VPN on 7.0 - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since updated to android N i was unable to connect to the VPN, trying to use as many apps but no use
They connect to the vpn network and after a millisecond it is being disconnected.
Apps:
Opera max
Opera vpn
Hotspot sheild
Tunnel bear
Cloud vpn
Pisiphone
OVPN - tells me that the tun.ko is not loaded, the funny part is that droid vpn is blocked too...
Well this country blocks all Voip apps and so
Please if anyone is reporting this issue? I think those apps still not updated to be compatible with the Nougat version

Uninstall opera max (and reinstall if need be) happened to me before on 6.0
Causes VPN to disconnect after a while.

VPN Constant Disconnects

My Xoom usually disconnects the VPN immediately after opening any file from an SMB Share using ES File Explorer. I preferred Astro but the SMB addon doesn't work with Honeycomb yet. A variation of different vpn clients all do the same, as soon as data is done being transferred from a single download, the VPN will disconnect.
Is there a workaround for this? It would be great to only have the VPN connect when resources on the network were accessed or written.
I haven't found a workaround or solution to keep the VPN up and stable.
(btw, this is a typical MS 2008 PPTP on a Windows Domain)
At the moment, I'm having to reconnect after every file transfer- again, the wireless network doesn't seem to make a difference (although the 3g connection is obviously poor)
I've done a little troubleshooting on this in the last few days using the magic of wireshark. MS PPTP Server, makes the connection and then drops after SMB traffic is attempted, as well any website will not load, and no email / communication will work.
I believe this fully involves a Default Gateway setting on the Xoom, being it's a client-side setting and the Xoom doesn't appear allow that option to be changed (silly that it's missing, imo).
When I make a connection, Verizon's firewall policies see a foreign IP return traffic at some point on their network and blocks the transmission completely, eventually causing PPTP to timeout.
Here's a good read on how to get around the restriction:
http://jbenisek.wordpress.com/2010/10/05/android-2-1-and-2-2-vpn-pptp-over-verizon/
I myself have been on the phone this morning regarding this issue, I'm up to about a 3rd level of tech support and he is trying to tell me 'nothing is blocked at all on the Verizon network'...
I'm awaiting a call back now... at which I'll try to show him the above site/resource and maybe he'll move me to an unrestricted IP block. We bought 3 Xooms with the intention of working remotely in the field using PPTP- 4 more coming soon---
At this point, I'm still tempted to go back to Sprint and just wait on their Xoom release.
*btw, you can verify the above by tethering to the Xoom and changing your default gateway on a laptop/pc, the connection will work fine.

AH-HAH!

Apparently this is a known issue.
Encrypted PPTP is broken on Android: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4706
I've posted about this problem in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=992876
I've tried it on every version of Android since 2.1. I tried it with my Xoom on 3.0 and the problem remains. It appears to be a pretty low priority for Google.

Turned off encryption on the server and all was well. I can't believe google let that slide... !?
I guess I'll transition to a L2TP VPN...

[Q] N9002 built in VPN not working

Hi all, I got my N9002 from etotalk rooted and with their ROM (actually I am not sure what the advantages are of this). Anyway, it runs fairly stable with some gapps crashes (?) time to time.
The firmware is N9002ZNUBMI7.
Kies 3 tells me:
Current firmware version : PDA:MI7 / PHONE:MI7 / CSC:MI7 (CHU)
Latest firmware version : PDA:NA1 / PHONE:MJ6 / CSC:NA1 (CHU)
The issue I have is that the build in VPN is not working for me. I am keen to use the always-on VPN feature which third party VPN apps do not offer.
I have checked the router settings (bintec RS232BW) with the manufacturer's service hotline. Everything appears to be ok on the router. The router's log indicated that the tunnel was set up, the phone received an IP from the VPN IP pool but then failed to respond to the router's Dead Peer Detection (DPD) requests. The tunnel was closed then.
The manufacturer's service hotline also confirmed they do can set up VPN with another Android 4.3 phone using the same router settings. I am also able to set up VPN to my router with an Android NCP client on my N9002 - but it doesn't have always-on.
My question now: Do you know this issue? Is VPN working for you with the built in client? Can you recommend a fix for this?
I consider upgrading the firmware. Would this possibly help?
Thank you!

[Q] VPN issues

Hi
I am using a g900t with the AICP ROM 7.0 release and I am having some issues with VPN. I purchased VPN access from StrongVPN (If you know of a better provider please tell me who and why). I added my VPN credentials to the built VPN section of the ROM and it connects but randomly quits after awhile. I tried setting up the Always On VPN option but when it connects i have no internet access?
I am new to VPNs just trying to get something fast and reliable set up but feel i am stumbling around like a fool. Any help?

VPN Broken on 6.0.1?

Hi All,
Since I upgraded to 6.0.1 (stock) my VPN connection no longer works. Not using any app just the built in Android VPN to hide.me.
Used to work on 4.4.4 and 5.1.1.
Exactly the same settings on the same network on my Note 3 (4.4.2) work just fine.
Always the same 'unsuccessful' message on the Note 4 (SM-N910C) though.
PS I have done a factory reset, cleared the cache etc etc just in case but no joy.
Anyone come across this. Any solution or workaround?
Cheers,
MM
I think there was a problem with VPNs in Android 6.0 marshmallow. Don't know if it's been fixed though.
VPN is working fine on my phone with 6.0.1 MM. I use Betternet VPN.
I experienced a problem before with VPN when I installed the xposed module Force Immersive Mode. But after disabling this xposed module, my VPN worked fine again.
Well, I am totally unable to get a VPN running using the built in VPN client using L2TP/IPSEK PSK.
For the benefit of others who may have the same issue. I download OpenVPN for Android from the market and used a ovn (config) file from my VPN provider (hide.me) and it all just worked first time.
If you don't have an ovn file you can configure manually.
I am very surprised at Sammy letting it ship with broken VPN functionality. A lot of us need this to access work networks etc etc.
Mrmyagi did you ever find a fix for the built in VPN access? I use a tab4 for work and cannot get into my VPN anymore on marshmallow. Our IT department can't even figure out a workaround
I use tunnelbear on 6.0.1, and it works fine.

I would use a third party app only company doesn't allow installation of any apps off store. Might be able to install it with just apk though
FWIW I use the stock VPN facility to connect to the VPN facility of my Draytek router, and it works fine, so the stock facility isn't completely broken.

I use OpenVPN for Android (available on Play Store). Works for me and actually better (IMHO) than the built-in client.

Use android phone as a router and block certain dns/routing addresses (Google DNS)?

Hey guys I can't seem to find an answer to what I am trying to accomplish.
Firstly I have an android phone (Nexus 6 rooted) that I use with an app called VPN hotspot. This lets me connect all my devices to the rooted phone while using a vpn to bypass geo restrictions. This is great for the most part but alot of buffering happens (not always but still annoying)
I pay for my own DNS service (unlocator) and I use that to bypass geo restrictions via phone. Unfortunately you cannot do that with the Chromecast because Google hardcore's the DNS into the firmware. That means when I try to use a UK app while abroad the Chromecast checks it's location and the casting wont work. Blocking routing addresses (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) allows me to achieve what I want. Unfortunately I can't find an app or anything that would allow me to do that on my rooted phone.
I used to have a router (was stolen) that could block Google's DNS adding static routing addresses to it. I wanted to know can an app do that via phone before I go out and purchase a new router.
My ideal situation would be to use my rooted phone as a little wireless router, have an app block those addresses/DNS, run VPN hotspot app from here, connect my Chromecast and daily driver phone to the rooted phone and be able to cast like I did with the router. If anyone has any ideas or apps that work for this type of setup can you please let me know. I know I can go out and buy a new router but I see the potential in using my old phone as a router and thought maybe it is possible.
Thank you guys.
Got help via Reddit. It can be done.
