Wifi "connected, but no internet" message - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey i had a question regarding using wifi at airports and hotels, with roms like pure nexus etc i always have an issue connecting to wifi at airports and hotels and have to turn on dhcp clients under dev settings, after that also it's broken and wifi show "connected but no internet" message. Anyone here who travels a lot and uses wifi at such places ? i'm a pilot so this thing is really important for me. Looking for a rom where this issue isn't present preferably some someone who has been using wifi at airports and hotels regularly. Also when i reverted to stock after unrooting it i'm facing no issues now, but i can't stand the stock rom lol. Thanks in advance.

I had the same issue on the previous two builds of Pure Nexus but when I toggled DHCP Client in Developer Options I was able to connect to airport/hotel wifi and use it too. I didn't have the "Connected, No Internet" afterwards. I carry a USB-OTG drive with a ton of different ROM's and Kernels on it. When this happened to me last week while running the latest version of Pure Nexus, I wiped everything and restored a backup of of AOSiP 4.4 and I didn't have this issue at all. I also restored a backup of the stock MOB30M and it was not present as well. AOSiP 4.4 is the only custom ROM I tried while I was at the airport and my hotel. I haven't had a chance to work on the issue with Pure Nexus again.

Give it a shot. It's worth it if it works for you. I have been at home for the last week so I haven't had a chance to try any other ROM's to see if the issue persists. AOSiP 4.4 was just the only one I tried during that time frame. Hope it works for you too.
If you want to try AOSiP 4.5 here is the link below:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24651429356503310
AOSiP 4.4 is here:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24588232905720427
I also use Banks GAPPS and have never had any issues. AOSiP is a really nice ROM in my opinion. Lots of customization, good looks and stable with their kernel or any other kernel I have tested with. I personally use B1RCKB1RD Kernel with every ROM.
Good luck and happy flashing. As always, make a backup before hand in TWRP or make sure you have one saved somewhere just in case some goes awry.

defy, cm10 and isyncr wifi

anyone else use this combo ? isyncr works on the phone via usb cable, cant get the wifi version to work. any tips ?
Yep
Having the same problem with CM10 and iSyncr. Only works over USB cable, not over wifi. Had the same problem in CM9. iSyncr Wifi hasn't worked since CM7. If anyone has a solution I would be grateful.
Moved to Q&A. Please post all questions there.

I'm having the same issue. After exchanging a couple of emails with their support the problem continues unresolved (and with no clue onto how) even in their latest version
I managed to sync via wifi (pc version) once every few dozen tries, but my last successful attempt was almost a month ago
RUnning CM jellybean and I can't get it to work via wifi or USB - really kind of annoying. and thier tech support is non existant. no matter stock rom or any other rom, nothing works.

After more emails exchanged with one of the devs, I made a lot of tests (trying do get the app to work on a number of combinations of ROMs/OS and and detailed it to them. If this will ever make the app work properly I can only hope
On a possibly related issue, anyone here that reposted this problem with isyncr also have a bug were the wifi disconnects after every few Mbs downloaded (either via file download, app updates, normal navigation, youtube, etc) and the wifi icon is still displayed as if it was connected, and mobile network doesn't kick in if it was turned on beforehand?
Because this is also a wifi related bug that a only very few users reported on the CM and MIUI JB threads. Could it be a bug in a specific stock ROM kernel used as base? What SBF file did you flash (or where is your phone from, in case you didn't flash a Different SBF)? My had a Brazilian retail SBF

Don't hold your breath, I went through this exercise over a 3 week period for the developers to just tell me there was nothing they could do about it, so I gave up using this product altogether.
did this ever get resolved ? still doesnt appear to work for me
Nope. As far as I managed to communicate with developers, they couldn't figure it out, and CM10 users seem not do stumble upon this bug (plus an uncommon combination of Device+ROM+app) very often, so it's a bug that gets no attention
iSyncr is working with latest CM10! I don't know for how many builds since it's been a while I last tried to use it, but I can sync music via wifi now

[Q] Package File is Invalid - No mentioned fixes working for me

I got my Nexus 4 today, and I've been pretty excited since.. So far, it's worked flawlessly everywhere except for when I need to download something from the play store.
Almost every download results in "Package File is Invalid"
I googled for hours, literally. I wiped data/cache of Google Play Store, Services Framework, wiped Cache from the stock recovery, and even factory resetted the phone to no avail.
I'm guessing it's a problem with my home's router setting. Everything works fine on my nexus except for the play store. Haven't gotten a chance to mess with other wifis yet, but can anyone tell me a way of fixing it?
If it doesn't work by tomorrow, I might run a custom ROM and try, though I really wanna stick with stock till 4.3/5.0 comes out :\
Any help?
Login to the Playstore from a PC and make sure your N4 is listed on your account. Also, try and install an app on your phone from there.
What happens if you try to install an app with Wi-Fi off (Mobile Data)? This could rule out an issue with your router or ISP.

It works fine on 3G for me. It's not a ROM issue since I tried it on stock, PA, and now CM10.1.
However, very small apps download without issues. I think the cap is around 5 mb above which the error shows up.
I'm 100% sure it's my router's settings that seem to be working against the nexus. Any idea what I could do?
I absolutely LOVE the fluidity of this phone (coming from a single core phone running a buggy JB rom) but this is killing me!!
The worst thing is, all the workarounds that I've read about since yesterday work for few, but not all people. And there are lots of workarounds. I've tried all that I've read but nothing's working :\

What router (Make / Model) is it?
Check for a router firmware update. If there are no updates or support, check if it is supported by DD-WRT.
Try doing a factory reset on the router, then set the security settings to (WPA2 only / AES only) and use the Android app WiFi Analyzer to find the best channel.

It's a DLink router.. No updates available
I reset it yesterday and put WPA2 but it hasn't solved the problem still :\
Wifi analyzer told me channel 6 onwards were good, so I tried 6 and 7 but didn't help either
I've had to download apk's for all the free apps to make it work as of now
I'll check with my mom and dad's phone to see if this problem exists for them too, but they're running gingerbread so idk if it'll mean much even if it works

First I would return to stock ROM. A custom ROM could have it's own WiFi issues.
As for the router, the only other suggestions I can make are;
test it in unsecured mode (open Wi-Fi access)
force 802.11G (disable B and N access)
lower the MTU from 1500 to 1480
disable uPnP
disable (or enable) WMM support.
disable any content filtering (like blocking java, proxies, etc).
Changing these options one at a time and see if any one fixes your issue.
Use VPN
Has been occurring a lot lately. Well, not a fancy fix but a simple one ..... use hotspot shield to connect and then all files install normally over wifi. Don't know why it does, but it works!
I have had "package file is invalid" issues with my Nexus 4 and my home WiFi connection from day 1 of owning a Nexus 4. I have tested it on 4 different WiFi Routers with different firmwares including stock and DD-WRT.
- Linksys WRT320N Dual Band (With Stock and DD-WRT Firmware).
- Linksys WRT160N V3. (Stock and DD-WRT)
- Tenda N60. (Stock "2012-12-12 V1.0.0.16_EN" and newer variants).
- ASUS RT-N66U "Dark Knight".
Tested 2.4ghz and 5ghz, varrious combinations of WEP,WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA2-AES. It makes no difference the ONLY router from the above 4 that works correctly when downloading over WiFi from the Play Store is the Tenda N60 using the early release stock firmware "2012-12-12 V1.0.0.16_EN" that the router is shipped with. Even with the Tenda N60 if yuo upgrade the firmware to newer releases of stock firmware it will cause the issue to return.
Now this is an issue specific to the Nexus 4, I also have a Nexus 7, Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC Desire, Huawei Ascend G300. None of these devices have this issue using any of the router or firmware revisions. i.e: I can download from Google Play over the same WiFi connection with no problems.
I have had my Nexus 4 swapped for a replacment and the issue remains. So I've come to the conclusion that it's defintiely device specific the Nexus 4 has something inherently wrong with it..whether it's WiFi Drivers, Android Kernel, WiFi Chipset I dont know.
It doesnt affect all WiFi conenctions I can use my WiFi connectiona t work and the issue doesnt occur. It's strange that the cheapest router of the 4 I ahve tested i.e: The Tenda N60 is the only one that works consitently, I have never seen the "package file is invalid" issue using this router and Tenda firmware "2012-12-12 V1.0.0.16_EN".
This basically rules out any ISP, or WiFi security settingas as I used the same SSID, Security types and Network Key on the Tenda as the other 3 routers..
Poor show by Google, they obviously dont care about fixing this issue.
So your router having an issue is a Google problem? Well done coming to that conclusion...
For what it's worth, I have no such issues with my home router (Thomson) or my work WiFi network (no idea what router we have here but it's probably a Linksys/Cisco jobby)

Ermm...you might want to read that last post again, 4 different routers from different manufactuirers with different WiFi Chipsets (Linksys x 2, Tenda, ASUS) tested with stock and 3rd party firmwares all exhibit the same issue with the Nexus 4. Where as NO other android device or any other WiFi device on my network including a Nexus 7 with the same version android version as my Nexus 4 (4.2.2 ), connected via the same routers have any issues, even side by side downloading the same app from the Play store at the same time the others will suceed the Nexus 4 will fail the download "package file is invlalid" which sounds like a data corrption issue.
Co-incdecne thats it's only the Nexus 4 that has these issues ? I highly doubt 4 different routers are all faulty...especially since it's only the Nexus 4 that has this issue.
If you check the google code pages you'll find several other people complaining of the same issue.

All I'm saying is the 2 routers I use most have no issues and neither does the one my parents, my local pub or any of my friends. Might be a UK thing, I don't know, but I've never had a problem on WiFi at all...

I agree with that, maybe it's even a particular hardware batch of N4's, not sure. I can use my N4 fine on my work WiFi and other locations. Like I said it does work on my home WiFi if I use The Tenda N60 router with it's early release stock firmware, any firmware upgrades cause the problem to return though. But it cant be right that you should have to use a specific router and specific firmware which you cant upgrade without breaking the N4.
I've got another support case open with Google Play which they've apparently passed to their techs, lets see what they come back with... I have heard of someone with this issue using a custom ROM with a different Kernel to the Google stock build which includes newer Qualcomm Prima WiFi drivers (Paranoid Android) , they claim this fixes the issue for them.
Im relectant to flash a custom ROM and void warranty though for a basic feature that should work out of the box though.
I tried a lot of different things but nothing seems to have worked sadly.. I'm gonna update my ROM tomorrow to CM10RC4 and see if that helps, though I doubt it's the ROM's fault. Btw, I had the same issue with the stock ROM too
I've been having this problem whenever my portable wifi device connects to a slow mobile network. All my friends connect to my hotspot, but only my Nexus 4 gets the "Package file is invalid." error. For months, I've had to contend with switching to mobile data just to finish my downloads.
My only conclusion is that the Nexus 4 has a problem with slow connections over wifi by corrupting the data transmitted. It's fine when using mobile data.
Check this out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2300873
It requires the phone to be rooted. I'm already testing it out now.
I cant verify 100% yet but my Nexus 4 took the Android 4.3 OTA update yesterday. I have since tried several WiFi downloads over WiFI from the Google Play store and not a single one has failed !
So my intitial thoughts are that the Android 4.3 update has recolved this issue..and it was indeed a bug/fault in the previous versions maybe it's the new kernel, Qualcomm Prima WiFi drivers, New Google Play app... But whatever it is. It seems to have fixed the issue. Well done Google about time too !
The only down point is the denial of any issue their end from Google Play staff and blatant lies they tell customers about not knowing about such bugs.

Ironically, the 4.3 update on my Nexus 4 yesterday actually seemed to trigger the Package File is Invalid error, as it wasn't a problem before. MX Player and Jetpack Joyride are triggering this for me atm. Anyone else still have this on Android 4.3?

Having the same issues on all of my devices, but only while trying to download on my home wi-fi. Like the OP said, anything over 5mb won't download. Droid Razr M, Droid Razr HD, Note 10.1, Tab 2 10.1, and Nexus 7 (running 4.3), I cannot figure out what changed on my Belkin router (AC900) to cause this to happen suddenly. It was just noticed last night, and I have spent hours today trying to find a fix, and creating more problems to fix. If anyone has any step by step instructions of how to fix this, please explain to me like you would a 6 year old. BTW, rooting is not an option of all of these devices, so please make it a root free option. And I have cleared all caches/datas and done all the force stops recommended, as well as removed the google accounts and readded them.

[Q] Wifi tether not working, breaks wifi altogether

So I've searched all around these forums and I've yet to find someone who has the same situation as me. So I recently got a brand new Nexus 4 on T-Mobile, and right now it has CM 10.2-20131011-NIGHTLY-mako ROM installed. Although I am on a prepaid no-tether plan, I am able to tether anyway through USB or Bluetooth with no limitations (tested through a Mac and other mobile devices). However, whenever I try to tether through Wifi, in the "Tethering & portable hotspot" menu in Settings, when I try to check "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot", it turns on for a second, then turns back off (unchecked) and says "error" under portable wi-fi hotspot. It doesn't allow me to try to turn it on again because the option becomes greyed out and unselectable. Also, my wifi refuses to turn back on, like the phone still thinks it's tethering. The only fix to my wifi is a simple reboot and everything's back to normal.
TL;DR, Tethering works except through wifi, and attempting wifi tethering breaks wifi altogether. Any fixes/solutions?

Which AOSP-based ROM would you prefer? I don't prefer stock compared to the amount of customization one can get from these various ROMs out there. Is AOKP or Paranoid Android AOSP-based?

I did a clean wipe and flashed back to the Oct. 2 nightly CM 10.2 and wifi tethering works, then when I flashed the latest nightly wifi tethering was broken again. I've come to the conclusion that maybe it's just the recent nightly build and the CM team hasn't fixed it yet.

[FIX][Cm12/12.1] Wifi Connectivity Issues/Drops

Usually i switch on WiFi and disable mobile data manually while at home. It turns out that i don't receive any Push Notifications like WhatsApp, Threema, Facebook and GMail/Inbox (those who are using gcm) when the device is connected to WiFi solely and the screen is locked. If i unlock the device after a certain amount of time, a bunch of notifications are popping up. This is reproducable and won't occur on mobile data. Just do the following, while i.e. at home:
Connect to WiFi
Deactivate your Mobile Data
Lock your screen and let your Device rest for a couple of seconds
Tell someone to send you a Mail to your Gmail Account (or on any other GCM-Push related way)
You probably may notice that your device won't wake up to notify you about this incoming message until you pick it up and unlock it. I have tested this since weeks with multiple official nightlies of CM12, custom builds and even unofficial CM12.1 builds, they all show the same behaviour. Even with official CM11s this issue persists, but can be worked around by unchecking "WiFi Optimizations" in advanced WiFi-Settings. Unfortunately Lollipop doesn't have this WiFi Optimization trigger anymore. Ofc "Keep WiFi on during sleep" is set to "always". After all tests i came to the conclusion that the device simply gets no wakelock trigger from notifications if connected to WiFi solely. I've fixed this for me by fiddeling with the configuration files (root needed).
Open /system/etc/wifi/WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini and change
Code:
hostNSOffload=0
to
Code:
hostNSOffload=1
After this change and a reboot, your device should be able to wake up from incoming notifications instantly while on WiFi. Some custom ROM, like SlimSaber have set this out of the box, while official cm nightlies and other custom ROM, like exodus, haven't.

Usually i've disabled ivp6, because of the known problems with it. I've tested it with ipv6 enabled and it worked.
Meanwhile i was able to test a lil bit more on other networks. It seems like this all is router dependant. While having the chance to exessively using another WiFi network yesterday, i was able to check that there are no such problems as described before. After went home, problems reappeared. I have to conclude that there must be some culprit with my router at least (Telekom Speedport W724V).
I noticed such notification flood several times.
I can't say under which circumstances because I didn't care about it yet but your post made me remember this.
I gonna investigate that asap.
As far as I can say this happened only at home yet. My router is an AVM FritzBox 7390.
On my OPO I have usually always one of the newest official CM12 nightlies installed.
I've tested stock settings while connected to a completely different router a few days ago and wasn't able to reproduce the issue. It really turns out that it has something to do with certain routers, in my case a Speedport W724V Type A (by Huawei). It seems like this issues has something to do with ARP Offloading and filtering of Broadcast/Multicast. As far as i understand, Androids MAC Adress isn't hard coded and the router loses the connection to the device if it goes into sleep state. Therefore the router has to broadcast via arp to look for the device, but the device simply doesn't respond to the arp request, coz the wifi driver is configured to ignore that broadcasts and continue sleeping. This issue is, as i read, present since KitKat where it could at least be worked around by disabling the WiFi Optimizations, which seems to be only a checkbox for above mentioned manual method Lollipop.
Currently i've no idea how to fix this in a better way, since my described method works flawlessly, but it's definately a lil battery drainer. Another way to work around this is by setting "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" to "never" and let the device handover the data connection to mobile data while sleeping. This, at least, ensures the battery savings which were intended by the developers.
Steve Kondik merged an interesting commit today, which i am not aware of if this will change anything related to this issue. As this commit was merged into cm12.1 branch i doubt that we will see anything related in cm12 based roms, nor the upcoming cm12s. Maybe some nifty dev like @ak or @Lord Boeffla can take a look into this and implement it into their kernel.
I put the interesting commit into my cm12.1 kernel, which comes out tomorrow.
If all goes well I can look to back port it to cm12 and maybe even cm11(s).
Let's see. First we need opinions on the test kernel tomorrow.

It fixed my wifi bug so far on euphoria 5.1
Okay guys, i've tried AK's latest experimental kernel (v203). Beside of some small problems which are still under developement, WiFi seems to be fixed completely with the implementation of the new prima drivers for me. This could mean, that they will be automatically fixed with the release of the official cm12.1 nightlies. As for now i will thank everyone, especially @ak and @Lord Boeffla for participating and help to hunt down and solve this annoying issue. You're great guys :good:

Thanks. With the latest beta kernel for cm12.1 which I released this morning, these drivers are also included.
If they turn out to work better - my other kernel variants (cm11s, cm11, cm12) are also already ready with these new drivers backported. Just have not released them as I want to give it some more testing.

Anyone else notice the same issue on Oxygen Os? I'm not sure if it's just the router I connect to at work, since this doesn't happen at home. Can't tell yet, will give this a shot.

Would be an interesting test.
We cannot look into the driver used for Oxygen OS as the kernel code is not yet released as far as I know (if it is, I would be happily be corrected )
Andi
I'll bet that oxygen suffers of the same problems as every cm12 build does (even if it's more aosp) and CyanogenOS 12 (CM12s) will also.

Let's see.
I backported the new drivers to CM12, CM11s and CM11 already.
Just need to decide whether I ship that or not

Just to report back, this did seem to fix my wifi issues, although I've since switched to Exodus, so I didn't have a ton of time to play with it.
Thanks for taking the time to investigate this issue. I should have done the same I will ago when it started bothering me.
I will try one of the kernels and see if it fixes it. If not I'll try your method once I am back home.
Thanks!

You're welcome. I have to admit that the problem reappeared. So the new Wi-Fi drivers have no permanent solution for me. As told in the other thread I found my temporary solution by simply let Wi-Fi auto turn off when device for to sleep. My data plan allows me this easily, but if you're on a 200mb data plan this could be ****ty for you. Let's see if future commits of cm will change anything.
I fortunately have a 3gb lte contract, so this shouldn't be the issue. I just don't want to accept that there might not be a solution without tradeoffs.
I'll let you know if I find anything

Would be nice. I'm hunting this issue down since January, so far, as said, without any real solution other than using another router. it works anywhere except at home, so i know exactly how annoying this is. It's not that big problem to use mobile data when screen is off, but is pisses me off, if i just forget this sometimes and miss urgend messages from WhatsApp or Threema, coz they're arriving hours later. As desribed above, there is a way to prevent the OnePlus to not filter the WiFi Broadcasts. You just have to edit this one line in the configuration manually, but it comes at the cost of battery.

Wifi is unusable on android 10

Hi, I have a problem with mi redmi note 7 (lavender)
the problem is that the wifi gets disconnected at some distance (something normal from redmi note 7) the real problem is that it doesn't reconnect, even if i have the router with me, in the lower area of the wifi it shows the message "saved" i try to forget the network and reset the password but i still can't connect, I have to restart the phone to be able to connect normally, but after a while the problem returns.
I'm using a custom rom called AOSIP with android 10, I have already used pixel experience, Crdroid, Evolution x, Havoc os and absolutely, all have the same problem. I want to make it clear that I have already used android 10 on my redmi note 7 (pixel experience) and I didn't have any problems, the problem started after the February updates this year.
I don't think it's a hardware problem because going back to miui or a custom rom with android 9 solves the problem.
I would like to know if you already know about this subject or if you are already working on it or if there is a solution.
thanks

I think you might be onto something. In my case, the problem has been with Wifi Tethering. The phone is basically unusable as a hotspot, cutting out frequently and randomly and I think this has something to do with your wifi problem, maybe a driver issue? Like yourself, I've tried several aosp roms, all have the same problem.
Do you recall the last Pixel Experience release without this wifi issue? I am considering rolling back...

Good morning, I've already tried the most recent version of pixel experience, in fact the AOSIP rom is from May 17, 2020, practically yesterday.
Obviously it's a driver problem, but I don't understand why all custom roms have the same problem and I don't know how to solve it either (in android 10)

Could you tell me what rom are you currently using?
Could you also tell me the release date of the rom?

Currently on StagOS May 11 build. I settled on that after trying Pixel Ex, Evolution, etc as it was the one with the least hotspot issues; which isn't saying much as tethered devices would randomly lose internet connection while the phone clearly had internet and you could browse on any browser on the phone.
Since you say the issue occurred for you after the February updates, maybe you could point me to the last stable build you used so I can roll back.

I recommend all the versions that are from February, I would like to use pixel experience from that date but the page only has recent versions.
if you want a specific version use Crdroid 20200209
crdroid if you keep your old versions in the cloud so I recommend it, but I can not guarantee that it is totally stable. Pixel experience if stable but they don't have the versions of those dates.

I would like you to install the most recent version of pixel experience and when configuring the wifi, you will move away from the router until the signal goes away and try to connect again, just to check if it is really my phone or not.
Obviously making a backup before and also doing all this is optional. If you don't want to do it there is no problem thanks.

I already tried StagOs, I still have the same problem with the wifi, I also tried the hotspot and as you say if there is a data problem and in general it is unstable.
I downloaded the latest version of pixel experience and as expected the wifi was still failing, but the hotspot was working correctly so you can install it without any problem.

Okay sorry for the delay, been busy experimenting. Your recommendation of the Feb 09 crdroid build was spot on, flashed it, wifi and hotspot works like a dream, no issues at all.
After confirming that I decided to take a backup and try a recent AOSP build. I had already tried the Pixel Ex May 11 build and had the same issues so I downloaded the most recent build of Evolution X (May 17) and flashed.
So far, (Fingers crossed) I have not been able to replicate your WiFi issues or my tethering issues. WiFi did not disconnect even at a distance of over 50ft from the router. Keep in mind that these connection issues occur randomly but there's been nothing so far.
I will continue to use this build and test for the rest of the day. If I experience any dropouts I will restore to the stable crdroid build. Maybe you should try the newest evolution or go back to the stable crdroid to test if the issues are software related or specific to your device.
At this point I've been testing the latest build of Evolution (May 17) for about half a day, and zero problems so far, very stable.
I recommend you try it, may fix your wifi issues.

I am very happy that I found a solution to your problem, then I made some tests by creating an access point with my sister's phone ( xiaomi mi a1 ) and I performed the distance test and my phone connected normally. After several tests I am reaching a preliminary conclusion that there is an incompatibility with my router, I would need more tests with another router to conclude that my router is practically obsolete. That would also explain why I haven't found another thread with this same problem
good luck, tell me if you have finally solved your problem
