Moto G4 Play on Sprint - Moto G4 Play Questions & Answers

Will the Moto g4 play work on sprint? I know it says it does, but I've been looking to buy the Amazon one for $99 but there are a few 1 star reviews from people staying they attempted to activate it on sprint and weren't able to. Anyone successfully using it on sprint? Also, to get it to work, can I just swap the sim from an active sprint phone to the Moto g4 play? Or do I have to contact sprint to change the imei as well?
Thanks!

Yes it absolutely does work on Sprint. Those lazy people obviously didn't bother clicking the live chat button when it failed to activate through the Sprint website, or call customer care when it didn't activate on boot.
I had mine up and running 10 minutes after it was delivered by clicking the chat button when it failed to activate, and the customer care rep activated it with no trouble at all.
Be aware, though, the ad version of the phone for $99 has a locked bootloader, so you're going to be stuck with the ads, no root, and stock rom. If that's not acceptable to you, I recommend spending the extra $50

Thank you! That's exactly what I needed to know. I realize the bootloader isn't unlockable and the ads aren't removable.

Glad I was able to help!
It's a surprisingly awesome little phone, too. I am very happy with it, and I think I'm going to keep using it even after my LG G4 comes back from their repair center and save the LG as a backup phone. The battery life on the moto g4 play is fan-damn-tastic. (I just plugged mine in... after 21 hours and 45 minutes off the charger, and 11 hours 0 mins 4 secs screen-on-time)

hello!
Can you post the filesystem used in /system and /data on this device?

I bought 3 of those and activated on Sprint. No problems activating, but 2 out of 3 have 3G only. 4G LTE never comes up. Sprint gave up both on the phone and in store and told me to go back to motorola. IT's also confusing what SIM card should be used for those. You can't use SIMGLW446C that is recommended for Moto 4g ,as it's nano, and Moto Play needs micro. I tried to go by this list
http://www.prepaidphonenews.com/2016/07/how-to-determine-which-sprint-sim-works.html
Sprint gave me SIMGLW236C, it activates, and works but 2 out of 3 will only go to 3G. Anyone had the same problem?

You can have a nano sim in the micro sim slot, it's very tedious to get it seated properly though. My old phone had a Nano-sim slot and I didn't feel like spending $10 just for a micro sim through H2O. You can also simply buy a nano to micro sim adapter for a dollar or two on eBay or Amazon

Could you guys tell me what modem/radio firmware version is working for you?
Sprint gave me the SIMOLW506C card, which they told me would work with this device, and it's activated in my Sprint account… but absolutely no connectivity at all. SIM card keeps locking and restarting and the Testing menu shows it jumping into "LTE/GSM" mode instead of "LTE/CDMA auto (PRL)"

Answering my own question/ problem bringing Moto 4G phone from Sprint MVNO to native Sprint.
Problem:
I had 3 Moto G4 Play phones. One new 2 others coming from Ringplus. The new one went on sprint with no problems and showed 4G LTE instanteneously. the 2 other ones from RingPlus (worked fine there with 4G LTE), refused to connect to sprint at 4G LTE (3G only). Sprint phone and store support were useless. Finaly i found the problem and the solution. RingPlus changed default APN and that is what was breaking it.
The solution:
The Moto G4 Playu doesn't have an APN Settings menu. So, I downloaded an app called "Change APN" from play store which is basically a shortcut to the APN Settings.
1) Reset to defaults from menu.
2) edit sprint APN (the first one in the list).
3) Now enter the following APN settings information:
Name: Sprint
APN: cinet.spcs
Proxy: blank
Username: blank
Password: blank
Server: Not set
MMSC: blank
MMS Proxy: 68.28.31.7
MMS Port: blank
MCC: 234
MNC:15
Authentication type: not set
APN Type:default
APN protocol:IPv4
4) Save from menu
Go to "Network mode" and change to LTE. Got the LTE icon
I also had to change CDMA settings from NV mode to RUIM/SIM mode.

I don't think that app is available anymore. What do people do now to change the APN info on a G4 Play?

a think you can still get apk from other sources like:
https://apkpure.com/change-apn/it.appando.app.changeApn/download?from=details
or just search the store and see what works.

I think there are changes you have to make to the settings.
I would check NotionInkHacks forums to find the threads on that.

this may or may not be related to your problem, but did you add in the AT&T APN into your NI and have you tried your SIM card into a phone that can handle data on the AT&T network?
To input the APN info goto settings, Wireless & network settings, Mobile networks, access point names. Click your second to last button and click New APN. If the info for the field isn't provided below, leave it blank.
APN info:
Name: whatever_you_want_the_name_to_be
APN: wap.cingular
Username: [email protected]
Password: cingular1
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com

I can confirm this works. The tablet does everything except receive phone calls.
Adam + AT&T Data only plan for Tablets.
I went to the store asked about this, the rep didn't know how to activate the Tablet Plan on a 3rd party Tablet. He suggested I call Customer Service. I asked him for a SIM to take with me when I call so I could save time and get it working.
I called CS, talked to about 6 reps~, they tried. The main issue was getting past the accepting the terms and conditions via the phone system (IVR), it kept coming back with Unable to process due to technical problems with their system and it would transfer me back to a rep. Reps tried this themselves with me on the line.
BTW, the reps bent over backwards to help. One of the most helpful, I got disconnected while calling another department and working with a supervisor. She called me back a few mins later, says she didn't call me back right away because she wanted to finish her call and have a definitive answer.
She said I would have to return to the store and have them set me up with a dummy tablet to activate the account, then make the appropriate changes in their system.
So today I went to a AT&T retail store once again, but armed with those notes in the account. The rep called, they told him he couldn't do it. So he called another department, had them activate my account using a dummy phone under a voice plan.
Once active he made changes in the account, entered a dummy tablet IMEI then changed to the $25 /2G data plan.
I popped in the SIM, ran through the steps of enabling it on the Adam. 3G icon appeared, tested surfing Google.
I had already added an APN, only editing two things, name AT&T, APN broadband, left everything else default and it worked (this is for data only, voice/data plans require more info edited).

[HELP] Got AT&T sim into International S3, calling works but data doesn't work

I got an international S3 from India and went to AT&T store to get a micro sim.
Got that installed and then the phone calling works fine but data (internet) doesn't work.
They said they would have to register my phone's IMEI but it still doesn't work. They put in a new APN, and still same. They called their tech and they couldn't help. Their last suggestion was to try calling Samsung, but I had to leave to get to work.
I believe there are already people using International version with AT&T for the S3. So any ideas what could be wrong?
Thanks!
Try factory resetting your phone. Other than that, make sure you have the $10/month data plan (unlimited messaging required) or the $15/month data (no messaging required). To do that you'll have to call into customer care and say you have an unlocked non-smartphone. If you go into the store to do this they'll give you the more expensive internet because they'll see you have a smartphone. If you're changing data plans it CAN take 24-48 hours for it to be effective, although it usually doesn't take that long. After that's done go into Settings, More Settings (under Wireless and Network settings), Mobile Networks, and then Access Point Names. Make sure there is an Access Point Name titled "Cingular 410". If there isn't then press Menu, and then "+ New APN". The settings should look like this:
Name: Cingular 410
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
User name: [email protected]
My Password field is auto-filled, so I don't have that. Try leaving it blank, but if that doesn't work call customer care and get that information.
Server: cingulargprs.com
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: Not set
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: Not set
APN type: default,supl,mms
APN protocol: IPv4
Enable/disable APN: Checked (this field is grayed out for me, but it is checked)
Bearer: Unspecified
This should fix it. The only thing I'm unclear on is the Password part.
Password is (all caps): CINGULAR1

Well now my SIM is completely unregistered, can't even make calls. Operator asked me to go to the store and get a new SIM Card.
So, this won't work without the switch to the non-smartphone data plan? It is going to be hard to pull off when I am in the store.

It should work just fine on the smartphone data plan, and you should be able to switch to the non smartphone data plan afterwards.

Ok, thanks. What should I tell the AT&T store people today when I go in the evening?
It feels like they did something on the account to screw it up. Would it help to suggest that they get this working on an AT&T HTC OneX and then transfer the SIM to my phone?
It could be that you have a defective SIM card. Take it one step at a time. Replace the SIM card. Make sure you have functionality with other services (such as voice and messaging). Check all the APN settings to make sure those are correct. Make sure you have a data plan for AT&T.
I'm on another carrier but I had the same problem at first, only phone call and sms working. I had to change my APN for the Data to work.

What are the APN settings you input, did you save and select it afterwards?
EDIT: Check the settings in the screenshots on the first posts of this thread, yours should match.
Thanks, I went back to the store. We got my original S2 working and this time switched to micro sim without making any IMEI/etc changes and it worked.
Anyone know what extra steps need to be taken to get the voicemail working?

This was part of a Black Friday deal, therefore it has nothing to do with the pricing in other countries. Amazon even had a 50" TV for $149 and there were many other deals...

Any way to get rid of Verizon activation that pops up every reboot?
This is for certain type of Best Buy customers.. requires some type of special account i heard.
I'm trying to bypass now. Wish me luck (getting on a regular Verizon account)
I managed to buy a couple of these for the Family plan on T-Mobile. I should receive them in a few days, so I'm doing my research now I've read the thread on switching the phone to GSM. Here's the plan so far. Any feedback is welcome:
- Put in Tmo sim and microSD
- Switch to GSM
- Subscribe to TMo Family plan (over internet or call in?)
- After activation, turn off update to 5.1 (do I need band 12 in southern CA? If not, any problems with updating to 5.1 ota?)
- Remove Verizon apps
Did I miss anything?

I recently switched two of these over to T-Mobile's family plan, and it isn't as easy as you might expect, although still very manageable.

This thread was incredibly useful, the green instructions are what you'll likely need to follow. Make sure you have adb on your computer beforehand. Once you finish with that process, you will need to enter in your T-Mobile APN.
Name: T-Mobile
APN: fast.t-mobile.com
Proxy: <Leave in Blank>
Port: <Leave in Blank>
Username: <Leave in Blank>
Password: <Leave in Blank>
Server: <Leave in Blank>
MMSC: mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMS proxy: <Leave in Blank>
MMS port: <Leave in Blank>
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
Authentication type: <Leave in Blank>
APN type: default,supl,mms
APN Protocol: IPv6 (Not sure if you need to change this, but I did)
APN roaming Protocol: IPv4
Bearer: Unspecified
MVNO type: None
MVNO value: Not set
After this, I ran into an issue with the network connection flickering. I'd have 4G LTE for a second, then no signal, back and forth. To solve this, I followed these instructions:
thisisthedroid said:
I'll elaborate and include what to do to get it to work with T-mobile mvno:
Download the Network app from the store.
Tap the square button on the bottom right of the phone to bring up all recent apps, and clear away everything.
Go to settings -> more -> cellular networks. Notice "Preferred network type" is on lte/cdma. Leave this screen alone.
Tap the circle button at the bottom of the phone to get to the home page.
Open the Network app.
Near the bottom you can "Set preferred network type." It'll be set on lte/cdma.
Below that, there's "turn off radio".
Turn off the radio, and then change the preferred network type to lte/gsm.
Tap the square button to bring up the recent apps, and tap the "cellular networks" screen that you were on earlier.
See if "Preferred network type" has changed to "global". If it has, then the following steps will work. If it hasn't, then skip to the bottom.
Tap the square button and go back to the Network app. Turn on the radio.
Quickly tap the square button and go back to the cellular networks screen.
When "4G LTE" shows up in the notification area, quickly tap "global" and you'll have the choice of 4G, 3G, 2G. Hurry and tap 4G before "4G LTE" disappears.
Now you've got 4GLte, and you'll just need to add an apn as well as select your network operator.
4G still works for me after a reboot. I'm on Consumer Cellular (T-mobile mvno), if it matters. I'm sending/receiving texts and calls, and data works.
If it doesn't say "global", then go back to the Network app, pick some other preferred network type, like lte/gsm/cdma, and try this again.
To get "global," you'll need some combination of turning the radio on and off, and picking lte/gsm or lte/gsm/cdma.
Maybe turn off the radio, pick lte/gsm, turn on the radio, THEN "global" shows up. I don't remember exactly.
Maybe pick a random preferred network, turn the radio on and off, and then go back and pick lte/gsm and look for "global".
But I do remember doing this process randomly dozens of times and whenever "cellular networks" said "lte/cdma" there never was a choice of 4g, 3g, 2g.
However, three times I managed to get "global" to show up, and each time I tapped on it the popup gave me the three "G" choices.
The third time I got "global" to show up, I managed to tap 4G fast enough, and it's been smooth sailing ever since.
One minor annoyance now though: whenever I restart the phone, I get a notification that the sim is not a Verizon one.
Thanks, lostnyc! Good luck everybody!

This took a little while to work, but ended up fixing the issue. You might have to fiddle with networks a good deal, but it will eventually work.
Or maybe you can bypass most of the challenge I had here and get lucky. Let me know if you need any help, I'd love give any assistance I can.
Thanks for the quick reply Mouse_exe. Did you upgrade to 5.1? Any issues with the upgrade, specifically related to using band 12?

I believe the device comes with 5.1 already, at least both of mine did.
The main issues were just connection based, but those were fixed with the method I mentioned. The one device didn't update the play store, so it was crashing. I just downloaded an updated version from a Google search to fix that.
The device has bands 2 and 4, no band 12. Works well overall, but you're not going to be getting the reception of band 12. :/ Still though, great phone for 10 bucks.
EDIT: Bands 2 and 4 are very common, you shouldn't need band 12 in the phone to get signal.
You don't need any special account, just buy it instore or online on blackfriday.
Bought 3, using on on T-Mobile and it works fine. Also managed to swap in a post-paid Verizon SIM into one of them and it works fine.
NOTE: REMOVE VERIZON PREPAID SIM BEFORE YOU EVEN POWER IT ON

Verizon Galaxy S5 Moved/ported over to Straight Talk - NO DATA CONNECTION **SOLVED**

So, I will start by giving information that is hopefully relevant.
I moved from Verizon to Straight Talk w/ a Straight Talk SIM card for Verizon towers. My phone is rooted, and bootloader unlocked (15 emmc).
I am currently using a custom ROM CM13 (Official Build Nightlies current ROM is from 4-27-2016)
I started Straight talk about 1 week ago, and ported my number over to ST with a sim card I bought from Amazon for Verizon Towers.
When a person starts ST they give you a free 5 day trial, then you start your monthly payments. Everything was fine during the 5 day trial, I HAD data and it was connecting at 4G/LTE speeds (Mobile Network Icon displayed "Verizon"). Then, when the trial ended and my refill card kicked in, I lost all data connection. Absolutely NO internet. In fact, the mobile network icon in the status bar (pull down menu) displayed "No Service," I then called ST customer service, they were able to get me connected but only at 3G speeds (However the mobile network Icon still displayed "No Service." I have coverage in this area I live in for 4G/LTE as I used it in this area for 2 years when I was with Verizon. The CS rep (who was a supervisor) then tried to get me connected at 4G. Long story short, they could not get me connected, in fact I lost data again. (I should mention that at this time I can still place and recieve calls as well as send and receive text messages.) The CS rep then contacted Verizon and now they are sending me a new SIM card. My question is, What is the difference between the CM13 Unofficial VS Official Build? Could this be affecting my DATA connection? The unofficial builds can be found in the Galaxy S5 Verizon Development Threads. Can't remember where I found the official builds, but is the official Cyanogenmod site. I do have the link, but I don't have enough posts to show. Could I possibly be using the wrong ROM? Or is it something on Straight Talks side? Or have I missed something? Could this problem be a symptom of using the DEV Bootloader unlock method for Samsung 15 emmc? I would appreciate some insight on this. I should be receiving my new SIM hopefully in a few days or by the beginning of next week so I can update more when that comes. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Response is very much appreciated, unfortunately for some reason these APN settings do not work, ("No Service" is displayed with no signal bars under the mobile network icon in the pull down menu from the status bar) I have tried other various APN settings from random forums, and youtube. None have worked. Maybe my SIM card is corrupted possibly? I guess I will have to wait and see when Str8 Talk sends me my new SIM card. Will update/post new info when I know more. Thanks.
funny you should say that, today I don't have data or a signal at all (at work). I'll report back if that changes at home later today. It could be a sim issue or just a straight talk issue.

funny you should say that, today I don't have data or a signal at all (at work). I'll report back if that changes at home later today. It could be a sim issue or just a straight talk issue.

Interesting, glad to know I'm not the only one in this situation. Thanks. I will be sure to update this post as well when I know more. Thanks.
so the way I finally fixed it was to reload CM13 and use the last APN to edit with my settings and not delete the others. Don't know why it mattered but I'm up and running

Yeah, tried editing the last APN as you suggested, still nothing. However I can connect to the tower (still with "No Service" indication) to receive phone calls and mms. But still no data. My new SIM card arrives in the mail 2 moro. Hopefully that is the issue.
If you're unable to edit the APN settings, I'd think that it was a faulty SIM card. Keep us notified, I'd be glad to help if possible.

Well, I am able to edit my APN settings, just the settings I have tried from XDA and other random forums/youtube/etc. just have not been working. As I have mentioned I am receiving my new SIM from Str8Talk 2moro, so hopefully a faulty SIM is the issue. Thanks for all the responses everyone, and I will keep everyone updated.
This is what worked for me. I am running daily CM13and been very happy. I edited the last APN entry and it saved fine.
Name: Verizon Internet (name whatever you want)
APN: TRACFONE.VZWENTP
MCC: 311
MNC: 480
APN Type: default,dun,supl
APN Protocol: IPv4/IPv6
APN Roaming Protocol IPv4/IPv6
Bearer: Unspecified
The rest is empty or default
MMSC on mine says "not set"
SOLVED
Well received my new SIM card. Apparently the old SIM wasn't letting me connect to the towers. Old SIM card displayed "No Service" under the Mobile Network icon. I called CS they activated my new SIM. New SIM card displayed "Verizon Wireless." However I still wasn't able to get data. They then escalated the ticket. After I hung up the phone I tried these APN settings:

These worked, not sure if the previously mentioned APN settings would of worked as I did not try them with my new SIM card. It could very well be that those APN settings would of worked too. So, long story short I'm thinking the original SIM I used became corrupted somehow. Not sure how that could of happened but everything is functioning properly. I then called ST CS and had them close my ticket before they made any more changes to my account from their side. Thanks to all who replied to this thread.
Thought I would provide another update... For some reason the APN settings for TRACFONE.VZWENTP stopped working today. Called straight talk and got data working again using the VZWINTERNET apn setting. So weird. Not sure why I'm updating this thread but I thought it was important? LOL probably not, because straight talk seems to be a Sh** storm. LOL IM GOING CRAZY!!! Weeeeeeeeeeeee
APN not working for me
Hello, I had straight talk last year on my unrooted verizon samsung galaxy s5 and had no problems with the apn settings. I rooted my phone about 2 months ago using this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/root-method-og5-ok3-t3290370. Today I decided to reactivate my straight talk service and I have tried multiple apns and none of them seem to work. Also the apn on this forum wouldn't even save on my phone. Any idea on what i should do? Maybe I need a new sim card?

Update, i finally got my data working. I had to use a new sim card as well. I am currently using the verizon CDMA sim card that came in the byop pack. Been having some issues receiving text and mms messages tho and the apn used is what is on this forum since it is compatible with the sim without making any changes.
Have GS4 using on Straight Talk VZW towers but have been unable to get 4G working 3G is doing ok. Was changing apn settings to this post and also noticed that i am unable to input manually the APN type....options being (Internet+MMS) (Internet) and (MMS)
may be a bad sim as well but just wanted to chime in and see if anyone had run into similar issues.
Thanks in advance!!

I would just try to talk to Straight Talk about it, it could be the sim card, or it could be the phone number you currently have. I just reactivated my service hoping no one else had my number but they did which had ended that person's service, which was why i was having a difficult time receiving text and mms. Now that i have a new number and used a new sim card everything works fine. I also can't manually change the Verizon apn but so far i have no need to change it.
Same issues but I have a Galaxy Sky Pro. Straight talk and verizon towers. Tried changing APN, NO luck. It will only let me change my APN, NOTHING ELSE????? It is a straight talk phone???? HELP!

Verizon Moto G4 Play XT1609 - Total Wireless APN Settings

Hello folks,
Data wasn't working for Total Wireless on my Verizon Moto G4 Play XT1609. APN settings are missing on the phone, so you'll need the app below to add the proper APN settings on your phone. After a couple days of searching on the net, I couldn't find anything that worked, so here's what I did that finally worked for me.
Download Change APN from the Google Play Store.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.appando.app.changeApn&hl=en

Open Change APN app and tap the + sign to add your APN settings for Total Wireless.
Fix your MMS picture messaging and data internet problems with the APN settings listed below.

How did you make this work when the 1609 doesn't accept EDGE or HSPAP?

I didn't do anything...
1. I unlocked the phone (on ebay)
2. I used a sim from a TW phone
3. I used Change APN app to add apn settings
4. Restarted the phone and all was good.

I'm aware, but EDGE and HSPAP are strictly GSM. What I'm asking is how those settings even worked, especially when so many units are suffering from the APN crash inherent to all ROMs right now.

I'm specifically speaking about the Verizon Moto G4 Play XT1609 version phone. I ported my sister over from H2O to Total Wireless. I used a TW sim to activate to a TW 4G phone. I then took that sim and popped it into the Moto G4 Play. My sister reported that data wasn't working, so I installed Change APN app from Google Play store..
I added the TW apn settings from above into the Change APN app, saved it, restarted the phone and all was good. Obviously you're not going to have data & voice work simultaneously, but you can use Hangouts Dialer to get around that if needed. I hope that clears up any confusion.

He's using the Verizon Prepaid Moto G4 Play, it is a CDMA /LTE device. No EDGE or HSPA. I hope this clarifies his use of a Verizon G4 Play on a VZW mvno.

No, it does not. Look at the original post. The OP put GSM settings in an APN for a CDMA device. Please stop patronizing me and explain how in the hell that works, when we have not one, but FOUR threads where people cannot get Verizon APNs to work.

So you would recomend buying the unlock code before doing any of this? Also, did you have the G4 Play activated on Verizon Prepaid before you did all this?

I'm not understanding what you're trying to say. The apn settings are for Total Wireless, a Verizon MVNO. I'm not or was not suggesting the phone would work for GSM networks. The Change APN app only allows you to edit/add apn settings, and those are the apn settings I found and used for Total Wireless.

Yes, unlock the phone first. I did not activate the phone at all with Verizon, but I did use an active TW sim card. Be sure not to turn the phone on with the Verizon Prepaid sim before getting the phone unlocked.

Too late, already activated. Do you think there may be problems trying to get the phone to work with TW? I ran the IMEI number through their website and it said the phone is compatible.

No, you shouldn't have any trouble with activating it on TW, but you still might need to unlock it, which only costs $2 or less on eBay. Good luck!

There are multiple problems with what you are saying. First, Total Wireless is a subsidiary of America Movil, same as Tracfone, StraightTalk, Net10, TelCel and Family Mobile. Considering I just had to fight with Tracfone to get a VZW APN (on a different phone) to work yesterday, the APN name was VZWINTERNET but it lacked some of the text strings you supplied, and could not be edited by the user. It also seemed to vanish after the phone was programmed properly.
The "Bearer" line shouldn't look like that. Most carriers and MVNOs leave it as "Not Set" or unspecified. So this is junk data the phone will discard at best or be confused by at worst. My concern was that those settings would be rejected by Verizon and you wouldn't be able to obtain an IP address, since similar things can and have happened on the AT&T side (which is what my primary uses).
And once again, this doesn't exactly fix things for those using the 1607 model. People have tried your trick extensively, but the ROMs currently being used are Dual SIM and don't recognize CDMA technology as being valid. As such, they either get Voice/NoData, or Data/NoVoice. They're not reading MEIDs or IMEIs correctly, favoring one over the other, and that's what we believe to be part of the problem. So forgive me for being cynical about this.

So is there a difference between the 1607 and 1609 models? The one I have is the 1609 Verizon prepaid bought at Walmart.

I'm just telling you what I did for my sister's Verizon Prepaid Moto G4 Play XT1609 phone on Total Wireless. Anyone with the same exact model phone should be able to replicate what I did. Maybe this will not work on other models, but it worked for me using the Change APN app using those EXACT apn settings. I don't see why you would be so cynical about this, and I only posted this to help others out that may have the same issue I had, nothing more, nothing less buddy.
Here's where I found the TW apn settings that worked for me. https://www.reddit.com/r/NoContract/comments/4pkhoh/total_wireless_4g_apn_settings/

1607 has both a GSM/LTE and a CDMA/LTE antenna. 1609 only has a CDMA/LTE antenna and its LTE bands are locked to a smaller range.

So if TW is an MVNO of Verizon, shouldn't this phone work with their service by just changing the APN settings, as Phenom727 suggests?
