samsung j5 overheat issues - Samsung Galaxy J5 Questions & Answers

i recently brought my j5 installed twrp then didin't like cm 12.1 then flash 6.0.1 then dicided to go back to my stock rom the problem that the phone overheats so much 40 ° for deep sleep and 50 for normal use
i mention that i installed linaro kernel when i first used twrp
any help ? anyone had that problem before ? :crying::crying::crying::crying:

Hello! I'm the current developer for Samsung Galaxy J5 and want to clarify some things to new users.
Samsung Galaxy J5 heat issues:
- Has a 5.0 inch Super-AMOLED screen, that is the main cause for exceeded battery draining and heat problems.
- Uses 4 cores for proccessing which is another cause of heat issue.
- When we use full brightness on screen, mobile data and gps together, the device reaches its most battery-draining state and its peak in heat production.
- Stock kernel uses performance governor for stock ROMs! That means that your CPU is always at 1.2 GHz.
- Interactive stock governor also uses the range from 800 MHz - 1.2 GHz, so heating issues also occur.
The solution:
- Stick with CyanogenMod 12.1. The development is always active. Even if you don't like it, you will see better performance than stock. AOSP is always the best way to go.
I will post the new updated ROMs soon. (I have updated SM-J500FN today! The other variants will come soon)

my phone runs in stock disabled everp bloatware only installed fb lite with the slightest use the phone goes to 50 very fast
i flashed ur kernel before and cm rom same issues even when i go in twrp the phone is always in 43 - 46 ° do u know what's mostl likely the cause ?
my phone feels like an oven and i tried flashing official firmware but it the same problem i can't find any solution or similar experience to anyone

I faced same problem. Please help me my phone is Samsung galaxy J500F.

i also got the same problem
my j5 is very chill on normal use(like using facebook or browsing in internet using wifi) but it overheats very intensely when using mobile data and it even goes up to 70 degrees
also in using j500h in stock mm with kraken kernel underclocked to 1ghz

Freeze + "rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" sound

My nexus 10 froze two times today ( pretty normal, it usually freezes about 5 times a day) but today, a strange sound came out of it ( "rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" )
I don't know if it were the speakers or if it came from somewhere inside the tablet... I am very disappointed, I sold my transformer tf101 because it froze 3 times in a week, that was already to much for me. Why can't Google just fix it ? Or are they working on a fix ?

Are you on a custom kernel? That sounds similar to the CPU crashing and hanging, thus the repeated noise
try setting your cpu governor to performance if you have a custom rom or kernel. solved the issues with rebooting for me (for the most part)
Well, you have to determine why the tablet is rebooting. If the device is getting noticeably hot and there is a "slideshow" effect then it is a indicator that it is being thermally throttled. Changing the governor won't necessarily fix this and in some cases can exacerbate it.
If you are indeed on a custom kernel, then then the kernel crashed. If its a reoccurring event then I would look at flashing a different kernel (Ktoonz or another) and seeing if that fixes the issue.
I haven't installed a custom kernel or custom rom, I not even rooted. On the left side of the camera ( when holding in landscape) the tablet gets very hot while playing simple games like pudding monsters. Is that normal ? Happens it to anyone else ?

There is currently a theory (tested by members and mostly supported by gathered data found in this thread) that the CPU does not have a temperature sensor and instead estimates temperature based on an equation. According to the member who did some testing, the equation is way off from the actual temperatures. This can cause freezing (due to lag from thermal throttling) which would account for the sound or the random reboots as the temperature equation reaches a critical point and reboots the device.
I would pay attention to the KT Manta kernel thread as there's some interesting research going on over there. I can say having used that kernel from day one, 100 MHz to 1.7 GHz and extremely undervolted I haven't experience a single instance of throttling or rebooting. The only reboots I've had were when I was dialing in my undervolts. I tried messing with the GPU voltage, but mine appears to be somewhat picky and I really couldn't undervolt the GPU much. The CPU on the other hand undervolts like a champ.
However, if the theory that Samsung uses an equation to determine temperature and not an actual sensor, undervolting will have zero effect on "temperature" though it will save battery. Having never encountered thermal throttling (even after significant game play and other activities) I can't speak to that issue. Though I can say that with my undervolt settings, the battery lasts a crazy long time and I have absolutely no performance issues.

[Q] Girlfriends CPU running either full speed or deep sleep, cant find source

My girlfriend has an I337 S4 running rooted MDL rom. Her phone would get hot and battery life was awful compared to my M919 S4.
I installed Bettery Battery Stats and it shows that the phone is either running at full speed or in deep sleep. I changed the governor of the stock kernel and it didn't make much difference. We then installed Ktoonsez kernel (newest version as of a few days ago) and it made no difference. I even tried to underclock and overclock the cpu and it always stays at the maximum setting. I've tried a few task manager applications and they show what is running but nothing uses a high percentage of CPU. Its as if some hidden system process is pegging the CPU all the time.
Does anyone have advice on how to stop this?
It's probably something hidden in the Rom that's making the cpu clocked out all the time. The Rom probably has a built in wake lock app that keeps the cpu running constantly when the screen is locked. Umm, I guess your best guess it to do a factory reset and if that doesn't work go back to the stock software or try a different Rom.

overheat

Hi I'm using redmi 2 prime and I'm on cm13 official ROM I have been facing a lot of overheating issue in stock miui ROM too but why is it happening 2gb ram is more than enough and do anyone know how much temp is harmful for my device I get up to 43 to 45 degree Celsius is it OK ??
That temperatures are not normal, I only get those numbers when all cores are running at maximum speed for some time. If you are getting this numbers on both OSs there must be something in common. Since you are on CM and rooted, you can do some tests.
First, to discard a hardware issue you should use a lower max frequency speed than 1200 MHz, use 800 MHz for some minutes and watch and feel your mobile temperature. I hope this will decrease that heat!
Second, if the heat went away, you should identify what is causing it. Typical heat causes are GPS and 3G/4G usage. Make sure these are off for now and list all those apps you are using on both OSs. Go to battery in settings and uninstall those apps which are consuming the most battery, one by one with maxspeed set to 1200 MHz and watch and feel your temperature.
Notice that recent nightly builds are being reported by users as draining battery too fast. If nothing is helping try an older nightly build, previous to 23rd august. Always do a nandroid backup, before updating your ROM and keep a close eye into official CM13 thread.
If you want a quick advice, do this downgrade first and restore your installed apps from a nandroid backup.
Try this CPU settings using Kernel Adiutor on Interactive Governor [Root Needed]
Can anyone give me the link for 0822 nightly of CM 13 official rom.

Try to flash custom kernel if you want to stay in CM13. Then dowload kernel adiutor to change CPU speed, hotplug and etc. We are here to help

Bought a refurbished Note 4 and it's horribly overclocked, please help

First of all, proof: http://imgur.com/a/vfRc8
As you can see whichever genius refurbished it has done a number on the phone, both CPU and GPU are overclocked. The phone overheats to 90+ celcius when attempting to play games and shuts down. The problem is that with the phone wasn't rooted when I bought it and it was still overclocked for some reason, I don't understand how. I installed custom ROM and kernel (Nameless and H Vitamin) and the problem still exists.
Can you please help me out here? I'm kind of a noob on customizing kernels to change clocking speed and I don't think the phone will last long with these settings. PLEASE help.
It looks like H-vitamin kernel is not installed properly, it still runs on the previous, OCed one. Try flashing RamKernel or Emotion.
Can you please PM me the current kernel boot.img? You can get it by dd command or from recovery by backing up "boot" in TWRP.
The kernel is same one I'm using but your could be a newer version, would be very useful to me.
I wouldn't worry about heat, I'm running 3.07 GHz & 800MHz GPU /w disabled throttling, for using GearVR with PC. It gets so hot it hurts to touch, still no damage after 500+ hours on steamvr but the battery lost some capacity.

Download this app link below.
Open it and give it root access.
From this you can change whatever you want.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bigeyes0x0.trickstermod
The default clock speen of cpu is (300 minimum)and (2649 maximum.)
Gpu clock speen should be minimum 200 and maximum 600
Thank you both very much, I installed RamKernel RC3 and I'll use trickstermod to further downclock the cpu because where I live is preeeetty hot and I worry about the phone. Olex you were right, for some reason H Vitamin wasn't installing properly, I'm uploading the boot backup as I write this and will PM it to you.
Btw even with the new kernel inside air conditioned room the idle temp is 40-45 Celcius. Is this normal?

Exynos Samsung note 4 overheating

Hi guys
I notice my note 4 overheating so bad after I flash a custom rom to it (Lineage 17)
I use hKtweak to check the cpu temp and it never stable at a reasonable temperature (for me, it is around 45 to 60)
The battery temperature is fine tho. Its stable at 40 degree and so but the cpu not fine the device not laging its super smooth even with these heat.
So anyone have any ideas or should I contact to the person who make this Lineage rom. Thanks
If you don't know Vietnamese, Cpu is cpu temp (of course :v) and Pin is the battery temp

after flashing a rom it's normal to have heat, the rom it's building the cache and has many things running
give it a day or two to settle
also
exynos 5433 is well known for its heating issues
so play less games or less time
use it as a phone more than a play station
where did you download the rom?

It got hot during my daily basis.
I only play lightweight games like Geometry Dash but it can still get hot up to 90°c
And here is the link to the rom that I downloaded: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/exynos-unofficial-lineageos-17-1-06-30-2021.3937956/

does the device go in deep sleep? how's the battery?
Exynos 5433 is famous for it's hot behavior, especially if it's not tamed by a good kernel and/or tweaking of the kernel

Ok, I will download BBS and try that
And I always have to disable 4 big cores (core 5,6,7,8)

"install BBS xda edition and leave it running for at least 1 day"
can't really get good info after 3 minutes
how about today, after more than 1 day running?
get screenshots from Partial Wakelocks and Alarms too

Well, thank you for helping me but I found the problem by myself.
I tried to reflash the ROM but no luck. Then I started to disassemble the phone, use some iPhone repair techniques likes replacing detachable module like charging board. And you know what, after I replace the charging module and replace it from my broken Note 4 SM-N910P, the temperature dropped from 60°c down to 45°c
I hope this will help someone in the future
