s7 edge fingerprint sensor not responding
Hi this the first time i am posting on xda forums. Wanted help regarding my s7 edge fingerprint sensor. It responds just fine sometimes but most of the time it gives an error. I tried the solution of clearing cache , pressing power and volume down button together to soft reset it. But nothing worked. The funny part is that it will respond for a few while after rebooting ( restarting ) it but when it gibes the error it stops completely until restarted again. Did not drop it. Didn't place it in water. The problem did start after updating from marshmallow to nuogat and even after getting two security patch updates. Don't know what to do. Can anyone plz guide me how to use *#0*# code to check fingerprint sensor because when i check it it sometimes give that intializing failed. Sometimes if i don't put mu finger on the sensor it says it passed and when i place my finger it only shows first box passed while the rest of the boxes fail. I searched everywhere on internet for but in the end came back to xda and decided to ask u guys. As i did got alot of help from u guys on my s2 and note 4. I hope that someone might try to help.

Unless it's a hardware issue, start as follow:
1. Create 4 fingerprint profiles (maximum allowed), use different variations of your thumb.
2. Clean Cache portion in recovery mode.
If all that does not help, do a factory reset.

I do have all 4 fingerprints registered and have cleared the cache from recovery and settings both. And i do keep on cleaning it when it size increases. And i did perform a factory data reset and restored my data from note4. Do u think i should not restore the data of my note 4 after factory reset ??!? and thanku for replying ..

Agree with you, don't restore any data or apps from backup, just start as a new device and create from scratch the finger print profiles and try it.
If this doesn't fix the problem, it possible that the new update broke the finger print functionality.

Thanku for your time. I really appreciate tour help. Thanku

I did use my phone after factory reset and as a new phone but it gave the same error after 1 day. What do u mean by "create from scratch the fingerprint profile"

He meant that delete your existing fingerprint saves and create new fingerprint saves

Camera Failed

I have a 9505 on 4.4.2 and I got the dreaded camera failed message. So I searched and found that all I needed to do.
Clear camera cache and data
From the home screen go to menu then settings. From settings go to the application manager then swipe twice to the left to choose the all tab. Scroll to the camera and tap it, then tap the force close button, the clear cache button and the clear data button. Note that your preferences and settings may have been deleted when you do this. After you are done with all this, reboot your phone and then check if the camera is working
Failings of the camera may have to do with cached data that has been corrupted. Tapping the force close button will stop the app from running and then clearing the cache and the data will delete the files that are used by the camera when its app is launched and this will also delete any preferences and settings that you have set. This procedure will only affect the camera app.
This didn't work
Factory Reset
If the above procedure doesn’t work, then you should try this out if you cannot live without using your phone’s camera. Before you do anything else though, you may want to make a backup of everything important in your phone before you proceed with this.
First you have to tap the menu button from the home screen. The choose settings and go to the accounts tab. Tap reset then tap factory data reset and then select delete all.
This should delete all of the settings and data that can be reached by Android. There are certain folders and partitions that can’t be deleted by doing this. You can delete those using the procedure next.
This didn't work
Wipe Cache Partition
In case the problem is not solved after this try this procedure.
Turn your phone off. After this, press and hold the volume up, home and power buttons until your phone vibrates. Then let go of the power button but keep on holding the volume up and home buttons until the Android System recovery screen pops up. Press the volume down button to choose the “wipe cache partition” option. Press the power key to select it.
This empties the contents of the cache partition. The files that could not be deleted by doing a factory reset are now deleted. Hopefully this should solve your problem.
This didn't work
So I thought I would send it back to samsung and get it fixed under warranty, problem was I had triped Knox so no warranty.
So I ordered a new camera module as I have read that this fixes the problem ......it didn't, but then I read that there are different modules so I ordered another from a different place this didn't work.
So now I am at a loss as to what to do has anyone got any idea?
Did you try to install a official firmware through odin?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Free mobile app
Yes you should try different firmwares. Maybe it's just a bug in the firmware you are using.

remains to go into service
As others have said, try using odin to flash the latest correct official firmware (not custom rom) for your region/carrier.
If this flashes successfully and you STILL have camera issues, then I think we can safely rule out software problems and say that it's a hardware issue with your handset. If changing the camera module didn't work (and you have the exact same module that your handset started with), then I'd say there is some connection issue elsewhere within the device?
Has the phone ever been water damaged or did you drop it from height?
when you are fitting any new parts, be sure to do it on a clean and clear surface, so as not to get dust inside the device. Ensure that any pins/contacts are clean so that they are making good contact with their corresponding sockets. You can also try using latex gloves or similar, as while working with electronic devices, this will help reduce any static build up to protect against shorts and also reduce dust/dirt intake into the device.
good luck!
I have now tried the very latest ROM I can find XXUFNB9 and I am still getting the same problem. I am really running out of ideas is there any connection on the motherboard that might be lose that I wouldn't touch replacing the camera module?
I have managed to get into a menu that test the camera and there is no voltage for the camera does anyone have any idea on how to fix this?

Bad suprise with fingerprint scanner after TWRP restore

So yesterday I did my first TWRP restore. Restore worked fine, device booted without issues to the lockscreen.
Lockscreen was protected by fingerprint.
To my surprise, none of my fingers were detected. Strange I thought, but hey, thats what the backup password is for.
So I entered the backup password and ... the device unlocked.
So, no big deal I thought, somehow the fingerprint data got scrambled in the restore process but the password worked.
Next step: Disable Fingerprint lockscreen / Relearn fingerprints.
Of course here I have to authenticate myself again with fingerprint (not working of course) or the backup password.
To my surprise, the device does not accept the backup password when entered in the fingerprint settings...
Uh Oh, I now thought. Well, I CAN unlock my device but entering the backup password every time is kind of annoying.
As I found no solution on how to disable the fingerprint lockscreen I was forced to factory reset the device (strangely enough during factory reset I was again asked for the backup password and it was accepted in this dialog).
So, as a warning, disable your fingerprint lockscreen before making a TWRP/CWM backup.
If someone has a tip on how I could have avoided a factory reset, I would be grateful to learn more...

Hi there, I have same bad experience with it, even worse !
after reading your post I've trying to prepare myself so I turned off the screen lock fingerprint security and full of happiness flashed new rom, then I've noticed all my data moved before to PRIVATE disappeared so they are not stored in any more at internal sd card, but somewhere else! So i've restored my previous backup from twrp but none of my fingerprints works also my password is not recognised anymore in private mode
So it looks like I lost all my files saved in private mode, I am lucky it wasn't nothing special, just random photos I've put there for tests! but anyway we need some solution for future backups, maybe improved recovery or something

Same thing happened to me today, tried restoring Echoe rom (nandroid) then smack!! fingerprint no longer works
having to factory reset
That's weird, because i did a fully nandroid backup in TWRP on my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (SM-N910F) like 4-5 days ago. I did that to try out another ROM, but i didn't like that so i restored the ROM i took a nandroid backup of.
After that, my fingerprint scanner works perfect or as good as it did before i did a nandroid backup.

well,I tried again (this time I disabled the fingerprint lockscreen before making the backup) and again, after restore, I cannot access the fingerprint settings.
Fingerprints are not recognized and the backup password does not work within the settings dialog.
Not that big of a problem as I did not use the fingerprint lockscreen.
But does anyone know a way to completely reset the fingerprint data/backup password other then making a factory reset?

No it only worked to unlock the device - but strangely enough the same backup password would not be accepted by the system for gaining access to the finger print reset settings. Very weird.. I'll be holding off restoring from a nandroid until I know the reason for this bug.
I had the same issue from a cwm restore this evening. Fingerprints not recognised on lockscreen but password is. When I goto try and re-register my fingerprints I can't access the menu with either fingerprint or backup password. Did you guys wipe the cache and dalvik cache before restoring? Could this even have an effect on the fingerprint data? I can't face having to factory reset and then setting up again
my device got effed up... I was forced to delete the stored fingerprints cause I had no options, so when I did that, the fingerprint sensor came up the an error and it said to restart, I did so many times, it didn't work, got corrupted, so I odined the firmware, no luck, we had an update, so I odined the firmware, and still didn't work, this is my 2nd device and its working great.. on the tmobile thread, it stated to delete any stored fingerprints before doing a nandroid backup, or flashing a new rom,, my 2nd phone is working fine, I have flashed and tested my roms without any issues,
try to delete any stored fingerprints, then in twrp recovery, wipe system, data, cache and dalvik, I always do that 2x to make sure everything is clean,
do ODIN and use your firmware to see if it fixes your issues,
some have had success, others had to return there devices, don't know,
Any update to this issue? Returning the device not an option anymore
Well i switched from fingerprint to pattern lock screen. No problem with that one and Cwm restore works fine too

Flashed with no luck. Still gives me error when opening fingerprint
Am I going to lose the fingerprint function forever? [emoji26]
So, what's the right thing to do if you want to install a new firmware and restore the data partition from nandroid backup?
I think:
1. Do nandroid backup
2. Unlock device, cancel all fingerprints
3. Full reset device
4. Restore nandroid of data only
5. Setup fingerprints again
Might this procedure work as expected?
Count me as another with the same problem. I even used Android Device Manager to change the backup password. It updates the screen lock password but does not update the fingerprint settings backup password. So still no solution.
There has to be a way to fix this w/ factory reset. The fact that factory reset wipes out the registered fingerprints indicates that the info is stored in /data. Where is it?
Edit: There is a "fingerprints" app. Clear data is not an option. When I select "Manage storage", I'm told that I do not have permission. If we know where the data is stored, we can wipe it and maybe start over.
Question for those who have this specific problem--do you have Xposed installed?
I started a thread here:

Maybe one should look at the log while starting over with a pristine note 4 and setting up the fingerprint recognition.

Me also, and have converted all my other devices to pattern as well. The Samsung fingerprint implementation comes with too many baggage. I would still, though, like to know of a solution to clear up the registration.

Wiping process before selling

I've been offered a decent price on my note 3 and due to upgrading to the note 5 in October I'm interested.
I want to encrypt before wiping but had some questions.
If i encrypt then do a factory reset, then input his sim in and start it up, will it then ask for the encryption key before he can use it? Or does wiping it also remove the request for a key while still keeping the original data scrambled?
Also something i can't remember from before. When i have done the reset, does it give the option to turn off ready for the first boot being when his sim is in? Or does it automatically restart so i have to allow it to boot then tell it i dont want to log in my details?
Thanks guys

Why would you encrypt the phone? [emoji33]
Factory reset means you need to set up everything from beginning.

I realise the reset starts from the beginning which is fine because I'll be selling to someone else. I needed to know whether it can be turned off right after the reset so i can turn on for the first time with the new persons sim in and he can start inputting his account details from the first boot.
I want to encrypt as apparently just resetting still enables someone to recover data.

If it was me, I will reset my phone. Copy some random files like Movies or audios and Reset again.
Which rewrites the data table..
and I have never tried this Encryption

Do it 3 times or get an app for that.
I would never buy an encrypted phone without pass.

note 4 fingerprint reset

I have a N910F 6.0.1 stock. when I go to settings and I try to change fingerprint and fingerprint backup password it says that password is wrong, but it's correct. it doesn't recognize my finger too. is there any way to reset it and add a new fingerprint without format all? I've already tried to clear fingerprint app data and cache but with no success. another way? please help.

I have same problem. I think this happen because I use dual boot patcher to dual boot note 4 with cm 13 and then I try to add fingerprint in cm13. I didn't found any solution for this.

Galaxy S7 FingerPrint error after update.

So i have recently updated my phone to the latest 7.0 software on my galaxy s7. ever since the update, my fingerprint scanner doesn't work. When i go into the system settings to try and setup new fingerprints it gives me the error "An error has occurred with the fingerprint sensor. If this message appears repeatedly, restart your device." I tried restarting the device, clearing the app's cache and data, as well as clearing the system cache in the boot menu. When i go into the FingerPrint test under the HwModuleTest(*#0*#) and perform a normal scan, everything comes back as failed. Is my only option to backup my phone and do a complete reinstall?

Try completely reinstalling QA6. I highly doubt the update caused the fingerprint scanner to start working though since it works perfectly fine on my phone.

Flash PK1 with Odin and take the ota again. When the ota is done, factory reset the phone to make sure any software issues are gone.
Should I be using smart switch to backup my contacts/messages/etc to my computer?

I also just updated my SM-G935FD via OTA to Android version 7.0.
Since then, fingerprint scanner is not working. Like for OP, all tests fail under HwModuleTest.
I tried to remove all fingerprints, but it is impossible to add new fingerprints - the error message is "Make sure that the Home key is clean and dry, then try again." Obviously, the fingerprint sensor is as dry and clean as it was before the update (when it worked perfectly).
Since then I tried, unsuccessfully:
- removing old fingerprints and adding new fingerprints (does not work, cf. above)
- formatting cache partition
- performing a hardware reset
Please advice, thanks.
P.S. I do not have access to Odin, since I do not have a Microsoft OS.
I had constant issues with the ATT firmware's fingerprint reader performance (6.x) -- wouldn't recognize my fingerprint when I tried to unlock and would often get the forced timeout.
It works flawlessly for me on the u firmware (still 6.x unfortunately). Night and day.
Same issue with me here in the UK. Just did the Nougat OTA update, having no end of issues, including the "dry home button" stuff with the fingerprint scanner. Also, the stock browser seems to have lost it's secret / incognito mode.... why can't they just leave stuff alone? Seems like my only option at this point is to downgrade back to marshmallow and put up with the annoying update notification.
Same here what do we have to do ?
