Recently got a galaxy S7 edge. I've installed all available updates. For some reason I am constantly asked what program to use when I want to open any type of document such as a pdf. I am given a choice of 3 of the stock applications and Adobe PDF which I installed.
When I am presented with the app options there is no "once" or "always" option. Instead when I select one app I get the message that app is now the default app and to change it go to Setting--->applications......blah blah to clear the default app. I have been to the default app under setting and see that PDF are set by default to be open by Adobe PDF. So why must I still select what app to use when I want to open a pdf file (even the same file)? Is my phone corrupted since I am not getting the "just once" or "always"? I want to open pdf full with a single program every time instead of it always asking me.

This was recently changed, As once you selected your app, there was no way to select another application without clearing the defaults (Rather messy and time consuming)
To change the default setting head to:
Settings -> Applications -> Default Applications -> DEFAULT APP SELECTION:
Set Default Apps Automatically (Will auto set the first app you select to default)
Ask Before setting Default App (Brings back the traditional Just Once / Always (Option))
Failing these settings, Maybe one of the application for the PDF wants to be set as default, Try uninstalling them?
Does it happen with any other application?
Download a video and install VLC. select a video app and see if the derault sticks.
Keep in mind, sometimes if you have a default PDF app selected, The app is updated, you will be asked to select again (Some times)
Additionally if you install another PDF application, then the App selection may re-appear (If a default is selected already)
(Sorry if this is abit messy, lack of coffee this morning)
Settings -> Applications -> Default Applications -> DEFAULT APP SELECTION:
Set Default Apps Automatically (Will auto set the first app you select to default)
Ask Before setting Default App (Brings back the traditional Just Once / Always (Option))"
Unfortunately I don't see the "Set Default Apps Automatically" or "Ask Before setting Default App" option in Settings -> Applications -> Default Applications -> DEFAULT APP SELECTION
Seems like that would work great, but they're not there.
I did try to Reset App Preferences however any PDF file I get asked how I want to open it every time. Even under App setting it shows Adobe as the default. I tried reinstalling Adobe but still didn't help. I have a couple documents that I routinely access and it gets to be a pain.
Thanks for the assistance, of you have any other ideas I'm all ears. I'm almost wondering that if I don't have those options you state above than maybe I need a system reset???

I have the 20 Key Touch Dual (nike) and XT9 works great, but depending on what program you are using some applications start in "abc" mode by default. This seems dependant on what feild you are in; Subject feilds like a new calendar item always starts in "abc" mode, where notes and message feilds start in XT9. If you change the settings it will default back next time you open that application. Is there a way to change the default keypress settings to always start in XT9 for all feilds or a way to remember your preference inside each feild.
Anyone have a suggestions/tweak/fix?
Thanks-
Jcostanza4
i also need to fix this it is really annoying
I think you are right and that it's determined by the field or the application. I've noticed that it defaults to "abc" in fields and applications where non-standard (unusual) language is often used; i.e. calendar entries, phone book, connections settings fields, etc.
There must be a workaround though...
Does anyone found a solution to this??
It's really annonying to have to change everytime for having the xt9 enable. I found a sort of shortcut: long press on the button "*/xt9" and then press "1" but you have to do it each time...
Don't we have a good programmer who knows how to make cab to get rid of this??
i tried this, you can change the keyboard to the normal one, non new htc, this it will be of.
Guys it's simple use file explorer and go to Window\xT9Settings and click to launch settings menu there you can check on/off the following:
-Spell Correction
-Next Word Prediction
-Auto Substitution
-Word Completion
-Multitap Word Completion
Don't know why HTC have hidden it in the windows directory!! it should have been placed in the systems menu in any case you can always create shortcut for it in the programs menu.

But the is no option there to disable or enable xT9 in all applications.
I think this is the same issue as being discussed in this thread - maybe they should be merged.
Even though this thread is the 20-key version the way it reads to me we are all looking for the reg key(s) that set the behavior of xT9...

Im not looking to disable the XT9, but to enable it in every feild by default or ABC mode. Right now certain feilds default to ABC or XT9, so knowing which feild defaults to what is always a pain. If I get used to typing in one mode only everything would be smooth.
This is one of the biggest things that is bugging the hell out of me at the moment with this device. Everything else has been smooth, Really hope HTC fix this in the next version with either a user option to enable the mode you want to use. I am pretty sure that a registry edit could also do this.

Hey guys,
I "installed" quickmenu, works great except when I want to go to Settings it states "empty". So I have to "uninstall" to get through the original startmenu to settings.
Does anyone know how I can get to settings with Quickmenu??
That's probably because your windows isn't English. I have the same problem in Polish version.
You can either tap and hold the windows logo (if you haven't disabled this option - i did), so that the classic menu shows up, or go to quickmenu options, then to commands tab. look for an entry named settings, select it and press "Create shortcut". Then place the newly created shortcut in your /windows/menu start/settings (or equivalent path in your language). Now, when you open the steeings section in quichmenu, you'll have only that shortcut in there. When you press it, another menu, this one containing actual settings will pop up.
I like the second way much more, since settings appear in a cascadable menu, not in the standard fullscreen window manner.
or go to /windows/starmenu and create there a folder called "Settings"
you will have then one empty settings folder in you native language and another working one in english
Thanks, works great..
I've put some icons on my Wildfire (Like 500), and I nicely organized them with 5 folders each containing 100, but when I go to the window to change the icon of an application it just shows all of the icons (500), and doesn't show any folders.
Does anyone know how to let my phone display the folders with icons in them instead of loading all of them in one time?

well, i am not much an expert but why dont you try downloading "picturen lite" from market. and then when you change an icon, select picturen lite to complete the action instead of gallery. see if it works....
Download quickpic from the market.
Also, I had another question.
When opening a folder it gave me the choice ''Open with Pictures/OI File Manager''.
I accidentally did ''Remember'' and I wan't to choose the other one now, what do I do?
Menu> settings> applications> manage applications, go to the app that is selected as default and tap clear defaults.
Go to Settings->Applications-> Manage apps-> choose the app you set as default and tap on 'Clear defaults'
Thanks, both of you !
Hi all,
I am using Virtuous Galaxy v1.0.5 ROM on my Acer Iconia A500. And when I went to some websites,I found they were always in mobile mode. I think it's about the Browser's UserAgent.I have ever seen
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=652984
and I have ever rework the file:
/data/data/com.android.browser/shared_prefs/com.android.browser_preferences.xml
but I think it doesn't work. (Maybe I did the above-mentioned step in wrong way)
Can you help me?
And I want to use HTML5 to watch videos. Can I use the Browser with the ROM to do this? Should I change my UserAgent to "IPad"?
P.S.: I'm a Chinese student. Maybe my English has some mistakes. Please accept my apology for the inconvenience this matter have give you.
First, wrong section. All questions should go to the Q&A forum for the Iconia Tab.
Getting down to business, have you tried changing the User Agent String in the stock browser settings to Desktop? It is in settings in the Advanced tab.
First thanks for your advice.I'm stupid.I'll go to the Q&A forum to ask questions.
But I can't Found the UAString Settings in the Advanced tab.
There is my screenshots
………………Oh
Sorry,The website said:"To prevent spam to the forums, ALL new users are not permitted to post outside links in their messages."
So,I cannot show you my screenshots
Maybe,I download a wrong version? I don't know.
What should I do ?
Do you have any other ways to change UA? For example, rework any ",xml" files
Or can you give me your Browser's APK installation package?
what? No one help me?
You should really try what monkeychef said. The option is there. (under pageview or something) set it to desktop.
If you are using the stock browser that came with the tablet then the user settings are not avalible you will have to do the following to dissable the moblie web sites and turn on desktop websites.
1. Open the Android Honeycomb browser on your tablet.
2. In the address bar, type: about:debug and press enter.
3. Now open the browser's settings by tapping the icon in the very top-right corner of your screen (it looks like four horizontal lines) and selecting "Settings" from the drop-down menu that appears.
4. On the left side of the screen, tap the section labeled "Debug."
5. On the right side of the screen, tap the item labeled "UAString," then select "Desktop."
6. Press the back button (in the very bottom-left corner of your screen) to exit the browser's settings.
7. In the browser's address bar, type: about:debug once more; this will disable debugging mode and return the browser to its normal state.
Now on rooted tablets with non stock browsers the setting should be right in the browesers settings page. I know my stock browser does not have them I had to install a third party browser I use dolphin hd.
Hope this helps if so please remeber to click my thanks button.
Really thanks
Actually, in my stock browser, if I go to settings and then Advanced, I've got a "View Mode" option which is by default "Tablet", changing that to "Desktop", changes the useragent to seem like a Desktop.
For example, if you go to facebook normally I would see the mobile page, but changing the setting like above, I see the normal Desktop version of the site.
Hope this helps.
I really like the stock internet browser on the S4 and would like to keep it. However I have not been able to find a way to default the view to desktop. I know it has the tickmark in settings, but I do not like hitting that every time. I have tried about:debug to get the debug menu in the setting and changing the UAString to Desktop, but that does not seem to have any effect and will still default to the mobile site unless you go in and select Desktop View in the menu every time you are on a mobile site.
So has anyone figured out how to make the default browser default to desktop view? If not I am going to have to switch to another browser.
Thanks
