So does Android Pay still work with Systemless Root? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I haven't been keeping up the last few months on Android Pay. I know a few weeks back it stopped working with Systemless Root. I then read there was a work around to disable SU and then use AP. That seems pretty pointless as you gotta go into the phone and click extra things before using it (defeats the purpose of it's convenience). So has a new work around been found to use AP without any extra steps like before?

Short answer, yes, there is a way.
Check the last few pages of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/supersu-safetynet-android-pay-t3298115
which will also point to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/unofficial-systemless-xposed-t3388268
Seems like a pain in the butt. I've stopped using AP, can't give up root.

Do you know if this all works on nougat?

It worked for people on DP5. Haven't checked to see if running on final release. Reviewing those threads will probably answer that.
And, in re-reading your original post.....it's not an *easy* way.

It's actually pretty simple using magisk to get it to work. It took me like 10 minutes to get it all up and running on Official Nougat :good:

Easy to set up.....but seems like a hassle to use, no? Plus running a root method other than SuperSU concerns me from a safety standpoint. But then again, Chainfire is stepping away from SuperSU, and who/what is CCMT? Also don't need/want Xposed.
How many clicks to disable root for AP use? How many to re-enable?
My nightmare: getting to the front of the line and didn't prep to use AP.....delaying people behind me. Don't want to be *that* guy. How many seconds to prepare for AP?

Open the Magisk Manager app and click the toggle to disable root...use AP....open Magisk Manager re-enable root. That's it.

the reason to root the nexi

So, for my sake, and others considering to take the plunge, what are some real benefits of rooting? I have had my nexi for 6 days now and I need a real good reason to root, because as we all know, it voids the warranty. Agree?

Custom ROMs, certain apps that require root/su access, and custom themes. Whether those are real good reasons or not is up to you.
just a quick question, ive read the tut on rooting the nexus, what i do not understand is can u only do the root and not the rest of it, as it says to install this image then recovery, as i do not want to put custom roms on, is this possible,
sorry new to android, been windows mobile for so long,

Alright so another question for you my good man, how easy is it to achieve root? Because I literally had the hardest time on my magic. It got me so heated that I never tried again. And now in the tutorial for rooting it makes it sound amazingly easy.
takes minutes to do I did it in less than 5

unlocking the bootloader does NOT give you root, it simply ALLOWS you to root. Root access is part of a custom ROM (a modified kernel I beleive). You can leave the stock ROM on and just install the superboot image on top of it to get root access (see modaco's thread in development section).

The easiest way would be to unlock the boot loader, then flash Armon's recovery, then flash Modaco's rooted stock ROM(he made a rooted version of the stock updated ROM, no changes other than the root).
It should take about 10 minutes total if you are experienced and bang it out... being new, probably take about 20-30 minutes since I am sure you will be double checking along the way.
There are some great guides in the Nexus One Dev section, the best IMO is this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=612858
If you already have the full update flashed, you don't need to do the radio again.

zach, I was in the same boat as you, and I was looking for an ultra-noob friendly walkthru for rooting. I found youtube to be the best source, as you can see the process on someone else's phone first. I was shaky reading even the walkthru on xda forums, but youtube cleared it up. Just google "nexus one root" and you'll get a boat-load of videos.
Hope that helps....

Oh man I didn't even think of that. Thank you so much for the idea.
The big reason I needed to root the phone was TETHERED access! Both wired and wireless.
I travel a bit, and more often than not I cannot get a decent WIFI signal, or I am in someplace that requires me to pay for access (like a hotel). Almost EVERY hotel in Las Vegas for instance requires you to pay for internet access.... but with tethering... I am golden and surfing the web for free.
I also use SetCPU for profiles for when my phone is sleeping, charging, etc. I can usually squeeze out a little more life in the battery this way. Also... CacheMate is a great tool (especially if you are not using Apps2SD) for recovering extra space.... it's a "root" required app.
If you are a App-o-holic.... and NEED the extra room on your phone... you will want or need Apps 2 SD... .. and will need to have root access to do this.
Hope these suggestions help.
Some of my favorite things about rooting are Cyan's High-Mem Kernel, doubling the memory available, Tethering, Themeing(I can't stand the standard notification bar), and setting my clock speed to stay between 998 and 768. If you think the Nexus is fast now wait till you get High-Mem and change your CPU Clock settings.

[Q] Root Questions

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but anyways-
This is my first root project!
I want to root my VZW Note 3. However- I don't want to lose the samsung S-Pen software and features (would defeat the point of the s-pen) I would however like to be able to add more apps to the multi-windows panel as well as add the Note 2 s-pen feature of the "shape shortcuts". I also want to get rid of a bunch of samsungs bloatware.
Any ideas an how/where to go about this?
Your choices are limited for the Verizon N3. I just rooted via this thread. Painless. Do read through the thread, though, particularly the OP and the last 3 or 4 pages.

Do lots of reading on the link above. Kingo is a bit of a pain and I had to use an older version to finally get root. If this is your first root then read, read and read some more. Read how other people have bricked, or thought they bricked, their device and the suggestions people offered. Watch videos and follow carefully. I rooted the GN3 in the first hour I owned it and love the rom I am on. You will find the SPen functional in all roms that I have tried. BajaRom is my daily driver but they are all good. Have fun.

If you root you won't lose any features. The only thing root does is give you 100% access to do anything to your device. You can install and uninstall any apps you want.
Mabye you are confusing this with installing a custom ROM? A custom ROM is something someone created to override your particular operating system. Each one has it's own features, and comes with preset applications. Right now all the ROM's for the Note 3 have S-pen features enabled. You won't lose any functionality. There's tons of advantages a ROM will give you over just simply rooting. They often have all bloatware removed and have battery, GPS, or Wi-Fi tweaks.
Also, if your build number ends in MJE, the latest Kingo build (1.2x) is said not to work. One of the few places you may find an older version (1.1.5xxx) that works for mje is here:

I see that 1.2.2 came out just a few days ago. And it works for MJE on Verizon Note 3?
If so, what differences exist between 1.1.5.x (or 1.1.6x, both versions previously the latest version that worked with VN3/MJE) and 1.2.2?
Thanks All! Looks like I have a lot to research and learn before I attempt! Will post an update once I have achieved it.

I had to use 1.1.6 as the newer didn't work at all. slam face into wall was more fun.
It's really easy kamikazepyro. It should only take you a few hours of reading to be root ready. Get to it!

Received a 5.0.1

I was looking for a cheap tablet I could mount on the wall for home automation stuff. (I mostly use voice control, but I wanted something the housekeeper, pet sitter etc. would be more comfortable with.) So after researching I decided on the Fire, but thought I would get the most recent version and wouldn't be able to root. Still, I thought I could make it work with the addition of the Play Store.
I was thrilled when a 5.0.1 version showed up on my porch last night. Ignored all the demands to connect my wifi while I figured out what to do next. Getting the ADB drivers installed was the biggest challenge, but after that, thanks to Rootjunky's original Fire tool, I was able to quickly root, remove the ads, and install the Nova launcher. Thanks to a post here I was able to remove most of the Amazon stock junk safely. Now I have a perfect, cheap device that will do exactly what I want.
Thanks to all the XDA contributors who made it possible. You are awesome.
I share in your joy. I ordered three of these things, one for me and two for my kids. I got 5.1.1 (16GB), and the 8GB ones for my kids were 5.1.3 (not the newest 5.3.1), and 5.0.1. They seem to keep pretty loose track of what version is on the tabs they send out.
If only my 16GB unit were the one on 5.0.1... Oh well, thanks to the awesome people here, they are all actually running 5.3.1, but with their original bootloaders.
I raise my virtual glass to the great devs here!

Yes, thank you Davey126! you beat me to it. In the post you link, I'm referring to success in upgrading 5.1.1 with FlashFire.
LynnL, you should go to the OP that Davey126 is mentioning in that thread and follow the directions for 5.0.1, the "good" bootloaders. They're way easier and less nerve-wracking to update. No FlashFire required. You don't even need to be rooted to start with. Just download the TWRP recovery, start it up as directed in fastboot mode, and install the .zips in the order specified, one at a time, not all at once. After that's all done, just reboot into your shiny new 5.3.1. Last thing I found when Play Store was misbehaving was to get into Settings -> Manage All Applications, then go to the "ALL" tab (3 or 4 swipes to the right) and tap on Google Play Services. Then tap "Manage Space" and finally "Clear All Data" at the bottom of the resulting screen. After that, Play store got right back on track.
Hope this all helps, and I'll shut up now so you can get to it. Also, as Davey126 said, any other questions are best left to that other thread. Happy Fire hacking.

So much potential and its of no use since rooting is is worthless without xposed. I think we just settled

Even on my previous OnePlus which was just rooted FakeGPS did what I needed it to do without any issues. I didn't even install it as a system app (so effectively was running a non-root mode). What's the issue with it that you need both root and Xposed tweaks on top of it to do what you need?
I just used it for when abroad on vacation in Europe to watch YouTube TV in the hotel (VPN+FakeGPS=win). :silly:

The issue is I need apps like Device emulator, device id changer , that run only with xposed, moreover there are certain apps that hide detection of fake gps and these apps also need the Xposed framework. Most of the high end rooting apps need Xposed, so root is nothing without xposed

I don't think you get it. Let me simplify it - Rooting for most users = Xposed, and the phone does not allow you to downgrade, therefore no Xposed, therefore no use rooting, therefore the phone popularity will decrease.. Simple ?
Thread Cleaned.
This device was released with Pie and there would not be an Oreo release, atleast not official AFAIK. However there is a concept of virtual xposed floating around for Pie which is still in its initial stage so please allow some time for it to mature before we get something for Pie.
Everyone should know the forum rules so please go through them here. Lets keep the discussion on topic and avoid any personal comments.
Thank you for you understanding.

No, not simple at all.
Very few people, possibly only you, expect to buy a flagship and then downgrade it. I find it silly to expect otherwise. My only advice would be to sell it and get a OP6.
Also, rooting for most users does not = xposed, stop talking in hyperbole. I've been rooting android devices since Gingerbread days (loved that OG Droid) and I rarely use xposed. The only time I ever use it is if I want to run AOSP and then I'll run GravityBox. Most everything else is usually covered by Magisk. I used to run xposed modules for ad blocking YouTube, now theres Vanced YouTube in Magisk, for example. Of course, this example is limited to my experience, but since we're talking in anecdotes evidently, I'll play along.
You do you booboo, get rid of the phone if you like, I just find it silly to fault the phone for your incredibly niche need.

What he said below pretty much sums up my thoughts. I used root on previous devices for only a handful of very straightforward things (adblock, backup, and maybe a few other misc tweaks). I haven't used Xposed since Nougat and didn't really miss a few of the extras (like XPrivacy)

...too add to what he said if you feel you need all this "advanced" tinkering with Xposed + root why don't you develop a stable Xposed Pie build? Okay then...
Just a heads up for the people who say I'm the only one who wants xposed on android pie. Please visit
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/please-support-android-pie-9-0-sdk28-t3829625
and

I'm not faulting you for wanting xposed. I was just saying it's silly to buy a flagship, and be aggravated that you can't downgrade.
https://github.com/M66B/XPrivacyLua/blob/master/README.md is a nice one to have, however it's worth waiting for
While I agree that Xposed is such an awesome thing, I have to also agree with others. A device that was never released with that particular version of Android will never have it. Best case would be to wait it out until Xposed pie comes out eventually, and I'm sure by then Android Q will be on this device and you'll be mad that Xposed Q won't be a thing. I personally don't use Xposed anymore because safety net is a priority for me, but yeah, it's a great mod for sure.
We've had xposed on pie for months.

To root or not to root

Hi All
I will be receiving my OnePlus 6T (in thunder purple) this week and wanted to know if there is any benefit to rooting anymore, having read posts about widevine L1-L3 etc
I'd like to install the notification mod, speaker mod and the google camera app, (or anything else that is recommended) however i'm not sure if i can do these without root
I like to tinker with my phones and im pretty clued up with this sort of thing, ive just been out of the scene for a couple of years!
Looking forward to peoples views and comments.
Thanks all

Thanks, how big is the widevine issue once unlocked and rooted?
I use to root, but haven't in the last 3-4 years. The Huawei Mate phones I've used, really didn't need it. Pretty clean, and nothing I really needed to root anyway. Plus, unless you tweak them, I wouldn't be able to use Google pay.
Well, I was happy without root since the Note 5 but since Google is eager to slowly kill off various important apps that used to work without root on Oreo then I was forced to root this 6T since it's running on Pie. I think it's worth it now. I have call recording natively baked into the phone app, I can use Swift once more and I forgot how useful Titanium Backup is. I'm getting ready to try the speaker mod, as well.
Speaker mod seems useless. I root for adblocking without VPN (AdAway), root firewall (AFWall), and themes (Substratum).
I was a crack-flasher from way back and I don't find the need to unlock/root. I'd like Adaway but DNS66 pulls some of it's host files from Adaway.
I stopped rooting about a year or 2 ago with the note 4 and had no plans on it for the 6t but viper4android works perfectly so I rooted just for that. I have adguard for adblocker. As time goes on I might add some modules from magisk but as for now it's great. Titanium back up is always super useful as well.

Thanks guys,
Some mixed feelings there. I’m guessing the speaker mod is not worth the hassle and the ad blocking can be achieved without root (looking at you blokada)
Not read up much on sunstratum, that’ll be my next to do...
Hmmm... decisions, decisions as I don’t want to decide to root 6 months down the line and find out I have to format my device (unlock bootloader)

I personally love my 6t being rooted... I use adaway with Magisk v 18 which now has a Systemless host support in its (magisk)settings for ad blocking.. Substratum engine also works in magisk v 18 mod section. Swift black substratum theme works flawlessly.
Ex Kernel manager is great too.
I'm running ElementalX kernel 3.0.9. which is very smooth.
I updated to OOS 9.0.7. using TWRP fajita 3.2.3-8.
I have the stereo speaker mod also. It's not that impressive, but ok.
Well that's my 2 cents. personally I love this phone so much more now that it's rooted..
Hope this helps your decision.
So is the Widevine such a big issue with root?

If you watch netflix or something else that is using Widevine then yes! this is a big issue. You can always experiment with root and check it yourself. If you will not be happy with root you can always unroot + lock bootloader so all will return to normal.

Will I still be able to use my banking app? Also is there a site that lists what is reliant on widevine?

Thanks guys,
Some mixed feelings there. I’m guessing the speaker mod is not worth the hassle and the ad blocking can be achieved without root (looking at you blokada)
Not read up much on sunstratum, that’ll be my next to do...
Hmmm... decisions, decisions as I don’t want to decide to root 6 months down the line and find out I have to format my device (unlock bootloader)

It's not a hassle at all. So easy on this phone.
Speaker mod is great. I love it.

Unlock the BL and install Magisk.
No real hassle. You can take update locally and reroot.
The very first thing out of the box for my device was unlock the BL and root.

Widevine is not directly related to root but with unlocked bootloader.
No issue with magisk and banking apps except a few that I don't remember of. Google pay works well
sounds like someone reading my threads...there's nothing here that wasn't mentioned in countless other threads. Weigh the pros and cons and make a decision...first time I've gone rootless in years.
OK.. got my handset.. its a beauty
1st thing i have done is Unlocked the bootloader.. so simple!
Will install magisk over the weekend and set phone up properly then. Have other family priorites that have come up to deal with at the moment.
Thanks all. Need to start reading, dont want to flash wrong recovery.

For apps like Blokada, it's always running in the background and uses a VPN. If you use an actual VPN, this means you can't use Blokada while your VPN is running. AdAway just edits the host file. No app running in background, no VPN.
