Good morning/afternoon everyone! So this is my first dive into rooting and have successfully rooted my Nexus 6p. Today I received an OTA update and was wondering if it were safe to update with root, and if not, how to go about doing it if possible. I do not have any roms or anything else like that. Just a simple rooted 6p. Sorry for the extremely basic/noob question. Also thanks in advanced for any help/info!

Using the default way, you won't be able to update. During the OTA installation it will detect that device has system modifications, and will fail to install.
The best and most effective workaround for that is by manually flashing the OTA zip using FlashFire app (Search Google Play Store).
You can grab the OTA files from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/ref-nexus-6p-stock-ota-urls-t3213781

One more quick question. After install, flashfire detected an OTA update and asked if I wanted to proceed. Is it safe to allow it to or should I just do it all manually?

If it did, then go with it. If not sure, then there's no problems in giving a few taps to do it manually.

Try this:
1) Complete unroot from SuperSU app settings.
2) Reboot
3) Try flashing with FlashFire again.

Yes, just re-flash the SuperSU zip. More information about this specific warning message is listed here by Chainfire himself.
Regarding FlashFire, as I understand, I can
...flash trwp with Adobe
...flash super su
...install FlashFire
...from now on flash incremental ota using FlashFire (no need to use adb)
Correct?

Sorry, I just dragged the logic out of my answer. If you unroot, you will not be able to us FlashFire, since it works on the basis of root permissions.
The correct information is here: https://plus.google.com/+Chainfire/posts/Q7YYVPwv8Fx
The most common way to by-pass that warning message, is to just continue and flash the update. Make sure that you have taken a backup of your current setup.

i guess i have the same problem as you. It is downloading, at least it says so in the system update menu, but i can't see progress. But i figured that might be caused because i rooted after the kitkat ota.
So is it possible to download the ota if someone posts it here and flash it via cwm without losing root?

I don't have root to pull the update from cache since my display has issues that I plan on getting a warranty replacement for

I agree. Memory management is significantly better than it was. No more Chromecast apps getting closed while running in the background. Still running it through the paced, but it looks much better.
Did any of you have TWRP installed prior to updating? If so, what did you do to get back to stock recovery? I received the update this morning, but can't install it because I have TWRP installed on my XT1063 variant.

Thanks for the reply! But is there a simpler way? Maybe a way to flash it via fastboot? Because root doesn't seem to play too well with my device. Keeps getting bootlooped and i know it's supposed to bootloop with the recent versions of SuperSU but it just doesn't wanna boot up.
Assuming the modified boot image for Root on 22.11.6 will not work with the update, and also assuming the boot.img will be overwritten with the update..loosing Root..
So we will be at the mercy of someone compiling a new boot.img.?

I found that flashing SuperSU caused a bootloop as well and was about to give up. But then I did it one last time and wiped cache in TWRP after flashing it. That time it worked!
The method I linked to get stock recovery back requires root.
If you can find a download of stock recovery from some random website, you can flash stock recovery through fastboot with fastboot flash recovery nameoffile.img

Even if you update, you should be able to Odin back to the root file...as you can odin back to the original official tar. The update only adds wifi calling and some smaller fixes.

Oops, just read more carefully, you don't know where it is. I have pulled them before, but don't remember where. It's not the obvious places like "Download". I think it was in a cache folder. Use a root explorer and look around in the system folder.

I'm pretty sure it is downloaded to the system folder somewhere (cache maybe?). Without root, you'll never get to it.
I figured as much but it seemed like people were interested having non rooted people look.
It's odd cause this is the first non rooted phone I've ever had. I'm holding out to see if we get the boot loader unlocked and custom roms. If not I'm going to skip root this time around.

I'm in the same boat. I need my Gear S to work and it doesn't with the rooted rom we have now.
I'm surprisingly happy with it unrooted. I did buy Adguard, because I can't stand ads. Other than that, all good. If my plan didn't include HotSpot, it might be a different story.
Saw many post from new users and senior members as well and most of the time there are lot of confusion on the OTA part, especially for the rooted phone. Few says it gets (I am one of them) and few says it doesn’t as rooting capabilities modifies the system boot.img and also we have unlocked bootloader so device wont get the OTAs. I have been using the Huawei/Honor phones for 2 years now and have been getting all the OTAs on rooted phone and confirmed the same many time but still there are lot of confusion and users thinks they wont get OTA on rooted phone.
Just confirming here that you will receive OTAs on rooted phone without any issues. This is 2nd update on my phone since rooted in past 2 months.

If you are rooted but then rolled back to stock recovery, just download the OTA and update.
If you are rooted with TWRP recovery, flash the stock recovery first and then download the OTA to update. (TWRP wont be able to update OTA)

Yes it will need stock recovery
If I go back to stock recovery what happens to all my apps and settings that need root?
What's the best way to backup, flash stock, update then restore?
PS I'm coming from a iPhone.
Thanks,
Chris

It will remain intact. No data loss. Well Chris, i can confirm on the OTA part but you never know the unforeseen consequences. I mean can run into trouble sometimes as Huawei/Honor phones are prone to brick in seconds. I would say to not update in such scenarios.
