LINUX BOOTS at OPAL! Thanks to linwizard project!

Hi there,
I got Linux to boot at OPAL via linwizard project. Here are steps needed to get it work.
1) download image from:
http://tinderbox.x86.dev.gentoo.org/embedded/linwizard/gizard-20080602.tar.bz2
2) copy content of file to the microSD card
3) edit default txt and replace init=/linuxrc with init=/bin/sh
4) run haret and let it boot.
After a while you'll get to shell. No graphics.
Now you can attach microusb cable and connect it with your linux laptop (I recommend ubuntu)
and you will get usb0 interfece to start up.
Which IP to use to connect with OPAL I still must investigate.

Well ip connectivity now works:

But in this image there doesn't seem to be any telnet/ssh server running. I will try cook image with ssh server support later

I'm a new Opal user and I'm interested in getting *nix running on my device. I still haven't had the chance to mess around with this stuff but I'm excited to see this thread.
I was looking into the possibility of running Android on the Opal and it seems the closest thing is this thread bout running it on the Herald (it uses the same processor as the Opal).
I don't any experience in Linux porting so I thought I'd share this, in case anyone else is interested. And at the same time, I'll try to see if I can get something working based on what has been/is being done for other devices.

Android can boot on Opal
I have some good news, Android can boot on the Opal. This is just a proof of concept as it's missing tons of drivers and is completely useless.
Touchscreen and all keys except for the volume control (and obviously the reset button) are not working. So you basically can't do anything when you run it.
What I tried is the same as what's written in this thread about running Android on Gene. They're using the build made for the Herald/Wing (just as I was proposing in my last post) with customized initramfs and kernel.
You'll find all the necessary details in that thread. However, there's a newer build than the one mentioned there it's wing-linux-0.4pre2.cab. And the suitable kernel for that build is supposed to be the pre2 posted in this post but it didn't work on my Opal so I tried the older Gene kernel and it worked. The main difference between the two is bluetooth support, and that's obviously is of no use for us.
This doesn't effect the Windows rom, nor does it requires any special partitioning. Still it's best to have everything backed up before launching it, just in case.

I'm reading about the next steps but as I said before, I don't have any previous experience or knowledge about this type of things. If someone can give me hand, I would be more than grateful. At any rate, once I have better understanding of the concept I'll contact the people behind the Wing and the Gene ports.
P.S: If you do try to run this, keep in mind that this will take lots of time, specially for the first launch. And when you get an error saying something like "android sh: can't access tty" just ignore it and keep waiting. After a while you'll have a flashing "android" on the screen, and after some more waiting you'll reach the main screen.

I'm going through the Gene port thread here and on the Wing-linux sourceforge forums but I'm still a bit overwhelmed.
I would appreciate any help as I'm completely new to porting. I have some programming and linux knowledge but never attempted this type of things.

Hmmm...
Right. Lets do it the way I did it.
1. Get the touchscreen working. Through HaRET, you must have got the GPIO interrupt whenever you pressed the touchscreen. You must have got two numbers corresponding to each press - a smaller number and a bigger number. The smaller number is the GPIO, and the larger number is, well, lets say a special GPIO value for the same pin.
Now checkout the Gene branch through git.
Goto /wing-linux/kernel/arch/arm/mach-omap1/board-htcherald.c
Scroll down to a block of code where you'll see the touchscreen code. Enter the smaller number in the .dav_gpio statement, and the IRQ number in the OMAP_GPIO_IRQ() statement below.
2. Follow the Kernel build instructions on the development section of the wing-linux wiki (the two make commands)
Copy the zImage into the linux folder on your SD card
Boot into wing-linux. The touchscreen should start working.
3. Now, hopefully, after the touchscreen's working, You would essentially just require two more buttons - the home button and the back button for minimum functionality. Everything else can be worked on by the touchscreen.
Then follow the instructions on the wing-linux forum (Page 2) to get the KEY(row,col) values of the keys on your handset. Hopefully you should get atleast a couple. Note down the corresponding keys and their KEY(r,c) values output.
4. Fire up board-htcherald.c again and goto the place where you have the KEY(r,c,KEY_blah) thing and replace the codes as per your obtained KEY(r,c,KEY_blah) values (The Home button is the one commented as Left Button)
5. That's all I can help you with as of now. I'm also figuring out a stable way of getting the DPad and the center select key to work, but It'll take some time.

(This guy right here is the one who fixed the kernel for Gene, I asked him for some pointers).
I don't want to take my device apart just yet (I usually do my best not take to dismantle anything that I haven't owned for at least 3 months unless absolutely necessary) and I couldn't find a place that states what touchscreen it uses. I'm just hoping that it's the same a tsc2046 as well. [Is there anyone without a warranty and/or willing to check for us?]
I'm gonna double check the values I got from the touchscreen as for some reason I seem to have to IRQ values, probably forgot to get rid of some spamming irq. And, at the same time, I'm currently setting up a VM as a building environment, my main boot is Intrepid 64 and there's no 'psyco' package for 64 machines.
If anyone else have some experience and wants to try this, refer to: http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/HaRET_20Documentation (using haret to get the GPIO and IRQ values needed).

Oh no. dont tell me that you are building the entire thing. all you need to do is build the KERNEL! Please! Don't go into building the whole thing from scratch. Use the make ARCH ARM commands given on that page.

I'm not gonna build the complete thing. Seems like I got too exited and failed to notice that building the kernel only requires a cross-compile toolchain, te rest is for compiling the whole thing.

Its pretty normal

Weird.
I've only changed the two touchscreen values and built the kenrel. It finished without any error but now it won't boot.
It gets stuck, even before the space allocation part, with this error: "sh: can't access tty; job control turned off". And then it displays a prompt.
I'll try modifying an older build, I'm pulling them from the repos at the moment.
After all, the pre2 kernel from Gene didn't boot on my device (although it got stuck later on).

Try doing a clean install - Remove the linux folder and try again.
Also, make sure that you're not forgetting to checkout the Gene branch.

Is your default.txt modified? And have you downloaded the modified initramfs.cpio?
check in the Gene forums for that.

Already tried the clean install, no dice. The default.txt is untouched and I'm using the modified intramfs. What happened this time is different from what happens using the original one, it's not asking me to specify the partition size but instead it's waiting for a command. I could probably ssh via usb but I have no clue how that might help.
And I've already checked out the Gene branch from the beginning.
I've tried compiling the kernel for pre1 (after changing the screen values) from SVN and it did boot (both using the cabs for pre1 and pre2) but no touch screen yet. All in all, I'm guessing that there's too much hardware difference here.
And the button for lowering volumes didn't work either, it seems like whatever you changed for getting it to work on Gene is the same as what we need here, but I'll think about that later.
I only have two ideas left:
- Trying to go back to a more stable build (with lesser features and lesser possibilities for errors). Maybe 0.3.
- Trying to create some kind of hybrid kernel using this alongside the HTC Vogue build as it probably has closer hardware to the Opal (obviously, I'm talking about everything beside the MSM7500 400MHz processor that it has). I'm hoping it won't get to this cause I'm definitely under qualified for that at the time being.

What happened this time is different from what happens using the original one, it's not asking me to specify the partition size but instead it's waiting for a command.

A friend borrowed my digital camera, I tried my laptop's webcam but the text it too blurry. Couldn't fix it using gimp either. So here's exactly what's showing on the screen:

Using the original zImage (from the pre2 cab) it's right around here that the screen clears and the Wing Linux installation script kicks in.

I meant it as just a temporary test to till the cause of the incompatibility is figured out. With less things that could go wrong, it'll be easier to locate the ones that are going wrong.

Android on SD setup

I received my HD2 yesterday and have spent most of lastnight and today reading thru the threads and other sites.. but i have used this forum in the past for my other phones and know i can find good links and tutorials here..
I found plenty of Android setup links and NAND information.. but i want to setup a dual boot. I have found that there are differnet ways to do this, one is installing Android on the SD and being able to just open the OS from my windows file manager. Then there is another method that allows you to select the OS when you boot up your phone.
Do both ways require me to flash the phone? Or is there a method to accomplish the dual boot without any mods to the windows OS portion? I am fine with running the Android OS from my file manager as i just want to get a feel for the OS and decide in the future what my main OS will be..
If there is a sticky thread that has all the steps for both methods that will be perfect, as most everything i read were just other threads other members have started. Also, what are the latest most stable files available today for this?

Well so whats the problem? you already know the answer. Just download and setup AOSP on mSD and run it though file manager or do it via bootloader for RAM version. In your case I would SUGGEST you go flash your stock rom to custom rom if you want to heavily use it if not you can use custom WM rom specially designed for AOSP with alot of functions removed.
So go with dualboot WM6.5X(NAND) + AOSP(mSD) and see how you like the flavor before you switch to AOSP fully via NAND.

At the moment, the only real dual booting is available via Magldr, with WP7 on NAND and Android on SD. If you're not looking to try WP7 then forget about that. You just need to look into getting Android running from SD, booting from WM6.5, which is the way we were all doing it before Magldr and NAND builds came along.
All the info you need is in the HD2 Android SD Dev forum, and it's a lot simpler to get going than a NAND version, as it involves nothing but copying files and running a couple of exe in WM. You can then get a "bootloader" for WM that offers the choice of running Windows Mobile, or Android. (This isn't really a bootloader, as it's a Windows Mobile app, so Windows Mobile is already running. When you select to run Android, it dumps WM from the memory and loads Android instead. It's a bit of a blag to call it a bootloader!)

Linux Distro dev edition

This distro was created with all the tools needed for android development. After you install this os, you're ready to start developing for Android.
GreenRom Dev Kt is now available. It has Android SDK/NDK, Eclipse, ADB(from any location!), ThemerStudio, all required dependencies for compiling roms, repo init for pulling source code from github, and Gimp for theming/editing graphics.
Q:Why is this important?
A:Because all you need to do is install this OS, plug in your phone, and begin having fun as you dev. There's no need to try and download and install ANYTHING for Android development because it's all been done for you. Do you need to run ADB Logcat? Go ahead. Now there's no need to make sure you're in a certain directory because you can run ADB from anywhere.
Some common questions might be:
Q:Do I have to install GRPdevkit to my HDD?
A:No, you can run it from live mode and store your progress on a pen drive. Alternately, you can install it on a pen/usb drive and run it from that if your bios detects usb drives.
Q:Will I be able to install this alongside another OS?
A:Possibly, although LivLogik and I haven't had any luck with dual booting this nor Ubuntu.
Q:Will this screw up my computer?
A:As with any Linux OS that's experimental, the possibility is there, although LivLogik and I have been testing this OS extensively to ensure all the bugs have been work out before making it available to you. Nevertheless, we are in no way responsible for your actions!
Q:What if I don't want to dev and just want to use this for an every day system?
A:That's quite fine as this OS is built from Linux Mint 11 and has all the stuff you probably use such as Brasero, X-Chat, Transmission, Libre Office, Movie Player, Calculator, Pidgin, G-Thumb, and much more!
Q:What if I can't burn an installation disk?
A:As with the majority of mainstream Linux Distros, we will be offering an installation disk for a small fee + s&h. LivLogik and I have to come up with a design for the cd decal as I have access to a cd printer. We will post the availability when we come up with it.
Q:How do I use the tools that are in this?
A:There is a get started guide on the desktop that you can move to your home folder or delete that explains briefly how to use the tools, however, I didn't include instructions on Eclipse as I've never used it. For Eclipse just go to it's website here: http://eclipsetutorial.sourceforge.net/totalbeginner.html and learn how to use it. Eclipse is used to make programs for Android.
LivLogik will be making a video so that you can see it in action. Enjoy!!

**EDIT** if you have problems signing in to gtalk on the messanger... go to software manager and in the search box type in gtalk and download that plugin and it should work and if you have problems with anymore accounts like facebook do the same and it should work fine -Fixed in update

how was the download speed? The server will be getting a make-over tomorrow and should beef up the download speed.

I'm assuming I can make this into a persistent usb and take it anywhere and work on it? Regardless I'm going to give it a shot.

DL started at 700 and dropped 1kB/s every 2 seconds continuously, then dropped out. I thought it was an artifact of the averaging done by Google Chrome; except it was linear, 2 seconds every time.

The server went down for a little bit. They beefed up the server speeds so it should download faster now. It should be up and running now

Great.. now I have to stop & get more DVDs. My old laptop doesn't boot from usb. Looking forward to trying it out. Thanks!

I wasn't having any luck dual booting Linux Mint or Ubuntu. I have Windows 7 Ultra that I wanted to dual boot but couldn't get it worked out and just gave up since I have to have Linux for most of the development I do.

Dino-mite? Faq said run live and store on usb. Assumption was run live from dvd. Second part of answer was run from usb if BIOS allowed it. You should be able to install on a usb pen drive and save your files on a dedicated partition. Just make sure you have enough room on your pen drive. Look here: Link and see the requirements for doing so. I've never actually installed on a pen drive myself but theoretically speaking it's plausible. Let me know if it works out for you.

Will do thanx for the reply. I know how to set up a persistent live distro but some of them are tricky. I like this idea because all I need is the flash drive to do work on any computer.

LuneOS (webOS Ports)

Webos Ports has released Open webOS for Touchpad and now has new name of LuneOS.
This be another OS for our touchpad
Warning its still early Alpha. I hope it also get some supports

I have data reset my Touchpad and installed android Kitkat via the great Touchpad Toolbox by jcsullins. I like to dual boot between android and LuneOS
The difficult part is to do step 1. of install with no webOS. installed. I have tried but have limited knowledge of android / linux file systems
1. Create an ext3fs lvm partition of at least 1GB (use Tailor or Meta-Doctor to achieve this). It must be named ext3fs ! Tailor automatically uses this name for an ext3 partition.
If some dev or android guru's could help by creating a android app or script to create ext3fs partition and allow it to be mounted. (maybe another option for Touchpad Toolbox)
LuneOS is based on android kernel/drivers and even list android version in settings / about.
The future plan is to be able to install on any rooted android device. Currently installs on Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (2012), and Touchpad.

You could always use the touchpad toolbox to reinstall webos then follow the instructions there…

I tried it and was lot of work for create one partition, I corrupted my webos boot and the lune.OS image had bug of no WiFi connection.(webos Ports were quick to update new image that worked). Had to data reset and start again. After seeing that lune.OS is android based has to be a easier way for us who now only have android. I don't plan to go back to webos as apps are loosing there support and browser so outdated. Line.OS is using modern browser engine, so even not many apps should be able to use websites apps.

I think atm its a very major WIP, and as such installation etc is for the very hardy lol.
Once more development has taken place then it will become easier to install and use.
Btw, think maybe this thread should be in a different forum?

If you try to do something like this, just knowing what are the partition space and name value you need instead for android /data/media and the luna webOS port and you might be able to do something.
General Idea :
#1 : Using the recovery from the link, make the partition you need for luna and make a single partition of android which is the media store line, don't do the other line if you don't need it, they are legacy dual boot value.
#2 : Untar your installing file, you might want to refer to the old Arch Linux installer or Ubuntu Installer, they are pretty easy to code.
#3 : Boot Toolbox and install your android.
I hope for you this Luna WebOS port don't use the old media partition from Android non data/media because it will be a pain to get enough space for each partition to share between the 2 OS.
Edit : Ok, so you really need WebOS... Ok, just follow the full tutorial from the link or use the toolbox by following the onscreen tutorial (toolbox's the better option). I was thinking it was something like the Ubuntu Touch install or other Linux.

You may be able to set Lune OS and Android on the same /data/media and then set permissions in each OS to only allow each respected OS read its own "sdcard".

There are 2 types of luneOS images, one Dev and one non Dev, Dev has a lot of inbuilt logging for developers.

[SCRIPT] [WIN-10] WSL 1/2 Utility for Windows 10 x64

Hello People. This is basically a combination of batch scripts made by me to make WSL less daunting for people who do not want to do Powershell things and introduce MANY more people to Linux [and make existing dual boot Linux users just stick to Windows w/o the ugly GRUB].
Disclaimer: Only you know what you're doing. I have tested everything on me and my friend's PC and it seems to work fine. If your PC catches fire or starts an apocalypse it's not my fault. So yeah be careful about what you're doing.
Things the scripts can do:
1) Enable WSL 2 in any Windows 10 2004 computer. [NEW: Older versions of windows 10 are now supported.]
2) Download all the available distros with a couple key presses.
3) Automatically detects the downloaded distro and installs it without any user input.
Downloads are attached in the thread and instructions are given in the zip file.
How to know which zip to download (1 or 2) [Don't Skip]:
1) Go to the start menu.
2) Type "Run" and press enter
3) Then type there "winver" and press enter.
4) If you see 2004 there, ONLY THEN are you able to download the WSL-2 zip. Otherwise update your Windows or use the WSL-1 zip.
Note to self: Things to do in the future--
1) Make a GUI of sorts.
2) Anything else the people want.

Just have to. Say thanks had this opFeat installed since maybe it was first available in the list and never researched how. To. Use it or. What it really did. Just gotta find out if this will run fine on my surface too (anything except liveOS off usb will work and causes windows to eff up despite grub/4win/stock/grub if it works excites to use kali on there properly}

You're very welcome but I would be happy if the thanks button was pressed Also, it should work fine on any Windows 10 computer [remember I am using a Haswell computer and it still works]. I also have Kali working but it does not support Monitor Mode and Packet Injection just yet [Microsoft does not want to implement this feature due to security concerns]. You can also get a GUI up and running with ONLY kali using Win-Kex [look it up]

Our PC system has been attacked by a ransomewhere virus, called as .lisp file virus and our files has been encrypted to .lisp sub-extension. Any technical advice?
