have
Mobile Network State: Disconnected
Edit: I made data work by creating a custom APN instead of relying on the preset APN:
These are the settings I used:
APN: sp.telus.com
No username/password
MMS APN: sp.telus.com
MMSC: http://aliasredirect.net/proxy/mmsc
MMS Proxy: 74.49.0.18:80
I found these settings here: http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...Iphone-5-to-Galaxy-s4?p=15213963#post15213963
The preset APN in Kangakat for telus was
APN: isp.telus.com
but doesn't seem to work.
I tried this using modem MK6 and everything was working: voice and data.
I then flashed NC1 again and data was still working.
Finally I tried a speedtest using the LTE data connection.
5 MB/s down and 2MB/s up.
I had an issue with Alliance rom. It went from wifi to 4g and I lost the prl and other stuff (said unknown). I only had wifi.
I was able to Odin back to stock. It took like three times as it would not move past the activation screen.
Now, on stock, I flashed TWRP recovering using ODIN, then used the CF root from Odin also. Phone restarted and while I have the 4g logo, I have no phone and the information is missing again (PRL). I do get wifi.
I just used Odin to reflash stock and it is still doing it. I also used the imei tool to restore what I had backed up (EFS). Can anyone help? What is going wrong?
Edit: Phone restarted with root BUT now I cannot make calls (it says roaming) and I am missing the prl and other things again. HOWEVER, I can use wifi, and 4g and no texting also.
If anyone has a clue I'd like to know, thanks.

I actually could not find the stock modem. I DID solve it.
1.) Odin back to stock. It will freeze on the activation screen.
2.) Remove sim card after shutting down.
3.) It will get past that and connect with wifi.
4.) THEN clock on roaming to turn it on with sim in.
5.) Phone will then contact US Cellular to "activate and program." It will finish after a few minutes.
6.) Restart and enjoy
In case this happens to anyone else. Thanks for the help (lol). I've had a Droid Eris, HTC DNA, and a Droid Bionic.
I have this strange problem where sometimes my modem does not work after a clean flash. Usually just making sure the data network preference is set to LTE solves the issue, and after 10 min or less the phone picks up the band. But I've just done a clean flash teamUB 1/11 and its been 24 hours with no data connection. This same build worked fine for this same phone a week ago, but the 1/19 broke the phone so I had to do a clean wipe and go back to 1/11.
I've played with data roaming options in CDMA roaming mode, set to domestic roaming, national roaming. Still no data
Any advice?
This is for a 900P (sprint) - Note that I am on CREDO (uses Sprint network)
EDIT - FIXED YAY!!! FULL LTE WORKING GREAT!

The issue started when I was forced to wipe my system data and do a clean install in order to get the phone functional after boot loop from 1/19 update. so yes, I would assume that the modem built into the 1/11 update I rolled back to (clean install) contained the modem. But, as stated, the 1/11 build was working fine for me before, and not now.
Is there a way to just update the modem itself on this build/phone? I've been wondering about that and wanted to try it if possible.

There is no modem included in TeamUB's roms.
First thing's first, what model are you using? Go to signature settings and write your model there, this way whoever is helping you they will know what they're dealing with.

No need to say sorry man, just mean it makes it easier. Haha you're signature says 900O lol.
1 Install Samsung USB driver for mobile phones
2 Download the NE5 modem one click flasher here
3 Put your phone into download mode (Turn off the device, press Volume Down, Home and Power Buttons simultaneously, Once you see the warning message, release all buttons, Press Volume Up to enter download mode, Now your device should be in download mode)
4 Run the file from #2 and flash modem (if NE5 doesn't help try the other ones).
I don't think it's a modem problem though. IMO it's either the rom or the operator..

The NE5 throws a <OSM> MD5 hash value is invalid error. I flashed the ND2 version and no immediate data connection, but from past experience it can take a little while for the modem to sync. No idea what causes the delay, but everytime i flash a new rom it can take sometimes up to 30min before it gets a data connection. Been 15min no connection yet.
Couldnt find a mirror anywhere of that NE5 one click flasher. Know of any other hosts? i googled to no avail.

Update:
I have restored a old backup to kitkat, modem working fine, instant connection. Then I did a system wipe, clean flash to cyanogenmod 1/20 update released yesterday.....no modem. Restored backup again to kitkat, then did a dirty flash to 1/20 cyanogenmod.....no modem.
I think the issue is 5.0 itself. The issue is so random, I do not know how to troubleshoot it. I've installed maybe a dozen CM's so far, and its been a coin toss whether the modem works after install. Sometimes it syncs up after a few min, and sometimes never. its really strange because I had the modem working fine on TeamUB from late december, through 3 or 4 updates until 1/19 boot looped it. Now after that nothing has gotten the data back on other than restoring to kitkat.
When i did the clean install to cyanogenmod, on the startup process where it says 'waiting to activate cellular service' it gets stuck there and never activates the data.
Also, when trying to flash the NE5 tar md5 you linked to, I get md5 error! Binary is invalid. Im supposed to use AP, yes?
EDIT - Changed preferred network type to 3G and after a few reboots got data! Going to change back to LTE now and give it some time to see if i can get it to sync up.

No luck leaving it on LTE. When I switch back to 3g I can get a connection, LTE set in preferences I get no connection, not even 3g. I've been testing around the city and at my home, where I can always pickup a LTE connection from past experience.
It seems that the LTE protocol within 5.0 is buggy for my situation. If it works, it seems to work fine, but when it doesnt work, it never works. So its either glass is full or empty

There are two versions of labels in Odin. The "normal" says "phone" the one I don't like says "CP". You have the Odin I don't like lol, so yours says "CP". That's where you put the modem. "AP" is for firmware/roms only.
Try these two modems, which I found on this page, NK4 for 4.4 while NKD is for 5.0.
Try Ktoosez kernel and also check your Apn settings, it's supposed to be optimised for CDMA phones and might help you.

Congrats! I'm glad it worked out Ktoonsez mentioned in the CM12 thread that his kernel was optimized for sprint/verizon phones in some way, don't remember what though :silly:
Hey Guys I need some help with Nv data (EFS )
The NV data baseband is I9500UBUAMDE nonetheless my firmware baseband is I9500UBUGNJ1
I think this is why my phone do not have a stable conection with cel-towers...
So I need to know, how to update the nv data without corrupt it?
Kindly regards,
AG
Just flash a stock ROM using Odin. This will ensure that the bootloader and modem match.
Already did it some many times... Without results...
The phone is missing the imei and MAC address?
No one is missing...
Phone signal Goes out and in.
However while the phone has signal. I can call and navigate on internet..
Do you need the efs folder?
If the phone has an imei, then it seems like the efs folder may be fine and something else is happening.
So flashes are successful in Odin?
Could the phone be blacklisted? Was it ever dropped? Tried a different SIM card? Tried our SIM card in another phone?
Ok, I have to be honest... I was on 4.4.2
I try to use galaxysim unlock. However EFS was v2 and I restore a v1 efs folder in order to unlock the phone. It works. However after upgrade to 5.0. It start to fluctuate the signal...
Note: v1 and v2 are versions in matter of security of the EFS folder...
That is how this how begins...
Did you restore the original version 2 efs? Do you have a backup of the original efs? If not, I'm not sure if an nvwriter will help.
I think I do not have one...
What should I do?.....
I'm not sure what to suggest. Maybe Google nvwriter and see if it works with your phone.
Hello XDA,
I recently purchased a H910 from EBAY.
I was able to install Oreo and root it using the excellent tutorials before I was able to have a working sim card on hand so I cannot confirm if this phone was good or bad as I received it. I am using an activated ATT sim card and have used it in another phone with calls, texts, and data working. I have not for the life of me been able to get the any of these features to work on the H910. I have checked the APN settings, I have confirmed both the IMEI number and the sim ID number with ATT. The H910 is able to see the sim card but no mobile network is connected. I can use wifi calling and texting.
I did make a backup/dump of the phone and have flashed the modems, fsg, and misc images with no effect.
I have tried to restore to a stock image of 10q and 20G with the results ending in boot loops so I have not been able to test the stock firmware.
Is there any way to test for a hardware fault?
I would like to avoid returning this phone for something that could be fixed on my end.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ive had nothing but great luck getting phones off ebay, but it really sounds like you may have gotten a lemon.
The H910v20 is one of the easiest phones to root and return to stock the 20G rom should work and immediately ask to update to 20H with a AT&T sim in it.
taking the 20G to 20H update will insure you have all the correct modem files and APN.

clsA, Thank you for taking the time to reply, and for your excellent tutorials.
I tried both the stock(default) APN and manually entering the nxtgenphone APN info I was prompted by ATT but no change. Searches for a signal for about 30 seconds and the throws an x over the signal bars. The phone does detect the sim card and shows my phone number.
I do think it is hardware failure. All of the modem problems I have read have an error saying that the radio is off. I do not get this I get a message stating out of service. I also copied the Modem files from another stock H910 20H from a friend and that did not change anything. Their phone also shows signal bars even when the sim card is removed.
I checked the MD5 Hashes and they are correct on the SD card I was using. I saw no errors in TWRP and I tried 3 different flashing combos with both 10q and 20H. The first was to format device and then advance wipe system, cache, and dalvik, then flash, followed by format device. I then tried just format before and format after flashing, and then not formatting before and only formatting after and got the same boot loops with the 3 combos depending on whether I was using 10q or 20g. ie 2 different boot loops with the different zips. Once the boot loop started I could get to the stock recovery to "erase" the phone but that had no change. The only way I found to stop the loops was to flash the 996.kdz file using lgup and start over. The 20H file works perfectly. as does the 10R. It is really odd.
