Most durable phone has finally cracked. Repair help - Mate 8 General

My wife was surprised how long this phone has lasted me when I told her the news. Still usable and running like a champ.
Has anyone replaced LCD yet. Normally I sell it or something but nothing better is out yet.
My issue is getting generic unbranded screens with bad quality.
Need oem LCD with frame.

well if you can last another 2 months, the mate 9 should be out by then ^^

I'm buying the screen and replacing the body while I'm at it for only $75. But found someone online with oem parts.
But yes mate 9 will be my next phone. I pray it has a 2k screen.

im pretty sure it will have a 2k screen, with VR being all the rage... good job on finding the parts for such a good price!

2k kills battery no thanks.
As for the repair OEM screens are almost always LOCA refurbished LCDs. They are generally branded off as new to please the consumer.

Unlucky or poor QC?

About to return my 4th Nexus 7.
1 - Screen bleed (C60)
2 - Screen lift (C70)
3 - Died/stopped charging (C80)
4 - Screen flicker at low brightness (C90)
Do ASUS do any QC before sending these things out? I love the device (number 3 was great for 6 weeks until it died) but concerned about whether the replacement will break. Are others having similar problems or am I just really unlucky? Getting tempted to cut my losses and get a refund.

Sample testing, probably. They'll pull a device every x number of devices produced and run it through some tests.
It does seem like Asus is letting the QC be done by the end user after the device has left the factory.

You are very unlucky based on my n=3 sample of Nexus 7 owners
None of us have any such problems :fingers-crossed:
Unlucky. I ordered two, and both are perfect. But sometimes you get unlucky. I had three bad blackberries in a row once, and BB were not known for bad QC. Just luck of the draw.

Unlucky is my guess. I have a C8O and perfect out of the box. Perhaps get a refund and go to another retailer to try to break the bad luck.

Keep number 4 and put tape over the WiFi GND to fix the flicker. Doesn't impact WiFi signal in any noticeable way.

I think they all have the low backlight flicker issue however if you disable Prism it stops. This means it's software not hardware and could be addressed by Google someday.
Or document your string of bad luck on devices and work your way into a free upgrade to a 32gb n7. Win!

Thanks for the responses. I returned it today. None of the previous ones had that flicker that the last one had. It was REALLY noticeable.
If the 32gb one comes out next week I'll give it a shot. :good:

Awwww! That looks really ugly to even serve the purpose as paper weight.. IMHO the part replacement cost for this piece would be more than buying a new one off eBay.

Damn is that thing rough.
Don't get it. Him saying "I think it still boots" means it likely doesn't. Replacement screen and battery are more than what you'd spend on the unit.

htc one m8 middle east users

I'm sure most of us arabs have an htc one m8 now so like other countries threads time to make ours
i bought my m8 from Viva Bahrain, the good thing is that it came with a rubberized tpu cover from htc in the box which afaik is not available in the US version, also just got an OTA to 1.54.401.10
I was gonna bought it from batelco but it was out of stock also they said they only have the silver, then i bought it from zain.
$385 on-contract for one year is too expensive but i'm happy with the new network

yea same thing happened with me, i bought it at night for 59 bd down payment, and the next morning they announce free without any downpayment
guys dont get too excited about the TPU cover, you can get the awesome awesome Baesus air case TPU for only 7$ on aliexpress
now allow me to explain why do we get the TPU cover included:
its because unlike the primary world we are being screwed with 16GB internal rather than 32GB, this is why the cover is compensation
the cover itself is not that great as it kills the device beauty and also might cause scratches because of all the specs that can get stuck inside, plus affects touch-ability due to the thick edges and the port flip at the bottom is simply a joke
the only good thing about it is that it insures you protection from day one that's it, make sure to clean it well every time you place the phone inside it as it can ruin your grey M8 in time if any sand particle gets stuck inside
best official cover so far for the M8 is the standard flip case from HTC
Also, ours is 2.3GHz...as compared with 2.5 elsewhere...

i had a non shiny part in the silver surrounding and i got a first day replacement device now my other device having extra brightness above HTC logo ( like a light leak ) phone is going back to HTC i guess but now need to relock bootloader and do this **** i hope they replace my device again instead of replacing the screen only because i already got too much scratches on both rear and front camera . this phone needs protection everywhere.......
just a tip for whoever new with this device protect your rear and front cameras and dont use the case you get with the phone as @hamdir said it will cause scratches on the silver surrounding...
oh yes and I'm from Oman but my phone is from Comtel (U.A.E).

We had an HTC dealer here in Oman but now we dont. I repaired my HTC one X infamous WiFi signal problem under warranty when we had a dealer here. They told me it's sent to UAE don't know if it was comtel but my phone have been unlocked (relocked) when sent. Now the same thing with HTC one m8. Do Comtel reject rooted phones in any case or only when phone is bricked?

2.5ghz is just bull**** so no worries, stop running behind cpu clocks people its not what makes these phones great (gpu, bandwidth, thermals, nand all more important)
Why else does the battery lasts this long and still run so well with the power saver 1.3ghz cap
Apple didn't even cross 1.5ghz
Stop chasing ghost cpu clocks, they only accelerate throttling
I agree with Hamdir,
Clock speed is irrelevant. I am coming from a Nexus 5 and I don't honestly see a "significant" speed boost, granted the Nexus 5 is highly optimized by google. Still the bottom line is if while operating the phone you don't experience any lags (in the M8's case thats far from it) then speed is irrelevant. I am pretty sure you could possibly even under clock and not notice a huge drop in performance.
Cheers.
Actually power saver mode locks the CPU at 1190mhz. Phone still smooth yes it might lag abit in some apps like Twitter but it's very usable with great battery. The phone is perfect! The only thing that annoys me are the cameras not the quality but the lenses! They get scratched pretty easily and I didnt know that when I was always cleaning the lens using shirts.

You can always buy a new screen from aliexpress. They're actually not too hard to replace by yourself.
Replace it by yourself or find a place that allows you to bring your own parts.

When you say any vendor, there are loads of little shops that say they do phone repair but look a little dodgy and do loads of other things too - are these safe?!
Also, there seems to be a bit of a spectrum of replacement screens (high quality / original etc)
I'm guessing none of them are actually original, so is there anything I need to look out for to get a good one?

Screen Replacement isn't that big of a Deal..
So relax Find a Good mobile shop and there u go..
As Far as screens are concerned no screen is Orignal unless u are getting it from the Service Center...
So u have to settle for less. Just get the screen for the specific phone exactly and u are good to go
Thanks all. Can anyone tell me roughly what the cost is likely to be if i take in a screen to a place and say - do it for me?
I have found somewhere that will post the phone and do the repair for £50
Looking on AliExpress then the screen is £20 (+ long wait or postage cost)
So if it's around £20 then seems like i may as well just use the service here (https://www.quickmobilefix.com/products/xiaomi-mi-a1-front-screen-lcd-repair)
I'm going to call them to check they have a screen in mind - don't want to send it off and then find they themselves have to order from china...

Hi, I will give you my input input on this matter now. The tools required are most of the time included with the replacement screen, also you will have to buy the entire thing (LCD with touch). LCD from Aliexpress for cheap xiaomi is most of the time original LCD but with copied glass and touch. I've bought two different for redmi note 4 and both were pretty much like the original. Working perfectly so far after about 3 months.

So went into local store and they said they'd need to order it or it's £20 if i order myself...
So, going to order myself, but one more question - I see there are versions 'with frame' or 'without frame' - which do i need?
Edit - I also see LCD and Digitizer only options too (much cheaper)

A frame one is probably quite easy to replace. Non-frame needs special adhesive tape or glue which is often quite hard to get and can lead to light leakage. Also, if you're replacing yourself, make sure the case of the phone has'nt been bent. Otherwise over time it can make the new display get pushed out or crack easily again. Also, I do recommend a screen protector for non-original display because they get smudged easily.

Mine is but shutdown prob sometimes
I bought a 2nd one so I'm a bit paranoid about going all in and using it as my main device only for it to BLOD on me at some point.
The 6P was and still is my favorite phone. Loved the design and performance and camera, battery life was poor though.
I've owned about 5 over the years. My latest one got used for a good while and is now used as a backup phone in the family and still ticks along okay, battery is shot though!
My current pixel 2xl which I just bought second hand feels a lot like the 6P did, which is nice to see.
Mine ?
Cool. So not every phone is a lemon?
Funnily enough I bought a 2nd hand pixel 2 XL and I thought the screen was terrible - it was just way too blue. So I sold it and bought the N6P. The screen is much better then the pixel IMHO plus I put £100 in my back pocket.

I bought a 2nd hand pixel 2XL for £90 and am selling it already, crap battery (compared to my Moto Z Play) and the mobile reception was poor, even compared to the 6P.
Screen isn't bad, but can't forgive the reception and the battery.
£90 is a very good price for a pixel 2 XL. The battery on the pixel 2 I had was decent but the screen was poor for the price.
I am using it right now actually. Whenever I decide to get rid of it, I start using it again and it's so smooth and good to hold.
Maybe I could just replace the battery....
The mobile reception is a pain though. It isn't awful, but it is worse than my previous phones.
mine got into a bootloop last year n the power button is broken so theres really no saving it. ended up going with a galaxy s8+ duos. only thing i miss is the smooth n stable aosp roms tbh.

i bought my 6P refurbished in late 2017 and i dont think that the class action applies to me since i didnt purchase the phone from google or a service provider.
Mine (128 GB) is still going but the battery is worn out. drains fast when used and shuts down around 30%. just moved to a Moto last weeks as a primary. VZ warranty offered to replace my 6p with a Moto z Force or reimburse for battery replacement.. Other than than it looks like new and works quite well still.
Got mine yesterday. Abit battered but it works. Battery replaced and all working good on full 8 cores. Doesn't heat up much either? going to replace housing and it will look new again.

Mine was a 2 xl in black. Screen was fine. Broke because of water damage, no rescuing it. So bought one from a mate of mine. He hadn't used it in a while so sold me it dirt cheap replace battery and housing and looks good as new.
I have a Pixel 2xl that broke. I'm out of town and won't be home for a month, to get it fixed. But I have my trusty 6p as back up. I bought it brand new, when they came out. I forgot what a darn good phone it is. It's one of my all time favorites. Still going strong. I'm so glad I kept it.
