So far it looks like the Tmobile S4 has LTE/HSPA+ support for AT&T, and no real signs of a locked bootloader. Anyone else plan on buying that version and unlocking it if the bootloader is in fact unlocked?
Does anyone know of any apps that would test the LTE/HSPA+ bands the phone is capable of? I want to go into a Tmobile and use a test unit to see if I can get service with my LTE AT&T SIM.
https://explore.t-mobile.com/samsung-galaxy-s4
Edit: Well, it looks like I'll be getting the Tmobile variant unsubsidized and use it on AT&T. Tmobile will unlock the phone if you pay the total cost up front. I just need to find a replacement back cover to rid myself of the stupid Tmobile logo on the back... lol.

If I had the money to buy the S4 outright for full price, I would just get an i9505.
EDIT: Spoke too soon. The i9505 doesn't support AT&T's LTE bands.
Can you post info on the source? I was also curious about this but i was thinking if we changed the radios like they did in the past that maybe we could get something working?

I put the info in the OP that I have so far; the LTE/3G radios are reported to support all of AT&T's bands. The bootloader, I'm going off of a guess since I don't think that Tmobile could afford to bribe Samsung to lock their bootloaders for them.
HMM, ok thanks for the info so far. I might have to go out and pick one up and test it.
Looks like the T-Mobile version has all the same bands and some extra ones added in. For instance the at&t only has lte bands 4&17. The tmobile version has LTE bands 1,2,4,5,7&17. Will T-Mobile unlock their phones for u??

I'm feeling like a newbie today cause I have my new T-Mobile Galaxy S4 in front of me & still playing with new features after 3 hours.
Tell me how to check to see if bootloader is unlocked and I'll do it.
Also trying to remember where we go to unlock the developer tools. Only remember that it must be clicked 7 times?
Just remembered, Settings.About Device>Build Number <Click Build Number 7 times, back out and Developer options magically appears.
Now i can go into it and toggle USB debugging. Now I only feel 95% newbie.

So .. How do I get TMoble 4G on my HTC One X
What do I have to do get off Edge and onto Tmobile 3g/4g. I have the unlocked HTC One X ... What apps are there, and what steps needs to be followed.

Has anybody tried their T-Mobile phone on AT&T yet?
If so, I have a couple of questions.
1. Can you use the T-Mobile phone to wireless tether (become a wifi hotspot) on AT&T's network? The AT&T version can be used to tether (with a simple hack). I was just wondering if a different .APK would be needed to do the same with the T-Mobile phone on AT&T's network or if the T-Mobile phone already has an APK installed that works on AT&T's network?
2. I realize an existing AT&T sim card can just simply be placed into the sim unlocked T-Mobile phone for it to work, but how would I go about changing the imei and other phone info that AT&T has in their system about the phone? In other words, would AT&T cause problems with anyone using a T-Mobile phone on their network even if the person paid full price for the phone and it is unlocked? Would it be better to have them change the system information at a store versus over the telephone?
3. It is reported that the T-Mobile phone works fine on AT&T's LTE network, has anyone verified this and does the phone show LTE when on AT&T's LTE network?
Thank you for any replies. Hopefully this information can help people decide if they want to buy the T-Mobile S4 to use on AT&T or not.

You can, for now, use PDAnet for tethering.
As far as changing the phone to appear as "unknown" to AT&T's system, don't do it without a backup of your /efs folder. I don't recommend doing it either because it's not really worth changing things around to hide that you're on a Tmobile phone, because for the most part, they don't care as long as you're paying them your monthly bill. I personally know a friend who has used her unlocked HTC Amaze on AT&T without issue (she was stuck to 2G speeds). The only way for you to have an "unknown" phone on your account is to use an international model phone such as the HTC one or the i9500 (unconfirmed that the i9300/i9500 model is entered into AT&T's system, I only hèard a rumour that AT&T has the IMEI of those phones in its system). My i9100 currently shows up as "unknown" in my bill statement.
I took a screenshot, but I don't have a link of the LTE working conformation (attached). I won't be getting my phone until I am on holiday in New Hampshire so that I can avoid the sales tax on purchasing the Tmobile variant. I would ask my parents to buy it for me, and I send them the money, but they have no technological skills whatsoëver close to asking/knowing what to ask for at the Tmobile store. Sorry guys, lol.
my t mobile m919 stock mdl rooted..tetheting works out of the box SN at&t and on their system it doesn't know what kind of phone I have...

The verizon s3 had gsm capabilities after some tinkering (I think it involved flashing a different rom), so I was hoping the same might eventually be possible with the us cellular s4. Does anybody know if the us cellular is purely cdma and not possibly a world phone with hidden gsm capabilities?
I have seen a few galaxy S4 listed as I9500 from US Cellular. I asked the sellers about it and they say they don't know. But I9500 is a GSM model and US Cellular is a CDMA carrier.
US Cellular will not work on other carrier
According to this reliable source s4 US Cellular is strictly CDMA, not like Verizon counter part.

I know, this is an old thread but I like the old phones.
I can confirm that a US Cellular Samsung S4 Model SCH-R970 can make calls and do SMS on a GSM carrier (Verizon) in my case. My problem is 4G data isn't working, yet. Edit: I am able to get 3G data going, but 4G is not.
I recently picked up a cheap but perfectly good US Cellular S4 and was able to use my Verizon SIM to make calls and SMS. It appears that the phone is only set to CDMA so data with Verizon isn't active at this moment (I am using wifi). The trick to getting the voice and text working was letting the phone go through 5-6 system updates over the course of 5-6 hours yesterday over wi-fi. After the last one, the phone "unlocked" from US Cellular** and let me use my Verizon sim to make calls and send text.
**This falls in line with what it says here uscellular dot com:
"4G LTE Devices
All 4G LTE devices launched by U.S. Cellular on or after February 1, 2016 are sold unlocked. Select 4G LTE devices (listed below) that were launched before February 1, 2016 are unlocked by installing the latest software update. Please refer to the Software Updates page to find the latest software version available for these devices and for instructions on how to download the latest software update."

I always liked my S4 so when my S5 broke (dead screen) I picked up an S4 cheap. I can't stomach paying $200-800 for a new or ussed S5-S8 phone.
Does anyone know how to add the GSM settings into the phone so I can select that as my data network?? Currently the phone only displays CDMA/LTE as the choices.

Ah, OK then I stand corrected. Perhaps I am running a fool's errand here (trying to get GSM going).
Let me update the situation: my current status is that 3G data is working on the SCH-R970 US Cellular phone (with a Verizon sim) but 4G never kicks in. Maybe I just need to visit a Verizon store.

Yep, thanks. I attempted to do that. But I don't believe I the setting took hold.
Details: I used "Offline SIM APN" tool (from Play Store), and manually entered the settings that I found online for Verizon. The Os is now 5.0.1 and the tool says it can no longer add the APN automatically on Android v4.0 or higher, so I did it manually. It appears to be in the phone but I don't know how to activate it on the phone.

I managed to add APN in an old phone a few years ago by editing the build.pro file, but you need to be rooted in order to do that.
I don't know much about the carrier frequencies but am curious to know if the LG G2 (model: LG-D801) support LTE on the Telus Mobility network if I ROOT the device and install a custom ROM?
Can someone point me to a good how-to guide on ROOTING the LG G2? Does this device have a recovery program like TWRP? I've found some links but just do not wish to damage my phone. Unlike the Note 3, are there issues with hard bricking the device should I accidentally install the wrong ROM?
Thanks!
The LG-D801 is a pentaband phone.
All you need to do is unlock the device, you can get the code online for approximately 8 USD.
After you use that code, put in your Telus SIM and you may need to input the APN settings and you should be set. If you dont know the APN settings, go on Google and search for "Telus LTE APN settings" you should find it.

Thanks! That's great to know as I thought I would need to root the device to enable the LTE modem. I know with Samsung devices you would need to root for access to the LTE modem which has been crippled on WIND devices. You can just flash the modem but whenever an OTA update occurs, you lose the flash.
Thanks again! I'll unlock my device and if required, enter the Telus APN settings and I'll be all up and running. Have a good night!

Although the wind mobile d801 is the same model as t-mobile, doesnt seem like the t-mobile root works on this so im going to guess this is slightly different
@Vortex1212 - You said you had the WIND Mobile version? This would be model: LG-D801 and I can confirm once I have unlocked this, I get a MAX speed of 4G. If I go into my Network Mode settings, the only option is GSM/WCDMA (auto connect) so the other option for the modem: LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect) is definitely crippled. I have modified the APN settings to reflect the correct settings for Telus LTE. On your device, if you go into your "About Phone" menu, what is your model number? I'm thinking maybe the WIND Mobile store received a TMOBILE variant which would explain the lack of LTE.
@droid_<3er - I bought from WIND Mobile but both WIND and T-MOBILE use the same frequencies so if unlocked, their devices will work interchangeably. As for the difference in models, I'm unsure as I just purchased this device this morning.

Yeah I have the wind mobile version from what I remember. And it has to be wind mobile or I wouldnt have been able to unlock my phone using the wind key. the phone has chosen LTE/WCDMA/GSM for me, but just did a speed test and got only 13Mbps, so I guess its not LTE.

Well... To determine if you have true LTE, the modem would need to be enabled. It's still possible our carriers being non-wind may be throttling our speeds but if you go into the following menu: Settings | Network (upper left tab at top of screen) | Tethering & networks | Mobile Networks then Network mode, how many modems do you see? If 3, it's most likely GSM/WCDMA (auto-connect), WCDMA (only) and GSM (only). This means the fastest speed the device will produce is 4G (step below LTE). If you have a 4th modem: LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto-connect), your LTE modem is enabled but very possible is being throttled.
Please let me know as I'm curious on this. Thank you!

I see your point. On my G2 the GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto mode is available and I have it selected, but I do notice that I rarely get 5 bars in the notifications. So although it is connected I think it might be throttled.

This is strange how we both have the same model yet your device has the GSM/WCDMA/LTE modem reflected in your settings. Do you have 3 or 4 modems listed? I only have 3 with the top being: GSM/WCDMA. Thanks!
Also, if you go into your "About Phone" menu, what is your model number. Curious if you maybe have the LG-D802 which has LTE uncrippled. Guess it depends on the batch of devices the WIND store received. Thanks again!

Thank you for the response. Very odd! Perhaps it has to do with the method of unlocking?
How did each of you unlock it?
I'm thinking of unlocking my phone which I bought from Wind Mobile. Since both of you have the same model and both unlocked from the same service, I think maybe the method of unlocking might have different results.
If it's not the unlocking method, I guess there are variants even within the same models!
Also, cellrama, please let me know if you did get LTE onto your phone!

I'm leaning more towards different variants. As I understand, the D801 (WIND variant) and D803 (Telus/Bell/Rogers variant) have the same specs. I have all the required programs to flash the Telus ROM onto the WIND variant but just doing a bit more research to ensure I do no brick the device. I'll keep you posted as to my results. Thanks!

Thank you for the response. Very odd! When I purchased my Note 3, I had the same issue where another WIND user had LTE out of the box after unlocking whereas myself, I had to root, and update the software with the Telus model of SM-N900W8 software. Strange but onto the next venture of trying to figure out how to ROOT, Install RECOVERY and FLASH to puppy so it works to it's full capacity on Telus.
Have a good one!

Yeah do let me know if you find a way to ROOT this device. I have been researching all day but have not come across anything, but then again all I have been searching for is LG G2 wind mobile root.
As for the reason why I have LTE option enabled, it may just vary from device to device, or I may have gotten lucky and got one of the few they forgot to disable the LTE feature.
Just purchased the unlocked version of the S8. I'm able to get an LTE connection just fine, but I've yet to establish a 3G connection in places that I can on the Verizon version of the S8. Has anyone on Verizon, been able to get a 3G connection on the unlocked version? To be clear, SM-G950U1 is the unlocked Snapdragon US variant, that just started shipping on 5/27, not the unlocked international exynos variant.

Make sure network is LTE/CDMA in mobile settings instead of Global.
Are you able to get VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling?

I forgot to mention that I'd already tried LTE/CDMA.
Yes on VoLTE, no on Wi-Fi calling. See screenshot.
Where did you purchase this? Best Buy by any chance?
Also, have you tried calling into Verizon to see if they can activate anything on their end? The phone should support their CDMA.

Is there an advanced calling menu in the settings?
What happens when you go into a VZW LTE dead zone? Does it drop to 1x.
I actually try to set my phone to LTE only to conserve battery.
My 2 cents

No, there is not. In fact, the locations of settings within the settings menus are laid out completely different. There is an advanced menu, and within that menu, the only thing phone related is an option to "identify spam," which is a replacement for Verizon's Caller ID service, only it's native to the S8 and doesn't cost anything. It appears that it's the "hiya" app, baked into the phone.
I have not had an opportunity to visit an LTE dead zone. However, in the past, when I have exited my parking garage or elevator (where I've dropped coverage) my phone's typically show a 3G connection first, and then moments later they will then show a 4G connection. With this phone, it takes longer to connect, and when it does, it connects to 4G, bypassing the 3G part of the process I described. That's what brought me here.
That said, I think I've answered my question:
According to Samsung's website the US variant of the unlocked S8 supports these bands/frequencies:
Network
Frequencies and Data Type
B1(2100), B2(1900), B3(1800), B4(AWS), B5(850), B7(2600), B8(900), B12(700), B13(700), B17(700), B18(800), B19(800), B20(800), B25(1900), B26(800), B28(700), B29(700), B30(2300), B66(AWS-3)
According to Wikipedia, Verizon operates it's 2G/3G network over B0(850) and B1(1900). Of all the bands Samsung listed, I believe the Verizon ones are all LTE.
So, I guess the answer is that the unlocked S8 does not support Verizon's 2G/3G network, and I better hope that I don't end up in an area where Verizon only offers 3G. HTC's new U11 is the same way.

Direct from Samsung. I haven't, but my understanding is that you're on your own when it comes to unlocked devices. I don't think it does support CDMA, now that I've researched it more. See prior post explaining why.

I've seen your explanation, and it's very logical. The only problem is it directly contradicts what the back of a 955U1 box says - "Wireless voice, data, and messaging services compatible with most major U.S. GSM and CDMA networks." It also contradicts how Samsung did the S7/S7 Edge, being compatible with all four networks in the U.S.
Again, I'm not saying your wrong, but given that the G955U is the model used on all U.S. carriers and has full band compatibility, it just doesn't make sense that Samsung would do this. And yes, I know, Samsung doesn't have to make sense...

The band types you listed are only for LTE. Band numbers for GSM, And CDMA are different.
Try the dialer codes to see what RF bands are enabled. Dial *#2263# in the phone dialer to get the menu. Dialing *#0011# will give you current status of Cell radio.
I'm certain the phone has the required radios and antenna to support all Carrier network cell types but whether it's enabled is another story.

I didn't even see that text on the box until you pointed it out. That definitely implies that it should work, unless the CDMA support is limited to Sprint.

Do those dialer codes work for you? I can't get them to work on neither the Verizon SM-G950U nor the unlocked U1 that I have.
And yes, that's what my advanced calling menu on my Verizon S8 looks like as well. The unlocked version doesn't have that. Only an option to turn on VoLTE. No Video nor WiFi calling. Also, there's no visual voicemail, which sucks.
The codes do not work for me on my VZW phone., but works on my TMO phone.
I'm wondering if it's SIM dependent.

I was able to test another unlocked version today, and it had no problems connecting to Verizon 3G, so I guess I just have a bad device. If anyone else runs into this issue, exchange it.
Thanks for your guy's help.
Im on verizon + G950U1, and I dont think this VoLTE calls does anything. Im not getting the crystal clear HD i used to get using my moto x pure. Or is it all in my head?

anybody can see verizon wifi calling on sm-g950u1
Try resetting network settings and reboot your device.
Stumbled upon this thread while researching an unlocked S8 / SM-G950U1 for use on Verizon.
I found this web site, showing it is fully compatible with Big red.

I have an unlocked One Plus 8 pro and verizon and my area now has nationwide 5g. I don't see it though as it still shows LTE. I know this phone doesn't support the UW and we don't have that yet anyway. How can I tell if this is on 5G or is there a way to force it? I read they use band 71 and this phone does support that and my account is setup for 5G.
Anybody?
I guess beta 3 added what we needed for it cause now it shows this on dialer code *#*#4636#*#. Also in setting - sim we got this. So I'll say yeah we got it now. Please my data speed greatly improved over beta 2 with Verizon.
I can get to it via the dialer and manually select it but still no nationwide 5G on Verizon. One Plus says it's Verizon and Verizon says it's the device.
I tried to put it just on NR setting but no go for service were I live. But I'll be heading to the city area on Thursday and I'll try it again with speed tests to see. Verizon has been playing with the towers in my town, not sure if it's the 5G convertion or just plan work but like I said before, my speed test have gone up. I've been getting LTE+ on my phone when I wasn't getting it before the new beta update.

btw, nice username
Nope I am pretty sure all verizon has to do is allow the IMEI but their not that smart or they want you to buy their locked phones

I'm not in America but from what I've read, Verizon have tried to monopolize certain aspects of 5G over there, I think with the device that they provide vs any other.
Tbh though if you've got the international device then it should absolutely work, to prove its 5G capable, test it with a friend's 5G SIM, I'm sure it'll work.. Take some screen shots with it in action then you can point your finger firmly at Verizon and tell them it's on them..also you could try your SIM in another 5G capable phone then that's the last piece of the puzzle, you're phone's capable, their SIMs capable, what's the issue?
If it still doesn't provide 5G in yet another phone then it's their network mate.
If you didn't get your phone from them (international version) then swerve them altogether, I wouldn't pay for something that I wasn't getting, I'd want a nice big discount at the very least.
Did *#*#4636#*#* show the technology available?
Yes if I go to phone information NR is there and with a T-Mobile SIM it did get 5G. This is the unlocked version directly from One Plus.
Are you on the US variant or the International variant of the device?

I followed the instructions from someone on that link. Was able to get 5G.
