I am in New Zealand but my X5 came from the UK. There is an standard upgrade but most particularly I want to install the NZ 2degrees custom upgrade.
I have the upgrade from the MoDaCo site and have followed the instruction - both of the files, update.app and update_cust.app are unzipped and placed in the directory dload on the root of the SD card. So far so good. I start the phone with the Vol + Vol - and start button and the phone starts and goes to the pink screen. Then nothing happens at all, even after 30 minutes. Remove battery then restart the phone and it starts with the original firmware. But the strange thing is that both the update files are no longer under the dload directory. I have repeated this several times with the same result.
Help!!
Very strange...Have you tried going into recovery by pressing Vol+ and Power and wiping the phone and installing that through update firmware option?
If that doesn't work, replace the recovery.img file to get Clockwork recovery 4.0.0.5 and then try the same process.
Thanks. I'm a genuine Noob which will probably be obvious from my questions. First, I assume that after recovery, any installed apps have to be reinstalled - is that right?
And second, does the bit about Clockwork recovery imply a rooted phone?
Yes, most of your apps will be lost, in less you backup your apps with Google...but even then, some of them will be lost...I know that from experience.
CW recovery is actually part of the rooting process. For all steps involved, have a look here:

Hi all!
This is my first post and I am new to rooting so I will not know as much advanced techniques/terms so please be patient.
I decided to root my phone to install a custom ROM (Thats what everyone wants, right?), more specifically to get a newer version of Android. I found the Aurora ROM by Dzo and I flashed 2.04 and it seems very fluid and fast. I didn't upgrade from the official 2.3 because I couldn't find the files. I'm really liking the ICS environment.
My first question is: How do I find/install a baseband? I want to use this as my daily ROM and I can't do much without signal.
Second, My battery indicator is not working and how do I fix this?
Thirdly, When I put the device to sleep for about 5 secs or more it will not wake up and reboots. Is this fixed with a later patch?
And lastly, What upgrade pattern should I use to get up to 5.0? (e.g. 2.04-2.5-2.6 etc or jump straight to a version and go from there)
Thanks in advance
First of All,you must install official gingerbread for install ICS.
Your problems (battery and baseband) are causing by old amss.bin (baseband) and old bootloader.
First, install official gingerbread with code name V100R001C00B518G001. If you install this version, you must not do root for install Aurora ICS.
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?lws54xxb3lcm7di
If you install it,You must install CWM 5.0.2.8 or CWM 5.0.2.7 or CWM 6.0.2.8 or CWM 5.5.0.4 or TWRP Recovery. My prefence is install CWM 6.0.2.8
Here is 6.0.2.8;
http://code.google.com/p/forumber-projects-for-u8800/downloads/detail?name=recovery-clockwork-6.0.2.8-2.6.35.7-u8800.img&can=2&q=
1.Download the recovery
2.Remove SD Card and delete dload folder in phone's internal memory (if exists).
3.Power on the device while pushing volume up and down buttons.
4.If the pink screen appears, connect the phone to PC and wait for detect the phone
5.Rename downloaded img file to recovery.img and copy it to image folder in mass storage in Pink Screen
6. Download latest Aurora 5.0 and update 20 and copy those files to your sd card.
7. Power On the phone while pressing volume up button.
8. Backup the system to your sd card
9. Do "Wipe data/factory set"
10.Install Aurora 5.0,then install update 20
11.Reboot the system. And that's it! Enjoy the ICS
Just one question, Do I install gingerbread without the device rooted? and do I have to wipe my phone?

You can install offical gingerbread on rooted ROM. You don't need to wipe because the system will do wipe automaticly
No. You do not have to wipe. But you can if you want.
To install official gingerbread, you can install it over a rooted or a non rooted device. It doesn't matter because when you install gingerbread. The device will automatically be un rooted. You would have to root your device again after installing official gingerbread.
The easiest way to root gingerbread is to use SuperOneClick. Here is a tutorial for rooting your gingerbread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420728
In the link above, just do the steps under 'Rooting the U8800 with SuperOneClick v2.3.3' and 'Installing ClockworkMod 5.5.0.4 on your U8800'.
I hope I helped. Good Luck and have fun rooting!
When I try to flash the Gingerbread ROM, It says Installation aborted. Why is this?
I am using CWM 5.5.0.4
That's not right...

You do not flash official firmware with CWM.
You must extract the file that you have downloaded.
After extracting it, keep going into the extracted files until you find a folder called 'dload'.
Copy this dload folder to the root of sdcard.
Now, power on your phone by pressing and holding down the power + volume up + volume down buttons all together.
The phone will automatically start installing the official android 2.3

If you don't understand anything then you are welcome to ask me about it. I will explain it to you.
Good Luck!

You don't need to pass boot animation. Do this;
1.Download the recovery
2.Remove SD Card and delete dload folder in phone's internal memory (if exists).
3.Power on the device while pushing volume up and down buttons.
4.If the pink screen appears, connect the phone to PC and wait for detect the phone

Good Job. I hope you don't run into any kind of problem
I've recently updated my phone to the unofficial CM 13 , and now that the official android 6.0 for my phone is released I wanted to update to it. The problem is that the official way of updating is holding both volume buttons and power button while phone is turned off, but that takes me to the recovery of the installed CM13. I tried flashing the stock recovery, and the furthest i got was that the installation began , but got stuck at 0 %.
Note that when I tried installing CM13 , there was a problem with the package identifying my device, so i searched and found out that i can skip the device check, once i did that i could install CM13, but when i go to about phone in settings , i find that device type is unkown.
Install the custom CWM recovery then wipe davlik cache, power off phone and then try to flash stock ROM

How can I flash the stock rom with CWM , because I believe it's only flashable with the stock recovery , and I tried flashing it with the stock recovery but it didn't work .
You dont need the stock recovery. Just boot into CWM or TWRP and wipe cache & davlik cache.
Then power off the phone. When its off hold the power button and the + and - buttons.
When the Huawei Ascend logo shows up let go of the power button and keep holding the + and - buttons until the installation screen shows up.
Take off the case off the phone if you have any.

Whenever I try to do that it gives me an error, the error doesn't even stay enough time to be read.
Just to add that you should have an apdate.app file in folder called dload on external SD card for you to be able to flash it back to stock if you have done that already not sure ??

What recovery you using?
I know, I should have dumped the stock system partition, but I only found about this crypto key thing after the deed was done. Starting from here, what's the quickest way to go back to a functioning phone? After a factory reset all I'm left with is Meticulus TWRP, but being unable to wipe the crypto key I can't flash anything so my phone is crippled. I suppose flashing a stock image from dload would help, right?

You need to download official firmware and flash it via dload method. ( The firmware must be the same as the one in your oeminfo file./

In the end I solved the problem with a mix of both the suggested solutions: in other words by:
1) formatting the SD card with gparted on my Arch machine.
2) putting my stuff back on it, plus a stock ROM and CM13
3) flashed stock
4) flashed Meticulus TWRP with adb
5) flashed CM
6) stuck with CM because it's actually pretty good right now, plus it manages multiple storage options better than stock...
Thank you guys for the support.

Can you please send us the whole compilation number? It has the format of ALE-L21C***B***, as well as your Android version. It would be very helpful if you made that??

In that case the plan would be to simply download the B895 or B896 update. If your device is single SIM, something I think it is, download B895, if not, B896. I cant put links because I'm a new user, but you can search for the files in androidfilehost.com
Then, extract the update.zip, and if you have stock recovery, put the extracted UPDATE.APP in a folder called "dload" in your internal memory/SD card, and reboot reboot your phone by pressing the Vol+/- and Power buttons(It should begin the installation). If you have TWRP installed, you can just flash it normally.
I think that is all! I've heard that doing this can encrypt your memory, but that can easily be solved with TWRP by wiping the data partition, next to the Factory Reset button. If you have any questions, fell free to ask.

Yeah it started encrytpting but because I am a epic (not really) I restarted the phone that moment and messed up some things, so it wanned me to do a factory reset from the stock recovery an I accepted, next I booted into the system with all the preinstalled apps in /data missing, so that meant no file manager but I had google play so I installed es file manager, and no systen files were currupted (I forgot to mention upper while flashing the update I got some unknown command error) so after that I needed to flash twrp because its replaced by stock, I did this and what I saw, it cant mount /data, the fix for this is to make the /data partition FAT and after that EX4, and I rebooted but it cannot read it?! So the system did a factory reset and made twrp again cant mount partition, so there was no other way than flashing a custom rom so I did this with /data (make it fat and es4 again) and did a full wipe, after that installed lineageOS 14 for my phone and here ends the story. Thank you for all the help
