Android OS taking heaps of battery - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, just got a new N6P. Aside from my screen, Android OS is rivaling its power usage. How do i stop this?

Are you on Stock MM 6.0.1 August or on Nougat Preview 5?

Try doing a factory reset
That will erase your internal storage, back it up.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

@JustPlayingHard I have similar problem.
Got new phone last week, flased manually August OTA and now at night I get 20% discharge in 6h, see attachments.
Don't understand what's going on: shall I hard reset as well?

Do a factory reset, back up any important data and look for rogue apps.
EDIT: Disable WiFi when you're are not connect to an AP. That seems to be the issue.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

But at night I am connected with my AP.
Have exact same settings and apps as my previous S6 Edge+ and that one had no such problem.
Thing is without root I am not able to further investigate.
I have no local data so no need to back up: will do a factory reset and restore from Google backup.

Did you turn off location scanning?
Disable location scanning
1. Go to Settings - Location
2. Click on three dot menu, select 'Scanning'.
3. Turn off both Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning
Disable Location History (in case u don't use it)
1. Go to Settings - Location - Google Location History
2. Turn off the one under 'This device'

Location scanning is already off, history is on but was on also on S6 without problems.
Actually if you have a look at screenshots to me it seems that phone is indeed in doze for 6h or not?

Talked to some other guys with the latest MM on stock no root, same problems. Android OS is eating heaps of battery other than screen.

I've got poor signal strength at my work place, thats causing my poor battery life too right? But then a couple of wake locks too.

Mobile signal is a big cause of battery drain sadly
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

Mobile Signal affect the battery significant, for me my telco at certain area has really poor quality (why i said quality is because the signal has full bar, but the data could not even load), then the phone modem will goes warm as all apps keep on trying to connect cause the signal indicator is full.
The best way to found out is before u sleep, you put your device on airplane mode, then turn on and connect to WIFI, and check the battery left in the morning. Mostly Phone idle and Cell standby in the battery stat is caused by the cell signal.
--
If somehow you decided to root your device, consider to download NapTime as it force your device to goes Doze asap when your device screen off. Remember to tick the disable motion detection if you had ambient display activated.

When does Google usually release OTAs? It's an annoying bug with android OS when you don't know what's sucking your battery down.

Try making sure your WiFi is off by going to Settings->Wifi->Menu Button->Advanced-> Disable Always allow Scanning(4.3 only)

This was already turned off me, and I also have been experiencing battery drain after updating. Google services and screen..It's annoying
Check to see for Wakelocks you may have some apps keeping your phone awake.
I recommend either betterbattery stats or wake lock detector. Both available on the market. Let that run over the course of a day then check to see if you have any high number of wakelocks caused by any apps.
Also see whether you have location reporting on or off in the Google settings app. Location can sometimes hammer with wakelocks.
It's probably one of the apps you have installed, I never have any battery problems with 4.3

Doesn't the wake lock stop the phone from going into Deep Sleep? Mine seem to sleep just fine but ever since I upgraded to 4.3 it drains almost 40% over night. With Wifi and BT turned off it's only about 3%. the 'always allow scanning' option is turned off.
Is the Mobile Data on? Do u have a Exchange account added? Because I see the issue is because of the Mobile data always trying to download or upload something. I disabled the exchange account and it started working fine. But that just a workaround.

Thanks.....I do have two Exchange accounts and without Wifi and mobile data things are much better. I think I'll delete and re-create the accounts on the phone.
I've noticed bigger battery consumption too, idle and with screen on. I even did a factory reset but to no avail. I definitely used to get much longer screen-on time than before, such a shame.
Check your battery! My battery life started to decrease not long after moving to 4.3, thought it was the ROM but turns out I had one of those faulty batteries.

Definitely WiFi for me. On Mobile data it drains 2% in 8 hrs and on with WiFi on it drains about 35% or so.

Hi.
To make sure WIFI is not using up yr battery, check google play store settings and uncheck updates through wifi. and u might also want to uncheck software updates through wifi in settings/about device/software updates.
Next is open Google Settings app, go to Android Device manager and uncheck "Remotely Locate This Device".
Another thing to point out is to uncheck "notification reminder" in settings/accessibility/notification reminder.
This was the big culprit for me for the 100% screen awake on my device...
Cheers..

Thanks for the suggestion. I've done all of that but my Wifi battery drain remains. I even disabled active sync altogether but still screwed. Either I disable Wifi or the battery drains overnight.

Have u tried re-installing yr firmware again?
What custom roms and kernels are u using?
Since the day I installed 4.3 knox-free version, i have no WIFI drain issues apart from the '100% screen awake'.
I'm using MJ5, all google-related connectitvity turned off, I'm having 2 and half days of battery life.
Deep sleep is between 92%-96% all the time.

I did reinstall the firmware a few times actuallybut in the end I fixed it with a reset. I reset my phone (from the settings) then gone into recovery and formatted cache and data from there as well and the drain was gone. Must have been something in the old settings coming across from 4.2.2. Pain in the A*** but at least it worked. Lase night I upgraded to MK8 (DBT so MK8 radio as well) without a reset and there is no drain.

[Q] Location Service Auto Off Itself, Help!

Hello whoever may lend a helping hand,
I've got a problem with my Note 4 Location services. Whenever i set it to on mode, it will somehow automatically switch off by itself over time. I've tried many ways to stop this from happening but to no avail. I dont see any programs or app that is turning my location off for me.
The reason i would prefer it to be switched on is because im using google "keep" and alerts are normally based on location. If my location keeps turning off, google is not able to notify me of reminders when im at certain locations.
Does anyone have similar problems?

Running into the exact same issue. Very annoying
When you exit Ultra Power Saving mode, Location Services is not switched back on. It's a glitch that will probably be sorted out in a future update.

No way around it unfortunately. Just remember to turn Location back on after you disable Power Saving.

Hey, i have the exact same issue. Without using power savings mode or any tasker apps, my location services randomly turns off. It is extremely annoying
Have you found a fix yet?
This is related with the other device having the same user but different settings
Sent from my SM-N910C using XDA Free mobile app
Make sure it's set on "High accuracy" mode. I know you're most likely have it on "High accuracy" mode, but just make sure. Maybe a stupid suggestion but oh well.
Same problem
Location services keep turning off.
Phone goes to no service every day or two ( tried turning off lte) has to reboot to fix.
Mobile data and WiFi seems to also turn on and off randomly.
Reception is poor vs my s3 and s5.
All in all this phone is shaping up to be disappointing.
Samsung has a no swap out policy in SA so they are prepared for me to take it in to get fixed. Last time that happened it took 3 weeks to get my phone back.
I'm convinced it's the carriers branded software pre loaded that causes trouble. Vodacom (Vodafone)
The location services bug only seems to have started a few weeks ago after an update.
I thought it was related to the places feature and I've tried to disable it but can't find how to do it.
Just got my Note 4 a few weeks ago and I'm seeing this happen too. Bump to see if anyone has any solutions!
I'm on Rogers in Canada, running stock, unrooted, baseband version N910W8VLU1ANJ3, build number KTU84P. I do not use Power Saving mode (some have said that location services don't turn back on after exiting Ultra Power Saving). Seems to happen regardless of battery life (just turned off on the way to work in the morning with full battery).
I really only noticed because I tried using a location based profile in Tasker using AutoLocation, and it kept notifying me that location services were turned off. It also affects a weather/clock widget. No other Tasker profiles that would affect it.
Anybody have any ideas why this is happening? Any ideas for fixes?
UPDATE: So yesterday afternoon I booted into recovery and did a wipe data/factory reset. Everything seems to be holding so far in terms of Location Services staying on. Might have just been a glitch or something. I'll report back if they turn off again.

i have the same problem my location services turns itself off even though my power saving mode is disabled. Time and time again i have to turn back on the location services . Please help .
I have a S5 and everytime I leave the house my location services turns off by itself. I can't explain it cause I literally use my phone for calling/texting and games. I don't mess with apps, setting, configurations, or power saving mode. But the really weird thing is that if it doesn't shut itself off completely it says I'm in a different location all together. Help please!

Battery drain after lollipop update

So recently I updated to 5.0.1 but I realized that I got big battery drain issue. I looked into the Option --> Battery and noticed that my phone has always been awake. Also, even if I turned off Location, I can still see GoogleLocationService running under Running Apps/Google Services.
And now the phone also tries to identify the caller ID. I think this was a Google Now feature, where do I turn off this? Also why is my Backup account greyed out?
Thanks.
Turn off WiFi and Mobile Data when screen off. It's save battery for almost 2x. This is bug on Lollipop.

So you cannot receive messages from IM apps and you cannot sync any of your accounts, basically negating the purpose of a "smart"phone. You, sir, are a genius.
And please stop blaming lollipop for every bug you come across. I'm getting the same battery life I got on KK.

WIFI turns on and off constantly

when turning my wifi off it seems it goes into some weird loop of turning on and off constantly by itself, it doesn't seem to be trying to connect just flipping the wifi switch on and off none stop.
noticed it because i had a huge battery daring overnight and while trying to fix it i saw the switch going off and on all the time.
when turning it back on it seems to connect normally .
did a network setting rest but it did nothing ...
I'm guessing a factory rest will fix the problem but I'm hoping to avoid such a overkill solution :crying:
does anyone else had this problem and can help me fix it?
thanx!

original samsung rom.
just happened (i have the device for a a while everything was fine) its the android system that drains the battery in the battery status.
when i leave the wifi on it stops and works fine ...
Have you turned off ''Keep Wifi During Sleep''? I know this can drain battery.
It's not so easy to troubleshoot on an orginal none rooted phone.
You can try clearing dalvik and cache.
Turn it off and then on holding power and vol down button, then clear cach/dalvik and restart.
Try uninstall update beaming service for samsung then restart
If still persistent try uninstall update microsoft onedrive and skype then restart, just in case
I found it after factory reset (forgot internal data backup :crying and update all apps, this problem occuring after the last 3 updates (beaming, onedrive, & skype) which more suspect beaming service update make that problem
Your not alone
You're not the only one who suffer from this exact problem, on Friday or Saturday the same problem started occurring with my phone too, WiFi turns on and off in a loop and huge battery drain!
I saw an increase of 6% of battery drain per hour, so I ended up on 9% total drain every hour. :crying:
I have original Samsung Rom and phone worked prefect until now, no settings or apps installed before this happened either.
What rom version are you guys on?
I'm having the same issue. However, I'm on PhoenixX Rom. Major battery killer and has only just started happening within the past few days.
Since my phone has been unplugged, 3 hours ago, looking at BetterBatteryStats, It is showing com.google.android.gms as having quite a LOT of wakeups. 40 per hour (everything else is about 2). Don't know if this is normal as I don't remember it before the Wifi issue.
Looking into what the wake ups are caused from, Location and heartbeat were the major culprits. So i have turned of WIFI scanning when not on and also the body sensors for Google Play. We shall see.

its not a fix at all . it dosnt scan for wifi , just turning it on and off non stop.
like pressing the light switch agin and agin
I had this after installing "GoodLock" software from Samsung! Uninstalled and everything is ok
same here, just noticed I wasnt on Wifi and the switch is just flicking on and off by itself. Standard S7 with all the updates installed
Been struggling with the same for some days (4 - 5) I haven't been able to get exactly whats triggering this. I'm on stock rom with root. I've reinstalled firmware clean again and re downloaded my apps but it is still happening randomly. Some times after a few attempts to switch wifi on (even when it is toggling by itself) it manages to keep on. Sometimes restarting makes it work again. One thing I'm almost certain its that this usually happens after I turn wifi OFF and then try to turn it back on.
It's been crazy and the phone starts to overheat after a while off this on-off loop.
Any ideas?
its very wierd it started to all of us in the past few days-weeks . seems like samsung has a bug they need to hurry up and fix.
AT&T just pushed out the October Security update for the S7 family, I'm guessing something that came along with it is creating the problem.
mine did a software update last week and I've been away in airplane mode so it could have started then. I've just disabled scanning and that seems to have got round the issue and I'm now connected to WifI
I'm not sure whether it is a Samsung Issue or a Third party one... It is true that something recently affected all of us, but as far as I know, it could be a third party app that wasn't well developed for our phone.
I've noticed the same problem on my phone and it's also only started up in the last few days. On stock Sammy rom, unrooted. Will be monitoring this thread to see if the experts here can narrow down the culprit.
I had the same issue and I was able to stop the toggle by turning off the wifi scanning in Location - Improve Accuracy - WiFi scanning. It's a fix for now. I think it may be an app that may have been updates that is persistently looking for location updates.

wifi problem when screen off

Hello
The wifi goes off after 4 to 5 minutes when the screen goes into standby.
Spotify, sidesync, ... cuts
Even the ping no longer responds
If the screen remains on permanently or the phone is charging, no problem.
In the settings, the wifi is always activated
No battery power
Testing on several Internet networks
Has anyone ever had a problem?
thank you

Same issue here. Noticed it happening some time in November.
SM-G935F, stock, on DTM firmware. I can say that the issue started after receiving DTM OTA for G935FXXU1BPJK in Novemeber, and has continued after receiving DTM OTA for G935FXXU1BPLL a few weeks ago.

Been there, Done that, Doesn't matter... I've gone in and reset that setting at least a couple dozen times, to no effect. I've also tried rebooting into recovery and clearing cache before and/or after resetting WiFi Sleep. Nothing has fixed it. Only thing I can think of doing next is a restore/wipe via Odin.

If it occurred after an update, and cache cleaning did not help, the next step is a factory reset or Odin flash due to bad installation.
