Home long press no longer launched Google - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Up until yesterday long pressing the home button on my 6p reliably launched Google Search. Until it stopped and now I can't get it to come back. I can feel the double vibration, but there is no action associated with it. Tried wiping cache but no luck. Tried booting in safe mode but, ironically, the phone goes into a bootloop, I am guessing because of the Xposed framework. Any suggestions? Google has lots of old threads on the topic buy they mostly have to do with third party apps.

Try without Xposed installed. Then try without your Xposed modules. Then try with a clean install of your rom.

Yeah, these are the actions of last resort when nothing else works. They will eat so much time I would rather wait for Nougat to get xposed and then just wipe and reflash everything.
In the mean time I have tried a few other things. Disabled all xposed modules but it still does not work. Used GravityBox to set middle button long press to launch search, does not work. Most interestingly, set GB to launch search with a long press of the back button. That did not work either, suggesting that the problem is with the call to the search app, not the home button function itself. Erased cache and data for the Google app no luck. Switched from Nova to Now no luck.

Home button screwing up

I am running cm10, and my home button (hard or soft) does not work. the screen just turns blank then goes back to the app i was on. sliding the home button up to get to GNow doesn't work either. this happens with every app and nightly version i use since 11/19. i have reflashed, cleared caches, etc. and found that the error was in my data partition- and more specifically, one of my apps. here is a link to my logcat when i pressed the soft home button:
http://pastebin.com/udGmNByF
and here is the list of all the folders in my /data/app folder:
http://pastebin.com/ZugMN6k1
If you need anything else, just ask. Thanks!

I would guess that one of your installed apps has captured your home button then is crashing when it tries to use it. To find out which one it is, temporarily install a third party launcher like zeam or adw and the next time you press the home button a list of eligible apps that can use the home button pops up. Your bad app is probably on that list. Chose the new launcher, make it default and see if your problem goes away.

That didn't work, it just turned black again. Would only an app with su permissions be able to do this, or any app at all?
By "do this", I mean screw up the home button. Also, I wiped the data, and it worked fine, but after I installed all of my apps, it stopped working again. Also, I am running some other apps that aren't from the Play Store (well they are, but the apk's were downloaded from another source). Would those external apps be the culprit?

They do not need su access to capture the home button. When you say reinstall, do you mean reinstall, or do you mean restore with a backup program. The latter usually restores the app's data with it and recreates your problem.

I mean reinstall, like from the play store, but it did it automagically when i logged into google play, i didn't need to go to each app and install it.
Would the external apps be a problem?
Also, I know that in the Manualnooter for the stock OS there is an app called "Homecatcher". would that help at all?
Okay- I looked through the logcat and guessed what the issue was- lock screen was disabled.
I re-enabled it through the notification bar, and home button is fine. Any reason why this might be? And how would I make it so that I can disable the lockscreen again?

Dont let play store install them all at once. Back them up with TB and reinstall them one by one until your problem re-occurs. And do it without the data. Don't know about homecatcher. That is for stock.
Okay, I've narrowed theproblem down more. If the NC boots with the lock screen enabled, you are fine, even if you disable it. But if it boots with the lock screen disabled, then the home button will not work until you re-enable it and unlock the device. After you e-enable it, you can disable the lock screen again. Not anything major, but definitely an annoyance. Should I report this in the CM10 thread and ask them to fix it? Sorry if I sound like a big ******* taking their work for granted, but I don't have a 64-bit computer to build on. If I had one, I would prbly fix the problem myself. Oh well, thta's what Xmas is for. (A bit off topic from this thread, but is the Acer C7 Chromebook 64-bit? If it is then i would just hack ubuntu on it then build off of that.)

Nexus 4 KitKat 4.4 Issues

So I followed the instructions to go from ParanoidAndroid to Stock, and I chose to stock to 4.4... now I'm having issues.. strange ones.
1) The Home Key doesn't do anything.
2) The lockscreen is non-existent
3) When I press and hold the power button, all I get is "Power Off".. no other options.
4) I don't get notifications, and when I pull down the notifications menu, none of the functions work (User settings, Date & Time, etc.)
5) If I use the "stock launcher", I continuously get "Launcher has crashed" error, never goes away.
Any help with any of this? I've been trying to fix it for hours.
Thanks in advance, guys..

Make sure it is connected as MTP. Try uninstall and reinstall the drivers. I had a hard time finding the drivers before as I am using 64bit win7. Drivers I found before had some troubles as it was not signed..so I can't use in on 64bit os. If all else fails..use airdroid to transfer your files. Good luck.

Same issues here. I flashed it via fastboot. Used the "flash-all.bat" script, but took out the "-w" option so it wouldn't wipe my data.
I'm having the exact same issues but going from stock 4.3 to 4.4 ota when the notification showed up saying I was good to go. Never been rooted at all.
My opinion on this update
well my opinion on this update is that it seems as though it was rushed and for some reason they didnt include the google experience launcher... like why would you announce and then not release

Google have never announced the Google launcher.
Google have never said they will release the launcher for devices other than the Nexus 5.
Google have never called it Google Experience Launcher.
It doesn't take any effort to make it work on the N4.
Update
Here's an update: One other issue I had was my phone would not work if someone called me. I could call out, but calls to my phone went to voicemail. I decided to put Android 4.3 back on...but then the thing got stuck at the Nexus X screen. I flashed a couple of times, but nothing. The one thing I didn't want to do was lose my data...just a pain. One thing I did while dealing with the 4.4 issues, was copy over my data.
I had to end up re-flashing everything losing my data. I basically used option "D" from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34552123&postcount=1
I would think there is a way to fix the 4.4 problems, however, not having my phone work really wasn't an option. I could deal with the home button, notifications, etc...
Oh...about 10 minutes after I was finally back in 4.3, I get a notification that 4.4 was downloading. A bit later I was able to install using the OTA and it worked! Now I'm on 4.4. I haven't rooted it, and I'm pretty sure I've lost CWM, but after spending 3 hours or so dealing with this...even getting the "red" light at one point, I think I'll call it a day. Just thought I'd update for others.

Im having the exact same issue but I installed the official OTA update. Will probably try flashing like you did. Haven't seen this issue posted anywhere else.
Over the air update also gave same symptoms (and a couple more)
Dear All,
I got the update pushed over the air automatically and clicked to update thinking all was going to be fine
I am having all the symptoms listed, and I can add 2 more for the sake of completeness (and to highlight the annoyance):
1-When clicking on links from Google Now results or any app other than Chrome (I do not have other browsers installed), Chrome gets launched (or switched to), but it reloads the last open tab instead of loading the link.
2-The double finger down swipe to access the profile is not working (and I did not find a way to access it, since clicking on the little profile icon in the empty notification screen I get with the single finger swipe down, also does not work, it does not even click).
For some reason, until I rebooted Email did not work (it kept sitting in "checking" the inbox, but was not able to get messages).
Really bummed that this happened with an updated pushed by Google on my Nexus4. Will try to follow recipes to back-up my data.
I am new to forum/android: is there a direct way to submit feedback to Google team? Does it make sense to try to do so? It would be nice to know what caused the problem and I'd be happy to send debugging input for them.
I guess next time I'll wait on the fence a bit before updating the operating system.
Thanks,
Gabriele
Maybe you guys need to do factory reset after the update. I know it's quite a hassle as all your data will be gone. Just backup whatever things you need and reset it.
Clean install here. Never had any issues and kitkat works great even on dalvik.

Google support solution
Dear arffrhn and all,
I finally managed, after a lot of frustration to talk with Google support (had to go through Google Play Help center, and pursue "apps" help to get to click on a "Call us" button, and they called me to a landline in Europe within 15 seconds).
Once I got transferred to hardware support, Eveline mention how she believed the issue was with some "glitch" during the update... she told me that in many cases a cache partition clear would be enough, but if that did not work, a factory reset should do it.
She guided me through the first process:
Clear cache partition.
1. Hold power button for 2 seconds and select 'Power Off'
2. Press and hold the Volume Up and the Volume Down and Power keys at the same time for about 10 seconds.
3. An image of an Android lying on its back will appear.
4. Press the Volume Down key twice until "Recovery mode" appears on the screen.
5. Press the Power key to restart in "Recovery mode."
6. An image of an Android with a red triangle will appear.
7. While holding down the Power key, tap the Volume Up key.
8. The Android System Recovery screen will appear. Release all keys.
9. Use the Volume keys to scroll to wipe data cache partition and press the Power key to select.
10. The phone will restart.

Unfortunately this was not enough to fix my problem... still same symptoms.
So she offered to help me back-up my data, I had already used AirDroid to back up all the files, apps, pics, videos etc so I preferred to stay on the line and proceed with the factory reset in case that would not work.
Here are the steps:
Factory data reset.
Please note that performing a factory data reset on your device will return your phone or tablet to its original state. I'd recommend backing up and saving any photos, videos, music, or other items you might have stored on your device's local memory. If you have a device with an SD card (for instance, a Samsung Galaxy S 4 Google Play edition), your media content (photos, music, etc.) stored there will not be deleted.
To perform a factory reset:
Go to Settings > Backup & reset.
- Press Factory data reset
- Press Reset
After you perform the factory reset, you'll need to sign into your device with the same primary Google account you were using before in order to sync your purchased apps and other content.
If you're unable to get to your Settings menu, follow the steps below:
1. Power down your device
2. Press and hold both volume keys and the power button to enter Bootloader mode
3. Press the volume keys to cycle to the Recovery mode option
4. Press the power button to select Recovery mode
5. From the Recovery mode screen, press and hold the Power button then press the Volume up button.
6. Use the volume buttons to select wipe data/factory reset.
7. Select Yes -- delete all user data.
8. The factory data reset process will now start. Once its finished, select 'Reboot system now.'

Click to collapse
I was able to access my Settings menu, so I did not need to follow all the steps, but just do the data/factory reset.
The phone came back up asking usual personalization questions, and it all was fixed... now I have to spend a few hours getting back my apps, data, settings, etc... but my problem was solved without having to re-flash or anything like that.
I filed a feedback about the abysmal situation of the Google Play help center and asked the two support people I spoke with to raise the issue internally... when I selected the natural line of help (device, technical support) after a couple of screens I got to a blank "Select device" screen that was a dead end. I had to go though apps support that only offered phone support... but in the end it worked.
Hope sharing this will help others! Not sure whether I should peek into the Google Experience Laucher eventually... back to work for now!
Cheers,
Gabriele
PS
The steps quoted above were sent by Eveline after our conversation was over, in case I needed to use them again. She mentioned that if I were to have more problems they could look into a potential hardware failure of my almost our of warranty Nexus 4.

So I have turned off automatic updates in developer options and I am still seeing am update notification. I would rather not suppress all notifications from Google Play Services. Is there any other way to deal with this?

Stock ROM? If yes, why would you not want to update? If you are stock, rooted and maybe a kernel, there are ways to update quickly and not lose those. If a custom ROM, you may also find help in the ROM specific sub-forum.
I no longer trust Google to do the right thing with these updates. The latest fiasco where they are trying to force the half baked Google assistant down my throat is an example.
I am stock rooted with Elementalx and do my updates once every couple of months manually through flashfire. I don't want the notifications hanging around my status bar for months at a time, and I don't want to completely silence all notifications from Google Play Services.
Finally, prior to the latest update that forced GA on me, thesr notifications were never present. I suspect that Google changed something with the February update. One more reason to wait a while before committing to an update.

I don't blame you on wanting to manually update on your own schedule vs. OTA. I've always updated using full images. At first manually with fastboot, then later with FF. Is your bootloader locked? Thing is I never get update notifications *ever*. I'm stock, rooted, EX Kernel and of course my bootloader will always be unlocked. Maybe that is the difference?
On the other subject, I'm pretty sure GA is here to stay. It's integrated into those two key Google components and get updated on the fly all the time, independent of security updates. Why not just turn off GA in settings and use GN with voice deactivated? It should never bother you there. I use Nova, so the only way I ever see GA it is if I intentionally launch it.
I thought I saw a bunch of old posts about deleting YadaYada.apk from /system/app or priv-app which will remove update notifications. Check to see if you have that apk.

When you deactivate GA it does NOT relinquish the long press of the home button to its previous functionality. Instead it pops up an annoying message saying "GA is deactivated, do you want to reactivate". If you answer "Yes" GA comes back with a vengeance. If you say "no" then it simply does nothing, and next time you long press the home button the same stupid dialog is back.

OTA: Since you have manually toggled the auto updates to "off" have you tried wiping cache/dalvik? In the meantime, why not flash N4F26T and give yourself a breather for a month. It's just a security update.
GA: You're just gonna have to let your OCD go and not long-press the home button, dude. Don't tell me you used GN On Tap several times a day and want it back? C'mon. How about re-assigning the long press button? A launcher like Nova may be a solution. Reassign home button long-press used to be in Labs but I don't see it now. You can do a million things with home button short-press. Nova really is the best launcher ever.

I am running Nova, but the reassignment there only works when Nova is active. The home long press works from anywhere. I think there are other apps out there to allow this, GravityBox on Xposed worked well but Xposed seems to be dead.

This blocks ALL notifications from Google Play Services. Don't want that. On occasion GPS asks that I re-login or update, those notifications will be gone too if I block as you suggest. Xposed used to have a really nice module where you could only block specific notifications, but with Xposed seemingly dead for Nougat this is no longer an option.

Disable Bixby Vision Pop-up In Camera?

Has anyone figured out how to disable the obnoxious notification to enable Bixby Vision every time you open the camera app??
It doesn't seem to matter how many times I close it, it continues to pop up every time I open the camera.
The popup doesn't show anymore after you actually try it. Worked for me.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot.
I'm kinda screwed I guess because I completely disabled Bixby and I see that stupid popup every time. Guess I'll need to re-enable Bixby, tap that shortcut, and disable it again.

What did you use to disable Bixby, and what happens now when you accidentally hit that button? TIA.

I used BK Package Disabler on the Google Play Store. It was $1.49. Completely disabled Bixby and used All In One Actions to remap the Bixby button to launch Google Now. Works perfectly!

Did you take any software updates yet since getting the phone? I'm just curious if BK Disabler will still work properly after taking the update that killed the Bixby button remap.
I was using BxActions to remap the button, but I knowingly took the update (TMobile) anyhow. It would be nice to disable Bixby completely, maybe this Disabler you used is the way to go.
I think the phone downloaded an update during setup but so far I'm good to go. Maybe those updates are Carrier-specific? I'm on Verizon. If my Bixby button remap gets killed I'll let everyone know.
The BK Package Disabler still works on my Verizon S8+, even after today's update. I don't know about the key mapper.
I bought PD Pro this AM and tried disabling Bixby Vision. It made the camera crash every time I opened it. I restored it ok. Now I am going to try the "use it once" method that I missed the first time.
What about disabling the popup when you go to view photos in the gallery? That still seems to have the popup, even after using it once.
Still can't rid my phone of this annoyance ..Ridiculous !!!

Disable Bixby Vision Pop-up In Camera
Delete this foler by rootexplorer /system -app - VisionIntelligence
I'm not sure how, but I'm no longer getting the popup. Been at least 4 days since I last had it when opening the camera app. Never actually tried out the feature either. Maybe it just stops after so long? I'm not sure.
If you go through the prompt to start the bixby vision you're then agreeing to all their sharing terms which I don't want to do.
Additionally it's bringing up this little dot on every picture in my gallery and if you click the dot it wants to launch the bixby thing again. This is soooo annoying

Dangit, is there a way to remove it without agreeing to share data( launching Bixby requiring sharing with inrix 4square and uber?!)
Thx for the camera tip. Bixby is really invasive. I hate it.

Has anyone figured out how to disable the obnoxious notification to enable Bixby Vision every time you open the camera app??
It doesn't seem to matter how many times I close it, it continues to pop up every time I open the camera.

It's VERY easy to disable the popup.
Long press anywhere on the homescreen, then swipe left and you will see a little slider to turn bixby on/off.
Just select OFF and voila.....no more annoying bixby popup in the camera app!!
press thanks If I helped

Now on Tap is Gone?

Not sure if this is the right place, but XDA was always the best place in the past. I've got my V20 on T-Mobile and for some reason, Google Assistant came back again replacing my Now on Tap. I tried my usual trick of uninstalling the updates for the Google App and then rebooting, but this time it doesn't remove the Assistant on the long press on the Home button. I am running stock, so my options are limited. Any advice?
