Is OnePlus 2 Android Development Dead? - OnePlus 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I love OnePlus. I bought the OPO and it have a great development community over here on XDA. I have been using my OP2 since it released and I am happy with the phone, but it really does seem to be lacking in development. Most kernels and ROMs are either abandoned or are riddled with bugs.
Is the development community for the OP3 better?

nope... it's just oneplus3 is newer and they must support it more to let people buy it... in my honest opinion.. oneplus is the most slower vendor ever.. oneplus is now what HTC was in 2013/14 regarding updates... the system is great but the update releasing is so slow and frustrating that i want to get my money back and buy a Nexus6P

yep its dead, the most popular roms developers fail to address major issues.

What's up with our development?

Guys,am i the only one,or anyone else feels like everyone has forgotten us? We haven't had any serious development in months now,and we haven't got any nightiles from many roms in a long time, only from three of them actually, PA,Quarx's CM11 and Slimkat weeklies. And what about other ROMs? Like liquidsmooth,Vanir,EOS,AOKP? I think it's pretty sad that our device has been forgotten by everyone, especially because its a development frendly device. Any thoughts on this?
Jax = top lane god.
And its probably because of all the hype about android 5 for nexus devices. Just wait until our phone gets Android 5 [emoji41]
I feel that the community also had a hand in this matter. A dev left and others are complaining about the attitude of the community.
Too many people whining and requesting for dual sim support has pushed away all the good devs from dev work. :/
I'm pretty sure many developers are waiting until 5.0 comes out so they can work on lollipop builds
It's because of the amount of disrespect that the users show to the devs that they're stopping development. The users behave as though it's their right to get everything they want from devs instead of appreciating their work.
What would serious developement be? PA is almost final and bugless, and now supports dual sim. CM is still delivering nightlies and you got many unofficials for almost any project (Mahdi, DU, Carbon official ans unofficial, etc). True updated builds have been slowing down, but Lollipop is around the corner and surely if I was a dev I wouldn't be investing long hours on roms that will be soon forgotten once lollipop is out. Would you?
Not sure what your talking about, the moto G has dozens of roms getting active updates. instead of complaining about a few roms that we don't have or that are outdated we should appreciate all the roms we can choose from right now. there are phones that dont even have official CM builds let alone several other big roms like PAC, Paranoid, Slimkat etc.. and we get all of them

Lack of development

I have noticed there isn't a lot of development for our phone. Is the reason for this there is not a lot of devs interested in this phone, or are they all just waiting for MM to come out?
Don't get me wrong, I am thankful for the devs we do have, I guess I am just used to a larger selection of roms/kernels/apps.
I can't really say there is a lack of development per se. But then again I am coming from a g920a and the xda forums for that device are like a bad joke. But seriously we have Marshmallow already thanks to hackers; also a CM development thread and a debloated stock rom. We have a few kernels and I think development will hopefully heat up even further when stock marshmallow becomes official and also official CM support comes around, seeing as the majority of custom roms have at least some part of CM in them these days. I for one really hope a version of AOSPA gets released for this device eventually but then that will probably take a while as they haven't even started to work on MM yet it looks like. But really this phone is already amazing. I am running Marshmallow and doze along with amplify has dramatically improved the only problem I was having; the battery. I left my phone over night for a bit over 10 hours last night and it only lost 1%! And that was with WIFI bluetooth and location still running. I freaking love this phone, and I am confident that the development activity is still young and just getting started.
I'd imagine it'll pick up a decent amount more once we get MM. I doubt you'd see anything new before then...not really much of a point to spend a lot of time on anything just to start over in a week or two.

I agree with your concern, however, I know once mm comes it will pick up. The 6p being released didn't help things I'm sure. This is a great bootloader unlockable phone and I am along for the ride whatever it entails. That 6p isn't enough to make me jump yet. Still I keep checking stock in case I change my mind. Lol
I agree about this phone being amazing. I guess I am used to seeing my roms and kernels since I am coming from a nexus 6. I have no doubt there will be more development once MM drops.
Coming from one plus one, development is super slow with MXP. Pretty much all phones I've owned had decent development. All the Samsung devices has more development than MXP. I'm optimistic something great will come out in the future. Just surprised we don't have more developer's on this device.

I agree, I thought there would be a little more dev, but I am happy with the phone and with the devs we do have. They all do great work.
Well. I already have working versions of CM-based ROMs such as LiquidSmooth. But, MM is what I am waiting for to release them. Plus, the AOSP source tree does not support building for MSM8992 platforms by default i.e. without additional patching for LP. But with MM that is fixed. Once, the blobs for MM are out (for XT1575), development should pick up pace with respect to AOSP-based ROMs as well.

How is oneplus's trackrecord when it comes to updates and dev?

Not sure where to ask so I thought this would be the best place.
I'm waiting to decide what will be my next phone and oneplus 3 is one of my top 2 choices but before I wanted to know your opinion on something.
What kind of track record does oneplus have when it comes to system update? I mean are they slow like Samsung, fast like google nexus or....
Also dev community seems to be pretty good one oneplus phone. Am I right?
Or any other info that will help me. I'm not new to the rooting and unlocking world but really don't know much about oneplus.
Thanks in advance.
Official updates from the company s*cks.
But XDA devs solve it by making custom updates/roms.
So my advice is wait for +3 because the only oneplus device which gets/got the most attention for updates and custom work was +1
Thank you

i dont think the 3 will be any different. source code was available for the one because cyanogen are very GPL complaint, right now development is at stand still because oneplus aren't giving any sources for marshmallow
This is a tricky topic to give you an answer for because so many of us have biased opinions.
I've been developing for Android since day one(2008) and have seen/used it all. True "Open Source" developers tend to deliver solutions faster than most OEMs will or ever will. OnePlus does have very good Tech-Support considering you really need it or ever will use it.
On the terms of updates; OnePlus has been sluggish (as most OEMs are) at delivering updates in a timely fashion. Reason being is that OEMs are constrained to delivering an almost 100% "bug free" release on most/all software. A lot of R/D and testing is required before an "Official" update will be released and even then its rolled out in batches.
This is just my "2 Cents Worth" so take it in the context it was intended. I personally have enjoyed my experience with OnePlus over all other OEMs that I've used thus far.
Keep in mind that the support and experience you will receive from other developers and users here on XDA should keep you updated and happy.

No Android P beta for Oneplus 5t, the existing flagship of OnePlus

For the first time Google, Android P's latest beta will be available on non pixel / Nexus devices including OnePlus 6, Essential PH-1, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Sony Xperia XZ2, Nokia 7 Plus, Oppo R15 Pro, and Vivo X21.
I immediately jumped to get my 5T signed up, only to face disappointment.
Android P beta for OnePlus 5t was skipped and the same was available only for yet to launch OnePlus 6.
Lately I have got a feeling that OnePlus has shifted their interest from consumer focused company to buiness oriented company who are more concerned about thier new flagship and less concerned about thier previous users.
The unofficial treble support was provided to our device by the hardworking developers of OnePlus community but OnePlus did not make any efforts to provide the same.
The OnePlus community should send a strong message to the company that they should not make the old coustmers feel left out.
We should pass following message to OnePlus:-
a) Providing official treble support to 5 and 5t.
b) Providing the lastest Android version along with their new flagship phones.( Which will be possible if support for project treble is available).
c) Providing all the exlusive upcoming features to previous generation phones (5 & 5t) till the time hardware permits.
A) That is not going to happen. But Mokee ported Treble so hopefully an P Beta port will come to 5T at some point.
C) This is OnePlus we're talking about, I doubt they will.
I really don't think they care about the community anymore.
I thought OnePlus had quietly prepared the 5T for Treble by creating an empty Vendor partition in the background? It's not formatted yet, and OOS doesn't see it, but it's there?
I'm unhappy too, that they didn't use the 5T for their P beta, but if they provided the official base for Treble, then maybe we'll still see something from them or at least it will be easier for the XDA Devs...

A) If we push.. all of us.. we might stand a chance.
C) Exactly
As I commented in the news.
Quote Google: "beta available TODAY from those OEMs".
The "today" tricked me into thinking that this would be my beloved 5t but Oneplus let Google speak about an even unannounced device just to get in that damn presentation.
In other words: Oneplus doesn't even care about their existing flagship the moment they know the rough release date for their next one. This is beyond everything I have ever seen in the smartphone business. At the same time advertising heavily the OP5t on Amazon to get one of the last ones.
Oneplus was never a community focused company they just said it so often that the people thought it would be so.
HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!
As far as I can see this whole Situation; we will get a taste of Android P anyway. Either officially or non official.
Official: because there in fact is an unused Partition (unformatted)
Unofficial: because hobby dev peeps around the globe were able to make the oneplus 5t Support treble.. therefore custom Rom creators should be able to create Android P roms for it.
Are y'all really surprised that we wouldn't get a P beta? Lol

Yes I'm in. Let's make a petition on change.org ?
Many people said of the oneplus 5t, it's the best against essencial phone... Better software, updates, design... But Essencial phone 1 have the beta xD
Now who is the best ??
I have a 5t
Android P require treble ?
I know this won't go down well, but did none of you do your homework on OnePlus before buying the 5t? OnePlus launch a new, replacement device every six months and concentrate on marketing and selling that; Every six months our new (to us) device gets moved to the back burner.
This is not a new strategy, and should not come as a surprise! Google how OnePlus 2 owners felt! I owned a 3t that was virtually obsolete four months later!
And every time this happens - every six months when a new device is launched - there is a thread on XDA to petition OnePlus about the unfairness of it all!
If this news is a surprise to anyone you should've been more aware of how the company operates.
Rant over.
Really dont't care for stock android p beta.
Much prefer for oxygen beta program with android P
Stock android is very poor and lack customization and feature option that oxygen offer.
If i want stock android experiance better solution is AOSP custom rom with plenty of feature and customization insteed of totaly naked stock android by Google IMO.
So we get OOS beta based on P later. (OP6 get first.)
I'm guessing we're still getting Treble support. There already is a /vendor partition created in one of the Beta updates iirc and they said: "Something exciting for you OnePlus 5/5T owners later this summer". So i'm guessing they're referring to Treble support.

Later this year and later this summer are different my friend.
Later this year means December and not before that.. but OnePlus 6 will get it immediately on launch..
Essential phone has got it already.. y not us is the question

Yh one does not always remember the exact words. P requires Treble we do not have Treble hence why we don't get it yet. If you really want it install MoKee ROM which enables Treble and wait for an Android P GSI.
Everyone should stop acting like treble is a hardware based thing.
The only reasons we did not get the beta is that Oneplus 1. is too lazy to deliver 2. wants to boost OP6 sales.
Treble is something completely software based and can be added at any given time (even without bricking the device).
I think the real reason we are complaining is (like the title says) that Oneplus is announcing stuff for a device that isn't even on sale yet.
It's like Google would have said "...and of course Pixel 3 is getting the beta from day one. We are already testing it internally and it is working great. In the meantime we are all very happy that you bought Pixel 2".
Not surprising from OnePlus. Unfortunately, they only seem to be concerned with what's the best way to make more money even if it involves abandoning their current users. This move, like all the moves they make, is about money. Doesn't matter if they ignore their current flagship device or users. Sad but true.

OP6T Custom Rom

Got to give it some time. My 5T sat in the box unused for a few months because no custom roms were available. Heck the 6 still doesn't even have official Lineage support.
That being said development support is the only reason I buy OnePlus.
People please understand that custom ROM development is dead!!! sure you can bootloader unlock install TWRP and mods but development will never amount to much compared to the hay days of XDA. ..it's over

The devs are tired of Oneplus. The times are over at Oneplus. At 6 there is hardly anything and that after months. The 6t will get worse.

I hope not. I switched to the 5T after Google dropped ended the Nexus line. Just picked up the 6T hoping devlopement would pick up like it did for the 5T. If development ends up going nowhere this will be my last OnePlus device and I go back to my hard and fast rule of not purchasing any device without Lineage support. No more hoping for it down the road.
My next Phone is a Pixel. I will sell my 6t and buy the Pixel 3 XL. Better Dev support, faster update and better Camera.

From what I've seen Pixels get very little development support until they are pretty old. The Pixel 3 doesn't have very much development either at the moment.

What sort of development are you guys looking for?
One+ 6T is "almost" stock android.
I came from an S8 where I was dev for the following ROM: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/development/rom-googlewiz-oreo-extreme-debloat-t3750641
It took me just a few hours to have the same ROM on the 6T, including debloating some of the One+ software which is IMHO pretty useless.
So now my One+ 6T looks and feels like a Pixel.
I can try to make a flashable rom for 6T out of it but I need to study a bit ... I did most of steps manually so I don't have a flashable zip.
Let me know if there would be interest in that.

I am most definitely interested, however, I have the TMobile variant. Is there a possibility of unlocking and rooting in the future without TMobile unlocking for me?
Custom ROM development definitely isn't what it used to be, however we'll see a few in the coming months. Anyone know if DU is supporting the 6t? I'm not following them on G+ anymore since they weren't supporting my last device.

Yes. All phones launching with Oreo & above will have treble support.
Seeing as we now have a more than serviceable TWRP that can decrypt and a growing customer base of one plus users on the 6T, I would venture to guess development will be ramping up very soon.

Yep I owned a Pixel XL and OnePlus 3 at the same time almost nothing going on in the pixel section but the OP3 section was thriving plenty of development going on.
There was a time that custom roms were so much better than stock roms, but nowadays many stock roms are better. They tend to be better with cameras rather than the generic cam that comes with a custom rom, they tend to also have better battery life as the rom is usually optimized for that specific device. There are many other things. About the only reason to root nowadays is to get rid of bloat and certain system files, as well as, modding your device with various mods like majisk and substratum. So I wouldn't expect a lot in the way of custom rom development. Gone are the days of Nexus and Note 4 development. Those days were a flashaholics dream!
