accidentally found dpi change on stock 7.0 rom - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have been having issues with apps, crashing, compatibility and seems to revolve around the text size inside display options. But having poked into developer options I have got something that gives me the cool custom ROM DPI change. Ok so here it is.
Go developer options.
Smallest width, will be 411 change to 510.
Images here so you can see the change.
I'm going to use 510 for a while. I know there's an option in display where you can change text size, but turns out it makes some of the apps I use just crash out when i launch. This however allows me to have both

I've been using 484 with no problem.

[Q] Smaller font (Working?)

Okay, great device... but really annoying that most apps don't make use of the extra real estate on the screen. Most apps are just blown up versions of for example the Galaxy S2 apps. Meaning most apps are the same but 5.3/4.2 = 1.26 times bigger That's at least a pity The contacts app displays the same amount of contacts on a screen as the Galaxy S2 or S but... with a 1.26 x bigger font (compared to the S2) and 5.3/4=1.33 (lol) x bigger font compared to the Galaxy S
Fortunately there seems to be a setting in the accessibility settings that allows the user to decrease the font in some stock apps. Unfortunately this doesn't work. At least not on my device. Anyone got this working?
And yes, ICS would be a great improvement for such a big screen device.
Is that possible to set another density for the device (maybe you have to root it first)?

You'd have to root it first, and then push the density down. Not ideal, as some apps then run in a box on the screen, but it does make for smaller fonts, and you can cram more widgets on the screen etc.
I run my HD2 at 160, but then again I have had my eyes lasered!
Root
Go to system/build.prop
Open in editor
change the value of lcd from 240 to 192
See the difference.
U can always go back
All apps wont be scaled to the new lcd value.
eg: TW in sgsII does not scale.
However i always used this value and did not use TW.
Looks very interesting but I'm afraid that I'm not s pro

density change doesn't address the question
Hey ho wait..... this wasn't the question. So does the fontsize changing option work for you guys?

I think change the font size setting in gingerbread is for display text in text editor or web browser instead of the launcher and most other application as they have their own fixed font size. You cannot do anything to those applications as they has been programmed that way.

With stock apps I mean the Samsung apps. In the accessibility settings there's an option to change the font size "in the following applications: S planner, Email, Contacts and Messaging" (as stated in the accessibility settings)
Unfortunately this setting doesn't work on my jk4 rom. Maybe others have luck on other roms. Seems like a very usuable option for the note.

My lcd.density (or so) was set to 320 on stock!
I changed it to 280 and the system looks now nicer!
Actually, I measured the tab and my calculation would be around 270-280 dpi.
Has anybody other/better data?
By the way, 1st problem after changing lcd density is in S Memo! Background seem to have a fixed 'smaller size' which are then placed wrongly
Another impact: The email-widget does not fit on screen any more (using Launcher Pro) ... Hope in ICS they will fix some of those screen size problems!

I didn't try it myself yet but I bet it will give a whole lot of trouble with almost every Samsung app on this xhdpi device. Like HTC, they exactly target the screen for which they write software. Unlike most android apps in the market, targeting screens with different specs isn't important. Scaling isn't a requirement for these stock apps. ICS will not solve the problem, because it is still up to the developer which screens will be targeted.
Anyway, back to the original question, I think it is safe to conclude that the font setting doesn't work for anyone. So it is a bug.
I have rooted my phone and tried to use Spare Parts to change the font size to Extremely Small. It works instantly and make the application much more usable. But, there is a problem: The font size will change back to Normal after few hours by itself. Anyone has the same problem?

that method also won't scale down graphics to match the smaller fonts. LCD Density Changer accomplishes that and works well.

How to change the DPI (no root)

I'm not sure how widely known this is, but it's possible to change the DPI of your new phone if (like me) you find that everything is too big. It's super easy too.
1. Go to About Phone > Software Info and tap the Build number 7ish times to unlock the developer options menu.
2. Back out to settings, enter the Developer options menu now at the bottom of the list.
3. Scroll down until you find the Minimum width setting in the Drawing section about 3/4 of the way down. It's set to 411dp by default on the S8+.
4. Change it to whatever you prefer! Higher number = everything gets smaller, Lower number = everything gets bigger.
Enjoy your extra space!
Awesome.. one problem.. keyboard looks wierd after changing width
If the keyboard looks weird.. Go up on DPI because its breaking up the design.
Im at 460 on highest resolution. And its not breaking that.

Is your AOD centered (if you have it enabled)? I set my S8 to 420 and the AOD was slightly skewed to the right. Tried pushing it down to 411, which I guess is default on the S8+ and it re-centered the AOD. I'm assuming there are various 'accepted' DPI settings that won't break the layout; I think somebody listed them for the Pixel on Reddit, but I can't find a similar listing for the S8. Any ideas?

I also noticed it not being centered after changing the DPI, and what's worse after setting it back to 411 it's still not centered
I'm at 480 and it's great. My aod is centered, but isn't it supposed to move a little very slowly to prevent burn in?

Indeed, feels like something I should have remembered. Thanks for pointing that out.
I am at 576.
Aod is centered but obviously small.
I use SwiftKey for keyboard and Nova launcher. Hence do not see any other issues
Increased font size and bold font so that I can read stuff better. I

449 for me. Been using it since S7e lollipop Beta. No issues I also use nova
500 here w/ all apps full-screen, bold font just a shade above tiny. So glad this is able to be done w/o root, along w/ multi window for any app!
Any recommendations for a bigger option xd... tried 351 but doesn't seems great.. 411 is too small for me
600 turns on tablet mode, and things are working well. Two issues I've noticed so far:
* The battery icon in AoD doesn't render correctly
* "About Phone -> Status" page causes com.android.phone FC - doesn't seem to have any ill effects besides not being able to open that page. Need to go 599 or lower to get it to open again.
480 is a good one

Hey, can you elaborate on the multi-window? I haven't messed around with mine that much yet, and I haven't seen anything mentioned anywhere else.
I remember doing this on the Note 7 I think and I remember that though I liked it, I wanted to go back, so when I set it back to the DPI that it was before, it didnt actually restore everything to the way it was. I noticed someone on here mentioned they set it back to 411 and that did NOT bring things back to stock. Can anyone else confirm?
Im on the s8+ and I love smaller icons/txt so I'd like a higher DPI, but scared that if I dont like it, I will not be able to get everything back to stock without restoring the phone, which I really dont want to do lol.
Also, what is AoD?
I use Nova, so not sure what it stands for.

I haven't noticed anything that doesn't change back. If there are certain font sizes etc that don't change back, I would suspect a reboot would fix that, but I can't tell you for sure. AoD is 'Always on Display', the clock/date/battery/etc display that comes up on the screen when the screen is "off".

Sure thing!
Settings>Advanced Features>Multiwindow: Enable both
Developer options>Force activities to be resizable: Enable
Once you've done that, hold your recents button to use multi-window whenever you'd like. I tend to use the feature for most of my daily work, and in my opinion is the most useful native addition in years.
I should mention as well, enabling "screen pinning" (Settings>Lock Screen and Security>Other Security Settings>Pin Windows) and using it when still wanting to keep another app full screen is very beneficial! Once enabled, you can access the feature w/ the recents button as well. Just hold down on the app.

Any chance that someone can change the DPI to something and then back to stock (411) and see if everything (keyboard, AoD, etc) return back to stock too.

What I meant was, they do return back but I can't tell you definitively that every single setting is identical.

changing width dpi screen size

Hi all,
So I've been playing around with dpi and I saw it was set to 279 or 320 as default (I forgot). I changed it to 400 or 411 and wow what a difference, now I can make more use of the screen when browsing etc. Try it out for yourself and let me know your sweet spot for dpi.
Settings > build number (click several times) >go back > developer option > scroll down to display width and change the dpi from 279 as default to 400 or 411 or you can go higher or lower depending on your preference.
Hope I've made some sense!
Here is the difference if you wanted to compare me loading up gsmarena.com
Never knew about this option. Thank you
And for the ones who can't find it, it's under "Drawing" category, and it's named "Smallest width".
Mine was at 423 already... I put the dpi slider to the left when I first got the phone

Sames
Just got mines this morning.
I have the dpi set to 410 for the time being and will try 423 later.
Thanks for the recommendations, the stock setting was ridiculous.

Their getting different settings because they've changed the scree text size.
Settings > display > font size
300 dpi here... never been happier.
No need to go to developers option
It's easy to change it
Setting > Display > Display Size
( there are 3 options )
Does anyone have an issue where the navigation buttons mess up in landscape mode? I'm at 540 (actually set DPI through ADB but this is similar).
If you set the DPI to 480 or higher then it switches to small tablet mode, this causes the nav buttons to go a bit messed up in landscape

You can also change the display size from setting > Display > display size

"Display Size" stopped working

There is a display setting for "Display Size" with a slider. It's not labeled, but there are 3 settings, small, medium, and large. It changes the size of the icons and icon text. I've had it set at large for a long time, but a few days ago the icons and icon text got smaller. The slider is still all the way to the right, but the size displayed is "medium". I've moved the slider back and forth, and reset the phone, but I still can't get the larger size to display now. The "large" setting shows the same size as "medium". "Small" does make them smaller, though.
Any ideas?
Are you rooted? If so you may have installed something that set the DPI in default.prop. If the DPI is anything other than the default value, the slider doesn't work.
No, not rooted. I did enable developer mode recently, but I'm not sure if that was before or after the problem started. Turning off developer mode didn't help.
What model V20 do you have? Some models have the ability to do finer DPI adjustments in developer mode, so just enabling it may have done it. You need to re-enable it, and scroll through to look for something about scaling.

It's LG-H910. AT&T. I looked through the Developer settings and didn't see anything related to dpi, but thanks for the suggestion.

Have You Changed Smallest Width In Developer Options?

I have mine set to 525 dp. I prefer having really small icons and text. Most of all I like forcing the tabbed UI in Firefox. I haven't noticed any real disadvantages.
I am curious to know what settings you all use besides the default one.
Yes. Using 702 dp
Is there a standard set of sizes that can be used that don't cause any display abnormalities? I see 525 and 702 and that I'm running 454 as per smallest OOS visibility setting. These seem like random setting but I'm sure they aren't.

600 seems to be the point where it reads as a tablet, as Chrome starts to have tabs at that setting. There are some other settings the device doesn't seem to like and will jump to the next highest number it likes. Example: setting it to 598, will automatically make it set to 600. Did not notice any abnormalities other than icon placement, which can be adjusted.
I messed with it the other day and my launcher wasn't changing. Anyone else have that issue?

Spotify calls my 6T as tablet even in smallest delault size. So I guess evvery app has their own definition of when a mobile becomes tablet.

I always used to set my phones to tablet mode, but at the moment it seems to break Google lens so I've had to set it just below. I don't really like the full width notification shade and lockscreen notifications, and miss chrome tabs.
Also, how does it affect the status bar \ notch?
it's dpi and screen ratio the wm command is easy way or get app that changes it
I use 600 in developer settings, font smallest, and screen smallest... I still have the original swype apk and prefer the 'tablet' version of the keyboard. This, and the fact i have a lot more 'real estate' are the primary reasons I set it to 'phablet' mode.
i mistakenly increased it to 600 and my device isnt working
I have changed it to 1200 and now pocof1 cannot load anything. Is there a fix to this?
hi can someone help me I recently changed mine by accident and i put it to 200 and now my tablet is on black screen if i hold the power button i can see the options to power off restart and lock it , i restarted it multiple time and power it off and on multiple times too . can someone help me
