I dunno, I have a ZTE Max Duo, and despite it being out for half a year, I have yet to see any discussion on it whatsoever, let alone research into rooting it, so I'd say it's unrootable.

Not Really...

Don't know why though. THis is the best phone I have by far. My favorite of the century. I blame ZTE advertising people who did not capitalize on the VR capability of this phone.
I would say it is unpopular coz it's unrootable. I don't want to mess with new phones anymore anyway. They lock it tight. I really don't fancy the headache.

Should you just need to mess with a "Rooted" phone, the LG-K7 for $49.88 works..

I wonder if this would work
Found this article, just a little to scared to try it as i do not have the money to just toss if i brick my phone.
There is a link for autoroot tools v4.7.1 updated on Oct 6th.

No it's copy paste click bait. I don't see a link in your post but I'm sure I know what one you're talking about because someone posted the same thing as you on the other forum. It's just generic instructions and talks about what to do if you're on 4.0, 4.1, etc. C'mon man.

Developer Option Allowing the bootloader to be unlocked
I just picked up the zmax pro tonight. I was going through making changes to the settings as I always do with a new phone and enabled the "Developer Options". As I was scrolling down I came across an option labeled " OEM Unlocking: Allow the bootloader to be unlocked". Well of course I enabled it.
Now from the knowledge I have about rooting, you have to have the bootloader unlocked to root. So by enabling the OEM Unlock are you just allowing the bootloader to be unlocked or are you unlocking the bootloader?
I look forward to hearing back.

You are just allowing the bootloader to be unlocked . As it said. To unlock the bootloader, you need the help of the genius hackers here. Unfortunately, like one of the posters here said our phone is unpopular which I say again, I don't know why, this is a good phone for me.
But then again, I really don't see the point of rooting any phone anymore, new phones already have all the things you want to put on your phones and why you root them right?
If I ever root my phone though, I definitely will install xposed. I like that they have repositories remind me of kodi, which is the best hack of em all. Is exposed made by kodi people?

Root

I have a Droid Maxx, and Razr Maxx HD and perhaps some beer cash for the answer to root...
I was thinking flashing twrp, then let it root, or am i way off or require an unlocked bootloader? I tried sunshine, but no go as it requires root.
So if i understand, you can get root without an unlocked bootloader, or is an unlocked bootloader a prerequisite of root? I am thinking not, but i am a Windows/SharePoint guy and pretty dumb to linux...

You need an unlocked bootloader to flash TWRP (which flashes SuperSU). There is no known root method available yet because the phone has only been out for about 8 hours.
The Sunshine team has apparently said they will not be supporting Motorola devices for 4.4.4 in their 3.0 release, only HTC, so unlikely it will work there.

Yeah, I didn't think I'd need root but the dpi on this thing is just way too high. For being such a great display it's hindered by the scaling. Easily fixed with root though!!
Found this on some Chinese site. If I had a backup phone I'd try it. But I don't. So can't risk bricking. Anyone else want to take a leap of faith? Ummm... Won't let me post the link because I'm still a noob apparently... So gonna try breaking it up. Just remove the line returns and spaces.

Didn't work for me. Too be safe I used a virtual machine with a snap shot taken before installing so I can revert back without the risk of spyware. Also tried Kingo but no luck with either.
---------- Post added at 06:39 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:20 AM ----------
Also vroot during the root attempt installs 2 apps on your phone and who knows what it installs on Windows without running a regmon, if you do decide to try it make sure you uninstall the 2 chinese apps when your done trying. Also like I mentioned above I would highly not to install vroot or Kingo on your daily driver windows machine. Leave the testing to people who have virtual machines they can install these apps on.
I have used vroot and kingo in the past to successfully root so I know they do/can work, they just haven't been updated yet to work on the Droid Turbo. Hopefully they will.

QuadRooter Vulnerability?

Looks like there's a new vulnerability that is able to achieve root through a couple security holes.
Ran the Quadroot scanner app on my galaxy s7 edge PD8 and it does show its vulnerable to this.
From what I've read, this malware can achieve root just by installing it like any other Apk app.
Would it be possible for Devs to purposely download the malicious malware and make a working towelroot like root method for our devices?

These are no more dangerous than any other kernel exec vulns, and alone wont offer you anything. These will not unlock the bootloader, allow you to flash supersu, or let you change system.

So if you can't change the system, then why should anyone be worried about this? Sounds like if we can't use these to access the system, neither can malicious attackers unless I'm missing something.

I have been talking to an agent from T-Mobile and he confirmed that they are doing nothing regaurding a bootloader unlock like some have been hoping for. So now I'm kinda pissed at them and mostly Samsung. It seems devs need to find another way to unlock the bootloader. :/

Root for Verizon?

I just got this phone (coming from an unlocked rooted VZW S5) and I'm pretty bummed out not seeing any root guides for this specific version (I know Verizon rooting is spotty). Can someone point me in the right direction?

From what I've read that toggle is only a 2ndary safety toggle. You still have to submit to Motorola to get an unlock code and Verizon has forbidden it.

Interesting find Possible Eng bootloader firmware?

So I have not been able to obtain this firmware but figured I'd share to see what you ladies/gents could figure out.

idk, seems pretty fishy to me, every I link I see is to pay to download sites for this file. You would think that there would be somewhere online where its free. Probably a bogus download.

I found the free one for the 955 and 950 i was able to find the unlock bootloader option through it not sure if it will work. Was more interested in the boot.img
Not saying it isn't a scam, but romup is actually a fairly reputable site. People posting leaked firmware all the time straight from the factory. A few other Asian sites like this one have some juicy stuff, not just for Exynos/other unlocked loader models. So don't discourage it, translate it and see what they have to say and maybe even test it. I personally don't want to take the risk with my phone but someone kinda has to. Anyways, done with my little rant.
Would this Engboot be good for snapdragon variants? I remember the S7 Edge had a locked bootloader, but you could still atleast root it

Im working on this right now. Give me a little bit had a kid last year so im trying my best to get this done right now while i have time.
Wait so do you have a copy of that firmware? I can't obtain that one bc I have no way of paying in yuan.
Also is there a way to flash a firmware where root is natively in the firmware? I always thought we had to unlock the bootloader and root and then flash recovery. Unless it was the recovery that always tripped knox.
Hi Br3w3r,
I just wanted to say thanks and ask you a little about how you coerce these engineering firmwares to allow root mode. Do you reverse engineer it? Just curious.
Found a newer version of ODIN and enabled the grayed out buttons. Maybe it could help?
ODIN 3.12.7 with UMS and USERDATA already enabled: https://mega.nz/#F!8WxRwDwa!seZLQVSoWTrz2CJkbdxTkQ
Interesting... so if I am reading this right. Someone is trying to work on snapdragon now?
I have purchased a copy of the firmware posted by the OP, although it was bought off of a different website. This is a factory binary, that has SElinux as permissive, OEM unlock says it unlocks bootloader, etc

Good god share this please

Samsung Galaxy A20 SM-A205U (MetroPCS)

So I got this little puppy free today.
What I've noticed so far, outside of having no service...
There is no OEM Unlock in developer options. All tricks to get it to work (moving the date up 8 days) doesn't work because the device won't give the options for software updating to be done manually.
Anybody have any luck getting the 205U OEM Unlocked? Tagging @physwizz on this.
The phone is a middle of the road, but if basic oem unlock can't be done, swapping out for a moto g6.

Not yet. I'm on the same boat. Like the phone but our model a205u doesn't have an unlocked bootloader option. I had a chat with a Samsung rep who informed me no help on bootloader oem unlocking. We have to find an unofficial way.
Anyome tried chimera tool? I checked the website and has the a205u listed under supported devices but didn't indicate bootloader unlock or root. I saw rmm unlock and Knox disabler. Also sw change. Hope someone can help on rooting or device without a cost. I'll pay up to 5 bucks but nothing more just for root when root has been free on all my devices since 2012.

So Sammy isn't even going to direct us as to how to get this puppy unlocked when Metro has never given a **** anyway about bootloader locking? Hmm...
Haven't tried Chimera Tool. Dont have the box or a version that is current enough to use with the model.

Yeah, your best bet right now is to use the Android Debug Bridge to uninstall system packages without root.
You can achieve a relatively stock android experience and put on whatever launcher you want, which isnt too terrible at the moment.
We're still working on getting a TWRP going anyhow

Oh cool. Btw, what do you mean by "We're still working on getting TWRP going" you mean the Galaxy A20s that can be rooted (excluding the A205U)? Cause you can only get TWRP with an unlocked bootloader right?

That's right. No Way to root , unlock bootloader period. That's y the a205u is so cheap. In the USA no bootloader support. Go Motorola or pixel if you want bootloader unlock support. I sold my a205u for $125.00. Bought the Moto g7 power for $100.00 ..Rooted .. Leave Samsung alone in the USA.

That ain't a deal when Metro is giving them away FREE with Amazon Prime. And yes, you're **** out of luck. But so is every other American carrier branded phone, and the American factory unlock version.

News flash on that model. There is no using ADB as most commands are locked per the Knox system. And if you do manage to delete any packages, that Knox crap makes it damn hard to flash back. Odin isn't exactly a great tool for that model.
Let's set aside the stock android experience - the fact that Sammy INTENTIONALLY LOCKED all their AMERICAN VARIANTS is TERRIBLE. There is no making that better.
That is why a lot of us that got this phone TOOK IT BACK and got one that did have BOOTLOADER UNLOCK.

Hang it up. There will never be a TWRP for this variant or any other carrier variant. This is literally the VZW of Samsung models. There will be zero development for it. Only the international models will see support as a reality.

Return it to Samsung. Tell them it was unsuitable and ask for a A205G
Samsung told me this.

Hey physwizz...tried that. Samsung said in the US they do not substitute for international models. They only offered me a A205U model in its place.

That is a script. Go into a Samsung store in the US their technicians will NOT unlock the bootloader. If that method was even an option an exploit would have been leaked long ago.

Well I spoke to the guy at the store.. when I have time I will see if it can be done. I told them the truth... that I'm a Developer and need the Bootloader unlocked to use my test keys to install on the device.

Please do, but I'm not holding my breath that Samsung will honor anything. If anything they are going to tell you to get a developer model - their quest to be Apple is going to be their end.

Followed your advice, got me a MetroPCS G7 power from LetGo ( Rooting and TWRP was a bit of a hassle but i was able to do it just fine).
