Hello Community.
I am new to the Nexus forums. Previously with HTC and Samsung Android devices. The root process has always been extremely simple and for the most part a pc was never needed with Samsung devices. I am now an owner of a TMobile Nexus 4 and would like to know what is the easiest process to obtain root on my device? Im not looking to do much, just want to get rid of some apps I dont use that are locked into the stock ROM.
Is there an automated root process (one click root) or anything similar? Ive read through the Root Guide but im a bit hesitant to use anything related to command prompts unless its the only way.
Thanks

Learn to use the command prompt. This will save you if you ever run into issues. As a nexus is a developers device you will not find any one clicks here. It is better to know what you are doing then for someone else to do it for you.

Install the drivers for your phone download su.zip to your phone download a recovery img to you computer open a command prompt type
fastboot OEM unlock
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
then flash the su.zip in recovery reboot done
From my BLACKED OUT N4
Look for the unlock without losing data method. Can't remember what it's called, maybe someone will enlighten.
The best way isn't always the easiest way. Using a toolkit is the easiest way, especially if you're not confident with using command prompts. That's the method I used to root, and had great success with Wug's nexus toolkit. Like was posted previously, rooting via fastboot is the better way, because you're not depending on someone else's work to do the job for you. Plus you'll learn more about your phone and how to fix it should something go wrong.
I find following a video step by step very helpful. I used this to root my N4:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sV355YEDzc8
WugFresh toolkit is the easiest that you're going to find. It even allows you to easily unroot and oem lock.
You should learn command prompt like stated but the tool kit is the easiest.

Its very simple just don't reboot the phone after you do oem unlock just flash the recovery right after then wipe caches and reboot.

First I have been to and searched every post and site I can find to turn this thing around, with no success. Sent several emails.
Took a rooted New Nexus 7 that had been restored back because it froze/did not respond. Got a new N7, unlocked bootloader and installed TWRP using Terminal (Mac) booted into recovery (TWRP) it said you are not rooted, install SU by swiping below. I swiped and tried to reboot and it stops at X. I have wiped, reinstalled TWRP and used a One Click Toolkit to Root. no success. Not really sure what I did wrong.....given I have always trusted TWRP.
Anyway... have unlocked bootloader, TWRP installed and cannot get Android File Transfer to recognize device. Welcome help or suggestions.
Thank you in advance.
David
Same thing happened to me. Don't listen to TWRP about SU. You'll need to do it manually for it to be successful. Follow the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2381582. This won't relock your bootloader. You just need to root it by flashing the SU zip found on one if the "How to root" threads.

Yeah, youre correct, you have to manually flash twrp. I would suggest running the utility to make youre device boot again, then make sure you have the LATEST twrp, then reboot and flash COMPATIBLE SU and you should be golden. Im not sure about macs though but you should deff be goin the right way.
Thank you, I used that site the last time I got into trouble. Do you or anyone know of a Mac site that will get me out of this rut. I won't have access to a PC for a few days and am anxious to set this tablet up.
Thank you for response,

If you were able to install using a Mac, then you should have no troubles setting things up again. Avoid toolkits if you can, especially during the early days where things are buggy.
If you put your tablet into fastboot though, you can get started by going ahead and running fastboot -w and then flashing the stock recovery images back on. Sure, you won't have root, but I've found that 1) root doesn't take super nicely unless you're already signed into the tablet anyway, and 2) regardless of 1), once your bootloader is unlocked you might as well get set up and then root afterwards.
Mine did the same thing. What I did to fix was:
1. Go into recovery and format data in the wipe menu.
2. Then factory reset.
3. Restart os.
This was posted by decksy post #11 in tutorial for unlock, recovery, and root thread so if it works thank him.

Hello,
Does anyone know how to root the new ASUS Zenpad 10?
I tried the method for the Zenpad S, Kingo app, DingDong app and Towelroot app none have worked.
Any ideas on how to root this tablet are appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Specs
OS: 5.0 (Lollipop)
CPU: Intel Atom x3-C3200 Quad-Core, 64bit
What about iRoot? Looks like it might have worked for other Intel Atom x3 tablets.

But I sold the Zenpad, I never got a chance to try iRoot. If any one has a Zenpad 10 and would like to try iRoot to confirm if it works or not, that may be good for other people who read this thread.
I've tried iRoot but without success.

Actually, I am with ^, I am wondering if some people are having luck with this tablet. I was thinking about using root for some gaming reasons, but towel root isn't working and there isn't anything like nexus root toolkit, so I think that I am going to screw up the tablet if I do it the old fashioned way because I don't have much knowledge in that area and don't want to mess up my brand new tablet without good reason.
I can't get fastboot working... I can boot into fastboot mode but my PC does not detect it (adb works fine). Tried on Ubuntu 15.10 64 bit and Windows 10 (10240) 64 bit.

I tried all the four T options, but nothing..recovery choice doesn't matter, if bootloader doesn't accept the flash commands..
Note that I tried also the standard command "fastboot own unlock", just to see if bootloader is unlockable..Fastboot seems to accept the command, but after reboot bootloader still locked.
I tried rooting the device using adb too..the problem is located into the default.prop file, where some parameters don't allow adb to retain or gain root permissions. Those parameters are:
ro.secure=1, which forces adbd daemon to drop its permissions to the standard (shell) user, even if it always starts as super user at the beginning (while if to.secure is set to 0, it allows the adbd daemon to retain root permissions after starting);
ro.debuggable=0, which doesn't allow adb to gain root in production builds using the command "adb root" (if ro.debuggable is set to 1, it allows adb to gain root permission and the subsequent procedure for pushing the su binaries.
No luck at all..neither using the "one click root" tools, like kingo and similars, of course. I'm trying to find some tricks for rooting this baby, I'll update you guys with news, if I find something
Oh, btw, I missed to underline that I'm trying to find a method which doesn't force me to unpack the entire firmware, extract and unpack ramdisk, extract and rewrite the default.prop file, and then repack the whole stuff just to make adb working with root permissions..it is possible, but I consider it as the LAST chance (I'll do it though, if I won't find other ways)

Recently bought Zenpad 10 z300c from China and it has all the chinese apps that i don't want. Nowadays everything is using Google Services and for some reason i can't get it to work, they always crash. So im also looking for way to root it. There is no way to change the firmware without root from CN to WW right? My tablet also goes to fasboot but windows 7 can't find it.

Yes now I'm on CM13 but I did my root on COS 12.1 before, KingRoot works on both ROMs for me.
Yes, for me rooting gives a lot as I'm using Xposed modules like Amplify and Greenify and some other nice software, but if you don't find it useful don't do it Read on internet what ROOT gives, it's not useful for everybody, but for me is essential.

Hi guys,
I have been trying to root my device for 2 days, with no success.
I have tried 2 different Windows computers, just to make sure that I wasn't making any mistake with the drivers. The problem is that I never get to see my device when I launch the command "adb devices". Developer option is activated, ADB modeas well, OEM unlocking as well. Driver installed (Google generic one and tried also ZUK USB drivers 1.0.5), I get to see 3 devices in System Properties:
- under portable devices
E:\
Z1
- under ShenQi ADB Devices
android ADB interface
Can anyone suggest what should I do?
I don't get the RSA Authentication authorization request from the device once I plug it in....
Really no idea of what to do. Should I try kingroot?
Thanks in advance

Use the tool in the link below and follow instructions. It will do everything for you and install a custom recovery and let you install su.
Would recommend uninstalling all previous USB drivers and start again.

Hi Guys, I recently purchased an used fire TV stick of binge edition from Tata Sky from a person. Binge needs a Tata Sky subscription to use the Binge service from Tata Sky!
Before purchasing it that person told me that I can use the fire TV stick as a normal fire TV stick if you didn't want to use the binge service! As I didn't knew anything about that I purchased it blindly trusting him!
When I brought the fire tv stick at home it was not opening any app e.g. YouTube, Hot star etc. I tried side loading apps through my mobile and they too didn't worked on it!
I searched the internet to find any way to install the normal OS of fire TV (by removing the pre-installed binge edition OS) in it. But I didn't find any way to make that happen. Many videos used king root etc to root and install the TWRP recovery in but the thing is due that binge service it cant open any app in the stick! Then I searched the internet to find any way to root n install other OS in it but didn't find any way to do that!
I tried calling back the person I purchased the stick but his phone is switched off since then!
If any one knows any trick or tweak to make the fire TV stick work then please help me! I am stuck with the stick here!!
Error message shown while opening any app is as follows, "Your Tata Sky account maybe deactive. Kindly recharge on your Tata Sky mobile app or...."

Unlocking and installing the custom rom would work too (as 0815hoffi posted) and probably the best long term solution if somehow that stick is blacklisted. But you may be able to reboot into recovery and do a factory reset from recovery. ADB reboot recovery (assuming you have access to adb).

No it cant be done in windows (no worries, I'm not a Linux guy and it was easy), the easiest way is to use the fireOS live disk. It is pre-setup. Download and burn to USB, reboot, select boot from USB...
