Verizon Activation - Moto G4 Plus Questions & Answers

A web search finds a lot of issues with activating this phone under Verizon, but few that mention success (although why would there be?). Can anyone confirm that this is no longer an issue? Thanks.

From what I've read, most of those problems have been fixed. It seems like it was also easier for people moving their active sim from another phone to the G4. There was quite a long thread on the Lenovo forums but the Verizon complaints seemed to have mostly gone away.

I can report that all's well on Verizon with an XT1644 purchased from amazon.com. although I'm underwhelmed by the dev activity thus far for the xt1644 variant, I was able to unlock the bootloader, install TWRP, root and flash a solid elementalx kernel in no time! Very solid call and data performance thus far - particularly after enabling VoLTE mode.

Nougat, Play Store and Data Roaming

So I'm in Europe for a few weeks and have been enjoying T-Mobile's unlimited data roaming while I'm here. I still try to be fair and use wifi for heavier downloads when I have access to it. I was able to update and download apps using just cellular data when I was using Marshmallow. I updated to Nougat and it no longer works. It downloads fine on wifi, and with data roaming off, when I try to download individual apps I get asked if I want to use only wifi as it will use alot of data. With data roaming on, no such question is asked and it just says pending until I connect to wifi.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there a fix?
Thanks in advance for your responses!
Just reporting back. I'm back in the US and apps now download via cellular data again so it's clearly an android nougat "feature." They should give us the option to choose as this can be be a huge inconvenience for many as it was for me.

It's stupid and annoying and they should give us the choice and not make it a default "feature"

Same
Got the same issue and can't find a solution. Anyone has an idea how to change this?
Already tried all standard settings, altering updates on roaming etc.
Not fixed yet. All options tried.
M facing the same issue and there seems to be no solution to this currently
Same here, in different device. Reverted back to MM.
Either Motorola or Google has to take this issue of 'Disabled App Download/Upgrade on Roaming' feature seriously. This is a stupid kind of thing I have ever seen. It should be the decision of end user whether to update or not to update while on roaming. With implementing this irritating feature Android is ruining it's own image. This is one of the 'Dumbest thing' ever happened in software industry.
Totally upset with it. I am facing this issues & have seen many people complaining on different community forums regarding this issue since SEP-2016.
Only God knows when Android Developers will take it seriously. May GOD en-light Google on this !

Not worried about loosing warranty by rooting?

Trying to decide between the Moto g4 or my replacement Nexus 5x. Loosing out on having a warranty if I unlock my moto g4s bootloader is a big deal as my Nexus was just replaced 8 months later under warrenty.
Well best to just stay with the 5x then

Yes, probably. I don't know how you guys deal with ads.
Don't have ads as I bought the non Amazon one. Also if you have the amazon one you can't root or unlock bootloader
Sent from my Moto G4 Plus using XDA-Developers mobile app
He was talking about the ads in general... You can't use an ad-blocker like adaway if you are not rooted. That was issue nr 1 to me.
Also, a secondary issue: I am a geek that likes to see the cell tower information. Using cellmapper, with a rooted Qualcomm device, one can see the actual LTE frequency. Not possible to see if not rooted (or non-qualcomm).
Against all rational thinking, I rooted my phone and installed xposed. In the few months that I've owned this phone, I've also tested around three different ROMs, didn't like/had bugs on every one of them, so reverted to rooted stock. I've experienced screen burn, bootloops, and soft bricks, but I still don't regret rooting my device. The best things on android are accessed after root. Warranty doesn't cover much either. Most common problems aren't covered by warranty, and I've placed enough trust in motorola to go on with this.

Thanks for the impressions!

Are you kidding me? All carriers except Verizon?

Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions, but I thought the 6P was an unlocked device agnostic to all carriers.
I'm tempted to see what happens if I flash this factory fresh on my 6P which is on Verizon.
Edit: If I were to take a guess, either Verizon only wants their Pixel line of devices on 7.1.1, or there is an actual problem.
Regardless, I may bootloader unlock my device again if Verizon gets shafted in the update for 6P
Yeah, that caught me off guard too. Killed the Dev Preview, and updated everything EXCEPT for working on Verizon. Dev Preview 2 worked on VZW, so my question is, what the heck did they break so bad that now VZW doesnt work?
Could it just be something to do with the Visual Voicemail on Verizon being cooked into the newest 7.1.1 build?
But I am no way defending Verizon from being Evil. They are the Evil CDMA Red Dragon for sure.

I would hope. We may be giving Verizon too much credit though. However I would do the opposite of complain if they did bake in VMM and Wifi Calling into 7.1.1 Nexus. Or heck, even one of those would be nice
Sooooo the real question is, who's gonna try flashing it and report back??
Really though, it must just be some sort of off the wall issue or feature that might have held it back from them alone. The 5X doesn't have the same update limit so, it's just something 6P specific. (Unless 7.1.1 brings Pixel features, and Verizon doesn't want Nexus to rain on their Pixel party just yet...)

Lol. Might want to Bootloader Unlock for that one. That is key
If i was still in Custom Rom mode for my daily driver, I'd have no problem doing so.
I just flashed it and so far calls work fine between me and another verizon phone. Messing around to see if I can find what doesn't work, if anything.
This might be a crazy idea but you might just want to flash and see if it works if it doesn't flash back to DP2 or 7.0 what is the problem?
so i flashed it, im on verizon looks like there is no sound for notifications and ringer. In settings it just shows none with no option to change, so far from what ive noticed
edit disregard that, is working

Right now I am bootloader locked with OEM unlocking unchecked. If something were to go wrong, I'd most likely be screwed. Or maybe it wont even flash for me

You can't flash anything with locked bootloader only accept official OTAs which you won't get probably because 'no verizon' so flashing it yourself is the only option really (I guess, OTAs will be rolling out to everyone over the next few days/weeks).
Everything seems to be working so far.
Created a boot.img that doesn't force encrypt. Flashed it then wiped userdata to be unencrypted. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B57DcrCR3fugajI4b3RleTlJSDg/view?usp=sharing
Then got root and adaway working using existing root stuff I had sitting around, I don't even know what the latest versions are but I used - TWRP 3.0.2, Magisk 7.0, phh superuser 17 magisk version, adaway systemless hosts v2, and adaway downloaded from f-droid.
Then flashed a zip I made with Pixel Launcher, Nexus Launcher Icons, and working stock version of the pixel Live Wallpapers with updated libs. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B57DcrCR3fugZDZaSnhYS05OSGM/view?usp=sharing
Next up: pixel navbar icons for this systemUI and build.prop edit for assistant
looks like ambient display still turns on even if set to off
I flashed it. Everything is working on vzw except Bluetooth in my GM vehicle

It's almost fully working on VZW.
The problem is, and the probable reason for that notice is, that Verizon likes to promote their devices by their sw versions. I remember when their G3 got Lollipop first........that f**kin ad was everywhere.
So I believe they would like to throw in their bloatware in to the OTA first.

Perhaps, but the DP2 radio is the same as this, and works fine for me. I'm really irritated by this, after buying from Google. It has to be some proprietary stuff to make CDMA work, except isn't sprint CDMA too? And they aren't an exception for the new release.

Well I just installed the OTA image on my Nexus 6p (which runs on Verizon). After the upgrade completed, I noticed that my data connection was not active. The phone could make calls, but no data. I tried switching in and out of airplane mode, but that didn't fix it. So I powered off the phone, then powered it back on, and all was well. I connected at 4G and everything appeared to be fine. However, I do notice is that the VoLTE setting is nowhere to be found. If I search for "voice" under settings, I see "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode". But if I click it, it takes me to the "Cellular network settings" page, which does not list that setting. I just made a test call to another Verizon phone, and it didn't sound like the enhanced voice mode was active. Not really a big deal though. I'm sure a new update will correct that before long.

Aah. Well, on DP2 I noticed I was unable to call voicemail, it just hung up on me. The fix ended up being disabling enhanced lte/hd voice in my account. I still have the vvm. As dp2 is the same version as the official, that's likely the reason a separate release will be needed. Personally, I don't care about the HD Voice, but enhanced LTE would be good to get back.

The hidden menu APK. it changes a setting from Operational mode to "Lab operation" and it enables use of GSM. So far it works with the G5, V20, and a few low end Boost mobile/Sprint prepaid LG devices.

Strange. Others are reporting working results recently guess they've never updated. Latest update on the G5 is working perfectly fine though at the moment. Sucks they have to patch the simple ways lol.

The G5 and the V20 are two different beasts as far as the software correlation..
The G5 was shipped with 6.0, the V20 shipped with 7.0, the menu options were altered to prevent unlocking with the V20 via this method..
Just as it's removed in the G6 as well.

Yeah the G5 both 6.0 and 7.0 working correctly at the moment. Hopefully it doesn't get patched. But I've never recommended using Sprint phone outside of Sprint anyway. I've never had a stable signal in fringe areas oddly.
But outside the US Sprint devices are sold on a large scale LG devices at least.
Also with 7.0 something that may assist others, with that hiddenmenu apk, you can go to the svc menu -> port check test -> enable, then set the usb connection mode to file transfer / Always and obtain your SPC/MSL using any qualcomm LG method reader.
The apk still has many uses!
It won't ever get patched in the G5, they can't as the network operation mode is a requirement since it was built in to the framework.

Awesome! Thanks for the info! I had strange issues with random battery drain and overheating during that battery drain with mine. So I got rid of it. I had a feeling something was up with a Sprint app causing it. But no one else experienced the issue.

I've been trying to get my msl from sprint for a few days now as im litterally having poor data issues where i know i have good lte. So if i do this do i just download an apk to read the msl or an exe program for windows. My main goal is to go into ##3282# menu under edit (msl) required. under lte and adjust my band priority from 25 to 3 and 26 to 2 and 41 to 1. So in theory this should work right.

North American G5 Plus - Can these be rooted without daily issues?

I know the root method works, but some people say that the camera and flashlight don't work after rooting.
Are there fixes for these issues? (Question is for North American G5 Plus's, like those sold at Best Buy and Amazon with unlockable bootloader)
They work fine after rooting. Not sure where you got that information from.

A couple of people posted this in the root thread. But if these are not widespread issues then I will buy it.
My G3 broke and the S3 is showing its age.. I'll buy this phone and root it. I need root just for a few apps (DNS changer, TB, Root call block)

You should be fine. Any issues you see will be related to the phone itself right out of the box. You may want to do a quick google search on those.

After a day of using it, WiFi seems to work fine.
My issue is bluetooth playback skipping (Google music)
Skips in my car and my portable BT speaker. Trying to find a fix.
Using Spotify seems to have fixed the issue. I'm just going to cancel my GPM and switch if that's what it takes.
edit: Spoke too soon.... going to try a custom ROM soon to see if that fixes the "skip" with bluetooth audio.
I bought a unlocked 4 gig ram/64 gig storage Potter unlocked from Best buy. I live in New York I was unlocked and on nos 8.1 in less than 20 minutes process is super easy almost 2 easy
