Ready to come aboard - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Time for a new phone and it looks like I'm gonna go with the S7 Edge. I know it might be a guessing game but do any of you guys have a feel for whether Samsung might run a promo again soon. The store is offering the VR headset or a 256 card, neither of which overly enthuse me right now.
Wasn't sure if the iPhone launch and maybe the Pixel launch may help with my timing? (the Pixel does interest me though).
Any edumacated guesses out there?
Thanks!

Were you able to find it in a store or did you order it?

I've been thinking of getting one, if only for the pr0n.
I ordered mine already, should be here Monday. I can't wait.
The Gear VR is an exelent add on the N4, still in early apps development stages but the potentials are limitless. You'll be able to experience movie theater sound and vision like never before right in your leaving room, watch movies in Hi Def and 3D with the Gear VR, stream any type of contents. Contents are added almost in the daily basis. Takes gaming to a whole new level with gamepad or the touch sensible pad. Like I said, anybody getting a Gear VR device is considered early adopters for whom gets it now but when contents get released, this device will be a must own for GN4 users.

Sorry, ordered it from best buy and choose next day shipping. It is awesome. I watched a movie today with the Oculus cinema and it is really almost like you're in a movie theater watching a huge screen. That in itself was worth the money I spent. The virtual oceans are awesome. I've downloaded pretty much everything in the store. The content is a little lacking right now but they promise more to come. It's all free right now. If your on the fence just do it. ..you won't regret it.

+1 :good: pretty damn awesome. got the vr like 3 weeks ago and i've shown it to all my coworkers and many of my friends (15+people who were mostly some what skeptical), and pretty much everyone was mind-blown
definitely recommend it for anyone with N4. it's a guaranteed new experience that you and your family/friends will enjoy

A major DITTO here. It is awesome fun.

Unless you have tired the Gearvr you really cant explain how cool it is.
The virtualrealporn.com demo videos are the best demonstration of how immersive it is.

Now only if we could see our hands and move in the virtual space
I have been watching the VR market and this is very interesting.
My main concern is how well will the VR headset be supported when the Note 5 comes out? Dropping $200 on a headset which is only supported by one device seems a tad crazy.
Granted, the technology is very cool and I have yet to own one.
so so
Pixley and overheats alot, u have to clean the lens all the time and it fogs up easily as well. the downsides to it... The upside is that u can swim with sharks, and the horror game feels so real i dont dare to play it, tried 3 times
does netflix work with it
I've done a little research on Gear VR vs. Cardboard and pretty much everyone says that Gear VR is a far superior device, but there isn't much substance behind those opinions. Obviously Gear VR is more comfortable and has much better lenses that provide a better "field of view". Besides these things, is it really a "night and day" experience? I've been impressed with Cardboard but I mostly bought it because it's a cheap way to see what all the VR fuss is about. I realize that VR is a rapidly advancing technology and there might soon be devices that support eye tracking drool: ) and other cool features, so I'm on the fence. Should I pay the $200 (which seems steep to me) or hold out for better options to come in the next year or so?
I'm hoping that Best Buy will have a demo unit for the in-store release this Sunday. That might help me decide.
Definitely worth the $200. Even with the small amount of content available, the experience is worth it. Best buy has a 14 day return policy so you can always bring it back.
Got mine this week, resolution is a little rough, (about 720 I'd guess) there's significant screendoor effect, and it overheats.
All that out of the way, it's pretty damn good, I'd honestly love to trash it, am no fan of Samsung, but it's neat as hell. (GF is Korean, so I'm obligated to keep her happy with Korean products, Samsung in particular, LOL) Anyway, got her a Note 4 a month or so ago, got a Gear VR this week, and I'm pretty well blown away.
Highly recommended if you already own a Note 4.

Totally agree I think the One still has good specs which will last me a good while. Plus as the one has been out for 15 months there will be more mod support for it. Only thing I would like is OIS and laser auto but for my usage its a niggle rather than a problem. Looking forward to COS12.1 and Oxygen v2 though. Probably will flash Cyanogenmod later down the line though.
The Moto X Style looks like it might be a better phone than the Oneplus 2 to me, but neither are a big enough leap to have me pining for a new phone. I'll be sticking with the OPO for at least another year, and I can even envision stretching it into 2017 unless there's a really compelling leap in tech. To me we're at the point where these incremental updates really aren't doing much.
If they buy back my OPO, then I can move to OP2.

Nopes! There's no point at all to upgrade to OP2 from OPO considering it's just a refreshed version, nothing major is introduced. Instead, they stripped down some features. OPO is still performing amazingly well and the dev support is just awesome.
i will and of course i'll keep my ONE as well while the nexus 5 goes to my grand son. easy as that.
I unlock my Lastpass using NFC so I will definitely not buy it UNLESS I Lastpass will work with the fingerprint scanner of the OP2.
If the new nexus disappoints or is too high a price for the hardware then I might as well.
NFC I never use and I charge my phone overnight anyway. I'll be giving my one to my dad if that happens
Edit: you know what probably not since its heavier and thicker. I really don't like that aspect mostly the thicker part. Since there some metal I expect it heavier anyway

no way!! I'm not jumping through the hoop again for an invite. I'm settled now and their customer services suks. Maybe op3 or op4 when I can buy instantly.
No way lol. I'm getting one of the new Nexus phones most probably. Then jump to the OP3.

Wait for the Axon 7 or jump on the 128gb Nexus 6p that ends tomorrow?

Oh man!! Decisions, decisions!
NewEgg has the 128gb 6P listed at $500 on their ebay for 2 days only (ends tomorrow).
I'm trying to decide if I want to go with guaranteed software updates for the next few years, or some hardware that I've been waiting for, for several years (the good speakers), but not quite the software development the Nexus will receive (from Google and custom ROM bakers).
Ultimately, I'm going to do what I want... Just curious what the masses think?:fingers-crossed:
Axon 7..... I was tempted as well, but the Axon 7 is the only device in years that has checked off all the boxes on my list of things I wanted in a device.
Also, I think this device will have decent Dev support. Even the OnePlus 2 I just sold had decent support and it was a very hated upon device. Besides, with it being a Google Daydream VR capable device; they're going to have to update it to N as soon as possible for that functionality.
I was looking at a CNET video on YouTube and it said that the phone will run the ZTE operating system and it can be changed to run a pure stock Android system.

That's what the reps are pretty much saying on the ZTE forums. Supposedly their skin is light, and kinda close to stock; but you can also either turn the skin off or run a different build. The last part hasn't been cleared up as to how just yet? It's good to see they're listening though.
Axon 7 all the way!
I have been following the Axon 7 but am worried about it being locked down tight like their previous devices. I haven't read anything about this trend being reversed with the 7. With secureboot enabled with the SD820 if they don't allow us to unlock the bootloader their will be no Dev support as is the case with the US S7. I sold my N6P and miss it to the point where I'm almost ready to buy another. I've decided to wait just a bit to see what ZTE gives us but won't buy it unless it's unlockable.

That's a tough one... Android updates Vs better specs and what promises to be really good audio (both from the speakers and headphone jack).
I carry two phones ( work and personal) I have a Nexus 6p 128GB and an LG G5. I think I may replace with G5 with the Axon 7 as I want that superior audio as both the 6P and G5 are inferior to my old Note 4 in that regard.
I guess it depends how important update is to you...
Good luck and Alons-y!

l'm holding out for the Axon 7.... Sold my S7 Edge that I traded my 6P for (because I knew I was going to flip it really quick and the S7 would bring more). So I have $600 sitting in my "new phone fund" (otherwise known as my guitar case) and I'm anxiously awaiting.
The Moto Z with the add-on audio module looks cool, but is fairly bulky with the speaker module on it. If I'm going to go through the steps to snap on a module, I'll just grab my bluetooth speaker....So Axon 7 it is.
If it gets rooted and has a strong development following, software updates won't be an issue. I'll keep my fingers crossed for that.
Geronimo!!!! (although 10 is my favorite)

Where to now?

I don't think there's a thread that's solely about this but just out of curiosity, where's everyone going? I'm thinking of going to google pixel but that price point is.... a bit too much.
I can't decide. Gotta get rid of it though which sucks. Feel like a fool downgrading to an S7E but the phone seems good. If they had 128gb iPhone 7 plus available I might get that. Never had an iPhone before so I'm not sure if I'd like ios but I like the looks of the phone and the speed. The main thing that worries me about the s7e is its only 32gb and I've never used an SD card before. Also I'm going to be real bummed if the s8 comes out and it's awesome but I can't get it because I used my upgrade on the s7e.

I feel the same way about the s8 being released. Yeah all the phones right now feel like a downgrade. I have a s7 active on one line and an open note 4 device. So I'm gonna move those around and probably use the s7 active if I really want to wait.
I might get iphone 7 plus but i will surely miss note 7 & its unique features. Don't want to go back to s7e or any other android as of now. I have used iphones before but its only worth for me if jailbroken. RIP Note 7
I just took my first step out of the Note 7 world. I ordered the Oneplus 3. Should hold me over until the next big thing comes around. One positive note I will still have note 7 for a couple of weeks until the one plus 3 arrives.
I'll likely be going to the v20 because it's not a downgrade to the level the s7 edge is and I'll be able to keep the BOGO deal we got on our note 7's. Otherwise I'd likely go to the pixel xl
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N930A using Tapatalk
I ended up on the S7 Edge, so far not too bad. Yet it is definitely a downgrade. I did get the 256gb SD card, and glad that works with the s7e. I would rather have the N7, but this will do. The battery is great, the screen is close to the same size. After disabling the AT&T and Google bloat, it runs smooth. I looked at the other phones out there, and the display is what has always grabbed me about Samsung, you get used to amoled and can't go back. AoD is getting better on the S7 edge and they are working on making some form of s note available.

I'd like to hold out for the Pixel XL... I'm not a fan of LG. Personally, the likelihood of a phone failure now is quite remote. 100 issues (at best) out of 3 million phones is better odds than getting struck lightning in Tampa. I'd just as soon keep the 7, but if they force the issue by blacklisting IMEI, then there is little other option...
What other options other than S7Edge for fast wireless charge are there???

I'm going to the LG V20. I had an Optimus G Pro before my Note 4 (which i had before the Note7), and I loved that phone. Great battery life and fun to modify via root. Though, the battery life I got WAS due to root. Lol
Then I went to the Note 4 for the stylus. I felt like I took a hit with battery life, and the N4 seemed more boring for some reason, but it was OK.
So I'm thinking of going back to LG for at least the rest of this generation of phones, and may return to Samsung if they come out with a Note8 and if it turns out to be better than both the N7 and the V20. I won't preorder though. I'm going to wait at least 2 months to see how the phone behaves. No fires, no issues, and if it has everything I want, then yeah, sure, I'll then buy one.

I did, but I wasn't impressed. If they had made a Moto X Pure 2016 model I would have been very tempted. The screen on that phone was very close to the 5.7 Super amoled that we note fans love. They just didn't make one this year. The mods seem like a cool idea tho.

This guy gets it! :good: Same thoughts all the way around, so I won't repeat anything he said.
I am going with the V20, I can't downgrade to anything else. I would have gladly picked up some kind of bootloader unlocked Moto Z Force if it existed, but stupid VzW over here had to make it exclusive.... I wanted to stay with Moto from my X Pure 2015, but there is no equivalent this year like the last post also mentioned.
The ONLY problems with the V20 for me are:
No stylus
No wireless charging
No waterproofing
No shatterproof screen
The last one refers to the Moto Z Force of course, not the Note7, but it is late 2016, I feel like we shouldn't be worried about our phones as much as we have in the past when manufacturers are doing so much to defend them from drops or spills. LG unloads this V20 and it's almost looking fragile to me!

With Lenovo laying off massive numbers of Moto people, and stating there's more to come in 2017, I don't trust them to continue following through with updates. But if you're rooted, that may not matter anyhow.

I tested out the 6s+ for a week just to get a feel for iOS again. It ain't for me. Whether it's emulation, torrents, S Pen, or Samsung Pay: Android natively does more than iOS natively allows me to.

Well I hope that's true. However, I already bought google pixel xl. So....... Oh well for them

My review of the Mate 9 and I am a self confessed Samsung Fanboy!!!

See my signature below for the range of phones I have owned, that is: every Galaxy Note including the Edge (except the Note 5 as it wasn't available in the UK), every Galaxy S series phone since the S3 and many other Samsung phones, tablets and smartwatches!! So pretty much into Samsung you could say!
So, I was reading an article about the best phones of 2016/17 to date and obviously the S7 Edge was up there along with various others including the Huawei Mate 9. I had never considered buying anything beyond Samsung, except maybe Sony, HTC and Google devices and really looked at Huawei as being a cheap and cheerful Chinese brand that couldn't possibly be of interest. But the article gave the Mate 9 a huge thumbs up. It got me curious.
I was due for an upgrade on my contract and was still grieving over the loss of my Note 7. I think my S7 Edge is a fantastic phone but it really lacks the big screen I was used to. So out of interest, I watched endless reviews of the Mate 9 and all I could hear was huge praise for it, with very little to complain of. I was interested in a big screened alternative and decided to give it a look over and order one.
After a few days with the Mate 9, I was so impressed and I mean REALLY impressed that my S7 Edge is now destined for eBay. Sure I will miss the Gear VR and wireless charging and... well nothing else really. So I spent a day or two transferring all my stuff over and installing all my apps and all that painstaking setup you do with a new phone. It all works flawlessly, even with my Gear S3. I love the big crisp screen, the impressive battery life, the camera, the design, the performance, the rapid fingerprint scanner and the little extra features not found on other phones. I love the IR blaster, stereo speakers and 64Gb+ storage and rapid charge. Yes, I can say that this beats the S7 Edge in most of my preferences and has convinced me there are other excellent phones out there not made by the top manufacturers for Western markets. Huawei has exceeded my expectations and I love that.
OK, when the Note 8 arrives later this year, I am probably going to jump ship again. Afterall I have always held the Note series as my ideal phone. But you know, I am still going to be keeping more of an eye out for what Huawei and Xiaomi have to offer too. If you are on the fence I say go for the Mate 9. It won't be a bad choice. Take it from a Samsung fanboy!
.
I agree.
It's the little extra things Huawei does, AND this one's quick!
You can tell the difference in screens though when you're playing certain games or watching videos side by side.
Otherwise, yes. Till the Note 8....
I'm the same that have been using Sammy phones from the S1 up to the Note 4 and stopped when the Sammy decided to take away that memory card slot. Then when the Note 7 announced with the coming back of the sd card with Note 7, I was destined to get that to replace the 4. Lucky I didn't ad I almost got the preorder if not for the stuff up of the telco of my order. Anyhow, the new phone itch got to me that I had to find one with the large screen like the Note. I'm extremely happy that I made the right choice in choosing the Mate 9 at the end.
Same here, and loving the Mate 9!

Me too. Mate 9 should keep me happy until the Note 8 comes out.

I totally agree with you, I was in the same boat. I had a Note 7 (which I loved), had to trade it in and get a S7 Edge, not what I wanted, mainly because the downgrade of internal storage space. If you are using a 64 GB phone and have to go to 32 GB you really notice it. I looked at the LG V20 or Pixel as an alternative but I just could not get into the look and feel of it for the V20 and the Pixel doesn’t take an SD Card which I need.
So Man I am glad I held out for the Mate 9 only thing I have to say I truly miss is the wireless charging (love being able to just pick my phone up from charging) and the many accessory options but other than that, I don’t miss anything else. Don’t miss the waterproofing or the actual edge panel like I thought I would (There’s an app for that).
This phone is amazing from the looks, speed, to little things like being able to swipe down on the fingerprint scanner to expand the notification bar, simply amazing. Only reason I haven’t sold my S7 Edge yet because of the rumored free S8 or discounted Note 8 because of the battery fire fiasco. Not sure if I’ll have to trade in my S7 edge or not for the deal. But I agree the Mate 9 is an AWESOME device.

Yeah we pretty much think alike.
I was never under the impression that we would get a better deal on the S8 or Note 8 as ex Note 7 customers though. I am guessing it depends on your country, the supplier and/or whether you directly traded in the Note 7 for the S7E. I got a refund then went to Argos to buy the S7E as it was cheaper by £100!
Where did you hear about this deal? Also I doubt that they would need you to prove you still owned the phone, just that you actually purchased it in the first place.
But yeah, the Mate 9 is a far better alternative (for now) than the S7E if you want a powerful featured large screen phone.

It was pretty much a rumor around the time the whole Note 7 ordeal took place, I haven't heard anything lately, but I am sure it will surface again once the S8 is released but I read it here initially: http://www.androidheadlines.com/201...ning-free-galaxy-s8-for-note-7-customers.html
and http://phandroid.com/2016/10/24/samsung-galaxy-s8-discounts-for-note-7/
How does starting a text work on the gear S3 with the Mate 9? I'm about to upgrade my wife from the Samsung J7 to this phone and was thinking about getting one for myself as well I currently have the S7 edge. I love wireless charging but I can give it up, I do use Samsung pay but honestly not enough to miss. My biggest problem with switching would be the compatibility with the watch. Any help with that would be greatly appreciated

Exactly the same figure here. Coming from Note 1,2,3,4,5 and 7, when I had to return my loved beast, got a S7E, but did not like it, mainly because of the smaller screen. But the fire thing with the N7 was good for us because we could finally think about other brands like Huawei and its wonderful Mate 9. I am very impressed with all those "small features" like turning apps off just after locking the device, giving us the option to choose which apps will be turned off.
I just did not like the firmware update service from Huawei. I bought my phone in another country and it seems the only method I can use to upgrade the firmware if by funky huawei, which is a paid service, fortunately provided by a XDA member. But this is something we had for free with Sammy (not so fast indeed).

You can get OTAs if you get a SIM from the region of your phone.
Thanks. Yeah I know. But for some regions like mine (Latin America) it seems there is not any update newer than B110, from November. So I had to rebrand my phone to the European model. OK, it is still the best phone I had, pairing only with the much missed Note 7.

You simply open the contacts app on the watch, select recipient and you can either call or text. When you select text, it opens up a compose box with the keyboard. Works well from my experience. I was concerned my Gear S3 wouldn't work as well with a non Samsung device, but so far no issues at all. You will need to install S-Health on your phone (if you use that) and for texting, the best app is Textra (which is pretty much the best SMS app for Android anyway! ) The stock one allows notifications but doesn't allow you to reply from the watch whereas Textra does.

After using it for a few weeks, I'm going to sell mine and go back to my Note 5. While it's a good temp phone, it;s not for me and I'll just stick with Samsung. I have the Chinese 6/128 that was rebranded to EU L29-c432b138

OK
I had tried Textra awhile back on my S7 edge and it wouldn't let me start a text on my S3 told me I had to use the stock app . I'm not a fan of the stock app that much there's somethings Textra does better.
I'm still on the fence if I'm going to upgrade to the Mate 9 from my S7 honestly.
The mate's battery life is the main thing that draws me in..
At this stage of the game may as well just wait for the s8 and see what that brings.

If you use a Samsung phone with the watch then it will nag you to use the stock app. But Textra works flawlessly with the Mate 9 and Gear S3 (Huawei's stock messaging app doesn't)
As I said, you've nothing to fear using this phone/watch combination. I am doing well with both

Not if the s8 is gonna be close to the rumored $1000 that's crazy.

Well we won't know for a month but yeah wouldn't surprise me - Note 7 was pretty expensive as well.
