quickcharge on the opo? - ONE General

does the opo support Qualcom quickcharge 2.0?
iv'e seen a thread discussing this at the oneplus forums but didn't quite understand.
some claim that the opo do not have the required hardware to do so, even though its rocking the snapdragon 801 soc which should support it...
iv'e seen a couple of kernels claiming "usb fastcharge" - is this even referring to the same feature?
sorry if this question have been asked before, i still need clarification...

As a kernel developer (can you even call me a developer? I'm just meddling around, really, but I guess I learned a few things), I can answer at least one of your questions. No, the USB fast charge feature you're mentioning is NOT the same feature as Qualcomm QC 2.0. USB fast charge means that the kernel will treat USB charging as A/C charging, so that you can get A/C charging speeds even when you're charging from, say, a computer.

You could end up damaging the USB port if you demand more power from the port than it is designed to provide. The most I've seen on a stock USB charger is 500mA, compared to the usual 2A or so on A/C charging.

Yes USB charging rate is 500 mA and AC charging rate is 2000 mA .

When I'm running CM13 with a decent charger and cable, I get "rapidly charging" on the lock screen.
I get insanely close to the 2A limit and the thing charges very quickly.

Nexus 5X has Qualcomm SMB1358 Quick Charge 2.0 IC on logic board?

Hello,
I read in an article somewhere that the Nexus 5X has Qualcomm Quick Charge capabilities on the hardware side, but not on the software side. It also stated that this possible could be activated in the future. For the life of me I can not find the article now, but I did hop over to the tear down page that iFixit did on the Nexus 5X. Sure enough, the 5X does have the Quick Charge 2.0 chip on the logic board.

I'm not sure what this means exactly. Isn't USB C pretty much as fast / faster than QC 2.0? Or, would QC 2.0 via USB C be even faster?
This phone will never see qc. Google is all about open standards which is why it has usbc and can charge at 3amps.

God can people just stop with quickcharge?
The device is charging at 15W at max allready, and thats just for a short while. The majority of time charging is spent under 10W (2A).
QC is not magic and wont make a difference for N5X. My M8 with QC and the same battery capacity charges nearly identicaly as to my N5X (same battery capacity), it just goes 9v for a shorter while but the total wattage never goes above 15w for QC charger.
I feel like the desire for qualcomm quick charge is so that people can use the wall plugs and car chargers they already own because the adapters that actually support the usb c standard are few and far between or really expensive from Google, it's not about which one is better or faster.

That chip is a power management IC with QC features, does not mean LG/Google even hooked up the wires required to use it or put in the additional components that might be nessasary to make it work. I don't think Qualcomm publicly releases data sheets so we can't know but I doubt the hardware as a whole supports it.
In case anyone is interested. I have a Quick Charge 2.0 certified car charger and it works with my 5X. It enables "Charging rapidly". Same thing with my Note 4 rapid charger. Both work fine.

Hove you looked at the actual charging rate at all? Just because "charging rapidly" does not mean it is truly charging as fast as it should.

I'm gonna answer this even though I don't appreciate your tone. So I'm doing it for the benefit of others. Yes it does charge at a fast rate with all three chargers (stock, Samsung Fast Charger, and QC 2.0 charger). About 1-3% per min and it slows down, as it should, when above 80%.
And "Charging rapidly" wouldn't get triggered if the power management charging circuitry didn't detect that the charger had the proper dynamic output voltages/currents, with the power output being P(t)=V(t)*I(t). Your "rapid charger" will have two pairs of output ratings for current and voltage (some have 3).

I'm not trying to be mean and I did not intend to have a negative tone so I'm sorry for that, I just wanted to see the actual numbers when using that charger you mentioned and see how they compare to the OEM charger because from what I have read charging rapidly is faster than normal but has a very wide range that can trigger at much lower charging speeds than the OEM charger.

All of my testing on "charging rapidly" indicates that the phone is charging at 2.1A, not QC 2.0.
I suspect most QC 2.0 chargers offer 2.1A charging for when an iPad is connected, to prevent the user from returning the charger because it didn't charge their iPad. Google probably exploited that by simply telling the Nexus 5X to accept the iPad 2.1A handshake, which doesn't require QC 2.0 to be enabled.
It is possible QC 2.0 is just disabled in the baseband, but considering the backlash that Google got... I suspect they would have at least committed to enabling it, if that were an option.

USB type C to USB A fast charging?

Are USB type C to USB A cables capable of fast charging? Or is USB type C to USB type C the only way of getting fast charging?
You can get somewhat fast charging on an A to C cable theoretically, up to 2.4A, however as USB Type A isn't rated at 3A you won't get the full speed of a true Type C fast charger. I found with many Type A 2.4A chargers though that none say fast charging, but that may just be because I'm using the cable that came with my 6P.
I bought this cable and plugged it into a USB 3.0 port on my pc. It delivers just as much juice as the stock charger. The two both charge at the same rate.
Updated. I'll add that USB 3.0 is capable of delivering up to 5 amps with the right cable.

I have the Play store Google cables and they won't rapid charge with my car rapid charger , but the Type-C to Type-C google cables will with same charger . So I'm thinking no but I don't have a AC rapid charger to confirm .

A USB 3.0 port on a PC can only deliver up to 900mAh. The stock charger is 3000mAh.

That is a big difference in mAh. It does rapid charge pretty fast though when plugged into my pc. It did not rapid charge with the cable Google provided though. I had to buy the joto which I showed above.

Does your phone say rapid charging? What does Ampere show as the rate of charge?
Before the car was broken into I had a Belkin 4 port charger and the A-C cord delivered fast charging just fine, the one it came with AND the third party cord I ended up using also, have a couple of Yoozon branded cords from Amazon
I have a-c cable, and tried charge it using a 2.0a power bank. It says charging rapidly. Is it save to charge this phone using power bank?

Yes. It says rapid charging. I'm not home now but will check what it says it charges at. I did grab a screen shot yesterday though. You can see by "USB debugging connected" that I am in fact plugged into my pc and it says rapid charging.
Connected to pc I get Max 1050 mAh. On stock charger I get 1850 mAh Max. So the stock charger will be about 40% quicker than USB 3.0. Guess one could just buy a USB C 3.1 pci card if they need it as fast as the stock charger

The stock charger is 3000mAh, so depending on how low your battery is (it charges at a higher amperage at a lower battery, and slower as it gets close to full), you would likely see 2500-3000mAh when charging a nearly empty battery, which would be 3x faster than a computer USB port. I'm not sure why it says charging rapidly though, that should only happen if it's above 2000mAh or so.

Maybe an extra pin being present tricks it(wild guess). I did notice the fluctuations in mAh and am glad to know that's normal . One thing I noticed in the app ampere is it said the port was capable of delivering 1800 so maybe it's just reporting wrong in marshmallow.

Fast charging with 2A charger

Can anybody confirm if faster charging is possible with a 2A non stock charger? How much time does it take to reach 100 percent?

Absolutely correct, the phone doesn't have FAST/QUICK charger technology...
However a higher ampere charger like 2A could still charge a phone faster, hence my query above
Are you sure it takes 90 minutes to fully charge with stock 1A charger as mathematically it's not possible
3000mAH/1000mA=3 hours
Or
3000mAH/1.5H=2000mA or 2A
Pehaps you are using a higher capacity charger? That would explain it...

Yes, you have right.
We can put a 10 A capability charger at our device, but charge control circuit is doing his job and let device charging with 1 A max, even if is there 10 A disposable....
Maybe with some command in hidden menu or with some customized firmware is a way to override this limitation.
(At LG 4X HD is in hidden menu a command that enable fast charging).

I doubt we will be able to find any such software hack to allow fast charging.
There just isn't enough development going on for this phone for anyone to discover and share such information

Instead of 5V1A(5W) or 5V2A(10W) with 9V2A(18W) charger, the charge circuit control will sense 9V instead of 5V and maybe switch to fast charge...
2 Amp charger are only needed if you are using a 2 or 3 meter USB wire.

I dont think so.... the options you mentioned actually mean QC 2.0 technology which we know for sure isn't available in P9 lite
There are few mentions of phone supporting 5Vx2A online; one such link shared by me in earlier post...

The P9 Lite doesnt support any sort of fast charging. The ability of a phone to charge faster depends on it's hardware and the use of a fast charger. However, with a 2A charger, it slightly decreases charging time since the phone pulls approximately 1050mA. Be careful not to use a charger thats higher than 5V as it will fry your circuitry.

Where did you get this 1050mA spec, did u measure it yourself? This could be true as well, as fast charging is not observed by anyone until now except few online sources which state otherwise...
The part about damaging phone is inaccurate as QC 2.0 or 3.0 chargers are reverse compatible with old devices which support 5V only, the phone and charger never switch to 9V/12V/20V mode as the technology isn't there...

I did measure it myself with the aid of a friend. By the way, I was referring to a standard 9V/12V charger, not the QC charger.
According to my knowledge, the voltage is like a gateway to your phone, your phone pulls the current. Hence, if you use a standard charger with higher than 5V, you'll most definitely burn your circuitry. BUT....if you use a 5V charger with an abnormally high amperage, the phone will only pull the current it needs.

That would confirm it without doubt that online reports are incorrect and phone can't charge above appx 1A

I believe that is true. Although, most fast chargers (like the samsung one) only supply 1.67A at a higher voltage, normally 9V. This combination increases the output wattage of the charger....Like i said on my earlier post, the voltage is the gateway to the phone while the phone pulls the amperage.

Can i use a quallacom quick charge charger rated at [email protected] (i guess what turbo power gives is 9v at 1.67A)

Yes I use my samsung charger (9v 2amp) on my G4 all the time shows as turbo charger when plugged in.

I don't think you understand, there is no charger specifically for the SD625 or any other chipset... this is merely Qualcomm's Quick Charge technology, but Moto/Lenovo didn't want to pay the licensing/royalty or whatever else to call it that, so they call it TurboPower. I have a Qualcomm QC 2.0 adapter here at my desk and if I connect it, it clearly says "TurboPower Connected".

Again, I don't understand what you mean. The SD625 support Quick Charge 3.0, but the charger supplied with the device is a QC 2.0 compliant adapter that is labeled "TurboPower", at least in the US. If I connect a Samsung GS7 to the Moto charger, it shows Fast Charging as well.

Honestly? I'm guessing it's a royalty or licensing thing, they can't say "Quick Charge 3.0" because they didn't pay the fee.
Just my guess... I have nothing to back that up.

Have you ever tried the Quick charge 3.0? Some users report that quick charge 3.0 doesn't work. I haven't tried it coz I don't have the QC 3.0 charger

QC3 Chargers can use QC2 to charge devices. Whether or not the phone supports it is irrelevant.

I'm just asking coz QC 2.0 charger is cheaper then QC 3.0 charger
And both will work fine. A 8 second Google search will tell you this. Try looking before asking!

Ok, using "highly" and "much better" here might have been a bit overkill... From 1.0 to 2.0 the difference is huge, from 2.0 to 3.0 not so much, especially on a device like this that isn't drawing a ton of current consistently.
Is a 3.0 charger better for the longevity of the battery, and thus the device, over the long term? Yes. Is it significant enough to pay the extra over a 2.0 charger? That's your call... After a year or so of consistent use it might not even make a significant difference in battery life, it may add a month ot two to the longevity of the phone over it's lifespan, no one can say for sure because each case is unique.
My chargers, except car chargers, far out last my phones, I've had the same charger on my nightstand for 4-5 years now (seriously, it's from a Blackberry Playbook) so it's an investment...
I don't understand the issue here... A good QC 3.0 charger is a few bucks more than a 2.0 charger, and if you look you can get one for $10-$12, so is two or three dollars worth worrying about this?
If you are just concerned about what is best for the battery, never use a quick charger at all...

After a year or so of consistent use it might not even make a significant difference in battery life, it may add a month ot two to the longevity of the phone over it's lifespan, no one can say for sure because each case is unique.
My chargers, except car chargers, far out last my phones, I've had the same charger on my nightstand for 4-5 years now (seriously, it's from a Blackberry Playbook) so it's an investment...
I don't understand the issue here... A good QC 3.0 charger is a few bucks more than a 2.0 charger, and if you look you can get one for $10-$12, so is two or three dollars worth worrying about this?
If you are just concerned about what is best for the battery, never use a quick charger at all...

I use right now Aukey QC 2.0 charger and I consider buying QC 3.0 charger so thank you for the explanation.

That is my charger at work... If you have a QC 2.0 charger, don't bother getting a new one. If you are buying one, get a 3.0 one.
I know this thread is a little dated and I'm a late comer to this thread, but I just bought the g5 plus on a black friday deal at best buy $300 down to $225, US xt1678 variant, 64gb storage and 4gb ram, I jsut could not resist it for that price, and....it was actually cheaper than the 32gb storage 2gb ram variant which was listed at $229
Anyways on to my question, this is for acejavelin. You said your qc 2.0 worked and came up as showing turbo charging (not just normal charging)? I hope I am reading this correctly. Also is this one of those Qualcomm® Quick Charge 2.0 chargers, that's what I was looking at buying for my car and was curious if it worked. Just checking to make sure I'm reading the thread correctly.
I recently just bought a 2.1 fast charge lighter plugin, but guess what, it doesn't turbocharge only normal charge. I tried with the cord that came with the phone, as well as 2 other cords and still only normal charge for each one.
Now with my wall charger (the provided turbocharger that came with the g5 plus) in the house, all 3 cords work and show as turbocharge as long as I am using the provided moto turbo charge wall charger.
I also was curious and tried an old samsung charger that I used on I think it was the s4, last samsung I owned lol. With my nexus 5x which has USB-C worked wonderfully with it, but sadly turbo charge does not work so well with the samsung wall charger, because it does not show as turbo charge, but only normal charge on the g5 plus.

Why on earth was fast charging disabled for this nexus?

They didn't disable anything - it doesn't have the Qualicom Quick Charge variant, but it does have it's own variant of a rapid charge.
Using two wall chargers I have here and a Benson certified USB-C Cable, one of the wall chargers support QC2.0 and the other QC3.0. Both charged "normally" reporting on the screen as "Charging".
Using the stock USB-C wall charger that came with my 6P, using EX Kernel and the stock kernel from January 8.1 stock ROM, both reported "Charging Rapidly". I switched kernels using EXKM and a backup of the stock Kernel to test this.
Also, I bought a Tronsmart USB-C Car Charger, and it too reports "Charging Rapidly".

Nexus 6p just charges at a higher amperage then most average phones. As long as you use a charger with 5V/3A you should get charging rapidly. Just remember as the battery percentage increases the amps get lower. Use an app like ampere to make sure your getting close to 3000mA. I think the highest charge I seen on the stock plug was like 2800mA.
Well I bought an ANKER Charger and usb cable with it which definitely says it is fast charging compatible. When it comes to charging my phone I got a small text on my lock screen showing me how much charge there is going to the phone while charging. The average charging mAh is 1,400 and the voltage is 4.3V. I am pretty sure that it has reached a higher charge rate....I'll have to keep an eye on it. Do you think thats an acceptable charging rate?

Anker doesn't support the variant of rapid charging that the 6P accepts, therefore it only will negotiate down to a normal "charging" rate, which IIRC is exactly what you're getting.

I'm having this problem too. I used to be able to rapid charge using anker usb c to usb c but now it just seems to charge normally not rapid charge.
Anyone know of a fix, let me know.
