Someone had mention this to me so I figure I ask. Selling my S3 in order to get either an S4 or HTC One. I love the ONE but ifix just said its impossible to repair. Feel like I am force to get an S4 because of its generous and gorgeous features over a very nice looking phone like the HTC ONE.
Do you guys believe is worth getting Exynos over the Snapdragon and sacrificing LTE?
I'm on TMOBIL so ideally I would love to have the latest and greatest but at the same time I would like the LTE feature. What are your thoughts on it?
I wish the video recorder had a wide angle like the HTC One and even the S3.

There will be Exynos OctaCore with LTE
like S III QuadCore with LTE
however Samsung confirm it for some regions like S.Korea
So u can buy it and enjoy
:good:
Samsung said 70% of the first 10 million galaxy S4 will be S600 proc because of some problems in Exynos production ...
Roms were interchangeable between all the American snapdragon S4 with a few tweaks by devs.
Most likely it will be the same case with all the sd600 Roms. So development will be easier.

Wel if we looked at the the locations of SD600 launches we can see that SD600 is going to places where a larger portion of the developers are. In fact almost the whole of europe is getting the SD600. Not to mention the possibility of US also using SD600. So we are looking at a significant difference in user proportions and developer support tend to also follow the trend linearly.

In a short answer is yes it will be more popular as 70% is getting quadcore.

70% of the population is getting the Snapdragon, and many of the developers who worked with Exynos in the past got sick of it and are absolutely not getting another Exynos device, and most of us are ditching Samsung overall.
I only know of one developer (AndreiLux) who is confirmed to be getting an Exynos variant so far.
Didn't CM say that they would not support Exynos processors? That should say something in itself.

No... You need to read more carefully. CM never makes general decisions as a whole to support/not support a given device (except when a device simply needs to be dropped - the last time that happened was with ICS and Snapdragon S1 series chips because their GPUs are too weak to pass the Android CTS for ICS and later. Tegra2 devices had a close call due to lacking NEON support but they're still in for now.)
That said, none of the Exynos4 maintainer team are picking up any GS4s (we're so pissed at Samsung we're not even getting the Qcom variants, but this doesn't really matter as far as CM on those devices - see below).
Some of the Qualcomm GS3 maintainer team will be picking up Qualcomm GS4s.
So Qualcomm-based GS4s have had maintainers with direct experience with its predecessor express interest in picking up the device. CM support on the AT&T and T-Mobile variants is highly likely, CM support on international Qualcomm GS4s doesn't have a maintainer that has expressed interest yet, but differences from the AT&T/T-Mo variants should be minimal (if anything - see t0lte, one device repo is supporting international Note 2 LTE, AT&T LTE, and T-Mobile LTE versions.)
Exynos-based GS4s have had no one with prior maintainer experience express interest in the device so far. Will someone attempt it? Almost surely. Will they succeed and get it to a point where it will get M and stable builds? In my PERSONAL opinion, highly unlikely unless Samsung changes their attitude with regards to documentation.

Who knows. The CDMA guys are always in their own land. I'm not sure if sbrissen did any work with the Qcom-based GS3s.
I think some of the guys who do work on d2vzw and d2spr are semi-interested, however, at least some of them are questioning whether they can justify a device purchase already, and most of them are (like myself) not fans of user donations.
There's also the fact that with each iteration, Samsung is getting much better at locking down Verizon devices. Don't count on this next iteration getting cracked rapidly.

It is a real pain to deal with when you don't have proper documentation to work with. Add in the fact that Samsung flat out lied to devs and you have why they are willing to leave the OEM. To be honest I think in the end most devs will end up on the nexus so they don't have to deal with closed source BS from the OEMs. How many cores the device has is not really a problem as it doesn't effect alot. I have had both of the S3 and they run the same. Mix in the fact that the extra 4 cores won't do anything for performance and android is not really able to take advantage of them. Muti level threading on android is still not up to par for anything other then a dual core device.

Thats an interesting point, to where are the majority of the Developers moving to do you know? I've actually just got the HTC One but i'm really tempted to get the S4, as i've come across a few speed bumps that for me are a bit annoying.

To answer the question about the S4, i would say that until the octa is widely available (probably later on this year, like they did with the LTE version of the S3) it's safe to say that development for the snapdragon is going to be vastly superior in comparison.
Even if they bring out the Octa to the masses, chances are development will be so far ahead with the snapdragon then it'll be pointless getting it.

Wont matter as Samsung refuses to release proper documentation on any Exynos chip. So even if every samsung had the same chip development would be slow going.
Hi Everyone,
I just took delivery of my new S4 Exynos (Octa) and am surprised how few custom ROMS are out there for this device.
I had an S3 and so I'm kinda used to being spoilt for choice when it came to custom ROMS.
Any ideas why there's but a few for the Octa? Is it because of the chipset?
I saw Cyanogen have said they nt going to release any ROMS for the Octa
device is relatively new, exynos always gave headaches to devs of CM.....
give it time, some people said its not worth upgrading from an s3 so... yeah less custom ROMs
Really its a bitter truth...9500 has only 2 or 3 Devs till now with no update and fixes in lias 2 or 3 weeks ..that section seems like ghost busted :
9505 too has not as many Devs as HTC One has...however it has quite good dev support
I think after so many issues in s4 Devs are skipping it [probably] for note 3
lets wait and see in the near future if the outcome is bad, its hammer time !

To be clear - CM rarely says that a given device will NEVER be supported. The last time we did that was with the Snapdragon S1 and CM9 - That hardware was simply too weak to support ICS and later.
However, all of the CM maintainers that have worked with past Exynos variants refuse to touch it, and anyone else with maintainer experience saw what we went through with Exynos4 and also seem to be avoiding it.
There is always the possibility that someone new will pick things up - but honestly, I consider the likelihood to be very slim.
So CM support for the "Octa" is POSSIBLE - but it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY. I think that AndreiLux was the only experienced low-level (kernels, platform bringup) developer to touch the "Octa", and he's not particularly happy with it so far.

Other than the CCI fiasco I'm relatively fine with the phone. I expected and was prepared to bring MP to the device but I guess that's not happening.
As for CM, I think it's more of a problem of lack of interest than actual technical feasibility. I'd happily dwell into the device platform world if I had time but that's not happening anytime soon as I have a backlog of features in the kernel space to do and finish.

No CM support does not equal to no dev support just to be clear. There are top.devs here ( Indie and Wanam) and there most likely be more devs to join the party. It is however a surprise that there's only a few Roms for this device at the moment.

Well because most of the S4 users have the Snapdragon variant. As for CM, as Entropy said, its most probably not going to come out for our device, even if it does, it'll be broken and unusable due to lack of source code/documentation, etc. As for the custom ROMs, we'll have more of them but the best one IMO - Android Revolution HD - is very unlikely for our device.
The Octa is such a great phone yet the support seems to be lacking a little, I mean my Huawei U8800 had more development going on than this phone.
I dont get why alot of people are saying the Octa is crap compared to the S600 when the Octa beats the S600 in every benchmark I've seen.
Is the S600 an easier design to build custom ROMS for?
I have tried Doc Barebones ROM and Wanams Lite ROM. Both work well on the Octa but I found Docs ROM to the give me the highest Antutu scores, always above 30000 with the highest being 30890. Wanam's ROM didn't yield much more than the stock ROM, around 28300, same with the Omega v4 ROM.
I'm back to on the stock firmware, with bloatware removed, for now. having tried those three ROMS I'm itching to try another but alas I cant find any :crying:

Damn!
I read some where that Samsung might release the source code for the exynos. Is this true?
And if they did would that make it any easie rto develop ROMS for the Octa?
Just simply harder to develop anything for Exynos, i think.
I'd like to remind everyone that developers spend their own time and money on development.
Basically, unless the developer has a strong interest in a device he will not feel obliged to 'hack' features such as camera, noise canceling and so on.
I miss the old days of the HD2
I hope we can get CM on the 9500 because it will open the door for AOKP and Paranoid-Android and possibly MIUI.
Good luck to the developers.
RIP on i9500 haha just joking ... @AndreiLux are u giving up on i9500 ? oh please dont
As Entropy512 said, the problem is mostly because Exynos has terrible source code support. There are a lot of precompiled modules in the source, and these are tied to the Android version that the source code is for. This means that when a new version of Android comes out, you're stuck waiting for Samsung to catch up.
What the devs (like Entropy) have been trying to do is to create open-source versions of these modules, so that they're not reliant on Samsung. This has been extremely frustrating for them, requiring a lot of work for very little gain.
What would be ideal is for Samsung to provide source code and documentation for these precompiled modules. They're promised to do this several times, but so far have only delivered some code that only works for a reference board, not for the hardware configurations that any of their phones use. Even worse, the source code that is available is based on Gingerbread, and has numerous hacks applied to allow it to work with ICS. In short, it's just broken and will not work.
Qualcomm (Snapdragon), on the other hand, provide very good developer support. They and Texas Instruments (OMAP) have a very good reputation with the devs, with lots of source code and documentation available. That's why Snapdragon and OMAP phones are among the first to be supported when new versions of AOSP/AOKP/CM come out.
The I9500 may do better in the benchmarks than the I9505, but that's one of the few advantages it has.
Sent from my GT-I9505
I am not really interested in anything else but AOSP / CM on this phone. We badly need it.. I think we need to build the force on Twitter so that we can bombard their twitter account (@SamsungExynos) and force them to release at least some sorta source for Exynos.
I already started tweeting them like hell. Yes, they do reply with kind of SAFE sided replies..

If they did it would make the world of difference and Exynos would be on a level playing field in development terms as the likes of Snapdragon. Unfortunately, Samsung have been saying that since the original Galaxy S and it still hasn't happened, and it's clear they never intended to release anything and it was nothing more than lip service in an attempt to sell more handsets by appearing developer friendly. It's broken promises like this which has made reputable developers wash their hands with the Exynos chipset and any phones that use it. Unfortunately, this leaves people with the I9500 in a bit of a predicament if they're not fond of TW as it's likely to be their only option for the foreseeable, if not full stop.

I hope the devs will soon turn off their hibernation mode and get on track. We know this isn't their job, but they can do it! Our devs are the best!!

It's because you got a ****ty device with a ****ty chip and no documentation on the chip. Same story with the S5, S6, S6edge etc. Exynos sucks. So it's 10 times harder to develop a rom for you device.

I've read Exynos has better battery life by a margin than the Snapdragon counterpart.
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_gal...ife_both_exynos_and_snapdragon-blog-17325.php
Exynos also is better at RAM managing itself
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=233f0ewFWGk
In Benchmarks though, the Snapdragon 820 blazes ahead than the 8890
and last thing, its Bootload unlocked and can be rooted right now
in simple words exynos is better in battery life and performance (speed) then Snapdragon 820.
i think exynos 8890 got code released????
I am currently owning the Galaxy S6 but I really want to sell it and buy the s7 just because i want to use microsdcards again and whatherproofness is also very cool for me
so something what i really care about is development for the device wich i will buy...
i am pritty sure that the Qualcomm S7 will get Cm builds maybe also official builds but i live in germany where the Qualcomm variant is not sold. so i will need to stick with the exynos version.
the galaxy s6 also has CM aviable with its exynos processor... since now all Galaxy S (exynos) devices got cm in any time:
- Galaxy S2
- Galaxy S3
- Galaxy S4 exynos
- Galaxy S5 exynos (very buggy build tho)
- Galaxy S6
what do u think about cm on Galaxy S7
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/how-to/developer-discussion-custom-kernels-t3338351
No custom kernel thus far.
BTW, S2~6 are official builds?
From what I gather, Samsung has nearly zero motivation to contribute to open source and custom roms, unlike Motorola, Sony, HTC, etc. Which makes it kinda hard for devs to support their phones.
If you have an inside contact at Samsung, by all means let them know.
It has been discussed on so many topics already... CM (or any aosp type of rom for that matter) is pretty much impossible on the Exynos, even if someone gets something to boot, it will always be super broken and full of bugs. As for the Snapdragon variant.. CM should be very possible I guess but the problem is, it seems like every variant that comes with the snapdragon cpu has their bootloaders locked to hell... so... Until someone figures out a way to unlock the bootloaders... No luck there either. If your reason for buying an S7 is development and AOSP projects... I suggest you buy some other phone.

the fact ist that they have said the same for galaxy s3 exynos and galaxy s6 exynos
both have pritty much stable builds.
i am using aosp or cm roms only when the phone gets outdated and getting no update from samsung.
so this isnt that important to me

the galaxy s3 has very good dev support this is clear...

no it's not usable, sorry. even 2D graphics are broken in it. Unless Samsung has a change of heart and releases the full source for Exynos phones, forget it. And Samsung having is a change of heart is never gonna happen since almost all their customers don't care about root/custom Roms. The only hope is someone figuring out how to unlock the bootloaders on the Qualcomm variants

This is the problem every year with Samsung phones. It is not Samsung Mobile division that does not release the Exynos sources, there are other divisions of Samsung which will simply not allow the Exynos sources to be released (for newer devices)

Best bet would be someone found a hack on Snapdragons to root the phones and then install custom ROM.
For Exynos I think we can safely say goodbyes. Anything else is wishful thinking. Sorry to say that but I think that's true. (or you can start a 100-day hunger strike in front of the Samsung HQ and see how it goes.)

Mi5 doesn't have microSD card and uses Type-C cables.
Not to mention that the radio firmware is probably bugged by the Chinese government.

It has 128 GB internal storage and Type C cables thats an plus in my book.
I have this feeling where i really just like sansumg's phones hardware and in special it's new look, but then is the fact that my S5(exynos) still stuck in 5.0 bugged as hell rom and there still no 6.0. The Qualcomm counter part have great CM support but there still nothing for the S7.
I will probably have to get either a nexus(2016) or a Huawei p9 which looks really nice too, also I'm thinking about the HTC 10 mmm.
