Hello,
I'm a relatively new Nexus user. I've only been around for one update until September's OTA rolled out to me today. Last month, I used FlashFire to flash system, vendor, and boot, and that went great. Since radio and bootloader weren't updated, it was relatively straightforward. However, in the Nougat 7.0 firmware zip posted on Google's download page, radio and bootloader are also updated. I would prefer to keep stock since it runs well and I have Verizon and use HD calling. My questions are:
1) Are bootloader/radio safely flashable using FlashFire also, or must you use fastboot?
2) What are the recommended steps to flash Nougat on the stock ROM and retain root and data?
I always use flashfire. Even on the latest OTA with security updates. It warns that it might fail, but as long as /system is unmodified then you can flash it no problem. I also use the built in everroot function and the auto recovery restore function for TWRP. Super seemless.
I'm pretty sure I am not using systemless root. If that's the case, /system is modified right? I'm not sure how I can tell to be honest.
I am definitely not using Xposed.
You can Flash bootloader/radio image with twrp aswell.

That's dangerous territory. Flashing bootloader and radio should only be done via fastboot. Safest way to do it and it takes about 30 seconds.

Ordered my Nexus 4 a few days ago and it should be arriving tomorrow. My only question is, if I unlock the bootloader, root it, and install a recovery, etc. but I do not flash a custom ROM, leaving the phone just on stock 4.2.2,
Will I will still be able to check for OTA updates/install them?

Yes, if you have root but still on the stock rom, kernel and recovery you can download and install the OTA but you will have to reroot again afterwards.

Yes, but for if the OP only has root and for the rest everything stock.
Better to not take otas anyways. Everytime you take a ota you risk having your phone locked by some patch they slide in via ota. Meaning you cant use the previous methods to reroot or unlock. Since your going through all the trouble of rooting. Just wait the 30mins it takes someone to make a recovery flash out of it. Its why you have a custom recovery on there in the first place. Plus its much less work lol

This is a NEXUS we don't need a exploit to gain root just unlock and push or flash SU. All nexus use the same method to root. No ota will change that

Its 4.05 bootloader still. Somehow in the zip its called bootloader-flo-flo-04.05.img
There's a new kernel, some changes in the source. Its compiled March 21
Not much else changed
Has any one got the ota yet ?
@Vkk187
ofc not.
Flash the stock image with NRT and check "dirty flash" and that will not delete your apps and data.
Yet to unlock my BL ...I know it's simple . Will do it some day [emoji18]
AonI updated to 5.1 rooted stock via TWRP a couple weeks ago.
Today I just got this update notification for 5.1
Is today's notification for 5.1.1? Because it only says 5.1

I just completely flash-all every time a new build comes out as I do not know how to side load using NRT or TWRP (am I wasting my time on doing it this way). If someone could please explain to me how to side load I would be forever grateful. I have searched and cannot find clear instructions or walk through on side loading
Having read wugfresh page,it says Since lollipop, its hard to sideload OTA now. I myself try it last night with my rooted stock recovery,it fails to install the OTA from google, even if file has been downloaded automatically. Its harder to get OTA install smoothly nowadays especially if you on lollipop. No choice had full flash without wipe. And reroot again.

Actually, it's just as easy sideloading as it's always been. The difference is that you can't sideload an OTA (or receive one in any way) if you've done any kind of alterations to the system. This includes rooting and/or flashing custom recoveries and kernels. Even if you unroot there are still residue alterations in your system, meaning you'll have to do a full system flash anyway.
It's worth mentioning that unlocking your bootloader does not prevent installing an OTA.
How is this version running compare to the 5.0?

Any versions of Android on the Nexus 7 2013 ran fine for me.
So, I'm rooted, but haven't installed any custom roms yet since they all seem to have lots of bugs.
Basically, once M drops, I won't be able to install an OTA update, right? So how will I be able to just run rooted stock, like I am now?
Realize I should probably just cross that bridge when I get to it, but thanks in advance

You will get the OTA but it will not get installed on your phone as you have modified system. I was also on Stock Rooted but i had the Nandroid backup of my unmodified system i.e. the backup before i flashed the SuperSU zip. If you also have the backup of you system that you can restore it and flash the stock recovery , then you will be good to go for MM update.
Hmmm... What if I didn't save the backup of my stock unrooted?

There will be a stock rooted rom posted once OTA is released, you flash it just like any other rom. You might need to flash updated firmware as well.

You can use the restore to stock tool.
If you have flashed TWRP just restore stock recovery and ota should work then. The reason it would fail other wise is because it is detecting the non-stock recovery. Having an unlocked bootloader shouldn't matter though don't take my word on that.

OP says that he has rooted his stock ROM. So i guess he has to restore whole system.
are you sure its not going to take the OTA, in my past experience which dates way back ( been a nexus warrior for years now) you can apply the update as long as you haven't modified anything with the stock apps, so if you removed any of the google office like apps then it would fail. but if you just rooted and just did stuff like greenify or titanium backup it would work

No, you won't be able to install an OTA update, because you're rooted (and have a custom recovery, like TWRP).
When Marshmallow becomes available, you'll either flash an update like any other ROM. Or, you can restore your phone to stock condition (using Restore to Stock tool), and then get an OTA update from there.
In either case, always assume worst-case scenario where you'll lose all your data; and will need to reload applications + data after the update, however you choose to get it done.
Seems like it would be easiest to just flash a zip file. Will there be an official one?

Sure there will be one sooner than later. Just probably not same day as it might come out. Just takes devs a couple days and I can bet they will have a stock rooted rom to flash. I am in same boat. I don't want to take the jump to the early indian build. Just seems to buggy atm. Just have to have patience. Devs work wonders and for that I thank them.
Full unroot with supersu will it work?
On my 2013 X I was able to take the OTA. There are two main concerns:
Xposed will need to be removed if it is installed. There used to be a zip you could flash, but here are manual instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=58964632&postcount=2262
TWRP will need to be replaced with the stock recovery, else the update will put you into a boot loop.
I did not have to remove the SuperSU binaries or re-flash system, but if you have the time it is the safest option.
OK, so now its real... What have you all been doing?

Been busy, still have not unlocked/rooted my 6P.
I've got the OTA for N 7.0 waiting to install - is there anything that will screw me up from fastboot flashing back to a previous image if I take the OTA to 7.0 and then do the fastboot flashing unlock and unlock the phone while on 7.0.
I'm guessing it should be like all Nexus devices still where you can always go back, but I have noticed some people having issues when trying to downgrade. If it trips anything up I'll wait, but if I can take the OTA and then unlock, rooting, downgrade, upgrade, ROM, etc as usual, I'll give N a go first.

You should be able to do everything you said in your post. I've done the same things multiple times with no problems whatsoever. That's the beauty of a Nexus device.
10-4. Previous Nexus experience with the n7 2013 was that way, just had seen some people having brick issues while trying to downgrade

That was due to TWRP 3.0.2-1 having a bug restoring EFS partitions. If you are fastboot flashing a factory MM image, you should be fine.

Since you're stock, locked and unrooted... YMMV
On multiple forums, it was suggested that right vendor.img should work for downgrade
I installed Android 7 Nougat by flashing WETA 8 ROM on unlocked bootloader
To revert to Marshmallow, I was able flash the vendor.img along with radio.img and bootloader.img and then MM ROM from https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=88221

in my past experience with fastboot flashes, I never messed with any vendor.img. Is this a new thing?
My thought was to hop to 7.0, give it a run, and if necessary I would factory reset and fastboot flash myself back to 6.0.1. All stock, then go from there.

I too learnt about the vendor.img recently
The dev for WETA ROM included this in change log : "WETA V5.0 *reflashing vendor.img is essential for this update"
Since you are on stock ROM, would this for you?

Vendor has been a thing all through MM, too. It includes binaries that allow Android to run and is updated with each new build. So, every ROM or monthly security update requires a matching vendor to work.

Yes, vendor is in each build of factory image. Many on here can't be bothered flashing from bootloader so they wait for someone to make a zip. If you have a mismatched vendor, you will get an error message on boot and your phone will likely exhibit anything from FCs of apps to bootloops to whatever.

So I will have to reinstall TWRP if I want to install the OTA update.
Not rooted mine but in my experiences in many many other devices you must be on stock with no mods to system or boot to take an OTA...Again I'm not sure if ZTE has mad exception but I doubt it..So you must probably restore to the image stock. Then check for updates. Or possibly flash the update via custom ROM built off of it...
