With a heavy heart, the time has come to say goodbye to my beloved Note 4 community. I still don't want to part ways with it, but it would help me offset a partial cost from the Note 7, so selling it on Swappa. I already bought the Note 7 and while I think it's a very good phone, it's still missing few things that would have made it a complete phone like the Note 4. Life goes on and have to move on. The Note 4 is my favorite phone ever, and has served me well for 2 years so that's the reason I am emotionally attached to it.
Thanks to all the kind Note 4 developers and users, you have made this a wonderful place to be for the past 2 years.
I love the note4. I have a note 7. I keep my note 4 as a back up, and a remote.
Let's hope your Note 7 doesn't go kaboom...
Note 4 all the way!
*poof* phone bursts into flames.. news at 11.
I just got mine about 3 weeks ago for just under $200 USD. I'm happy as heck with my purchase and will probably buy another one in a few years as long as the bootloader remains unlocked.
You guys realize that ALL Note 7(s) have been recalled right? Wouldnt it be easier if they had removable batteries?
Also you realize they are all BL locked right? MOre like time to say good by to custom roms and kernels. :S

What about the N930F (interational) or N930U (US SIM-unlocked)? Are the bootloaders locked on these variants, too?

N930U still has a locked bootloader.
N930F does not have a locked boot loader but cannot do VoLTE or Wifi calling. Also obviously Tmo will not cover the phone under the PHP protection etc.

Keep the Note 4.
7 is a bad decision both from design, marketing that ultimately affected buying decision.
Where's that 6gb ram they promised?
Why did Note 7 become a less edgy S7 Edge with no stylus? Where's that cutting edge technology we all enjoyed from Note 4? Where's that promise of premium $999 or $1,000 price point to separate us note users from the iphone and Galaxy S kids?
It all went downhill ever since the news of Sammy chairman banging prosties made headlines in South Korea.
These guys need to stop being cocky.
What's left in the market now? S7? crap... I'd rather hit the AAPL camp. Been a Note user since Note 2.
So many letdowns with 3, 5, now 7? How long do i have to wait for the next best thing? Im gonna buy another note 4 as spare unit to get me by the next few years.

Good choice,. I'm also thinking in OP3 but Blu products are raising my eyebrows. I recently bought a 60$ Blu R1HD in amazon and TBH that phone is rocking. I'm thinking in the Blu Pure XR - which is 100$ less than OP3.
I've been a Samsung fan but there are many options - and cheap ones - out there.

True true and true. But doesn't change the fact development is next to dead for the note 4. All the good developers moved on and we have never had any official Support from cm for their roms. And the people that compile them unofficially for us leave hella bugs unfixed which makes it a waste of time since you just switch back to tw 2 days later. Still thankful for them anyway but yea. Development is dead.

Don't know if this is an appopriate place for this discussion. Also, there are only roumors that we can't know if they are true or not. But by what I am reading I think I might like the new specs so much I will simply need to get it. I am not totally happy with Note 3 so the wait is a bit hard . Anyone else?

Me! I'm not a Note3 user, and I'm currently not so happy with my phone. When I looked at the leaked specs, I thought "this is paradise" and, well... [emoji16]
I need you guys' opinions on switching from a phone to a phablet. Can you kindly give me any?
:superhyped:
N9005 might be my last Samsung. We are nearly 10 months after launch and AOSP roms like CM have only just reached a more or less stable phase. I can only imagine Samsung will do anything it can to make AOSP development more difficult in the future.
For the moment I am fine just as my N3 is
Note 4 will see the struggle with Android 5 AND eventually (on some models, not all) with 64-bit Android 5 so I am in no big hurry to pay premium money for being basically a beta-tester.
But you can understand my position better if I say that my N9005 is still on rooted knox-0 stock 4.3 heavily optimized with xposed and similar stuff.
If I do upgrade it MIGHT be on Note 5, and only if there is no truly-open premium alternative.
Not sure yet...

I don't see how that's Samsung's problem. When we decide to root and flash different recoveries, kernels, ROMS and modems we know we are taking a risk of potentially messing up our phones. The fact that you are having that issue after doing all of those things is not Samsung's fault.
As for the Note 4, i'm probably going to go with the next version of the Galaxy Mega 6.3 if Samsung bumps up the specs a bit. I know they want to keep it as a mid-range device, but it has to be more useable than the current Galaxy Mega.
It's a shame reading that so many people ate unsatisfied with their phones.
Personally I absolutely love the Note 3. I have had it since it was released and it is absolutely perfect for me. There art many positive surprises. The screen in direct sunlight, battery life and how tough and water resistant it is. With my previous phones I was always discovering small problems. With the note I am constantly experiencing small advantages. It was the same story with the note 2.
If a new one will come out though I am not sure if I can resist buying it

Care to elaborate....
I would maybe wait for the Note 4 instead of buying it on release day.
If there was a bigger flagship phone from any other company I might decide to go for it.
Even though I haven't tripped KNOX and on the latest C-RoM, I might want to try something new later. Samsung is just doing the same thing over and over again. Samesung.
Not only Samsung every company is doing same thing. But note series is having more spices. And I am satisfied customer of note series. I am not a big fan of cm or mui because I love pen and camera feature. And my note 3 is fast and better than any other phone..

You really need to know what to buy ? Well ain't that cute.
There are 50 million reviews on the Web of all the newer phones and you still want an opinion.
And now you'll decide on 2 opinions which you will get here, if. Interesting.

I don't know why did you pick this Note 3 forum to ask your question, I guess we shall believe that you are confused between the Note 3 and the LG G3?
Well if that's the case then all I can say before buying the Note 3 I was in exact same situation. I was liking the G3, the screen to body ratio it has is really nice, the design is appealing, Knock code is good, OIS enabled camera, curved back is easy to hold and handle, and that display, well it isn't Note 3 class, but still it's QHD (which I personally find meaningless though). Also I personally believe that any UI is better than TouchWiz. But then I came across these two topics,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/crackgate-real-cause-concern-t2890331
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/problem-phone-coverage-t2923043
Also there's the over-sharpening issue of display, which I don't know fixable or not. And how much custom support does it have? Does it have a good kernel? If custom support matters to you that is.
To keep it short mate, LG is still not Samsung, they might be making a lot of progress, maybe at faster rate than Samsung did, but as of now if you want a complete and polished package then you might wanna go with Note 3. Also IMHO, if you can utilize the S Pen then that thing alone can kill any device without it.
Now your choice, remember this is Note 3 section, so if any comments are to come it will favour the Note 3, the opposite will happen if you had asked this on G3 section, that's quite normal, but the above opinion of mine is a completely unbiased one. If I didn't like the G3 I would not have wasted two weeks of continuous reading about it.

Sell it, get a dev edition all problems solved
Get a Dev Edition, seriously. I liked my retail Note 4, but I LOVE my DE N4.
The problem with dev edition phones, like every dev edition before it, is that you are one of very few people with it which means development is next to nothing. The good development always happens on the devices with the most users. That's the retail version, which doesn't have root, or unlocked bootloader, and the two phones can't use the same kernels and whatnot..... It's really not as good as it sounds.

Actually for the verizon folks it is as good as it sounds! Let's face it, you'll never have an unlocked bootloader on the retail note 4...I personals doubt it'll ever see root(I hope I'm wrong). For the dev edition there's enough development already! We got an almost fully stable CM12/beanstalk ROM and a bunch of touchwiz ROMs. It might not be much but its huge compared to the retail note 4 at the moment. You'll never see any aosp even if you ever do get root on the retail.

Yeah I'm selling because I'm a flashaholic...the Nexus 6 is a poorer phone in my opinion compared to my Note 4, but I like flashing new shtuff every day...even though Mod57 has been pumping out his ports of CM12 based stuff for us DE owners on a daily /twice daily schedule..I like variety and pissing my girl off by running through my paltry 20gigs per month Verizon data allowance. I've had a Nexus in the past, I don't see the hype. Sure you can install all the ROMs you want, but with xposed and wanam xposed, the ROMs for me aren't really necessary.
I may end up with DE Note 5 just for root, but right now my Note 2 is still doing fine.

Wow. You can add different launchers. You can change the keyboard. Massive flexibility with wallpapers. Gazillion different widgets for weather, time, calendars, news feeds. Use a different SMS app. External storage. S-pen. None of the above requires root and most can't be done on iPhone. With all that, you find the iPhone more open?

Its awesome...its a port from USC for us with DE's... You may have to play around to get LTE but I know the 2/3 build works...flash that. Mod put out a couple builds likevCM12, Liquid Smooth, Beanstalk and AICP...Beanstalk has been the best all around and with working LTE out of the box..try 2/3 build with Zion's 1.5 beta Ultimate kernel..you might get a couple FC's but they'll go away and you'll never go back to TW
I have a Note 4 and recently bought a used iPhone 6 128GB at a good deal. I agree it seems "more open" because after being able to jailbreak, the tweaks make the device so much more desirable than the Note 4.
New launcher isn't needed since it doesn't lag like the Note 4's launcher but you can rescale and and you can add tweaks to add a launcher through cydia. You can also change the keyboard on ios 8. I don't really use the spen, and the SMS app works perfectly for me not like the Note 4's laggy sms app. But you can change it as well if you're jailbroken.
In saying this, I love the Note 4 hardware but hate touch wiz with a passion, to me it's terribly slow and i've owned the Note 2,3, and 4. If i could installed stock Lollipop on it i would have kept it. I could have bought a DE version sure, but why should I lose money buying the same exact device with open software essentially supporting a company that locked down my ability to remove their crappy software to begin with. I know Verizon and AT&T pushed Samsung to do this, but Samsung is a gigantic company, they could have said no.

Your right. A jailbroke ios device is just as good as my note 4. Every android phone i have had, had root right out the gate. I got sick of moto so I went with a note 4. Yeah it works fine, but I was flashing roms every day on my other phones and my nexus tablet. I thought since the note 3 had root so would this. Well I was wrong. I will keep this another few months to see if root happens. If not it's getting sold and will get a 6 plus. I have a jailbroke ipad and its tweaked out pretty hardcore. And it never lags and does everything I can do on my nexus. As much as i want to like this phone, I just can't get past no root. I have unlimited data so I will be with Verizon for a minute. I like the m8 but it's probably locked down too, the g3 has an unlocked bootloader on verizon I think? Not to many choices on verizon.
Well, let me tell you the truth friends. I was one of those folks who disappointed the Galaxy Note 5 because of not having the ability to swap the battery and the sdcard. I wasn't even considering an upgrade nor recommending to anyone! But boy, I've now changed my idea, why? because I realized that the note 5 is the best of phone out there.
Two weeks ago, someone brought me a 64 gb brand new galaxy note 5 and he wanted to sell it, I asked him how much he said 600, I said well I'll give you 450 he said okay. I called sprint to make sure if the devices is clean and they said good to go.... I gave him the money and here you go I started using my new note 5.. I really don't know the reason he was selling but maybe he was moving to outside of US, who cares the reason he was selling? the device is not reported lost or stolen... Anyway
I was using the device about two weeks and man, this device is so awesome. No more Samsung lags, no more freezing or stuttering, it's ridiculously fast and smooth. And that it's self is really big jump from the note 4. But it's not only that, the note 5 has the best screen, best camera, better speakers, better fingerprint and the most amazing thing which is Samsung Pay......... I was using that samsung pay one week and I haven't seen one single problem. Yes, the down side is that I was spending a lot of money lately because of that Samsung pay, every girl says; well we don't use mobile payments and I say to her well; well just watch and wait I'll show you, Oh my God what's this phone. I don't take my wallet no more, just my driver L. and that's all! Apple pay and Android pay works with only some NFC payment machines which sometimes they don't even turn it on!
In my conclusion, yes I'll miss sdcard and the removable battery but I have 64 gb internal memory and the note 5 has better battery life than my Note 4 so I can live up without these feature because of the many other good features of the phone..
I don't know about the upcoming Xperia Z5 Premium, but no other phone can compute with Note 5 today...
That was hard to read, but interesting and uderstood. Thanks for sharing.
They took away far too much for the 5 to be an "upgrade". Also, we now have Note 5 ROM's so there is certainly no reason to shell out the $ for the 5. Glad you like the new phone, but anyone on the fence to get the 5 or 4 coming from the 3 or other older phones should get the 4 hands down.

This sounds more like an impulse buy, and a good price. I'm very content with my 4.
The write up was a bit hard to read, but got the gist. Thanks for your opinion.

I was exactly saying something before but again the fact is that Note 5 is way faster and better than note 4. I had my note 4 a year and I know it very much. The phone is slow and laggy compare to the Note 5 and that's its self is worth an upgrade. I've installed note 5 rom on my note 4 but that's still slow unfortunately.

To each their own I guess. If you want to see slow and laggy you should see my wife's crappy Kyocera Torque. I started with the HTC Evo 4g years ago and where we are today is night and day compared to then. It all boils down to one's happiness with whichever phone, at least we are all smart enough to not be on team crApple.

hahaha, I absolutely got your point. It looks like phone manufactures are moving away from expand-ability and even removable batteries. Look the new Google nexuses, the new v10 phone from LG, and so on, so let's see how it goes. as long as I got enough battery and storage I honestly don't care.
The v10 has removable battery plus expandable storage.

That it does! Looks pretty sweet too as far as customization.
Yeah I'm rush for an upgrade just yet but that V10! Lol. I am curious to see what Sammy does with S7 though.

Currently have the Note 4 (and 3 and 2 before that). Since they took away the microSD and battery on Note 5, i was going to skip upgrading this year. Ended up pre-ordering the Nexus 6P (128gb) though. Figure if I didnt have microSD and removeable battery, id rather go stock android route. Hopefully I wont miss the removable battery too much since I do use that often.

Exactly what I did and loving my new N4. I played with the 5 on several occasions and I just didn't fall in love or even like with it. I wish I had because I could have gotten a 5 easily - but I fell in love with the 4 and it just kept drawing me back to it. From the 5 that is.
Coming from a Note 3 that I've had since it was released - the 4 is a very worthwhile upgrade. Very classy and fast as lightning running Sacs N5 2.1
Couldn't be happier.

I'd love to have the Note 5 for the fast wireless charging and MST for Samsung Pay. I have tons of free space on my 32 GB Note 4 with a 64 GB microSD. 20 GB free on the phone and 55 GB free on the microSD. I put everything on the cloud or on NAS. So microSD isn't a big deal for me. I'd be fine with a 64 GB Note 5. It would be nice to have a removable battery, but I can live without it.
To the OP...Im not trying to be a d here....But you know the saying.
I have messed with BOTH side by side. Took about 1 hour on my lunch break with a lady a coworker who just got the note 5 and i asked her to please lets check the differences. She was pissed off. The sprint rep said they were all out of note 4 she wanted the sd ir and battery being bigger and removable option. So being she wanted to know the difference too we had a group of us. We had people coming in and out of the breakroom. Asking randomly which screen looked better. Few said mine. Few said hers but most said same phones. Lol. Pics? Most were unable to tell. Granted we were inside it was well lit.
I wanted the note 5 to be so much more. But samsung really lost ground this year. The benchmarks are the only thing that stands out. That is all. Now add what it doesnt have? Its pure and simple the better choice however subjective.
Not to say I wont ever own one. I just cannot let marketing run my opinion. I am happy that you are happy and anyone that bought the phone. I can upgrade too and snag one for 200. Then 10 a month. But i really can not think of why i would pay for again for a lesser featured phone that offers way way way too close if not identical screens and cameras which are my focal points. Thats my thoughts.

Exactly. With the Note 4 being what it is and owning it still waiting for that right move to jump to a next phone... not knowing 2015 would be the year of Sh!t Smartphone releases. Now knowing, I think im just gonna ride out my 2 year (Oct '16, phone is owned, not 'leasing') and by then ill have a definite, if not before that date, answer of whether seeing that Samsung can rectify their COMPLETE lack of misdriven philosophy of form over function(form should always Follow function in my book) allowing me to make the decision to ditch Samsung altogether or jump ship...

I don't know much about the LG world but just checked out the V10. Looks like everything Samsung should have done with the Note 5, but this will not be on Sprint? If so that really blows.
The S7 and S7 edge has a locked bootloader for US versions, and conceivably the same for the upcoming Note 6. S6, S6 edge, note 5 have no removable storage/batteries.
Awesome development on the Note 4 here, and if we possibly get Android N, I can't see myself leaving the Note 4 for a long time.
Btw, seems like LG G5 has an unlockable bootloader but it's not possible to load a custom recovery. Not good. Seems like preventing customization is becoming a trend with the newer US phones. Of course there's still the Nexus but the hardware is only ok IMHO
I'm actively looking for a dual OS phone, contract ends Cyber Monday so I got some time. so far the only decent one I've seen is the Meizu Pro 5 n can't remember exactly why but something about it kept me looking elsewhere lol
I'm keeping both of my note 4's until i know for sure if the N6 bootloader is locked or not. I plan to stay on the N4 and continuing making roms as long as I can and until I have to upgrade my phone due to it being too outdated.
The Note 4, the last great phone Samsung ever made.

Yeay!! Thanks for giving us hope tx.
I have no desire to switch phones anytime soon. I love my note 4. It does everything I need it to do and when the battery dies I'll get a new one and the phone will be new again.

i have been pondering this question since first getting the note 4 . I love everything about it, but after lollipop caused touch screen issues and battery discharge, i thought i might have to go all in for something else- tried the G4 which was def a beast but it cant stand up to this powerhouse and with marsh 6.0 falling from the heavens... everything has been fixed, including the lack of response in the screen(entire top/left corner). if i have to i will buy note 4 replacements until the software starts falling short
I have a good idea. For those of us who want to stick with the N4 due to the locked bootloaders on the new devices, just put insurance on your line and keep using the N4. By the time your N4 finally dies or if you lose or break it, you can get a insurance replacement and most likely will be given a N5 or whichever device is comparable and available at the time. Most likely there won't be anymore refurbished N4's by then. The deductable is still cheaper than the 2-year new contract prices of new high-end smartphones and cheaper than paying out installments for those who do that. So it will all work out for the better if you just wait it out and see how devices & bootloaders turn out.
My wife just got a new Note 5 for a broken Note 3!

So my wife's note 4 died and our insurance gave her a note 5. She admits she is non-techie and only uses basic functions and yet she still misses the note 4 functions and hardware (custom rom, IR). Long live the Note 4 and roms from tx_dbs_tx!!
You guys are lucky my note 4 stopped working and they replaced my phone with another note 4 . It took 3 days to come to the sprint store it was refurbished too

A replaceable batter is a must! On heavy use days I have to swap out batteries by mid-afternoon. Not to mention the fact that by the end of year one your original battery doesn't last as long as it used to. I've always had to get a new battery or two before needing a new phone.

I agree with you, a few months ago I upgraded from my Note 2 to the Note 4 and other than missing the dual modem (LTE while using calls), this is the best Android phone I have had. I plan to stick with it until theres no life left as I cant stand the stock OS's (other than the ones you touch) so I cant see myself ever using a stock phone.
If they begin to lock the bootloaders everywhere, this will royally suck for Android. The best thing about Android is the freedom so I hope these asshole manufacturers and carriers listen to their customers before they are no longer customers.
The bootloaders can be unlocked with a little time and effort. However, there is only a very small number of people with the skills to to it. My advice would be to research these talented people and support their efforts in advance

I think I am either getting a developer edition of whatever phone is available at the time or move to the Nexus and use vanilla AOSP.

Interesting read, I personally didn't know the EXTSDCARD changes and sealed the battery. Dumb dumb dumb, hopefully Samsung figures out in time for my upgrade or I'm buying a Nexus.

Long story short, I updated my old note 4 from OB7 five weeks ago to marshmallow, and hated it. My replacement note 4 from Sprint had marshmallow on it, so went to 5.1.1 OG5, due to that being all I could downgrade to, and hated it as well.
After 5 weeks of being miserable, I finally made it back to OB7 via a custom rom and OB7 modem, but still on OG5 bootloader.
So, due to me not liking either 5.1.1 or 6.0.1, I will keep my note 4 until I am forced off of it, due to network changes. I will then migrate to Apple.
I didn't like the last two versions of android, so I have zero faith in Android N and being able to root a sprint note 6.
