Hey guys. I've been highly considering this phone to replace my note 3. I currently have unlimited data on Verizon, don't plan on losing it. Have a few questions.
-Are there any limitations using this phone on Verizon?
-How do I get a sim card for it? 3rd party retail stores?
-Any significant things I should be aware of?
-If at some point I want to switch to Sprint, can I use the same phone?
Thanks guys appreciate the help
I am currently on Verizon and have had no issues. I used same sim card that I had in the Note3, just had to trim the card to fit.
Hi, I use this phone on Verizon and as far as I know you will be able to get a sim from any of Verizon's retail stores. It activated on the first try using the meid and the sim's iccid. This phone will also work on Sprint without any issues.

saying that there are no issues isn't exactly right, I have mine on Verizon and for one the visual voicemail does not work.. There's also no way to get it to work.
There are some work around you can do to get visual voicemail with Google Voice, but if you want to use HD voice you have to turn those off.
The My Verizon Mobile app does not work on here, and the Nexus version that they made for the Nexus 6 does. Or at least it would if you are willing to go and change to one of their new plans. They actually have now pay wall the Nexus My Verizon Mobile app behind a plan change. If you don't want to change your plan, you cannot log into the app anymore.
Other than that no problems whatsoever for me. You can go get a SIM card if you want at any local Verizon or you can call Verizon explain to him what's going on and will send you one for free.
This is really a world phone, you can take it anywhere. I took mine with me on vacation to Belize earlier this year and used it just fine down there.
I'd rather not cut my card, because I don't think I'm that graceful where it won't get messed up. But at Verizon they can activate the sim, and I should still be able to keep my plan?

The majority of this post is correct and exactly my experience, except that you CAN have HD calling and Google voice for voicemail. I use it daily and have no issues. This was originally thought to be true but has since been proven to work.
I got my sim from a company owned Verizon store. They did give me a little grief saying if its not recognized by their system they can't activate it, but I verified on their site before-hand that it is recognized and they looked it up to find the same thing.
So you have Visual Voicemail working with HD voice also working?
How did you do that?

No he said HD and Google Voice.
I actually prefer GV over Verizon VVM.
I get a text with the VM contents. No need to even check VM.

Exactly right. Seems to have a better grasp of the content over the VZW option as well.
I prefer Google Voice visual voicemail too (getting the texts/emails), but everything I saw when trying to get HD voice to work said that they don't and can't work together. So again I ask, how do you get those working together? I know what it is, I had Google Voice's version of it working fine before.

I had no issues when I activated my 5X onto my account with unlimited data. My plan went unchanged. I simply walked into my local Verizon store and they activated a nano sim for my 5X. I moved over from a Verizon GSIII.

There's nothing special that needs done. Just do the normal setup of GV and done. I've had Google voicemail and HD voice since day 1 when the phone launched.

This! I did standard setup and it worked fine for me with HD calling
Same here, Google Voice and HD calling, no problems. That's on all three of the family 6ps with unlimited data.
Simultaneous voice and LTE doesn't seem to be working after the update. Is there any way to get it working again?

Verizon says no
Just signed up with Verizon yesterday on the month-to-month plan with my Nexus 6P, and don't have simultaneous voice and data. I tried to enable HD calling per instructions from the net, but there's no way to do it using "My Verizon" and Verizon's tech support said they can't do it either.
So, back to AT&T, which worked great out of the box. That's $70 down the drain trying Verizon; wish they'd told me this before signing me up. The phone can obviously do it, the Verizon network can obviously do it, the Verizon chat person who directed me to tech support *told* me they could do it, but then tech support couldn't. What a crock.

Strange, works on mine and I'm on Verizon. Are you in a enhanced LTE area?

I'm in Sacramento, which has good coverage.
This is an edited-down transcript of my chat session with Verizon yesterday:
ME:
So the person I chatted with yesterday said my phone could do voice+data, but that she couldn't enable that herself (nor could I).
She directed me to customer service. I waited on hold for 20 minutes, then someone answered who said we needed to talk to tech support.
I waited on hold for just under an HOUR, only to be told, no, we can't enable voice+data.
Before I go back to AT&T, I wanted to verify one more time whether I'm out of luck with voice+data on Verizon.
Verizon:
I was able to check your account and confirmed the HD Voice feature is not available for it.
ME:
Any idea why? The net is full of people over the last year enabling it until a month or two ago.
Verizon:
Our HD enables every 4G smartphone to be able to simultaneously use data while on a call.
The reason why is because this is a new service to Prepaid.
ME:
?
Verizon:
HD voice which includes Advanced calling ( simultaneously usage of call and data) was available on Postpaid and we released it not too long ago.
You can get a list of our compatible devices on the following page: [He posted a URL, which I'm not allowed to post on xda-developers yet, but it's the vzw website, with the path smartphones/hd-voice]
ME:
I also believe that the reason my phone isn't "compatible" is because someone has decided not to put it on the list, not because it isn't technically capable. Until two days ago it was the flagship Android phone.
...and the net is full of people confirming that the 6P works with HD voice.
Verizon:
That's correct.
Is your phone and unlocked 4G phone?
Me:
yep
Verizon:
Verizon supported devices are compatible to the service.
Devices as unlocked Nexus or Motorola phones don't get the feature in our system to be added.
ME:
Why?
Verizon:
The service still has not been added to those devices.
We have our HD Voice on maintenance and there are pending devices to be added to the list of supported phones.

So, I'm back on AT&T and have data with voice again.
I'm on Verizon and have HD calling with Nougat. There was another thread a while back where other Verizon users said they had to toggle airplane mode to get it to work properly ONLY if they flashed the newest radio firmware. I just didn't flash the radio firmware with Nougat, and it's continued to work just fine.

I'm currently on Sprint, but my contract is up in about a month and the G5+ is one of the devices I've been heavily considering. But I'm looking to move away from Sprint and I've concluded Verizon Prepaid is likely my best option. Does anyone here have any experience with this device and Verizon Prepaid? Does it work okay? Are there any major issues? Any replies are greatly appreciated.
I'm just seeing your post, so not sure if you took the plunge yet. I'm VZW prepaid with this phone and it was worked fine. VoLTE is terrible so you will have to turn that off. One of the frustrating things about prepaid is your traffic is lower in tier to the regular plans so you might have connection issues in crowded places. I live in Boston and work near Fenway park. When the Sox are playing, my data connection blows.
Also the MOST ANNOYING is that I can't get visual voicemail. VVM is only available on phones that Verizon sells directly.

I have visual voice mail on Verizon on my g5 plus. I work at Verizon too. Prepaid would suck in busy area
With all the chatter about the different issues in and around cell service, I'm curious if anyone has been using the Essential Phone with MintSim. I'm on Verizon now in New York City and have my own set of issues with the phone so was thinking about trying MintSim because it's cheaper and because maybe wifi calling would work which would come in handy for me.
Anyone using MintSim care to share where they are geographically, how service has been, if wifi calling works and if tethering works?
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
Just got it today. my first boot was to my mintsim sim (haven't even had the sprint sim in it). It picked up a signal right away
Yep, Mint works fine, wifi calling works fine.
Thanks for the info. I may give mintsim a shot soon. Do you recommend it? I currently have a pretty good deal as I'm part of a multi-line Verizon account paying roughly $40 a month for unlimited but don't need unlimited.

Love them. My first year is up in 3 months. I bought a year with an additional 20% off, so 5gb has been costing me only $22/mo.
I'm buying a used Essential Sprint phone can I use it on prepaid byod? What is postpaid plan? Anyone know the cheapest single prepaid plan on Sprint?
I bought the same thing on eBay and currently use it on cricket's unlimited 2 plan for 80/month and it works on that.

Your phone must be unlocked then because Cricket uses the AT&T network, not Sprint. If the Sprint phone is locked it will only work with Sprint. It won't even work with carriers like Virgin Mobile that use the Sprint network .
Right, I did unlock the bootloader and flashed 8.1 but when I first turned it on the Sprint stuff was on it and was advertised as Sprint essential phone. I put a Sprint mnvo card in and it wouldn't work so I ended up unlocking it when I flashed it?? IDK it works for me so maybe it'll work for you?
You can use it on the Sprint free BYOD plan. It is postpaid and you will need to pass a credit check but it'll end up running you ~$5/mo for a year.
You'll need to buy a compatible sim if your phone didn't come with one. The $10 boost Mobile SIM starter pack has two cards that are compatible.

Be prepared to spend a few hours on the phone across multiple calls and perhaps a trip to the store to complete the credit check. Sprint is the worst to deal with.
