What's the best way to take OTAs when rooted? - Moto G4 Questions & Answers

I have the add free Amazon G4 XT1625. Unlocked bootloader, rooted and TWRP installed. I just downloaded the latest OTA. What is the best way to install it? Can I do it without restoring the stock recovery?

Does this work for you?

This procedure worked flawlessly for me. There is no way to get OTA's unless you restore these stock files. That said, your data will be left intact and you do have to reroot and install TWRP again.

OTA update, TWRP and bootloader...

I've unlocked the bootloader of my Razr M and installed a 10.2 ROM. Right nowI'm doing some experiments with the stock Verizon 4.1.1 ROM, restored through a TWRP backup I've done... I just need to know:
Now that I've unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP, if I accept the last Verizon OTA (98.18.78) am I going to lose the bootloader and TWRP? Basically, will I be able to get to the recovery / revert to CM10.2?
Thanks in advance!

You won't lose the unlocked bootloader but you will lose root. Also, the OTA probably won't install unless you use stock recovery and restore any apps that you got rid of. I didn't do the OTA, but these were some of the issues I've seen other have had. The simplest solution is just finding a stock ROM on here, I think there are a couple in the Dev area that are based off the latest OTA. Also, there is one on Batakang.

Trouble with latest update for Moto X Pure Edition XT1095 Verizon

Hi,
Some time ago, I unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP on my Moto X Pure Edition XT1095. I tried to root it and soft bricked it. I did have a nandroid backup and restored the phone. I recently go an update notification from Motorola and tried to install it. I forgot about having the TWRP recovery. It began bootlooping after the failed installation. I again used my backup and it's working fine again. How can I install this update? Should I go ahead and root it, then find a zip of the update? Is there a way to disable TWRP and install it? If rooting is the answer, what's the easiest way? I evidently used the wrong way the last rooting attempt.
Thanks in advance for your help!

You have options. You can flash the stock recovery, use the return-to-stock tool, flash the pre-rooted stock ROM, or flash a custom ROM. My question is, why did you unlock the bootloader (voiding your warranty) unless you wanted to root and flash custom ROMs?

The OP did state that root was attempted.
My suggestion to the OP: if you have a nandroid backup of the stock ROM that has never been rooted, then restore it, flash the stock recovery, then try to look for the OTA. If it takes and installs, reinstall TWRP, nandroid backup the new ROM, and you can proceed from there. You should be able to root the stock ROM from there. If all else fails, you can install a custom ROM that already has root built in.
Since you have the image of the updated non root unmodified stock ROM, you can easily restore later for the next update.

20s update?

I'm on 19s, with an unlocked bl and rooted. I see that the 20s update is available. If I update, will I lose root and unlocked bl? Thanks!

I bought the phone it came with stock rom 5.8.018S. I installed TWRP and flash rom 5.9.020S (T.A.R.S by Steve/Grosshop/Google Edittion), all these rom come with pre-rooted.
Once you installed TWRP and backup your system, you can flash any rom really I haven't had any issue.
Root is easy anyway, just flash Supersu via TWRP from what I read for this phone.

Thanks for your response but it doesn't answer my question about accepting the upgrade to 20s and what will or won't happen. I also have twrp installed and am rooted on 19s. Ideally, I'd prefer to upgrade without having to re-root and unlock my bl again but if that's the case, so be it. Just wanted to know beforehand.

Sorry I was not sure it's OTA update by the system or flash it by yourself when you mentioned about the update.
Why would you accept the update when you can flash all the rom available, the update can only mess up/complicate things on your phone in my opinion.
You will get same stuff as in the 20s roms.
Based on what I have read I am pretty sure you will need to re-root and unlock the BL again (because you will need to revert these changes to actually apply the OTA, it will fail otherwise). I ended up flashing a Cydras ROM because I didn't want to deal with unrooting, etc, to receive the OTA (since I already had a rooted device and it would fail OTA).
If you want to do the OTA, then you should do it before doing any root/unlock bl. I would then do the BL unlock, install TWRP, and take a backup of the system image.
Today I Gott the OTA Update for the Lex720 for s20

That's what I was afraid of. Might as well give some of the custom roms a shot if I'm going to end up wiping, etc. Thanks!

How to get OTA updates after rooting my device?

I own the 6GB Ram version of the phone and wants to root it so as to use Titanium backup to restore all the contents of my previous phone.
But the Problem is that we are still going to get some big OTA updates regarding camera and maybe more bug fixes.
I know the general procedure for rooting the device i.e. first unlock the bootloader then install a custom recovery then root.
I just wanted to ask if I just install back the stock recovery after rooting the device then will I get the Ota updates?
And I am sorry if any similar question has already been asked, I searched but didn't find any. Thanks

after that i need to flash twrp again and then install magisk again too.

i assume you know how to get root ? unlock bootloader, flash twrp, install magisk or supersu ?
well from there its just the same.
getting ota updates see attachment.
after the update you are back to stock recovery without data lost.
so just flash twrp again and install root again, thats all.

1. Unlock Bootloader and Flash TWRP
2. Flash and Download APK Magisk 13.3 (Root + Pass SafetyNet)
3. If there is a new update go to OnePlus 5 Downloads
4. Boot into TWRP and Flash the new update.
5. Everytime you flash a new update you must also flash Magisk Root.
6. Done
Should we flash twrp recovery and root zip right away after flashing full ota package??

You don't have to flash twrp recovery again.
You can flash a root zip right after flashing the full OTA package

If you installed twrp, then you can not flash incremental OTA rom.. You must always download full rom to update. Even if your phone not rooted.
Also, You could get bootloop / Brick your phone and get Relocked Bootloader and lose TWRP.
Like Rukijo said, just download the full rom (.Zip format) and flash it via recovery. You will keep the Unlocked bootloader and the TWRP.
