[SERIOUS] Does the current root method still have annoyances? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answers

I've been on and off the root bus multiple times on this device because while it's nice to have root, there were issues with MMS, issues with heat problems, issues with the device stuttering and feeling laggy and having to apply a different CPU profile. Of course with all of those problems included lesser battery life at times. The list went on.
That being said, is root any better nowadays? Are there any stable ROMs that don't have ANY of these issues? I can honestly live without root if I have to sacrifice any of the above.
Thanks

Have you tried EchoeROM? I haven't gotten the chance yet, but it seems like the best bet at the moment.

Currently running echo. It runs great. Best room so far. Battery life could be better. Just set up force doze and greenify so we will see

I took a good look at it, it sounds like it would be a good ROM that has most annoyances resolved, but reading through the comments it looks like they have a few other small things to address. The Playstore ROM would be best for me but the EngBoot just throws the whole deal off balance and we have to flash a bunch of fixes just so it'll work semi-normal. I hoped it would be pretty smooth sailing by now.

Rooting confusion

To give some background, I've used so many winmo devices and have had no problems unlocking and installing ROMs, etc.
but, now that i've jumped to android i'm just extremely confused with where to start.
to be honest, i am happy with the stock ROM, but i'd like to be able to utilize more RAM, tether, etc. i prefer stability over appearance, so i could care less about having the HTC desire look & feel.
It seems that nearly all of the ROMs are providing the desire look...and I don't even where to begin in rooting my device. Is it possible to root the device, take advantage of extra RAM, while still using the stock ROM?
If there's someone that can walk me through this on AIM or something, i'd be happy to paypal them some $ for their time.

That's perfect for what you're wanting. Have fun!
Just followed all of the steps, thinking I did everything correctly.
I rebooted the phone as per the last step from the recovery screen, and now all I have is the fancy boot animations looping on my device, nothing further is happening at all!
I'm not sure if it's safe to do a battery pull? I've already done the flashing, etc...
Tried a battery pull - and it's still doing the same thing.
Not sure how to proceed with this now.
Edit: Just wiped, and am reflashing.
Edit 2: All good now! phew

Good to hear!
Just a little tid bit, the only time you need to worry about if a battery pull is a bad idea is when you are flashing a radio, or SPL(down the road when there are new ones). If you are seeing boot animations, as you were, there is no fear in a battery pull... and the loop you experienced was a result of not wiping properly.

Archos 101 and 2.2 starting to dislike even more

The more I use this.. the More i realize that Archos needs some majoy fixes coming soon.. The performance on Android 2.2 is actually pretty bad. I think 2.1 ran better.. I can't do more than 2 tabs at a time in the browser. if I do 3 I get mad lag and freezing and often leads to complete freeze if one has flash on it.. Last night it rebooted twice on me after freezing on simple flash sites like Engadget.. My G1 ran better to be honest. Yea it didn't have flash. but my G1 ran better.
At first I was liking 2.2 and it seemed pretty good. but constantly killing tasks trying to keep performance good is getting old. yea yea 256mb ram. People keep saying this, but the Original Droid runs great compared to this. They have pretty similar hardware.. I sure hope root, and a custom rom comes out soon, that or Archos updates 2.2 and actually ENABLES the JIT Compiler and other things this time. cuz performance is slower on 2.2 than on 2.1
I wanna keep this, but I don't at the same time. lol
From what some people with insider information are saying, there will be an update soon. I think they released froyo because they said they would and not because they thought it was perfect. Still have hope something good is coming. Actually I find that the device runs quite ok even though I have to use the task killer very often.

LauncherPro completely eliminated the response lag for me, and I haven't needed to run a kill since I installed it.
There are only two important settings to optimize performance in the Menu->Preferences. In the General Setting, check "Keep in memory". In the Advanced Settings->Memory Usage Settings, set the 'Memory usage preset' to 'High'.
The device is now faster than it was in 2.1. Archos should be shipping this launcher instead of the default (or properly tune the default launcher).

Agreed I am using ADW Launcher and it is now buttery smooth. - Edit: It completed froze up on me several times since then and I have since removed ADW, it was great for responsiveness and scrolling but it was eating memory like crazy.

i noticed major issues with my archos 28 and 43.the problem was because i installed the Google market from archos fans.its cool and all but i erased it and restored them.they ran near perfect.with market installed i had battery issues and touchscreen issues.if you have market installed and your device is acting up,get rid of market and maybe try again.

I have since swiched to Zeam Launcher and I love the drawer, and have not had to kill any processes yet. I may have found a winner!
Try doing a full wipe and reinstall. I was having charging issues and did the full wipe and it not only fixed my charging issue, but it sped the whole thing up (even w/out z4root) ad its been far more stable too.
It does that for me too. Much faster and smoother after a full wipe. Runs perfect now with very rare issues of freezing... I was having much more issues beforehand, even z4root not rooting (Which might have been because of app2sd).
All my apps are on the tiny 300MB space now...
Yup me too. Ut is really snappy without even being rooted.
Did a quadrant without root - got 860.
Rooted - 1019.
No lag and no issues on my 70.

with the new beta firmware the quadrant result is up for 25 %
Ive got the 101 with 2.2 but Im getting ready to sell it off. Im just not happy with it and even IF custom ROMs and perm rooting happens, the limitation of the app storage and 256 RAM is a killer for me. I thought it would perform ok and for some I guess it does but it isnt living up to me standards.
Maybe the G-Tab or Adam will be better
Yea im not sure what i think anymore. I was loving it for a day or 2.
Ive been running LP n it made scrolling better, but thats all. I feel like overall stock is better.
ive been having even more major problems after writing that post. Now archos tv out, music, and video widgets all crash on startup and FC if i try to open them. It has froze completely 4 times tonight. Restarted 3 on its own. Browser cant handle more than 2 tabs.. i just wiped my device back to stock once again. For now things seem pretty good. Ill give it a few days stock n see. But been smooth the last hour or so
Im seriously considering selling it and getting a like new Galaxy Tab. The G was decent, and the N Ink is unproven n not even shown its hardware in a while.. but i have high hopes. Well see. I do agree froyo was not ready n needs some serious work. Archos needs a update asap

Yes, there are a few people that do beta testing.
And i can confirm that without root and setcpu we are now arount 1400-1500.

Great news! Hopefully it is working at least as good as the 1.0.84 (no SMB and WPA2 wifi issues)
Issues keeping me from loving it (I think these are all pretty common):
No access to the files on my WHS except via UPnP (SMB Folder Empty issue)
Graphical lock no longer shows green lines (it does unlock though)
WIFI occasionally quits until I stop/restart it
Flash is slower than dirt and causes Dolphin HD to FC a lot (I ended up uninstalling flash)
General lagginess unless I constantly kill tasks
WHS seems to have an authorisation problem, as with every linux box smb seems to work flawlessly ( as with my buffalo Mini ).
As there is no official Flash you can only have one that was designed for another device, so that explains a little.
I personaly have only seen the remark from archos that they have a hw accelerated version in a certification process by adobe.
And the rest might be already fixed, if i would know anything or could talk about it.

Yeah, the issue is that Archos doesn't give you a way to specify the username/password combination to use to connect to the SMB server. I bet if I turned on guest access to my WHS it would work, but I'd prefer not to do that...

Just ordered a 6p, I have questions for you guys.

So initially the battery life, no OIS, no dt2w kind of deterred me from getting this device but after seeing what else is out now and even trying an iPhone I ordered this after catching up on these forums.
Some questions are, so with system-less root AP should work np? What is proven not to work with system-less root? Also a lot of users are claiming some awesome SOT with cataclysm and elementalx, also I'll mention I really want the dt2w function so would this be the best way to go for best battery life and feature? One other thing I cant believe is no 1080p60 video but does other higher quality videos, please tell me there is a way to enable 1080p60 video recording?
Thats it for now, I'm sure something else will come up. Now I just got to decide on a nice slim case.

Android Pay will work with systemless root, but you need to have stock DPI, and it doesn't work on CM or CM based ROMs. There are a few apps that don't work with systemless root, I don't believe there's a list, though. The best way to go is purely subjective so that's an impossible question to answer, especially since battery performance depends entirely on countless variables that are unique to your phone and how you use it. The only way to find out is by testing yourself. No, there's no way to enable 60FPS at 1080P.

Honestly, I've had a nightmare experience. I'm currently waiting for my fifth unit to be delivered today because I've had four faulty units so far. I think I've just been very unlucky, one with a faulty chipset and three with defective displays. Other than that I thoroughly enjoy this phone. OTA's should be fine with systemless root, as long as you don't modify /system at all.

You can't technically verify it. I know mine was faulty because it was constantly overheating, freezing up, lagging, rebooting. The phone basically couldn't do anything.

First nexus, couple of questions

Hello,
This is my first nexus, getting it tomorrow (12th) really looking forward to it, got the graphite one (getting a case so doesn't matter to me)
Im quite excited about the development, it looks quite busy which is great, I'd just like to ask if anyone has any screen off animations, like the CRT effect or the s6 slide to the edge animation, I'm pretty sure xposed provides these but I'd like to avoid that if possible.
I'll be rooting day one as I've always done on my phones and then off on the hunt for a rom.. Glad to be a part of the nexus gang for once, hope it's as good as I've heard..
Second question was list view animations, again I'm aware that there are xposed mods XUI mod which can do these for me, but again I'd like to avoid them.. I think there will be some roms with this feature baked in but thought I'd ask anyway just incase there isn't..
Thanks chaps.

Not OP, but I've also been avoiding xposed. My impression is that I've seen enough negative comments about unpredictable behavior when paired with Franco Kernel, I think Franco himself may have even commented on it, and if I have to choose between the two I'm going with FK. I wish xposed could be super stable and compatible and predictable though, because I'm dying for some of it's features and I don't want to leave the stock ROM.
ALSO, it wasn't immediately apparent the requirements for using it, and the processes to install it (there are multiple parts, right? there used to be), and where we go for an aggregated list of mods like Cydia on iOS. Seemed like too much work for too much potential buginess.

Can't speak to the Franco kernel but I have used Xposed with Kylo, stock and God's kernel and have never had one issue with Xposed. You have to flash the installer with TWRP but otherwise its super easy.

Its a fair question, and the answer is unpredictable battery drain, extremely poorly updated and Un optimized mods, obviously not all of them but a lot.
As I said in the OP the list view animation has been done, I've had it on CandyRom on my M9, it works really well but I haven't seen a screen off animation since kit kat, the stock animation now is to fade away, if you slow down animations within development settings you'll see it on locking your phone. I'd just like a one time mod to be able to alter that to something else.
Once you've got it on your phone you like it and get used to it then you miss it when it's not there.
Personally I would like to avoid xposed, it does have a negative impact on your battery for that I'm sure.

I actually wrote a tutorial on how to install xposed and the two above modules however after doing this and living with it vs not having xposed, same apps same rom. There was a huge difference in battery performance, hence why I'd like to avoid xposed altogether.

This is part of my problem too. If there are stand alone mods I'd prefer them over xposed.
Its like having the Facebook messenger app when the original Facebook app was more than enough, why have two apps when 1 will do.
There used to be stand alone mods for older devices, I'm not sure if it's possible any more or its just because there's less demand for it, but I always ask when I get a new phone.

Interesting. Definitely not my experience... I have used Xposed from the start and get about 5 hours SOT as a standard with WiFi, cellular and GPS on all day (solid signal in NYC). Are you getting significantly more than 5 hours SOT without Xposed?

I haven't noticed any difference in battery after installing xposed. I'm running on the stock rom/kernal with 0 issues. I use xposed for Gravity box , gesture nav, greenify, and youtube background playback. Maybe it's something with the modules you've downloaded.

Perhaps, but the point is, if you could have the modifications which you've obtained through xposed without actually using an exploit like xposed, would you? I think you would.
This is what i'm looking for.

I also don't want to spark a debate here as it's besides the point of what i originally asked, xposed is an app that allows mods, i personally given the chance would prefer to have the mods on their own, i know they can be done as i've seen them on previous devices (see my phone list below)
Just want to know if they exist on this device ? As it's a nexus i'd assumed that it was one of the most modded types of android out there.
Either way i'm more than happy with the device, it's a nice bit of kit.
Just my two cents here though to settle what you'd asked me, do i notice better battery without xposed, well yes i have noticed it to be better, a clean flash and then back to a normal rom and battery has been better.
There are many benefits to being without xposed, bug reporting for one, if you have xposed you can't bug report as it invalidates it, for me battery has been substandard with it, so i'm hoping with this phone i can avoid it and get the mods in a flashable zip.
Hoping

No worries...was more curious about your experience. If you were getting 8 hours SOT or something i would drop Xposed like a hot rock haha. I normally would go the ROM route but I have to use Airwatch for work and every ROM I tried made the device show as compromised.

What about using an older version of the app, that's how I use my banking app, the new one won't work but a few versions before and its all good.
Try it , might be OK.
I never measured screen on time, I measure by days, and events during the day, like how much battery on the way home, similar usage but xposed used more, from what I saw.

New security update for tmobile 3/21/17

I havent updated yet. Just want to find put more information if fix or break anything
UPDATE: just did the update. Phone feel much snappier and fingerprint works much faster. It was already good enough with nougat update but now is even more accurate

From my personal experience i have seen that tmobile update make the phone snappier, better battery life etc or the other way around even when they only state is only a security patch update
I got the update and now I can't login to my phone. It wants me to put in the password (just once, then I can use fingerprint again like before). But I never setup a PIN and now I can't get into my phone!!
at a "whopping" 51Mb, that's not a lot of updates. The "faster" effect is probably placebo.

"Futher improve to perfomance" so kernel mods changing and modifying a few codes for better perfomance which take no memory is also a placebo effect. Gonna have to explain that to all the kernel and tweakers developers in xda.
This is not a new OS or OS upgrade. Doesnt need to be 1gb to get better improvement on the phone. U can try the update and see. Im loving the speed.

Every update says the same darn thing. If you go look at the google code revisions, you'll be disappointed. Besides, I did this update many hours ago, not one iota difference in noticeable speed on my NON ROOTED STOCK device. I reboot every morning so I get the nice, fresh "fastest" possible speeds, at least until standard android and samsung bog downs occur by the end of the day.
But, if your gut says you feel a difference, more power to you.
About Kernel mods here. They take existing base and tweak specifically for speed at a trade off of potential stability. Google and Samsung, neither are well known for real speed improvements. They shoot for stability over mass numbers of devices vs speed. Their professional developers that know and work with the code day in and day out would nothing more than love to tweak it and massively optimize it for even their own devices but they have to march the corporate line.

That happened with me while on MM. It took 3 factory resets from recovery before it let me in without a pin.

If u look back when this phone was release a year ago and all thr updates tmobile has done it s now. Completly different phone, speed and perfomance wise. Phone also doesnt hit up like a toaster like when the phone was release.
Is funny u said to go and check every update. Cause if u do the same here in xda u are going to find out most member talking about improvement, battery life and other thnlings. But i guess all of them are wrong cause is all a PLACEBO effect. If samsung didnt care about perfomance why is the U version the fastest and better version. This is why almost everyone is waiting on the nougat U version including me.
Feel sorry for u that u have to restart your phone everyday. U most have a lemon GS7 edge. I never have to do this to feel my phone fresh and fast.

This is pure BS! When I searched the web for this issue I found that this has happened before and as far back as at least 2 years ago!!
I mean, this seems like a straightforward fix from Google's side...Have the updates NOT trigger PIN requirement if there's was no PIN present. For anyone that's more familiar with such things, am I oversimplifying it here? It's just that easy isn't it?
I guess i will be updating in the am.

Seems like a small change, but I am getting better standby time. Left the phone unplugged all night last night after the update, a wipe of the cache, and a full charge. Woke up today it still had 96% battery left at least a 3% improvement over before the update.
I'll run the test again tonight to see if I get similar results. It's a pretty nice improvement if it stays that way.

Probably felt faster simply because you restarted the phone as part of the installation process.

No I leave ambient off. I have my Gear Fit 2 so there really is no need to have my display on.
