Has anyone else had issues with Google Play Music staying active and draining battery after you stop playback? It constantly uses CPU and drains battery even if swiped out of the notification bar. The drain stops only after swiping it out of the recents or force stopping it. It does it using headphones or Bluetooth, streaming or cached music.
This seems to have happened recently, possibly after the latest app update. I have not tested on other Android devices to see if this is specific to the S7E.

I'm not using Play Music myself, but I can assure you that swiping the notification doesn't necessarily kill an app. So Play Music will probably keep running in the background if not killed through the recent apps list. And because it's a media app, I assume it will also keep the mediaserver alive, which also drains battery.
It's the same for me using Poweramp. Unless I pause the music AND kill it through recent apps it will keep running.
If this is just since an update, they probably changed the behavior when killing the notification from killing the app to not killing the app anymore.
That is just an assumption because it's like I said the same for me and Poweramp.
No this is definitely a new development. I have used Play Music for a few years and it's never been like this.

It's also draining faster while using Play Music as well. An hour of streaming over WiFi and my battery dropped 20% with media server and play music showing high usage.

Hmm. Maybe try to downgrade the Play Music app to a couple of versions earlier and turn auto-update off in Google Play, then re-enable it in 2-3 weeks. If it's really caused by an app update, you can use an earlier version for some time to avoid battery drain and update again when a newer version is out.
That's what I'm going to try. I reformatted my micro SD card and cleared cache and that seems to have helped with media server. I uninstalled updates for Play Music and will try that.

Rolling back to an older version helped slightly, but it still happens. I think it has to do with background syncing with Google servers. I ticked the restrict background data option under data usage in the application manager and that seems to be keeping it in check without affecting streaming.
Check if google is stuck in the sync process. Its a old bug that shouldn't occur anymore, but you never know.
If it is stuck, remove it from device admins, delete data, cache and updates of the app, restart and update it again. Afterwards give it back device admin rights.

Everything is syncing fine. One time I did notice a calendar sync issue, but I switched it of and then back on and it synced fine. I tried turning Google Play Music sync off and that made no difference. However, restricting background data has solved the issues. It has been several days now and its no longer running in the background draining my battery after use.
Its not running fine if it drains less when you restrict the background data. Just because you cant easily see it, doesnt mean theres not something wrong in the background.
Could be another app as well but at least for me, turning off a feature wouldnt really be satisfying.

I don't really see it as turning off a feature since everything works as it should with the background data restricted. There have been no issues with streaming or downloading since restricting background data. Obviously something is amiss since that shouldn't be necessary, but for all intents and purposes, it is working now without the battery drain.

I decided to see if the new version worked without the drain, so I updated to v6.15.3519-0.H and the problem started back up immediately even with background data restricted. I uninstalled updates back to the version included in the firmware, v6.7.2713Z.2790541 and its back to no battery drain.
There is obviously some wakelock keeping the phone from deep sleep in the newer versions. I don't have root and haven't had time to try wakelock detector without root. I may give it a go today and see if I can figure it out.

I'm having the same problem with my s7 flat. Play music constantly runs in the background and drains battery (without listening to music). Has anyone found a solution?
Same issue here as well. It's so frustrating to the point where I'm considering going to spotify but there isn't a good way to upload my music collection.

I'm still having this issue. Restricting background data keeps it in check when I'm out and not on wifi, but if it is open in the background while on wifi, it starts draining. I have tried changing sync settings, cache settings, everything. So far the only way to prevent it is to force close the app when you are not using it.
Yeah this is ridiculous. My screen on time is 20 minutes.

Not really. It is probably minimized to a point where I can live with it, but it still happens. It still has a tendency to drain about 5-10% per day depending on how long I've been on wifi (I have background data restricted to keep it from running on LTE) without me having opened the app. If I force stop it, I can get a few days before it shows back up, unless I actually use it.

Hey guys - I am having a problem with my phone, and I am hoping someone can help? (Running stock/no-root, w/2.3.4)
A few weeks prior to the 2.3.4 release (while on 2.3.3), I noticed that an app called Bump was constantly running in the background (even though I had never launched the app before), and I'd have to constantly go in and manually kill it.
*Also I should note, Google Maps was another constant running app, that I would have to manually kill along with the Bump app.
This got tiresome, and since I wasn't using Bump anyway, I went ahead and uninstalled it. I figured that a recent update to the app/Bump, was the cause. After removing the Bump app, the problem went away (as well as the Google Maps stopped running in the background too - odd I know).
Anyway, the problem is back, but much worse this time - as this past couple of days, my phone is now running a bunch of apps in the background out of the blue!
1) Tango
2) To Market Lite
3) Google Market (even though I have Accounts & Sync/Background Data turned off)
4) Google Music
5) YouTube
6) Photaf
*Note: I have not launched any of the apps listed above in awhile, except for Google Market, which I turn on Background Data for this, and then turn off when I am done.
I have since removed Tango, but it hasn't solved the problem. It seems to happen the most when I turn my phone on (after I reboot, or if I charge over night with the phone turned off), but also will happen when phone is on during the day - with no reboot.
Anyone have an idea what's causing this, or how to fix it? TIA!
The best way to fix this is to stop worrying about it.
Apps do sometimes run in the background or have services waiting for some events to happen - it actuially HELPS battery life and performance and barely consumes any CPU cycles until something happens that triggers the app.
Killing them will drain your battery and make you crazy, more than letting the apps work as designed will.

Thank you for the feedback. I just found it odd that this just started happening, especially since some of the apps running were apps I haven't launched in ages (or ever used).
Also (and I forgot to mention in my post above), that a couple of the apps were running so hardcore - that it set off the alarm in Watchdog, as an app draining my battery and memory - telling me to kill it. So idk what to think, other than I find this behavior a bit odd.
Many of them are set to run based on conditions, like bootup, wifi on, widget added, etc. If you hate it, download autostarts from the market.

You're experiencing wakelocks. Might wanna do some research on the forum so that you can post logs for people to analyze what's really eating your battery.

THIS. I was having problems with wakelocks and traced them back to these few things below which got my battery life to greatly increase once disabled.
1) using dashclock extensions like FB and gmail
2) leaving google sync on in settings for the various google services
3) corporate email exchange servers
4) setting a long time variable for the phone to lock after the screen turns off (i did this to prevent putting in a pin to unlock but it kept the phone awake after the screen turned off)
5) live wall papers
There is also a known issue in the stock kernel that causes the phone to stay awake when it is supposed to go into sleep mode during extended periods of inactivity. This can be solved by using a custom kernel just as Franco r90 which has implemented patches in order to allow the phone to go into sleep to preserve battery. It is expected to be fixed in the next official OTA from google although this was also expected to be in 4.2.2 and was not fixed fully.
Same issue here. 4.2.2 stock kernel+rom, rooted
BBS shows "suspend_backoff" is at 45% no idea what's causing that.
Disabled pretty much all of the sync services but no improvement.
Interestingly right after the 4.2.2 update, the battery life was good.

Update: Worked for a day now suspend_backoff is back. Happened after a recharge.
Could it be that afther the phone is charged something gets changed.

I turn off my wifi when not home so I don't think that's the issue here.. I've tried removing a few apps like dash clock and my live wallpaper to see if it helps my issue. Will report back.

Google play services has something to do with the high usage. Yesterday I was near 20% usage today I disabled it and android os is at 7%. It only affects YouTube app for me, but the browser version is fine. I haven't seen any adverse affects other than maybe losing updates to the play store and ota updates which I don't care about because that's what xda and Roms are for. Now it may be placebo, but it also seems like the ui is smoother. Battery has improved greatly with sot of 3 hours with 57% left.

Try using the app greenify if your rooted.. It's been helping my battery life. Use it on maps and that will help. If maps is set as a system app, move it or just install banks minimal gapps so you can download from play store.

So, I'm rooted on VZW with no OTA and suddenly had abnormal battery drain today. Any idea why this may be happening?
Mine is kinda high today as well. I saw something about Google having issues today with email and other applications. This could be related, or phones can't connect to Google so it just keeps on trying.

Install Greenify. Hibernate all the APPs that you don't want notification from first. This app doesn't allow APPs to Wakelock you're phone. Once you find which offending account is the issue you'll be ok. I found that Facebook woke up my phone thousands of times and I have up notifications. Best choice ever ?

As far as the google services battery drain, I eliminated that by simply turning off google location services. The actual GPS is so quick to lock that I haven't run into a scenario yet where I'd absolutely need to turn it back on.
My location services are off. Doesnt seem to help me much. I also bought donation greenify and greenfied Google Play services and Google Play Store

With 15:34 for time on, and 1:45 of screen on time, I'm currently at exactly 50% battery. I feel it was something awry with Google Services yesterday and an isolated issue. Location services were off today, but I did nothing with Greenify, yet at least.

How is that working? Considering doing the same as I've already tried removing the sytem app and replacing with Play Services from the play store. That seemed to work for a few days but the nip wake locks are worse than ever right now. Killing the otherwise stellar battery.

works great today..... google services error has gone away today and my battery life seems longer. :good:
I just froze google play services and will look at the battery stats later to report the difference. What apps are affected by freezing this though? It seems Hangouts is one.
I don't know why, but all my days are pretty much exactly the same location-wise and some days have huge wakelocks, others don't.
Aside from installing the play store services which seemed to help quite a bit, I've also noticed a nice drop in wakelocks since I went on to Google's Location History dashboard (https://maps.google.com/locationhistory/b/0/dashboard?hl=en) and deleted all my history so maybe it could re-create it.
One thing I've noticed is that on high-wakelock days, my GPS is going nutso. My point markers on that dashboard will have me moving ALL OVER the place, even while I'm just sitting at my desk at work.
This leads me to the conclusion that signal plays a huge role, and I do have bad signal at work (1 bar, and can't get a good GPS lock at my desk).
Also, you can minimize these wakelocks without the use of Greenify by simply turning off Location Reporting and Location Using WiFi and Mobile Networks. This dropped my wakelocks to pretty much 0, immediately. But you'll lose things like weather widget geolocation and some Google Now features. On the other hand, this is a more viable option than freezing services which can cause you to lose push notifications for GMail among other things.
I've been messing with this throughout the day today and the problem is high NIP wakelocks originating from Google Services...specifically the Network Location process. So the fix for me appears to be disabling newtork location while leaving GPS location enabled. This is usally the reverse of how I do things but for this phone, it may be the better solution. Google Now is still working for me, as is maps/navigation. There may be some casualties of disabling newtwork location but I haven't run across them yet. I've always viewed these two options as coarse (network) vs.fine (gps) location. So I'm hoping GPS picks up the slack and I don't lose any functionality. What I could see happening is that it just takes longer for location to be confirmed because network location is faster. I'll take that in lieu of battery drain however.
Still need to run like this for a couple days to see how things go but I was getting hundreds and even thousands of NIP wakelocks in a run cycle prior to disabling network location. I'm now getting zero.

You are correct, there's the first casualty confirmed. I'm going to run like this for a few days and see what gives. I don't use the cards anyway so no issue there. If anyone knows of other functionality loss, please speak up.
Like some of you have said, I don't rely on Google Now cards, and I don't leave the city I'm in, so for things like weather, I am find with the hourly syncing of my weather app. If I do need GPS/location services, it's not hard to toggle and battery life is incredible. I feel it was just something going rogue the other day. Today, with locaiton off, I've been off the charger for 15:34 with 1:24 screen on time and I'm at 58%. I spent a good portion of today in a sub-basement on airplane mode, with wifi active in the background though. Walking around campus, I used Songza via 4G due to some wifi weak spots. I can't be happier with this phone, as my GNex would have long since been dead, even on airplane mode.
EDIT: Holy ****, 15:34 sounded familiar, checked my post from yesterday, I responded then at the same time off the charger...
Okay so I may have fixed it on my phone.
I forced closed "Google Play Services" and "Google Devices Framework" then rebooted.
Google services was using it 50% of battery consistently through the day and now its down to using 2% of battery. I'll come back at the end of the day with battery stats.

Nexus 6P users with GSam Battery Monitor and Root Companion, do you notice the one of the highest battery drainers is under "System (mediaserver) and when you click into it is shows "Audio On" for a very long time?
I did not play any music or anything with much sound except normal apps notification. I also tried uninstalling updates of Youtube/Google Music etc and cleared data and cache, and uninstalling a few possible apps such as apps relates to "sounds and music" and the "Audio On" time just keeps going.
Is it normal? If not, any solution or suggsetions? Some users suggested it's Ok Google always on. Thanks.

I have the same, but never managed to find out if it was normal or not. Audio on time was generally a bit more than the Screen on Time. OK Google was completely turned off.
I'm still to establish if it is a GSAM reporting issue, or a real problem.
Are you on the stock factory image but rooted? Is your OK Google set to always on, within the Google app, or never? I had the same problem when reverting back to stock, but switched to PureNexus and started using Amplify and Naptime and it has improved significantly. It does go up when I play music/podcasts though but that's normal I think.

I am on everything stock except rooted. My OK Google is always on but i tried to disable it and still see the "Audio On" time counting. But I do notice the Audio On time does not always count. I failed to find any sorts of co-relation of the time to any apps though. It feels so random. I have already tried uninstalling Music App, some apps with notification time and now disabling Google OK always on, but still the time counts on.
I am having the same issue since few days now.. The mediaserver (especially audio on) usage is really really high.
Do you guys use spotify by any chance? I didn't install it for a while and today after Spotify installation it's like drain time babe.

i don't use spotify. the drain comes out of nowhere and unpredictable. that's the problem.
It looks like wechat draining bro, after receiving any notification from wechat or idleing it will cause it drain on audioon bugs.
If you force close wechat and recheck it stop at the value.
I've been having this issue too. I've been switching back and forth between Chroma and Pure Nexus and it hasn't changed. I always get at least 25% drain due to mediaserver audio on. It's driving me crazy :/

I have the same problem! I will give some stats: Ok Google always on, no local music only play music, no spotify, pocket casts, I tried to only scan with notification, 2 clean installs, my kernel often keeps the device awake.
Running Kylo on Ubermallow with Amplify. I think this drain is real, because when I did not have it my battery lasted longer.

I do use LED Blinker. You think it's causing this?
Interesting. I use gravity box notification light control. Are you suggesting that when an app controls the led it could cause this issue?

Full charge at 9:00pm and by 6:00am I only see 3% drop, I don't call it a drain

Yes there is definitely higher drain on Android 10 overall.
Currently I am on AOSiP10 and getting 3-4% idle drain and about 2-3 SOT less than on AICP Pie. My friend on Stock 10 @ZeroInfinity has noticed a higher drain than Pie as well.
I'm in the process of figuring out what is causing the higher drain.

No mine is about the same as with Pie (I haven't noticed any difference ... apart from once when I ran it right down I only got about 8hrs of sot (screen on time whereas on pie I'd get about 9 but it wasn't scientific not sure if I had the exact same settings).
Is an app showing high battery usage (Also use hamburger menu to show full system usage which incl standby)(might even be worth also looking at memory usage for each app under developer settings, if nothing stands out under battery for some reason). If very high usage suddenly maybe an app conflict with latest update. Or possibly even a crypto miner or some other malware. You can also check battery usage when booted into safe mode so no third party apps run.

Custom is always better than stock on this phone.
Wait for the AOSP ROMs to arrive and you will be able to easily get double that SOT time!

I did notice somewhat higher drain on A10, but not too much to worry about. My SOT on a single charge is usually about 5+ hours. Full stock, rooted. I am using WiFi Automatic to disable WiFi when the phone is inactive, so that might be helping, not sure how much...
On AOSiP10 there is no wild battery drain.
My device sleeps like a baby.
My advice? Stay off stock Android 10 if at all possible!

Not trying to convince anybody, but I am quite happy on stock. I used to flash custom ROMs a lot, but there is always *something* that doesn't work properly. Could be camera, audio, bluetooth, calls, sensors, whatever... So, optimized stock always seems to work better for me. Especially considering that stock on PH-1 is essentially (no pun intended ) a clean Android, I see no reason to switch. But... To everyone their own.

something must be wrong, maybe old app dicta restored or similar?
The following is fairly normal for me with web browsing & social media (no gaming), I have background scanning set to off for both wifi & Bluetooth but do have an always on VPN as you can see (that battery drain is from other apps using the VPN, not just the VPN)

What optimizations are you using with Android 10?
I'm getting similar results just using Magisk modules: FDE.AI (plus liboemcrypto disabler for on-demand apps and updates).
Also, my phone was ported from Sprint to T-Mobile and I've only recently got a better grip on changing tower conditions with this APN guide from T-Mobile. I had redundant APNs that may have been slowing connection to changing conditions while in motion or changing towers. Support wasn't much help anytime I called. Vacationing in a rural area with limited and slow data had me looking for a better solution. Even better than before coming back home and surfing internet in a passenger car on the freeway. Deleting the redundant ones was key, I believe.

Actually, same here - I am using FDE.AI as well. I also use WiFi Automatic to turn off WiFi when the phone sleeps (IMO, it was a dumb move to remove that setting from Android). I am also shutting down Internet access with NetGuard to the apps that have no business with it, and limiting or removing location access to most of the apps.
On my previous devices I had to get rid of the OEM and carrier bloat, but PH-1 is using basically a clean Android, making it much leaner...

I haven't tried WiFi disabling in years (Juice Defender and profile apps) but I do limit apps' access to Internet with Adguard (unlocked licensed version).
I'll give the WiFi Automatic app a try and see how that goes. I have little use for WiFi outside of those saved networks that auto connect.

mine is just a bit weird on the battery usage. the Google play services is the highest usage on the battery but it just use running foreground for an hour. just want to clear the phone cache but it seems that it could not be cleared since my phone is not rooted

If you are sure it's play services you can just go to apps, find it & then go to "storage & cache" and clear cache or if that doesn't work clear data. (you do not need to be rooted)
However I suspect it's more likely another app is the cause as some apps will use services like location that rely on Google play services which then shows high battryr use but it is these other apps that are actually the cause as they are requesting the service. If you can't work out which tureen on developer option and look under "running services" and "memory" watch hopefully will give you a clue.
PS. You can boot to the recovery and wipe the whole cache partition from there

clearing data is the last method for me. if it is possible, i would not do it.
actually, the Google play services don't play to much, the battery just drain when the screen is on. however, i have tried to clear the cache of google play service before, it doesn't help.
there is an update today, just see whether it would improve it or not. would it be the issue of the battery indicator?
