Benefits and drawbacks to the 935u software? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answers

Updated 12 September 2016
------------------------------------
Alright, I know there has been a lot of conversation about loading the 935u package and rooting, but what are the benefits and drawbacks to using it stock?
Does volte work?
VVM?
WIFI calling?
How's battery life?
Thanks for the feedback!
----------------------------------------
Edit: 08 Sep 2016
Alright, I took the plunge, and the phone is faster, but be aware if you are coming from Verizon you will lose a few things if you do not root.
Here's what you lose:
- Verizon VVM
- WiFi Calling
- FM Radio (If you had the September Update)
- Builtin Video Calling (Verizon to Verizon)
- Message+ Integration with Edge and Gear S2
- All the other Verizon bloat (this is a good thing)
What you gain:
- DPI scaling is now a regular setting (no additional app needed)
- Identify numbers using builtin service
- Faster Updates
- Faster Phone
I'll update soon with battery comparisons. I'll miss the WiFi calling, but that's it.

Volte/wifi calling is excellent. I'm on pg9. No vvm and no cares. Battery is excellent. Stock that is.

The U Firmware works better than the Verizon firmware in the regards that it gets rid of all the Verizon bloat, turd-ware, spyware, etc. Additionally, you will continue to get OTAs (assuming you dont flash the eng boot). The big difference is that you will get OTAs for the Samsung (U) variant rather than the Verizon. This means that you will get updates much soon than if you were waiting on VZW to roll their firmwares, as they usually take no less than a month longer than everyone else to do their releases. As stated, only Visual Voicemail doesnt work, but you can root/flash that if you like to re-add it.

You can also download something like Google Voice or something if you need Visual voicemail

Has anyone noticed a decrease in signal strength on the U firmware? Even a small one? That seems to be the only real drawback that other members of XDA have mentioned.

Is there a guide that tells how to set up VVM with Google Voice? I've Googled it and I see some guides dated back to 2010, but I see some steps have changed (or I'm just not getting it lol).

Neither in particular just the actual signal. Like download/upload speeds, and call quality, coverage in certain areas, Verizons Advanced LTE, etc.

No issues here, when I first installed looking at the status bar it seemed a little weaker. But you can never go by that, speeds seem to be faster imo but I never tested them to be sure.

I've added this above, but just to add my experience.

Yes, Samsung Pay still works. That was a deal breaker for me if it didn't.

I flashed this yesterday after posting. It says I have anew update. Should I take it, or stay on the sames version the guide gets us to install? Also, since visual voice-mail no longer works are there any alternatives that work just as good?

I tend to lean towards Google voice, but Google voice is more than just voice-mail. I use Google voice as a central contact number instead of my cell, it runs my phone, my watch if I'm remote, and my office line.

I know that we lose VVM, but just to be clear, with this unlocked software we lose WiFi calling as well?

Trying to delete wifi calling?

What's up XDA,
Trying to delete Wi-Fi calling from my wife's T-Mobile Galaxy Note 3. But, I can't seem to get it all.
Here is what I've done so far:
1. Rooted
2. Installed Titanium Backup
3. Blew away all T-Mobile junk apps
However wifi calling is labeled differently somehow than on previous devices. Because I know longer see an option for it but when I activate wifi it comes on???
Does anyone know the exact things to delete to totally remove wifi calling?

I don't know how to get rid of it, but please tell me why you want to.
Even if you don't want to use it now there's a good chance you'll need it later.
I work in Atlanta and in many office buildings the T-Mobile cell signal is horrible. I suppose it's something to do with the metal frames.
I also get little or no signal in some businesses with metal roofs, like Lowes, Home Depot, and soon. When I go to that sort of place I can often still get & pace calls because of the WiFi calling.

[AT&T] 4.4.2 Update CHANGES

I'm starting this thread because the official update thread has become more of a "I can't update" and "this is how you get around that problem" than about the result of the update... which is not only fine but important. But I think it's just as important we discuss whatever changes are taking place in the new update once it successfully installs.
This thread is strictly for AT&T, and I encourage others to start one for other carriers as the bloatware and other crap will differ.
What I know:
- OTA Kit Kat update began rolling out on March 26th with the majority of updates available in the evening and then mass-available the following day (I updated on the 27th).
- If you have not rooted your phone, most people should have no problems with the OTA. If you are experiencing issues, go to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51457419
- Once the update is complete, a number of people (or everyone?) have reported (including myself) that touch does not work on boot. You can take out the S-pen, navigate as needed, and tell the phone to reboot. Once rebooted again, touch should be restored (verified on multiple reports).
- New, faster boot time.
- More responsive menus and motion.
- Revised status icons from the "colorful" Jelly Bean look to the monochromatic grey.
- Reports of hotspot being disabled (which means AT&T lied IMO when they sold me on the "hot spot is free now" line).
- Google Wallet does not allow click to pay (someone else will need to elaborate since I have never used Wallet)
- There is presently no root for the OTA version of KK (that I know of)
Please add to this, evaluate what bloatware remains, or was added, what works still, what doesn't that used to work on JB, and so on.
Also, someone with an S-view case please let us know if the S-view window functionality still works.

That's ok, I stated that a number of people did, not everyone. Not sure why. It could be due to whatever software was previously installed. But for those that have the issue, there's the fix.
I wil be honest, I have an unofficial S-view cover. But I just yesterday got my otterbox and struggled to get it on, dust-free. *sigh*.... .I will do my duty now and remove it from the otterbox and reinstall the generic S-view cover. FWIW it LOOKS official... has "Galaxy Note 3" in the official logo style on the bottom and "Samsung" on the back, embossed into the vinyl. Cost me 9 bux shipped. Worked fine before, absolutely nothing wrong with it whatsoever.

Got the Note 3 a month ago andI was very dissapointed that the Note 3 GPS voice was much worse that the Note 1. With the KK OTA upgrade, the GPS voice was changed and sounds better (although I think they put too much base/low tones in it).

Thats because it's the Samsung voice you're hearing, not the standard Android "voice". You can change this in Settings to the stock Android voice.

same here don't trust the announcement anymore and planning now to move to windows phone and getting nokia lumia 1520
I haven't updated (I won't give up Safestrap), but from what I've seen, almost all the "improvements" have been done to 4.3 by the devs here. I have a PIN coded lock screen - with a camera. My GPS works except when I turn out of the development. (In the entire city, and on 75 mile trips, that's the only place it glitches, and it recovers in about 3 seconds) ... The only real "improvements I see are a little bit more RAM, a little faster (faster than X-Note on 4.3?) and default text app (but since I run the Kit Kat app, and there's nothing else installed, that's a big yawn to me).
AFAIC, this isn't 4.4.2, it's 4.3.1, with a few things broken from what you guys are saying. It's a minor point upgrade, nothing like what I think most of us were anticipating all fall.
Can't side load any apps. The install button doesn't work.

New Update August 10th - Stagefright Patch

http://www.androidcentral.com/alcatel-onetouch-idol-3-get-stagefright-fix-beginning-august-10
Seems the Idol 3 is receiving the Stagefright patch! I'm surprised Alcatel is actually keeping up with this phone and releasing needed updates. Now if only we could get Android 5.1 or even Android M.
For those who have rooted, I'm sure you will have to un-root in order to get this via OTA or follow famewolf's thread here.
Cool 5.1.1 would be nice as well

There are 3 different 6045i firmwares in the stock image thread. You could have backed up one at a time till you got one that worked with google voice and didn't have other issues.
But wouldn't that negate the positive results of the most recent update (improved DTTW, etc.)?

Depends on your priorities...I for one have no problem using hangout dialer for the calls I want to make over data which still works fine.
if they could fix the lags too
i was wondering, if we can't get ota update is it still possible to use the file update while being rooted?
hope this don't cause lags.. had the opposite result the last time I've updated..it was a mess
Well, I also use Hangouts Dialer and agree it's not a huge imposition. Still, no other handset I've ever used has had this bug, and I'd like the option of using the native dialer with GV. Regards from New Orleans...A.

Off topic. But how do you like or compare to the blu life one 2015?
I like the Blu Life One LTE quite a bit. Bought it for $99 off Amazon during a pre-order promotion, and have been using out to compare various carriers alongside my Idol 3. Considering that it has only 1 gig of RAM, it's remarkably smooth. Very bright 720p display, good battery life. A paltry 8g of onboard storage, but I'm an app minimalist, and it does take an optional SD card. Dual SIM capability which has come in handy, though you must choose between SD card or SIM 2.
The Idol 3 is considerably more powerful (600-class Snapdragon versus 400; 2 gigs of RAM, bigger, full HD display, etc.). Covers more LTE bands, including Band 12, which is important for T-Mobile users like myself. Substantially better speakers.
I'm somewhat of a phone hobbyist, and have been playing with a number of inexpensive handsets lately (these two and a Lumia 640 -- amazing phone for $100 or less). I've gained new respect for this class of handset. See little or no need to pay flagship prices. But I don't game, so don't tax a CPU as some other users might.
I've been using an HTC One M7 on Verizon, but an going to move to T-Mobile. Coverage is solid here in New Orleans, and for my family (four of us) it's vastly less expensive, with vastly more data.

Hi All --
Wanted to let you guys know a new software update for IDOL 3 users will be released on or around August 10. This update will initially be available to IDOL 3 customers in the U.S. and will address fixes for Google Voice and SMS time stamp issues experienced by some users, as well as a Google security patch for the Stagefright vulnerability. For IDOL 3 customers in Canada, we are working with our carrier partners and hope to have an availability update for this very shortly.

I plan to give it a try and if it works I'll TRY to capture the 6045i update url as I did the previous updates..(I use a transparent squid proxy that all devices in my house go through to get to the internet. It allows me to intercept the url)..if I can get the update.zip downloaded I will make it available and perhaps some users will be able to sideload the update with less hassle.

That would be awesome. I'm in Canada and don't want to have to wait for my carrier to 'Ok' an update for a major security issue like this.
If that could be done for 6045k since I saw one user on this forum from Portugal with K model and 01003 update..
Meaning the update is pushed different from region to region..

Once someone who is un-rooted receives notification of this update, would you please post here letting us know the update has started to roll out? I don't think rooted users will get a notification of the update since we can't even check for one without getting a notification of being rooted.

Pretty sure you will still be able to re-root.
I can confirm that using the Full Unroot method via SuperSU works on this phone. I just ran it out of curiosity and followed the steps and SuperSU is gone from the app drawer and I am able to check for updates. See screenshots:

I definitely think that is the update that's gonna prevent samFail root method and being able to roll back to previous fw. Thank God I'm already rooted and can't take that update. Hopefully someone will figure out a way to pull the Calling Plus feature from this update so we can take advantage of the VoLTE.

To be honest since I switched from HTC to the Note series I haven't missed rooting and flashing much. I use package disable pro to disable apps and now use Disconnect Pro to block ads.
I'm happy to have simultaneous call and data back. Just used it and it worked as advertised! One thing I noticed is the calls did not connect as HD voice calls.

Well i have found a weird issue, and i don't believe it was there before the update. Microsoft Word will not open(crashes instantly) same for Excel, and MS apps. Then i notice my icons frame option is greyed out and i haven't a clue.
I have the unlocked note 8 with the Sprint firmware flashed to it and I got the update yesterday. I did not notice any bloatware being added after flashing. But I did get wifi calling and now have calling plus after the update.
Root and calling plus working for me have to move a few files around but it works

Verizon wear24 any way to unlock for use with other carrier?

I just picked up a Verizon Wear24 for cheap. I'm a Project Fi user and would like to get rid of the verizon crap on the watch and link it more completely to my phone. I'm new to Android Wear but not to android. Is there a way to unlock AW and flash a more stock ROM?

The SIM actually comes out in this if you take it apart enough. You can replace with any SIM of your choosing. The real problem is that the phone is limited on bands as it is just LTE band 13. Let's say you succeeded in adding bands, you would still have an issue entering APN settings as this menu is restricted.
Without root you cannot add any bands. i did this with my tmobile lg g3 back in the day. while complicated it did work.
Has anyone rooted this watch?
Adding bands to qualcomm you must patch rmt-storage or any modifications to the bands will revert
then you have to enable APN menu as adding new APN is disabled on this firmware.
Since this watch was available at $80, a lot of people jump in to get one. Hopefully with time we get more developers to be involve. I'm looking to replace the bands. As of now I don't care about LATE. But I wish we can enable NFC for Android pay

Same here, working android pay would be great!
Would be nice to have separate forum for this model
Ordered mine for $80 and received it today. It would be nice to see the developers work some magic on this thing. Don't like the fact its stuck on Verizon and all the Verizon bloat on it. I can live without LTE but would love to see the Verizon SMS app and stuff go.

For now you can just disable the Message+ app in System apps. Also disable the cellular radio.
Interesting approach, wonder if you can still send and receive texts with Message+ disabled?

That's great news. Can't wait to try.
This is one of the common review cons for the Wear24. Would be awesome if it was that easy [emoji16]

Yeah, folks should probably use it for some time before posting review.
Too bad we won't see any updates but for $75 this watch is great buy.

I have Sprint. Will I be able to receive calls via Bluetooth (speaker phone)? I have been told different things. Also will texting work like normal (voice response)without the Verizon text app? Will it work like another watch that isn't carrier specific?

That's freaking awesome news thanks. I've been told by bunch of people that it won't work at all unless you have Verizon however it doesn't make sense because it's Android Wear watch

Check if your BT profile is set to phone audio.
Or reset the watch and start over

Bt is phone audio. I'll do a reset see if that helps. Hope so because it is a nice watch. Maybe we will get stock wear it soon and have the full potential unlocked.
Tried the reset but no change. Everything seems to work except the mic. Google assist also does not work for texting with ok google. Watch is solid tho.
