Greetings,
The first week or so S4 was out I had gotten one and rooted it. Not very long after that a 'System update downloaded - touch to install' has been on my phone. Many many months later I have decided to finally ask if it is OK to go ahead and update my system and if not to the latest update, then to which? And if I can let my phone automatically do it or if I need to be careful.
I'm afraid I don't remember how I rooted my phone. It was a 1-click exe I believe.
Here is some information that may help.
Android ver: 4.2.2
kernal ver: 3.40- Sat apr 27 2013
software ver: L720VPUAMDL
Hardware Ver: L720.08
Please let me know if you need more information to help me.
Thanks!
You can't take ota updates without breaking root.

IF you take the over the air - OTA update you will be stuck on the MK2 bootloader and will NOT be able to got back to MF9 or earlier if you want/need too. You will trip the Knox counter - read a little and you'll find out what that is; it's been discussed ad naseum..
You can update the firmware without the Knox bootloader as mentioned.
Decide if you care about the Samsung warranty (if you trip the Knox counter you may not be able to have Sammy warranty your device; though Sprint probably will).
Hello!
I'm on my 3rd Android device and I've previously used Cyanogenmod just because it offers the Privacy Guard feature.
However, I didn't realize that this wonderful new-to-me AT& T Galaxy S 4 is substantially more complex when it comes to installing something such as CM. While I'm familiar with using a tool such as heimdall to install a custom recovery, such as TWRP, I haven't previously had to root before.
In going through the FAQ, it states that I should install Safestrap, but the page it links to doesn't include a version for NC1. In searching through the forums, I see that there are other root options, such as Towelroot, but, even if Towelroot works, I have no idea what to do after rooting with Towelroot.
So what I am hoping is that someone can kindly just map out the steps for me to get where I want, which is to have a Privacy Guard type feature on my phone, be it through CM or another ROM. And what I mean by 'map out' is that it isn't necessary to explain every detail of every procedure, just generally list what needs to be done and I can usually figure out the rest.
The phone is currently 'locked' to AT&T and here are the device details:

Hello. I have used this forum many of times and have found great info on rooting. But I am stumped on this. I have

Android Version: 4.4.4

I tried to use towelroot.com and when I tap the sign, all I get is sent to another page with a bunch of visual code. No make it rain, no nothing. Then I downloaded Odin, unzipped the file, did not see a .tar file anywhere and when I put my phone into download mode, connect it to my computer, my device does not show up in the accept box. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or there isn't a rootable way for my device yet. Any information will help. Thanks
Solution.

I have the same exact build number and I managed get my handset stuck in a recovery bootloop. I ODIN back to stock. Back to square one. At least I didn't brick it.
I dont have a g900v, but laat i checked they were in almoat identical boats as the g900a, and last i checked for us, theres no way to root lollipop or downgrade or anything, so the reason you are unable is because you cant.

Thanks. I'll stop trying. It would be insane to fire up ODIN again and flash something older, when they have already patched the stuff. I just wanted 'root', sigh.

I take back my previous post, after poking around in the verizon section it seems all hope is not lost, i recommend having a read over is the verizon galaxy s5 section, your question is more likely to be answered there.

Your problem lies where mine does. Depending on the baseband version you have, means that the bootloader may or may not have an exploit available to allow root etc.
For him, the OA8 version allows a root method. As for you, on OC4 as well as the one I have, OG5, is un rootable as far as I know. At least for right now.
If you require, tethering, mobile Hotspot (if you have unlimited data like me), call recording, ad blocking etc. These things are still possible without root on your Verizon s5. I made a post about it a few pages back. However these are the programs I use for those things while we wait for root .
No root is required for these apps to work properly on the Verizon galaxy s5. They all have free trials but a couple require purchase for full functionality. Money well spent imo.
"Call Recorder" by Skvalex - call recording & management ($8
"PDANET" or "FoxFi" (PDANET includes foxfi) - for tethering & wifi Hotspot ($7)
"Block It!" - VPN ad blocking service. (Free but not available on Google play)
This worked for me

Look for this video on youtube: Galaxy S5 SM-G900V 5 0 Root Successfully. It worked for me and hope this helps you.
Sm-g900v rootable bootloaders?
Hi, a friend has a Galaxy S5 (MetroPCS) he wanted me to unlock. He works at a hotel and any items found in rooms go to their "Lost and found" thing for a 60 day period. This was found and never claimed, so he wants to use it as his own. I've looked through it a bit and it appears it was used by a former drug dealer around town. Huzzah. Anyway.
It appears to already be rooted and has TWRP already installed, though still uses the stock ROM.
My questions are- How would I go about doing a fresh install on it? Also, is there a free way to unlock them or do I have to go through one of those unlock websites?
Here are the specs

I see there's a newer version with 5.1.1. Would I be able to flash that without any major issues instead of the one already on it?

Upgrade it using Smart Switch.
Just an update- I successfully used SmartSwitch to upgrade the phone, kudos for that.
Also ended up going through cellunlocker.net to unlock it. They even sent an unfreeze code with it.
Hello.
I just recently got Galaxy S5 which appears to be only sold in Japan. There's some custom firmware installed on it which prevents Android to be updated. Phone doesn't have SIM locked, so any SIM card can be used.
Because the forum doesn't allow me to post link to a screenshot which shows firmware info I'll just write it down.

I'd like to completely wipe this firmware from the device, replace it with the latest Android version (6.0?) and root it. At first I'd like to know if it's even possible to do any kind of firmware changes on this model and what exactly do I need to perform the update/root.
Thanks.
Doesn't look like there is a 6.0 stock ROM for it, but you can upgrade to 5.0 here
http://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model?r=&v=&q=SCL23
Flash with ODIN (Instructions all over the forum many times)
Okay, instructions on updato seems quite easy to follow so that shouldnt be a problem. Is there any recommended tool for root? I've found a lot of them and I really don't want to mess something up.
PS: How come there's no stock ROM for 6.0 even tho it's been mentioned in some articles that SCL23 model is also supported by Marshmallow update?
Anyone?
Okay, update to 5.0 passed without any issues. There are some default japanese applications on the phone which I cannot uninstall, is it possible to get rid of those somehow?
I have the same device Do you update succeeded or not

Go to this link & download 4.4.2 then follow this tutorial.
Make sure to use key input from the options & use capital letters where needed. All being well you will have everything working again.
Make sure not to use any download manager for the download link. File gets about 100kbps so it'll take a few hours but you will get it.
I did the above then rooted the phone & flashed correct TWRP version to it then flashed 5.0 Lollipop SpaceX rom here. Everything working good & no loss of service on reset or reboot.
Hope it helps
