So having owned and loved the Note Edge when it came out in 2014, then I had to switch to the Nexus 6 while I was on Google Fi, I decided to jump back to Tmobile and grab the s7 edge.
Well. I had the V10 LG actually, but it kept having overheat issues, so they switched me to the s7 Edge because they were out of the S7 regular.
But as it stands I gotta say, the edge screen function on this device is crap compared to the Note Edge screen. I have to swipe a goofy small box that is hard to get at with a case on, only to have the phone lag slightly as it loads up everything. This boggles me because its literally NO different from simply hitting the home button and launching the app I wanted from the home screen. Whereas on the Note Edge, I could have all my apps I used frequently right there on a separate side screen.
Kinda sad about that actually. Hell. Even the V10 had that extra screen up top that had 4 apps I could place that I used frequently to save time.
The phone itself is fantastic. I have the silver one, and it's hands down the most beautiful device I have ever owned. Bar none. Battery life is alright, I game a lot. The camera is superb (wish the camera controls were on the edge screen like the note edge too). Wish I could get a case that was the same material the phone itself is made out of.
All in all. Not too impressed by the edge feature on this phone compared to the Note Edge. Both still suck in the way that they are underutilized and under developed as far as third party apps go.
Night Clock feature has always been my favorite on both devices and I wish it could be permanently on, not on a 16 hour limit.
Honestly. I'll probably jump to the V20, or back to the Note Edge soon.

I agree with basically everything you said. I disabled every edge feature. I personally got the edge because it's so pretty looking and the bigger battery is nice. Finding a good case and screen protector is probably the hardest part of ownership. I love the phone, but the edge has more cons than pros. Still very satisfied with my purchase.
Yes I agree I did not have the Note Edge before but that was the full side screen the new S7 Edge Edge feature really sucks
Yep, just yep
Yep the edge screen is mainly for making the device look awesome and awkward to hold without a case. I like my S7 Edge for the most part.
It definitely serves form more than function.
It's a YMMV kind of thing if you ask me. I own two different cases, one is low-budget for sure, and edge swiping isn't effected by either.
I like the feature to be honest - as someone who never experienced it before. I certain that some cases screw up the whole thing though.
Dexterity probably has A LOT to do with it ... that and geometry of one's hand.
You can't blame Sammie for what case mfg's do or don't do well ...

So I got the S6 Edge the moment it came out
(Actually arrived two days before its official release date in Ireland)
its the first Galaxy I've owned since the S2
(Might be controversial, but I hated the S3,4 & 5 due to over plasticy feel and rubbish TouchWiz interface)
So getting the Edge....I was very very impressed with the speed of the phone, the camera, the battery life......very good
Except I quickly felt the 'Edge' is just a total gimmick.
Style wise its really nice...but none of the Edge features were useful in anyway to me. I also didn't need the 64GB of storage as I never put music on it.
But instead of moving onto another phone model (which I have a massive tendancy to do) I decided to swap for the S6(+cash) And I am still really happy with the phone.
I dont miss the Edge at all.
Any of you guys feel the same?
yes same with me I initially went to buy the edge but ended buying plain S6, it's just a gimmick with the edge.
I heavily contemplated the edge when it came out. After playing with both in store and factoring in the price difference, I went with the s6 and haven't regretted it one bit - in fact, I'm very happy with my decision.
Edge is real real amazing design but badly I need dual sims so only regular S6 to me, this is the main reason.
The Edge screen is also smaller in reality bcoz of the curve on both sides, that meant when you surfing the web only got around 4.7" ~ 4.8" reading size which is another unacceptable reason to me. Not to mention the Edge screen is always darker and will consume more battery at the same brightness level and the battery is already not enough.....
There are just too many disadvantages other than the price, so I go for normal one. I still very like the edge until now but real no way.
To be honest...that was also one of the reasons was the slight loss of actual screenspace
Theverge said it best, go in store and look at the Galaxy s6 edge, enjoy its beauty, then get the regular S6

Yes. I purchased the Edge kept it a few days then found it to be a waste of the extra cash so returned it for the S6 and am a happy camper. The Edge is stunningly good looking but truly over priced. The 32Gb versions are 150.00€ difference in price. I could not justify that.
The S6 is vastly outselling the Edge per unit. I ponder what Samsung make of that?
Ryland
they have been advertising the Edge a ton on TV around here, the format to me doesn't make any real sense. Never even considered it.
Absolutely, the S6 edge"s" makes the phone look narrow and you lose screen real estate. Awful gimmick. Regular S6 is gorgeous for me.
The Edge is stunningly good looking but truly over priced.
I couldn't stand the light reflections on the edge screen when watching youtube videos.

Well i picked up white S6 after couple of weeks of launch and then i played with both edge and regular and just felt that edge was too expensive. Also thought S6 felt better after a month or so i was regretting of not getting the edge but it seems that not many useful features have been added to it so now i feel better for going with the regular. I do feel it was too expensive to begin with.
I was dead set on getting the edge until I held one in a store. I opted for the standard S6. I felt the edge was slippery to hold, looked thinner, had light reflection. Prefer the feel and look of the standard S6.
I would have probably picked the regular S6 even at the same price. With the Edge being so much more expensive, for me getting the S6 was such an easy decision.
just so u didnt know, edge is far more durable than a regular s6.
look around youtube, s6 edge vs s6 drop test
Yeah, right. All you need is a proper case for your S6. You can find excellent choice of good cases for just 15$.
i got the normal s6 over the edge and must say more than happy with it

Anyone dropping their phone is putting their phone in the lap of the gods. A normal drop from head height shouldn't be bothering the S6 or the Edge though, barring scratches.
The main problem I had with the Edge is the grip. The sides are so thin that the phone doesn't feel good in hand.
I ended up buying a 920F without any carrier subsidy like I've done with all my previous phones, and the price for an international Edge was just ridiculous. I couldn't bring myself to shell out that much for a depreciating asset. Anyways I'm happy with my normal s6, I did think the Edge screen made it look smaller and like others didn't like how it felt in the hand. Kinda important for something that you're holding all day every day.

so i think the Edge 6 plus in gold just look phenomenal but there's something in me that says the S pen on the note 5 is more practical then the edge ticker. i went in the VZW store yesterday and i couldnt get the edge info ticker or other options to work right, but im attributing that to the VZW demo that kept popping up on the screen. I know the edge screen doesnt do much, but does it work like it's supposed do?
i know the phones are almost identical besides pen and edge....
any other reasons i should pick the 6+ over the note 5?

no trying to decide
Samsung S6 Edge+ Plus is faster in benchmark
Gold colour is the best
screen looks more beautiful, curved edge on both sides. 3D effect
better battery life
edge s6+ is more lighter. not heavy for its size.
are you going to use the S pen for 1 or 2 weeks then never use it again?
.
Just swithched from N5. Love the looks, form factor and the screen is more accurate.

If you want the Stylus and its features go Note 5. If you want the sexiest design in market go Edge+. The Edge+ is slightly faster on benches and has slightly better battery life due to the lack of all the stylus features that run in the background. Do not expect features for the edges they are there for sexiness and design and I love them. Swiping from the edges feels really good on them. The Edge+ in Gold is really dope and eyecatcher all my friends ask me immediately what's this phone and want to touch it. Also the Edge+ feels more compact on hand and despite its screen size it's really small. If it feels slippery on your hand and the Edges are hard for you to grip on I will suggest you to use a transparent TPU case which will not hide the sexiness of the phone and will help a lot the grip. Despite their design differences and the stylus internally those 2 are exactly the same.
I bought the edge 6+ because I couldn't find a 64gb Note 5. I looked at both, the edge is sexier.... At a price. It's an uncomfortable phone to hold, this after two months of it. It's so beautiful that you want to hold it all the time though. Also, the edges catch light differently, and the keyboard is not so accurate to use.
Practically, if I had had the Note 5 in 64gb in front of me I'd have chosen that.
32gb on either, despite what people say, is too little.
Cross posted from the V10 section - wondering if anyone made the switch to an S7 edge
Still no zerolemon extended battery means I am not really "invested" into this phone and the fact that I cannot use the fingerprint scanner (I have tmobile) if I have a case on the phone is still frustrating.
I am ultimately going to switch to the note 6 when it arrives but I am pondering switching to the S7 edge for the time being. I had a note 4 edge and liked it, however, going from the note 2, note 3, note 4, V10 I am worried about the size of the S7 edge.
The always on screen of the S7 and the relative uselessness (customization and such) of the V10's 2nd screen means the only thing I am really going to miss is the dual front camera. Other things about my V10 have just been pissing me off lately, like requiring a restart for the phone to begin fast charging.
Not a rant session, just surprised I am considering a change to an S series and wondering if anyone else had made such a change and how you feel.
Derek
Mine will be here early next week hopefully. The v10 is an awesome phone but I'm one of the lucky few whose phone gets hot and has battery life of 6 hours barely hitting 2 1\2 hours sot.
Depending how the note 6 is I plan to upgrade to that as well as I loved the original note edge but the 5.0.1 update ruined the battery life for me on that phone.
I went from Note Edge to S6 Edge+ to LG V10 to S7 Edge.
Love the phone so far. I missed the Samsung premium feel and the better display.
The screen is much brighter and more vivid. The speaker is much louder. The build is a lot fancier.
It's a bit smaller so I'm getting used to holding the S7 Edge, but I love it so far.
Hmm for some reason my photos wouldn't attach earlier. Here you go.
is the front camera for the s7 edge a wide angle one like on the V10?
No but there is the wide selfie u can take. It's like a panoramic photo for selfies. Move camera from left to right a little and it'll merge the photos
thank you for the photos! Tmobile says my s7e has shipped.
V10 -> S7E here... waiting patiently for T-Mo to say it's on its way... it's been 3 whole days since I ordered... I don't know if I can do this...
I am up for refresh and my options are S7 or S7 edge. I get my phone through the company I work for, and unfortunately the new note is not on the table.
I guess I am looking to hear from folks who have been using the edge. Is it better?
I get that the battery is a bit better which is great, but I am on the fence about the edge screen. Is it useful? Do you like it for it's aesthetics, or is it just annoying?
I know that the edge screen makes the phone a bit more vulnerable, which is an entirely different concern. Just looking to get 2-4 cents from people who have the phone before I buy. Thx!!

Personaly I went for the edge mostly for the bigger battery.. but I guess the design aswell.
Yes the curved screen is pretty annoying due to accidental touches, but there's an easy fix to that.. put a case on!
Kind regards

I got the edge one mainly because of the bigger battery and because of design-perception.
I am totally satisfied with this device although i dont use the edge this much.
But i think it depends on your usage.
I also got an Edge.
Waste of the extra money! The frequent accidental edge touches and subsequent random app behavior and wild scrolling are annoying and the edge apps are of negligible value to me. I will buy a non-Edge device next time again, for sure.
Appreciate the replies. That's my concern Jaiy. I am tempted to hang onto my s5 until the next thing comes out. Looks like the note 7 edge is implemented a little better.

I got the edge because it has bigger display and battery. And it just looks dope.
The bigger display was the reason for me. Even a very thin case will solve the accidental touch problem. As for edge functions, I do use the edge App panel all the time, and occasionally others. And I've found the edge clock handy when in hotel rooms.
I don't find the curved screen annoying in any way.
Edge. Fantastic device.
I couldn't care less about the edge functionality, but I do care about the much bigger screen on the edge version. I guess the curved edges allow them to make the phone as small as it can be with a 5.5" screen.
go with the screen size u prefer. the edge features really don't have a benefit. the s7 is a much smaller compact phone than the s7 edge. i have used both of them an i prefer the edge. not because of the edge but because of the bigger screen.
Personally, I would go for the regular S7. Cheaper, easier to handle with one hand, getting a screen protector is easier, and less attractive, less likely for anyone to steal it.
I am in the minority here, I'm well aware of that.
I went with the edge. Arriving Friday. Here's hoping it delivers.
Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
For random touches there is an app called "Random touch blocker" I think. So that fixes those. And Edge version is a lot better. Battery life is really important for me. And Edge gives me a huge battery life compared to my old S6. Even though S7 has a huge battery You can still charge it really quickly. Just turn on ultra power saving mode, airplane mode, use amplify, lower cpu and gpu speeds and lock Your display. At lowest values the phone will lag a little but for a 15 minute charge You'll get like 50-70%. (With a fast charger).
Screen size in this case is also pretty sweet. 5'5 is not a tiny display, it makes playing games, watching videos, reading documents a lot easier. And it's not too big either. I can safely type on my keyboard using just one thumb. So it's perfect for me in this case.
The other reasons why You would want a S7 Edge are: design. It simply looks amazing. I've never seen a phone that looked so pretty. When You look at it from any angle You'll be admiring it a lot. Most people enjoy bezeless displays. Because they really will give You that amazing 3D/Bend"y" feeling.
I got the edge for the bigger battery and screen size. Using a case gets rid of the accidental touch issues (i am using a spigen hybrid case).
Sell me on the device! I currently have the S7E and its due for an upgrade and looking to pick up the V20 primarily for its video and audio awesomeness. Is it worth doing this upgrade? Part of me thinks its not really a good idea being they are pretty even spec wise (what I can see). So for people that use the phone camera alot is it worth upgrading to?
My wife has S7E. I came from Note 7. Felt like S7E was a downgrade from Note 7.
I've been thrilled with the V20 overall. I'm not a big camera person - so can't give much input there. But from an overall experience I'd definitely recommend it.
Absolutely worth the shift. Move on with V20 without any doubt.

Some people will tell you "don't because the photos will come up with an oil painting effect " however, i only see that when i zoom the photo to the maximum and not in all the photos i get to see it. But i love how this phone take pictures ans videos. And also how it sounds. If you happen to have a friend with a V20, ask him to lend it to you for a couple of minutes and give it a try. In my opinion, it is worth the $820 - 200 = 600. 600 - 149 = 451. This if you got all the promotions ?
I actually switched from a S7 Edge to the V20, and I love it. The V20 is so much faster, and I think the second display implementation is much better than the edge display (although I kinda miss AOD and the Amoled but it's not a huge loss).

I agree w 2nd display vs edge. Never used edge. If i had gone to S7, might have gone non-edge variety. Use 2nd screen all the time on V20.
Never used always on display on Note 7 - 2nd screen is much better implementation for the same info
Also thought id miss LED - haven't one bit.
Thought the finger print sensor on back was awkward at first. But with V20 just have to put finger there, not push button to activate like Note 7 - it has worked well.
Lack of physical buttons - real ones feel strange now lol.
Thought i would miss SPen - don't - EXCEPT the ability to make gifs with it.
Several other new features too that have enhanced my opinion of V20 as not only a replacement of Note 7, but an upgrade.

The one downside with 2nd screen is, being LCD, I have to turn it off at night because there's a good amount of light leaking. Not a huge issue, at least LG include the feature to put it on a timer.
I love the position of the fingerprint sensor, it's so much better than being on the front. With front scanners, you have to bend your thumb terribly to reach the scanner when holding the phone with 1 hand. With the back sensor you can practically rest your finger on the sensor. And the Tap-On unlock code is such a cool feature for when you can't reach the back of the device. The 1 thing I hate though is the power button. I love how fast the device unlocks but sometimes I actually want to see the lock screen.

I used tap on/pin personally when finger print is not convenient. But that's rare. I cant remember the last time i actually pressed the power button.

Haha sorry it really isn't that bad, just noticeable after using AOD on S7E
That's fair, I guess it's just nice to have the option. Maybe Android will do away with the lock screen in a few years anyway lol
Honestly I would say wait until the G6 is released or the Galaxy S8 is released. Then you can make your decision. Sure they are a couple of months out, but those phones more than likely could and probably will be a better upgrade than the V20. But then again, if you're wanting a phone that you can for sure root and have an unlocked bootloader then definitely make sure you pick one of these guys up soon.
Look. I came from a N7 to the V20. I actually quite prefer the asthetics and the AMOLED display of the N7. However, when I decided to make the switch, I knew what I was going for in the device. I wanted a multitude of features that the V20 had that the N7 lacked. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I actually wanted the V20 more than the N7, so it felt like an upgrade to me. If you are looking to be talked into a device, it isn't the right one for you. I say hold off until end of Feb middle March when they announce the S8 line and see what that brings. If nothing exciting is projected, then you still have the V20 (or even the G6) to upgrade to.
Love the v20 of you like crisp clear audio its a must buy.
I drive truck so i use it for music etc 12 hours a day.

Well, I came from the short-lived Galaxy Note 7.
Strictly camera wise, I think the S7/N7 camera is a clear winner, especially in low light. But the wide angle lens for the V20 is incredibly useful. Just be careful with the lens, it's fragile.
But everything else about the V20 is terrific. Multi tasking with Nougat is brilliant. It's speedy, with lots of RAM. Battery life is good, removable and supports Quick Charge. At least for my variant, it supports Cat. 12 LTE, so it's future proof. And VoLTE, which means call quality is very clear.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with this phone. It's underrated IMO.
My only disappointment is it doesn't support 3G video calls. But I've read that some US variants support this.
My most recent phones have been the Galaxy S7e, Note 7, back to the S7e, 2nd Note 7, and now the V20. I went with the V20 because it had decent specs and I'd already done the S7e twice. If you like the camera in the S7 , you'll be disappointed with the one in the V20. I'd put the picture quality about equivalent with what I got from the Note 4. Personally I will probably get the S8 in April. I miss too many things from the Samsung line like the AMOLED screen, Samsung Pay, water proofing, wireless charging, and camera quality. I also like the edge screen better than the second LCD. I find the icons on the second LCD too high up to easily hit one handed. A couple things I have liked on the V20 are the rear fingerprint reader and the metal back.
Oh that I agree. The second screen on the top is too high, due to the large screen. So I don't really use it much.
I'm looking forward to the S8. Hopefully there is a model without the Edge display. I don't really need that.
V20 is a great phone feature wise, looks much better than the S7E (in my oppinion of course), audio output is great, software is decent, but battery life is a big letdown. Choose it only if you don't care about the battery life.
Thanks for all the reply's! I think I'm gonna go with the LG V20 switch it up. Is the Version version rootable?
Well it looks like many people answered your question,, myself i had the S7E for two weeks, before seeing that there was not a lot of development for the phone. That's why i switched.
i actually came from a note 7 as well. Had a choice between a v20 or a s7e.
I figured the s7e was a downgrade so i went with the v20.
my thoughts:
1. Note 7 camera is way better. At auto, you practically end up with great pictures almost every time. Many people will tell you here the v20 camera is awesome when it's in manual, but I don't have time to set the settings first before taking a shot. Taking pictures of moving objects such as people walking will end up with blurred people even in bright light. Manual settings at a faster shutter speed will fix that of course.
2. The second screen is useful when off when I want to turn on the flash light. But that's about the only use I have for it lol. I still end up using nav button to switch apps...habits die hard.
3. Battery life is good for both phones.
4. Screen of Note 7 is still better.
5. I think Note 7 to v20 wasn't an upgrade. It was a little downgrade, but it was newer than the s7e...so I guess I really didn't have a choice. It was a Note 4 to Note 7 anyways...so still an upgrade from that.
6. Do I think you should switch from an s7e to a v20....right now? no. Last year, probably a yes...but now that new phones are around the corner, I suggest you wait for those.
Look at the Mate 9 it's a great phone with insane battery and the speed of the software is unmatched. I also have a v20
