Huge battery drain: Awake screen off - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Brand new phone here, not rooted and fully stock.
During last three days I noticed a huge battery drain overnight, so I installed Better Battery Stats. Being not rooted I don't see many info but one thing is clear: after 6h being idle, I have lost 17% and BBS shows one single line as per attached screenshot.
Any idea what's going on?
Thanks

try turning off wifi and anything that syncs constantly. go into settings, battery and see what it shows. no need for an extra app.

????
I don't want to turn off wifi at night.
With my edge+ all was remaining on and I would use only 4% overnight

I have the same problem. Go to sleep at night and wake up 7 hours later with 40% drain during the night. I don't use wifi.

I've had this phone for a week, and the first 3 days all was ok, but during the last 3 nights I am experiencing this huge drain overnight.
Problem is I am not rooted (and am not willing to root right now, till Android N comes) so I cannot really use wakelock detectors to see what's going on.
Phone is set up exactly like my Samsung S6 Edge+ and this one drain max 5% overnight.

Again go into settings and battery and see what is being used

Ok tonight I'll check

Here it is.
Unplugged and left 6h idle overnight with wifi on.
Lost 12℅
I cannot understand what's going on

Tonight lost 20%

Please note this happens only at night while phone is idle.
During day battery seems OK and wifi or idle do not show up in battery usage.
Also from the screenshot I see only 1% and a very low mA usage, so I don't understand why I lose so much battery when nothing is going on.

Is this really a problem? Your phone is losing between 2% and 3.3% per hour. That doesn't seem that bad. Mine is around 6% during the day (I have it plugged in during the night).

2% per hour in doze at night is a huge problem

Yeah, that kind of drain is an issue. I lose like 1% every 6 or 7 hours overnight with phone in doze with 2 maint. cycles

Horrible Battery?

I had my phone charged last night and it died before i woke up in the morning. Now i just finished my charge almost 1 hour and 20 minutes ago, and its already 90 percent. And i have nothing but gtalk running, and a fresh install. Is this possible its a battery problem?
Did you check your battery use in the settings menu under phone status? It breaks down what used all your charge. If you already hooked it up and charged it full, it might be too late to tell since it wipes the last charge's results off.
Keep an eye on that and see if there is something in that list killing your battery more than normal. If everything in there looks ok, it's possible your battery is bad.

Maybe you have the problem where an SMS is received and the screen stay on? Some people were reporting that problem in another thread. That would definitely kill your battery if you received a message sometime during the night.
I'm at:

Cell Standby 15% 3hr
Beautiful Widgets 13%
Phone Idle 13% 2hr20min
Bah that sucks, is there a fix for that sms thing? I havent seem it once yet. So basically 10 percent in 2 hours of no use is normal? I thought this phone could be on idle for days. eh.

Sorry, I missed the part where you stated the battery is at 89%...
My phone, on the first charge, lasted 28 hours with moderate to heavy usage. It should last a lot longer if it's just in standby.
Do you think i should go tomorrow to get my battery replaced?

How long have you had your phone? I'd give it a few days of fully charging/discharging to break in the battery and go from there. But the phone should definitely last you at least all day with moderate use.
I have had it since the night of the 18th. Well i mean i can try that, but it feels like its not the case. I dont know... bah

Of course it doesn't talk about the 30minutes of Wifi, the 30 or so minutes of watching some videos. Nor does it address surfing the net for around 60minutes and various emails through out the day.
Uptime 17:26:38
Battery 32%
Last night around this same time I had around 20%.
So it does seem to be improving a bit. Of course I wont know until tomorrow's usage.
I unplugged it around 6am and now its 11:37pm. So its lasting as long as I have so far. When I hit the sack I'll plug it in and go for it again tomorrow. As long as it has power when I go to bed then we will get a long just fine.

Remove widgets, lower your brightness, turn off GPS, turn off WiFi, set your notifications to a later time, and close unused running programs and see if that helps.
Personally if I'm below 75% and I have access to a charger, I just keep it plugged in to charge.
I had a fresh reinstall last night, and i lost 32 percent battery from 11pm to 10am without using the phone but for maybe 5 text messages.
I dont think this is normal...

+1.... Welcome to the inconsistencies of Android.
- Widgets off
- GPS in the task bar on. It only fires it up when it needs it anyways
- Screen Brightness I don't know I think its set to around 17-25% or so
- I turn off all that haptic feedback nonsense
- 3G off
- Wifi off
- Regular background
- I'm not running exchange or anything fancy that constantly looks for email, good old Gmail.
At least thats what I have my phone set up for. "What do you mean you don't have 3G on. Edge is so slow" Yeah its so useful when your phone is laying there doing nothing.
Same i have all that crap turned off. But i get bad battery times. Im thinking of returning and getting my battery replaced today. It wont hurt
Install Battery Graph and see how fast your battery drains at certain time intervals. You can probably tell if it's an app or not causing the problem if you see a big drop in a short time interval.
I was having the same issues for the first three day however I spent A LOT of time playing and tweaking as this is my first Andriod... I would unplug it at 6am and by 8am (with little to no use) I was down to about 65% but I was still thinking about replacing it.
I did the GPS Update and it seems to have helped a TON... Dunno what the coloration is (maybe the bad GPS signal was constantly looking and draining the battery) but it seems to really help.
Hope this helps some.
What is the GPS Update? You mean the fix in the Development section?

Overnight battery drain?

Wondering what everyone's overnight battery drain is looking like. picked up mine on launch day and the first nights battery drain was only 9% but last nights battery drain was 27% i don't know if it was something i had running in the background or what. Wifi was also on both nights.
I've seen this type of issue but have not been able to pinpoint the true source of that big drain when its in sleep mode

Applications. I'm sure of it.
I'm having the same exact issue.
Last night I went to bed with 11% and I woke up with 9% (7 hours of sleep).
The secret to almost 0 battery drain on your phone at night is to use juice defender + airplane mode. I set my juice defender's "night mode" for 1am - 6am, but you can mix that up based on your sleep schedule. Juice defender will disable data during that time.
I turn on airplane mode at night because nobody is going to be calling me when I'm sleeping. The only person that would is my fiance, and she sleeps next to me.
Juice defender almost helps battery life throughout the day. Also, make sure battery saving mode is checked under "display and sound settings." I've been experiencing phenomenal battery life so far. My 2nd charge went for 21 hours with 4 hours of screen on time.
I hope this helps

yea i just started using juice defender got the paid version this morning so we will see how it goes tonight. i also have advanced task killer now which will kill no essential apps/functions when i turn the screen off. Hopefully battery life increases over my old palm pre lol. It's also doesn't help that at work i only get 0-2 bars inside so that kinda sucks my battery life down alot.

Hmm.. Must be what is happening to me. I always have 2 bars where I live.
i've got to wonder if inaccurate battery level reporting isn't part of the issue, and i don't just mean the battery icon in the top notification bar
some other posters have remarked how much life they had even after the low battery warning notification popped up. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770207
after the first few weeks of use, once my battery had settle down, i was seeing 1-2% drain at night after taking mine off the charger at 11:00PM
i even took to putting it in airplane mode & turning off GPS - and it didn't affect the 1-2% drain
but every odd day it'll show 8 to 11% drain after a full charge and putting it to sleep at 11:00PM
the same with the radio signal strength indication given in settings - again, not the signal strength bars in the notification. When my signal strength is showing 0 & 0 asus, i can still make calls with no drop outs etc
look I understand and agree that juice defender and airplane mode help but lets be honest here
not all of us want to disable the phone to save battery. standby should not take this much battery even without the damn defender and schmender
something is going on thats draining battery
my evo did not do this at all even without defender or airplane mode

This is true. Once the battery hits low levels, it must kick into super battery saver mode because it hangs in there like a champ. I was trying to murder the last of my battery so I could completely drain it all the way. At 6% I just loaded up a movie because that's a good battery drainer. It took an hour to hit 0%, and even then it didn't shut off.

Huh. I found that my EVO drained more battery life when idle than my Epic. Cell standby will kill your phone when idle if you don't have great signal. This is the reason behind airplane mode. Task killers will also drain your battery. Anything that runs in the background, really.
I'm running systempanel to monitor eerything and I noticed that the phones cpu is at 30% when sleeping with occasional spikes every few hours to 100%.
I also run tasker, and then both run in background...

I just worked this morning from 10pm to 7:30am. Night shift at Wal-Mart. Went to work with 96% and ran Pandora all night, facebook, texting, net on breaks. Got home at 12%. About 10 hours of good use. I can live with that. But that's an example there.

Horrible battery life

My Huawei has a horrible battery life. I'm using stock rom (rooted of course) and the battery drains really fast, like 5-10% an hour even in sleep mode. I have used a battery calibration app recommended by someone here in xda, but I don't think it made any difference. My last Android phone used around 1% an hour, even with data and sync on, but with pretty much the same settings, I can hardly make it through the day with my Huawei.
So, what to do? I don't need the battery to last for days, but having to recharge twice a day at worst is just too much.
My battery drops around 7-10% overnight.
Probably a defective cell?
mine after i installed custom rom (b160) and a battery calibartion in flight mode during my sleep after 7 hours that passed and woke up it was 1% dropped and now 7 almost hours afterwards in normal mode it has dropped 7% with very light use of course...
i want to say just that with gsm active it drained 5% more than in flight mode...
so something must be going wrong , like you don't have a good signal and it uses much power to keep your connection alive and have better signal....
i must say that i have a profile with setcpu when the screen is off with min 122 and max 460...
and just for the record i think that with custom rom also mine was dropping more...
i don't know why although...

Noticed this myself. i use spotify alot on the phone, walking, bicycling, at the gym. and it drains a whole lot of power even in offline mode. but if i set it in flight mode the phone last for hours and hours without even dropping 5-10% of power. but when gsm or data traffic is on the battery life just drains out so quickly! so it is definitly something serously wrong in this rom. Im hoping gingerbread is coming soon to this phone, so maybe all these small issues has been fixed.
I've found highly variable battery life. Sometimes it's awful, almost 50% overnight when it's sleeping on my nightstand, other times it's much better and only drops 7-10% under those conditions.
One thing is Google Maps, even when not in use it seems to suck battery like crazy if it's loaded (and it has a habit of getting loaded even when you don't run it or any apps that use it). There's a long thread on this in the Google support forums, but no sign of a fix from Google yet.
I've found doing a 'force stop' on Maps if it's running often helps, another thing is to reboot the phone after you charge it, that seems to fix it for several days sometimes, but then it starts sucking juice again for no apparent reason, so I tend to reboot it after each recharge. There can also be other apps that due to bugs can suck battery, for a while there app killer did this but the author put a fix out pretty quick and it shouldn't be an issue now.
Just noticed that there's an Android update from Huawei now available for download, maybe that'll fix some of the irritations and help with battery life; I'm off to install it!
where can you find that update? through phone's settings->check for update (in my case it says i got the latest version) or online?
My phone has been on for nearly 48 hours.. charging it right now. I played, connected to wifi, browsed the net, facebook, gmail etc.. and I really played hard on it for a few hours.
30mins ago it switched off, dead battery.. I'm quite pleased with the battery life

Exactly the same problem here. I formatted now both the internal and external SD card, let's see if that helps.
edit: No it doesn't. The problem seems to be that my phone doesn't sleep properly. I charged it to full, then turned the screen off for one hour. App called Spart Parts shows that since last unplugged, time spent without sleeping is 36m.
it took mine 2 weeks to get to the full battery life. now i get 36-48 hours from it.

The problem is back... For some unknown reason the phone doesn't go to sleep and starts to use more battery.
Battery History:
Other usage, since last unplugged:
Running (100%)
Screen on (3,2%)
Partial wake usage, since last unplugged:
Android System: Total time: 13s
Dialer: Total time: 0s
Maps: Total time: 0s
It seems that reboot helps with this every time. After reboot, running-% is 32.9 when screen on is 6.5%. It would still be interesting and helpful to know what causes this.

I get most of the time also. But after charging, at one point (after some time) for some reason the time spent without sleeping goes to 99%. The problem is, that the partial wake usage doesn't show that something is wrong. Usually restart helps, but sometimes it can be already late, because 100% running has already taken quite much of the battery.
Also, when the time spent without sleeping is 99% or 100%, the CPU is still NOT in heavy use. So something just prevents the phone to go to sleep mode, and it seems that it is not the CPU that causes it.

I got it through the phone, it was the 2.2.1 B136SP02 update. Not online at Huawei website. It doesn't seem to have improved battery life alas (or the frequent WiFi dropouts I've had since new, particularly while downloading app updates). Main feature of the update is WiFi tethering/hotspot support, at last...
What seems to have worked for me after a couple of weeks++ of REALLY crappy battery life is a battery stats wipe.
FullCharge while the phone was off. First boot in recovery, battery wipe and then i just let it run close to dry before the first charge (almost 48 hours of medium use). Note here that i am now using the charger that came with the phone because i noticed that my generic usb one had an output of 0.7A instead of the full 1A of the factory charger.
Another point arose however. Does anyone else have stability issues when battery drops below 25%? I am talking about some serious crash/reboot/lag/noradio issues.

Does battery drain faster below a certain %?

This is odd. On idle, it took nearly 3 hours to go from 62% to 61% which I'm very happy with. After that it started going down a bit quicker. Waking up after 7 and a half hours, the battery had gone from 49% to 42%, so about 1% per hour. While that's not so bad, why would it start to go down fast? Since it took nearly 3 hours to move 1%, I'd have thought it should be at about 46 or 47% after waking up. Is there a % threshold where the battery drains quicker?
Current uptime, mostly from idle, and power saving mode from 50%.

For me battery drops can sometimes happen when I don't charge battery to 100% - so it's good idea to always charge to full.
First of all you should check if your battery is going into deep sleep mode. You can do that by installing Bettery Battery Stats, and leaving your phone idle with the screen off for some time. You should read the forum post to understand how it works. If after leaving your phone on "stand-by" you realize that it's not going into Deep Sleep mode, then you should find out what is keeping your phone awake.
I used to have the same situation as you, and it turned out that I had set the WiFi Sleep Policy in Viber to override the Roms setting, and consequently leaving my WiFi always on (which prevents your phone from sleeping). After fixing the issue in Viber my phone now turns WiFi off after 15 minutes of leaving my phone idle.
Now unless your battery is actually dying on you, I'm sure you can get a better battery life. I am using Tasker to program my phone to turn WiFi off when I turn off my screen, and then turn it on for 1 minute every 15 minutes during the day, and at nights it does the same thing but with an interval of 1 hour and half. There are apps in the Play Store that do this too, I've tried these both, and they work as they should, and they can even control your Data connection
Green power
Deep Sleep Battery Saver
All in all I've been losing an average of 1.7% during the day, and 0.7% and 1.2% per night. My battery currently lasts about 2 days on one charge. This is all assuming it is actually your WiFi that's preventing your phone from sleeping, I just figured I'd share my experience in case it is in fact that; the important thing being that you could probably get the same results as I have (or even better, considering your battery isn't busted) if your phone is actually going into Deep Sleep.
